What a precious Georgian era romance! I absolutely loved the little town of Spa. It was a character in its own right with its muddy roads and therapeutic springs—the absolute perfect backdrop for an adorable second chance romance.

I loved how everything was set up perfectly in the prologue. The love and yearning between Amy and James was evident from the start. When they reconnected six years later in Spa, Belgium, I could absolutely feel the tension between them. New circumstances standing in their way made for the most delicious angst! The road back to each other wasn’t easy for James and Amy. I loved the lessons they both learned along the way and the romance made me ache in the best way.

Amy’s father and sister were such fun side characters. Their individual personalities really stood out. The way they backed Amy in the end warmed my heart. It was so satisfying to see her taken care of after she took care of them for so long. This story has so many more fun elements and surprises, but you’ll have to read to discover them for yourself. This is the first book I’ve tried by Jennie Goutet, but it won’t be my last.

A Love Once Lost by Jennie Goutet
#ALoveOnceLost

You’re going to love this one if you enjoy getting completely wrapped up in a story that feels both emotional and comforting at the same time.

Set during the Georgian era, the Grand Tour backdrop is so vivid and well researched. It really feels like you are traveling right alongside Amy and her family. If you love learning little historical details without it feeling heavy, this does it beautifully.

Amy and James are the heart of this story, and their second chance romance just hits. If you enjoy longing, unresolved feelings, and those maybe this is not over after all moments, this will absolutely pull you in. Their connection feels real, a little messy, and very heartfelt.

You will also love the writing style. It is smooth and engaging and gives the story space to breathe. Nothing feels rushed, which makes the emotional moments land even more.

And the side characters are so charming. If you love a series where you cannot wait to follow each sibling’s story, you will already be excited for what comes next.

If you love clean historical romance, second chances, and stories full of heart, this is definitely one to add to your list.

A LOVE ONCE LOST
(The Bridwell’s Grand Tour Series, Book 1)
by: Jennie Goutet

••I give 4.5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

~Six years ago, she refused his proposal. Now the life-
and loveshe turned away is in her reach once again...

-Friends, with more mature main characters, wonderful writing, and many unique historical details included, A LOVE ONCE LOST, is a dear historical clean romance story. This reading adventure of a story took me along for quite a slow-burn romance back in time, to the town of Spa in Belgium. It is here, possibilities for second chances build slow but surely for a yearned happily ever after. While there are windy twists and turns, heartbreaks, and yearning along the way, I was hopeful that that the journey would lead to a dear destination. I loved character’s patience, sparkling dynamics, and their commitment to standing by their words and choosing to do what was right despite their own happiness. Yet, it was their determination, vulnerability, and pursuit of what was good had my heart. While the pace felt slower, I am glad the outcome was well-earned and reached in such a way that made me grateful for the journey, that did come to a happy conclusion. This dear story is one to not miss.🙌🏻📚‼️

•Content: No language, death of family members (off page; mentioned on page), some gambling (not glorified), some infidelity hinted at (by side characters), some unwanted advances, kisses only.

I always have such a hard time reviewing Jennie Goutet's books. They just lift me up and leave my head all in a muddle. But a peaceful muddle. I always feel peaceful when reading her books-they're like a deep, cleansing breath.

As soon as I opened this book, I felt that peace.

I will admit that for a fleeting few seconds, I was worried about the triangle situation. But I trust Jennie. And I realized that it isn't so much a love triangle as a commitment triangle. So of course that made it all better.

I loved seeing Spa through James and Amy's eyes. I felt like I was right there, drinking what I can only assume was sulphur water at one of the fountains (we had sulphur water when I was a kid, and I can still smell it. Yuck!). And I am ALWAYS a sucker for a second chance romance.

This was a delightful read, and I am so looking forward to the next book in the series!

I received a digital edition of this book courtesy of LibraryThing Early Reviewers and the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Exactly what it says on the tin: after a youthful understanding, James Fowler and Amy Bridwell are separated for six years, and unexpectedly reunite in Spa, Belgium. James left England under a cloud when Amy refused to marry him (despite their fathers' wishes), and eventually decided to go to medical school and set himself up as a physician near the healing waters of Spa. He has sunk his entire small trust into building a bathing facility, which would be the first of its kind. Mr Bridwell decides to make Spa the first stop of his second Grand Tour, as he suffers from rheumatism. His reasons for undertaking a second Tour himself are as incomprehensible as the rest of his eccentric ways, but considering his daughters are now of age, he's happy to ferry them around as if they were sons.

Neither James or Amy ever expected to run into each other again, but once they get over their surprise, they spend the rest of the book fighting their feelings for each other. James is engaged to another woman, and Mr Bridwell is in a hurry to move on to the more intellectually stimulating parts of the Tour.

This was fine. The Georgian-era setting is carefully evoked, and the characters follow the strictures of their society. I enjoyed the prose, and thought the secondary characters were fun. I especially enjoyed the understated courtship of Morry and Rebecca. Unfortunately, I ended up strongly disliking both lead characters.

Amy rubbed me the wrong way right from the start - the scant prologue that sets up the rest of the plot. I found her to be very passive and cold, and thought she was just as bitchy towards James as his erstwhile fiancee. She's somehow mad at him for not sticking around after she rejected his hand and allowed her father to betrothe her to another man, and waiting for her to work up the courage to break it off? MAJOR side-eye from me. She's also one of those martyr types, who throws herself into organizing her family because it was her mother's dying wish that she watch over her younger sisters. She resents it, but asserts such control over her batty father and her sisters that she never gives them a chance to even try to plan their own lives. The sisters call her out on this, albeit somewhat gently.

James started off fine, but as the story progressed, he became indecisve and hopeless. He's sunk all his money into building his bathing facility, and managed to get himself engaged to the most eligible girl in town on the promise of a legacy from a distant relative, and the idea of taking over her father's medical practice. But, the father never consults with James about his patients, and when the legacy is threatened, James spends a lot of time worrying over his financial situation, how he could possibly extricate himself from the now-unwanted betrothal contract, or even pursue Amy again when he has nothing to his name.. He was the epitome of the Simpsons meme "We're tried nothing, doc, but we're all out of ideas!"

I never really felt the emotional bond between James and Amy. Why were the attracted to each other? Why do they pine after each other? Why do they refuse to actually talk to each other? Your guess is as good as mine. The short prologue is the only history we're privy to, and it basically sounds like one summer of tender feelings and a single kiss are what they are clinging to. The OTT other woman (James's fiancee) borders on cliche, with all of the ways that she's the opposite of Amy.

The other issue , for me, is the ultra-slow pace of the plot. It's almost painful to read. I thought we were finally reaching the end, but there was another 25% tacked on, for basically no good reason other than a cringe-worthy Grand Romantic Gesture. I also did not care for the way every single plot point was wrapped up in a very tidy bow. If we're supposed to empathize with these characters because they are messy and realistic, the coda regarding James's legacy was just completely unnecessary.

For all this, however, I would read another book by this author. I think she can write well; these characters were just not for me. I will keep an eye out for Marianne's book (likely the last in the series) because I like the idea of an artistic heroine.

“No one, man or woman, is born to live as a servant to others. Each of us is meant to pursue our own destiny.”

Set in 1770, this sweet Georgian-era story sets the stage for The Bridwells' Grand Tour series, finding itself in Spa, Belgium. Of course, I was quickly all in for the one that got away and a second chance at a possible reconciliation trope, but this setting was also purely delightful.

James and Amy didn’t part ways on the best of terms after a forbidden and secret arrangement, and six years later, they encounter one another again…and now he’s promised to another. Goutet’s magical way with words delivers a charming and heartfelt tale, full of spirited characters and feelings of hope and longing. A book that can immediately seize my attention is one worth investing every spare moment with, and this is just that type of story.

I adored the natural progression of this slow-burn story, allowing for maturing and growth, but the simmering attraction that is fanned once more really caught my heart. I was quickly swept away and savored every moment spent within these pages.

Goutet has a winner with this first book in a new series. Not only is it full of fantastic characters, cherished swoon, and wondrous words, but the premise and setting are superb.

Thank you to Haven Publishing for the digital ARC and finished copy of A Love Once Lost by Jennie Goutet. All opinions are my own.

This book is mainly set in Spa during 1770. I found this to be such a fascinating setting since I haven’t read much set during this time period. It was also interesting seeing how different people acted in this town compared to other places.

While I thought the setting and historical details were well done, I felt the romance was really lacking. It felt like more time was spent on James and Isabel than on the romance between Amy and James.

Although Amy and James were young in the prologue, it really did seem stupid how they parted ways so quickly and then never got back in touch until so much time had passed.

Both Amy and James just allowed their circumstances to happen without putting up much of a fight. I also wasn’t sold on their romance since they had very few moments together.

Overall, the story was fine and the audiobook was well done, but I just needed more romance in the story.

A Love Once Lost is a beautiful story about reconnecting with a past love and finding out that the spark is still there. This wonderful story set against the backdrop of the eighteenth century will introduce two past loves who realize that they still care for each other. I have to say i was very impressed with how this book turned out!

We are introduced to Amy who is on a Grand Tour trip with her family. On this trip she has a run in with a past James whom she has not seen in six years. In those six years he has managed to become a physician and found a new sweetheart. However, with seeing Amy again he wonders if the life he has now is the one that he truly wants.

The Brief: Amy turned down James. When her family takes a Grand Tour she encounters him in Spa And his fiancé.

The Debrief: This author wrote a beautiful second chance romance with a bit of Persuasion vibes- and since it’s a favorite trope of mine, I was easily enchanted. Except with all the boos I sent to Miss Prexley. Amy mother henned her sisters and her windowed father was just a bit wacky, but Amy’s kindness and resilience shined through the pages. James kept all his feelings bottled up inside and I really wanted him to find happiness. Spoiler alert: love is worth the risk.

The Rhyme: James knows how to help those who are sick, but hearts need a different medicine. When he gets a second chance at love will he take it or let it slip through his hands again?

Highly recommend this slow burn Georgian era story with the most beautiful cover.

This one definitely has a slower start. I switched to the audiobook and that helped some. I didn’t like that Amy played the martyr for her family. I hate that trope, and it killed the book for me. I feel like James and Amy definitely needed to grow some backbones. This book would have been better as a novella and I would have enjoyed it more.

I do love Jenny’s writing style, it flows so smoothly. I just wasn’t a fan of this particular story.

I received A Love Once Lost by Jennie Goutet as a free ARC from NetGalley. It's from an author I've never read or heard of before, but because her books are classified as clean fiction, I decided to give her a try and did not regret it! According to her website, this is book one in The Bridewells' Grand Tour series, and it will be released on June 23, 2026.

They chose separate paths, never imagining fate would offer them a second chance.

Amy Bridwell reluctantly accompanies her family on a Grand Tour of the Continent—the very trip her former sweetheart proposed they take as newlyweds. Receiving no suitable marriage offer in the six years since and with her heart still guarded by regret, Amy has no choice but to go along with her widower father and younger sisters to ensure their travels proceed smoothly.

James Fletcher has built a successful practice as a physician in the fashionable resort town of Spa. Though he came with a wounded heart, seeking distance from Amy’s rejection, he’s managed to build a respectable life and is now engaged to a woman who will ensure his professional future. If only he could be certain that his betrothed’s heart is truly his.

When the Bridwells arrive at their first destination, Amy is stunned to encounter James again. He is promised to another, and as old feelings resurface, Amy must confront the choice she made six years ago, facing the possibility that her heart has never truly moved on.

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (and a half?)

I definitely enjoyed this book! The beginning was a bit slow, and I had trouble keeping interest, but by the middle to the end, it was very interesting! Overall, I would definitely give it three to three and a half stars.

Characters

Okay, this being a second-chance romance, we had to learn why it didn't work out the first time, right? The author introduced us to the couple in a prologue set five years before the rest of the story. I can't say exactly why, but for some reason, the characters just didn't "click" for me in this prologue. I felt like both Amy and James were a bit obnoxious and unreasonable in the beginning. As the story progressed, I did find myself enjoying their characters more.

Amy's father got on my nerves. I'm not sure why, but he just did. He seems to be oblivious to his daughters' needs and desires. The whole tour was his idea, yet Amy, his eldest, gets stuck with all the planning and preparing for the big trip. Amy, of course, takes this all in stride.

Amy's sisters were both very sweet. I loved the little "sister moments" between the three during the book. I also enjoyed the parts about James' friend Morry. His happy ending was sweet...

There were a lot of other characters, and it was hard to keep them straight at times. Some were very sweet, like the Princess and Mr. Vroomen, but others were wolves in sheep's clothing.

Plot

As I said, the plot was a bit slow in the beginning. Between that and the fact that I wasn't a big fan of Amy and James in the beginning, I had trouble starting this book. By the time I got a third of the way through, it definitely picked up. The POV switched between Amy and James at appropriate times, which gave a nice depth to the story. This wasn't necessarily a story I'd say I had trouble putting down, but overall, it was definitely interesting!

Sexual Content/Violence Notes

Not really much to say here. Of course, our main couple remembers past kisses, and they kiss occasionally, but nothing too detailed, which I appreciated. One character has some questionable things going on about meeting with someone in a "special place." While this is not elaborated upon, it came as quite a surprise to one of our main characters. Also, another character brings a lady to one of the springs nearby. While there, he starts intimidating her, but she is rescued before anything bad actually happens.

Conclusion

Overall, this was a good book! The reason I gave it three stars was that I just had trouble actually enjoying it at first. Some people would love this book and give it five stars, but for me, I just couldn't get into it for some reason. Also, this being a Christian author, I would have appreciated some more faith content besides the occasional mention of God. Still, give the book a try, you'll probably enjoy it!

A gentle rhythm tale that is mature and rich in culture but lacking in warmth.

It had a dramatic start that immediately hooked me, not to mention I hadn't yet read any books set in 1700s Spa. So I was excited for the culture and for something different than what I was accustomed to. Yes the main characters are British-of whom I am quite accustomed to reading about, but the setting had me quite intrigued.
And in this it did not disappoint. It was culturally rich and different. I enjoyed learning about Spa and the goings about of Europe's upper class in that time period. On this point the book was very well written.

Another place in which this book did well for me was in the gentleness of its rhythm. It was something I easily turned to when I needed a respite from the demands of life. It was so calm and soothing despite the chaotic things that some of the characters were going through.

One of the places where it limped quite a bit were in the places of dialogue and character interactions. There were so many vibrant and out of the box characters that just needed to have a little more shine added to them by allowing them to speak more. They seemed well thought out but sadly not executed to their full potential. Because of this the main characters had to carry most of the story and so my investment into their world was not so strongly maintained. I quickly found it easy to put the book down.
Also because there wasn't much dialogue the story lacked quite a bit in humor, wit and clever conversations. Adding again to it being easily put-downable.

I had also hoped the sisters in the story would have had a warmer on page bond. Warm exchanges and camaraderie between siblings always adds so much loveliness and comfort to a story that has a slice of life undercurrent - which this story was. But unfortunately the author did not apply more on-page affection between the sisters.

Thankfully the English is yummy, rich and not over simplified. Gives off that historical fiction feeling. I enjoyed that. Plus it is a clean read with few kisses. We love a clean read over here.

One of the bigger drawbacks for me was in how the love story was handled (both for major and supporting characters). The love interests don't spend much heartfelt time together. They didn't need to be swooning about each other in every interaction but I wish we had more of warm, healing, gentle interactions between them in order to cheer for their happily ever after. We hardly see the lovely things that happen between two people who love each other (aside from feelings and attraction). What about the other things that draw people to each other? We needed more friendship, understanding the other more than most, seeking out their greatest good sometimes at the cost of oneself etc. We could have enjoyed reading them share more of these other things and have us going "sigh, they were absolutely made for each other". There were whispers of it in this but it was just not enough. Romance authors really struggle to write these elements in their stories is what I have come to realise.

All in all it's an okay read if you don't mind much about the things I mentioned above. Its most winning trait is that it has a very relaxing undertone. But for me personally it's a not so strong 3 star read.

This story was quite the historical treat! Set in the sweet little town of Spa, Belgium in the 1770s. I learned so much about this historically important location! Known for its rich mineral waters and the attraction people had to this place at this time to find remedies to different health situations, this was quite the place! A perfect location for this story and blends beautifully with the main character's father and his need to soothe his rheumatism.

The location really drives the story because it's a central point of why the character's are there in the first place, and it provides a visual backdrop to the story that is unique in its own right. Especially because societal expectations are very different in this place, too. Women are allowed to walk around on their own and not lose their reputation, but there are still some unscrupulous sorts living in this area, so it's still important to be cautious.

What has drawn this community together though is their shared interest in the mineral waters and the health benefits it provides. Each person is either there as a physician who recommends the use of the waters or as a patient trying to heal themselves of something. This in turn creates a rather tight-knit community where the people are drawn together for shared reasons.

Amy Bridwell is the sweetest and most caring young woman. She fell deeply in love with her friend James, but his family did not approve of their relations. Then, a drastic misunderstanding takes them apart and they go their separate ways never expecting to see the other again. It's not until six years later that fate surprisingly brings them back together in the pretty town of Spa.

Amy is travelling with her father and sisters as they tour the continent. When they arrive in Spa, Amy is flustered to find James, her long lost love, is living there as a Physician! So many things are still hindering their ability to be together and it's a somber affair as she settles into her role as caretaker and spinster. She is a strong young woman that her father and sisters depend on dearly and she has kind of settled into the role of caretaker for her family, assuming she will never marry and settle down after what happened with James.

Additionally, James is also taken back by Amy's appearance in his new home and is determined not to lose her this time. But he's in a predicament of his own making and isn't at liberty to court her. Much of the book is him getting to know her again and realizing his feelings are still as strong as ever. Lots of surprises ensue and it's a hard fought battle for love to win in this one!

I adored the setting and the characters so much!! Amy's sisters were very interesting and I am hoping to see their stories come alive at some point. This book created a wonderful setting where you could really get lost in the lively town filled with a variety of characters and appreciate this second chance romance at its fullest!

I'm in somewhat of a conundrum with this second chance at love novel. I found myself greatly enjoying the author's skillful portrayal of 1700's Europe. She sets an enveloping scene of the place and the people, with interesting historical details about clothes styles and buildings woven into the fabric of her story. The characters are well described and I particularly loved Mr Bridwell with his eccentricities and his sometimes awkward consideration of his daughters. I also enjoyed meeting Amy's sisters, and look forward to getting to know them better in future books. Creative and vivacious Marianne reminds me of her namesake from Sense and Sensibility, and I look forward to finding out her future happy ending, and how she reaches it.

And that, in a way, leads to why this book is for me a little bit disappointing in terms of the romantic leads. Amy, rather than having the appeal of the reserved Eleanor in the above mentioned classic, for me came across rather frustratingly at the start of this book, and James not much better. Perhaps partly because at that point I'd not really had a chance to get to know either of them. Of course I understand why the story begins as it does though. Then we meet Isabel. Although grasping and entirely self-obsessed, I ended up feeling rather sorry for her as I read. I wasn't very impressed by James' reasons for wooing her, especially as they were so obviously unsuited as to be heading to not simply an unloving but nonetheless contented and workable union, but rather towards what was very likely to be a hostile, unfaithful and actively unpleasant one.

It's unusual for me to read a romance where I found the romances of those who AREN'T the leads more interesting, such as Morry and Miss Bainesworth and even Francis and Bertie! I don't dislike Amy or James, but I just didn't find myself as invested in them and their path to their happy ending as I expected as I read. The latter section works well overall however, although the twist about James' aunt felt superflouous and I felt the story would have been better without it, but perhaps I am weird!

To summarise, I really enjoyed this novel's sense of place and time, which is richly described and thus absorbing. It's been interesting to find out what life was like in and around the Belgian town of Spa in the eighteenth century. The author is skilled at blending real historical facts, people and places with the fictional elements. Reading A Love Once Lost is almost like climbing into a time capsule for an evening! So despite a few snags along the way, I like the Bridwell family and am keen to read on in order to discover the stories of Hannah and Marianne.

The premise for A Love Once Lost by Jennie Goutet really drew me to this book. I am a sucker for a good second-chance romance. And I adore historical settings so much. When I read that this book would be set in Spa, Belgium I jumped at getting a review copy. I like when my historical romances teach me a thing or two, and I definitely learned a thing or two from this story. Spa was quite an interesting place, historically speaking. I found myself taking time away from the story to look up fashions and building names and site locations from this Georgian era. Quite fascinating! As far as the characters in this story go, I found George Moreau, James Fletcher’s best friend, to be a well-crafted foil character. He’s quite a good man. Injured in the military, George is at Spa seeking treatment. What I like the most about his character is his steadfastness. Even though he is injured, even though he is in pain and needs to use a cane to move, he’s out every day walking, working his leg to try for any healing he can get. George illustrates what it means to have hope and a very strong work ethic. George Moreau also has backbone…and lots of it. Especially when it comes to telling his best friend the hard truth needed to be heard. As far as James goes, I had a really difficult time accepting him as the hero of this story, especially in light of characters like George. He is pretty much the opposite of George in almost every way except for his steadfastness. He, like George, is steadfast, but it’s really in all the wrong ways. I struggled to buy the relationship between him and Amy because he is so oddly emotional. He flies off the handle based on pure assumption, and only uses his brain well after he’s had time to cool off. He also thinks he’s being pragmatic and noble in every situation, but he’s really just being a self-focused boy. Amy is so kind and considerate. She literally thinks of everyone BUT herself. She’s the kind of woman who would give away her winter coat if someone needed it. There’s a great scene where she actually saves the day, but to be honest, she’s too self-sacrificing. The kind where the person gets royally taken advantage of. James’s behavior made me struggle to trust he would be a good enough guy for a woman like Amy. There is a lot to appreciate about this story: the unique setting, Goutet’s Austen-esque approach to storytelling, and a delightful cast of secondary characters. Even though James fell flat for me, I still find this story a must-read for readers who love atmospheric, slow-burn historical romances and aren’t bothered by a frustrating hero.

Mary and James have their young relationship disrupted - her father announces that Mary will be wed to a man who is more than twice her age. Amy has expressed her total lack of interest in Mr. Bromley but her father is determined to follow proper Victorian protocol.

Things don’t go as expected. Readers will find Mary, her two sisters and father have left Kent, England, in 1764 and are experiencing a very humorous arrival on the shoreline to Ostend, Austrian Netherlands, in 1770. At her father’s insistence, the family is officially “on a Grand Tour” for two plus years.

After spending a few days of unorganized travel, the Bridwell family arrives in French speaking Spa, A. N./Belgium, where wealthy landowner, Cosmo. Bridwell, will receive treatment for pain. Spa is famous for their mineral springs touted for having healing properties. Imagine Amy’s total surprise when, from the lobby, while checking in, she sees James; sitting alone in the sitting room!

Unbeknownst to Amy, James has become a physician. He is experiencing difficulties establishing his practice and financial security. It’s not long before these two are speaking and filling in the details from the past six years. Amy is busy trying to keep her younger sisters in line, managing her bumbling, erudite father and fulfilling the social requirements; her least favorite task.

This is a second chance at love story. Amy and James begin to cautiously and properly investigate what happened during the six years they were apart. As they live day to day in Spa, they run into each other at social activities and steal moments together, beginning to build a new relationship.

Author, Jennie Goutet, does a fabulous job creating an immersive experience for readers. Well developed characters and lush descriptions of architecture, clothing and Georgian culture draws readers to experience the story vividly.

A LOVE ONCE LOST is book 1 in the Bridewell’s Grand Tour series. Book 2 is due July 2027 and features another of the Bridewell sisters in Paris; location two on the family’s Grand Tour of the Continent.

All the love for this amazing historical romance! Jennie Goutet’s one of my absolute favorites when it comes to gentle romances that express the deepest of emotions in picturesque settings. I was so excited to read this heartfelt second chance romance full of longing, regret, & hope. It’s a beautiful story of honorable intentions juxtaposed with a love that can’t be denied.

Amy Bridwell’s family is planning a Grand Tour of the Continent, the same trip she was supposed to take with her fiancé six years earlier. With no prospects of marriage & still heartbroken over her lost love, she reluctantly accompanies her widowed father & sisters to ensure the trip goes smoothly. Starting off in the famed resort town of Spa, Belgium, she hopes her father may find some respite from his rheumatism, but is surprised when the last man she expected to see is staying at the same hotel.

Six years earlier, James Fletcher asked Amy to marry him only to be denied & see the love of his life become engaged to someone else all within minutes of his proposal. With bitter sadness, he fled to the Continent where he discovered medicine & is now embarking on a career as a physician in the fashionable town of Spa. Newly engaged to be married, he’s shocked to run into the woman he’s never forgotten. Seeing Amy again stirs up all the old longings & feelings he’s tried to bury. Despite his engagement being one of convenience & not a love match, he’s still determined to be honorable & keep his heart & word intact.

I absolutely adored this story! Ahh, the longing & regret is so palpable. Amy & James are so honorable. I enjoyed seeing them untangle their misunderstandings. Despite their feelings, they’re committed to doing the right thing. James’ fiancee is definitely not worthy of him. She’s not in love with him, knows he’s not in love with her, yet persists. I was hoping all throughout that there’d be a way for James & Amy to be together.

The beautiful setting of Spa was so unique. I enjoyed learning more about its history & curative waters. Also loved Amy’s family, the princess, & James’ friends, & can’t wait for the next book! Highly recommend this achingly lovely Georgian romance. I received an advanced copy with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

“Amy, I cannot lose you. Not again. My life has no . . . no spark in it when you are not here.” She rested her hands on his arms, looking up at him. “I do not want to lose you either.”

This amazing second chance romance has all the heartbreak and yearning! I was drawn in from the prologue and struggled to put it down until the satisfying epilogue. I enjoyed this new setting and all the fantastic characters (even the “villainous” ones).

Amy is kind, loyal, and devoted to her family. I loved her gentle care of her father. I enjoyed her relationship with her sisters and friendship with Rebecca. Her struggles with her heartbreak and attraction were palpable! I loved the grace she exuded in every situation. I loved that despite the circumstances she and James were able to have honest conversations. I loved her determination to see him succeed. James is intelligent, honorable, and determined. He fights his feelings hard, which in his situation was a good thing. His commitment to keeping his word and doing what was right even at the expense of his happiness was amazing! I loved his relationship with Morry, especially their honest, encouraging conversations. I loved his determination to make the best of his situation and to have his baths succeed. I loved the chemistry between Amy and James! There were so many emotions and a few times that I truly couldn’t see them having a happily ever after.

A few more quotes:
“A man does not write to a woman engaged to someone else. You should have let me know your heart was free.” Amy stilled, her lips drawing into a firm line. “A woman does not send letters to a gentleman who has not invited her to such intimacy and in fact has left her without a word.”

“Although it is too late to remedy the situation, I feel compelled to apologize for giving up on our courtship—on you—so easily.”

“Despite the six years that have passed since we last met, my feelings for you have gone through very little change. They were merely . . . buried.”

Rounding up from 3.5⭐️

This is the first book in a historical romance series and tells a story centered around second chances, childhood sweethearts, unresolved feelings, family, and the hope that love can find its way back after years apart. The novel follows Amy Bridwell as she travels through Europe with her family on their Grand Tour and unexpectedly comes face to face with James Fletcher, the man she once planned to spend her life with. Now they must confront the past and their lingering feelings.

The standout feature was undoubtedly the historical setting and attention to detail. Much of the story takes place in the town of Spa, Belgium, and the author does a beautiful job bringing this famous destination to life. Through descriptions of the town, its social scene, customs, architecture, fashion, and daily life, I felt immersed in the period. It’s clear that she put a tremendous amount of research into the novel, and her love for history shines through on every page. I especially enjoyed learning about the fashions, language, and traditions of the time, which added richness and authenticity to the story.

This is very much a slow burn romance, and while slow burn could be good, I struggled to become emotionally invested in Amy and James's relationship. The romance felt more told than shown, and I never quite felt the depth of their connection despite the story emphasizing their shared history and unresolved feelings. Because of that, it was difficult for me to fully connect with the characters or root for their reunion in the way I had hoped.

That said, I think many readers will enjoy this, for me the slow pace and lack of depth in the romance was the issue but I can certainly appreciate the care that went into the historical research.

"The world is a book," her father began. "And those who do not travel read only one page."

If you've ever dreamed of a Grand Tour of the Continent as is read about in many a historical romance novel, you will feel as if you've have enjoyed one by reading this book. Albeit being the 1700's, wearing much different clothes than we would be comfortable in now.

An eccentric widowed father, 2 younger sisters with varying interests, and Amy- the oldest daughter who feels as if it is her responsibility to keep the household running smoothly and plan the details of their tour- set out to enjoy their trip. Amy, has built a wall around her heart after being hurt by love 6 years earlier, but is excited for new places, new friends, and new experiences.

When she sees James, her missed chance at love, when visiting Spa, Belgium- those buried feelings find their way to the surface. He has a budding medical practice in Spa which she was unaware of due to their lack of communication after a hurtful breakup. That is, until she meets his betrothed. She is one of those love to hate characters that keep s story interesting and make you want to jump into the story and explain to the people what they are blind to.

"The depth of emotion in seeing her surprised him after all of these years. It was dashed inconvenient."

Healing waters, grand halls and sneaky people keep the story rolling along at a fast clip. The beginning was a little slow for me, but once I was invested- it flew by too fast.

The side characters are equally enthralling- you feel for them and want to know more. I am excited for more of the stories- especially those of the sisters.

"Curiosity is, in great and generous minds, the first passion and the last."

"My advice to you is not to spend too much time waiting for the perfect conditions to fall into place before you begin pursuing matters of the heart."

I received an eARC from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest opinion.

A Love Once Lost is the first book in the Bridwells' Grand Tour series which revolves around the three Bridwell sisters. Book one tells the story of oldest sister Amy and James Fletcher, her first love who she's never forgotten. Set within the historic region of Spa in the Austrian Netherlands (later Belgium), where the Bridwells' have come to take the waters, our protagonists come face to face for the first time in over six years.

I love a well researched historical romance and A Love Once Lost is certainly that. It was obvious the author did her due diligence when it came to the town of Spa, the structures present during the book's timeframe, the social activities of The Quality, and on the healing waters themselves. I appreciate the attention to historical detail the novel has. Nothing is lacking here.

It's the romance itself and the plodding pacing I had a hard time with. The momentum is so slow for at least 50% of the novel it made it difficult to stay engaged with. Also, the writing style is heavily Telling style and not enough Showing style. I didn't ever feel like I was being shown what the characters were living or feel emotionally engaged with the storyline itself. There's a certain flatness to everyone and everything that made the story not come to life in an engaging way.

Amy and James relationship didn't work for me. Too many assumptions, lack of communication and no expression of deep emotions. Even in a no spice romance there can be a sense of love and longing, but this too felt flat.

I had high expectations for this but feel as if it could've been better. The plotline itself and attention to historical detail hold so much potential. For me the writing simply didn't meet it.

I'd still recommend this to Hist-Fic and Hist-Rom fans. Just because it wasn't my cup of tea doesn't mean it won't be theirs.

A hard fought second chance romance.

Amy and James had so many obstacles in the way of their love. First an unplanned and unexpected proposal from another man, many years apart, financial hurdles, a recent engagement, and family not approving.

Amy is the backbone of her family. After her heartbreak from James six years ago she finds herself on a grand tour with her family in the same town as James.

James is one of Spa's practicing physicians. He is recently engaged to a fellow physician's daughter, and after Amy arrives in Spa is doing everything he can to get out of his arrangement.

This story felt like I was reading through a magnifying glass with how many details there were. While I liked all the research the author put into the history, language, and fashion for me it was overly detailed and it took me out of the story. The characters were also hard to connect with because the beginning scene which is what we have to base the WHOLE of the book off of was very short and didn't show either of them in the best light. I felt like the rest of the book I was playing catch up to like them and maybe arrived there by the end. The story did finally pick up 70% of the way through.

There were also a lot of characters introduced all at the same time, which was really hard to keep track of. I did really enjoy James friendship with Morry and the happy ending he got. However, the financial problems of James and the repetitiveness of it got very old. I liked the concept but the delivery was a little lacking for me. Overall, if you want a little different take on a regency romance with lots of specific details this book is for you!

This is literally the most Jane Austen-esque book I’ve ever read! I was completely enthralled with the storyline, the character development, the Georgian era charm, the Bridwell family, and most certainly the romance. I am in awe at Jennie’s mastery of writing and how poetically she shaped this story. I don’t exaggerate when I say I felt like I was swept up in one of Austen’s novels; it was exquisite.

Both Amy and James have paths wrought with friction—some due to their own failings, some because of their circumstances, and some a result of others’ neglect. The conflict was palpable! Especially the internal conflict. Each character wrestles with feelings of regret and longing, bitterness and resentment, hope and despair. I was so impressed with the pacing of the story that allowed you to marinade in some of the difficult emotions and really feel for James and Amy. Each conversation between them feels significant and special; each one is taut with longing and confessions begging to be voiced but not dared given the circumstances.

I was rooting so hard for James and Amy to get their happily ever after! I loved the mood of this second-chance romance that has all the Persuasion vibes (but I honestly liked this storyline better…don’t come after me lol). I loved learning more about Spa and the practices and customs there. The book was rich with history and culture!

If you’re a fan of yearning, wrongs made right, fighting for love, second chances, or Jane Austen, then don’t sleep on this book!

A Love Once Lost transported me so completely into its world that I felt like the unseen fourth Bridwell sister—quietly observing the lives, conversations, and emotions unfolding around me. The author’s attention to historical detail is exceptional, from the carefully researched vocabulary to the vivid descriptions of fashion, food, and transportation in 18th-century Europe.

What makes this novel especially refreshing is its setting. In a genre often dominated by World War II-era fiction, this story offers readers a richly immersive look into a different historical period. The writing is elegant and engaging, capturing both the charm and constraints of the era with remarkable authenticity.

Amy and James are compelling protagonists whose relationship is shaped by the rigid social expectations of their time. For reasons thoughtfully developed throughout the novel, they are unable to pursue their love, and James eventually becomes betrothed to another. Years later, fate brings them both to Spa at the same time, reigniting emotions and tensions that never fully disappeared.

There is never a dull moment in this beautifully researched and emotionally engaging novel. It is one of only three print books I have read this year, and I eagerly look forward to reading more from this author. I received my copy from NetGalley, and I appreciate the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

A Love Once Lost is a Georgian era, slow burn, second chance romance set in the town of Spa in Belgium. It was really interesting learning about this place, and this time period that I don’t know much about. It is a beautiful and intriguing setting for sure. I can tell the author really researched and loved the setting. She put so many details in that made you feel like you were there.

The style of writing also makes you feel like you stepped back in time.

I loved getting Amy and James’s backstory, and I couldn’t wait to see how things would work out between them.

James and Amy really have to patiently fight for their happy ending, and speaking of the ending, it really warmed my heart for them!

I enjoyed the Bridwell family. I love the sisters and their quirky, academic father. This series follows the Bridwell sisters and each will get their own story!

If you enjoy slow burn romances, in a historically rich, and unique European setting, then I think you will enjoy this gentle romance.

Such a sweet second chance romance with a beautifully historical setting, packed full of characters I was totally invested in by the end of the story!

Amy and James were once determined to marry despite their families standing in the way. But with James unable to provide for her, Amy turns down his proposal and later accepts a match chosen by her father, shattering both of their hearts. Years later, they unexpectedly cross paths again while James is engaged to another woman for financial security, not love. With old feelings rushing back, they are forced to face whether timing has truly kept them apart... or if there may still be a chance for them after all.

This was a sweet story, and I can appreciate the time and effort Jennie put into the historical accuracy of the story. I do think at times the story was wrapped in so many details that I found myself wanting more dialogue, but all in all it was still a wonderful read. The side characters were quite entertaining. I do wish I could have experienced James and Amy's feelings more versus just being told of them. I struggled to truly believe their heart for each other, but that may have just been me. I am happy to see another romance is around the corner for next summer for this series.

I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.

While Regency Romance seems to be all the rage currently I am so happy that Jennie decided to go with the Georgian Era for her newest series. Historical readers definitely need more of this period!

A Love Once Lost is second chance romance between Amy and James who had their relationship hopes dashed by their fathers. James’ father refused his desire to marry Amy. And Amy’s father announced her betrothal the very night against her wishes. Devastated, James leaves for his grand tour to escape the pain and disappointment of seeing Amy’s engagement played out in society.

It isn’t until years later that he discovers Amy is unmarried and presently in his new town of residence. But he can’t go back to the way things were, as he has formed his own attachment out of defeat (not out of affection).

With Amy’s father visiting Spa for its supposed healing properties and James being groomed as the town’s next presiding physician it is inevitable that their paths cross. Feelings long thought buried resurrect. Yet his duty and commitment far out weigh his long and lost love.

I enjoyed this sweet story. Amy and her sisters are darling and I’m excited for the continuation of the series.

Thank you Jennie and Haven for the gifted paperback , and ebook advanced copies. All opinions are my own.

If you want a delightful romance set in the fascinating Belgian town of Spa in Georgian times then this book is for you. I loved how it took the Grand tour idea commonly held for males of the time and flipped it into the family going on tour.

The story is about Amy, the eldest and responsible daughter, and James, second son, who grew up on neighbouring properties. A youthful romance was thwarted by their families and they lost track of each other. However 6 years later they both end up in Spa, James as an emerging physician trying to grow a sustainable practice and Amy with her family taking their grand tour. Of course they can't just fall in love again, that would be too easy, but it was entertaining to read about the bumps along their journey back together.  I really enjoyed some of the side characters and meeting Amy's sisters who I assume get their own stories later in the series.

I found the story a bit slow on the start but found the second half flowed better and fully caught my attention. It was an engaging and sweet read just perfect for an evening when you want to relax. I really enjoyed learning some of the history of the time and about the town of Spa in the 18th century. I feel like this book has set up the rest of the series well and I'm keen to keep reading.

I have listened to nine audiobooks by Jennie Goutet, and A Love Once Lost is her first book I have read. I definitely appreciate the writing more with a physical or ebook. The language is beautiful! I had to look up definitions, which I consider a plus, and I can highlight my favorite passages.

I fell in love with these characters and was invested in their lives. Oh, the angst, the heartbreak, the yearning. I was teary-eyed a few times. I was amazed at the commitment of the MMC to do what was right, at the risk of his own happiness, while another character was so thoroughly selfish. He is the best of gentlemen!

The family relationships and frienships in the community all grow. I was immersed in this setting and long to visit such a quaint town.

Ms. Goutet did a beautiful work of portraying these characters realistically, and I wondered who woukd be ruined and who would be redeemed. There's a little bit of a whodunit and guessing at who the scoundrel will be.

A Love Once Lost is the first in a new trilogy by Ms. Goutet, and I look forward to these characters' stories, as I have enjoyed all of her books.

Kisses only (level 1)
No profanity
Happy ending

Expect:
- Second chance love
- slow burn
- forbidden love
- forced proximity

One of my favorite parts of this book was the setting - the Georgian Era on Continental Europe. I loved being transported to a time of powdered wigs, elaborate fashions, and fascinating social customs. I had also never heard of the town of Spa before, and learning about the town’s famous mineral springs and the rituals surrounding them was absolutely fascinating. Discovering both a new-to-me time period and a corner of Europe I’d never encountered in fiction (or real life) made the story feel like a grand adventure. 🥳

The characters were wonderfully multidimensional—messy, imperfect, and beautifully human. Watching them grow and learn from their mistakes was one of my favorite parts of the story. 💛

The prose had the elegance and complexity of a classic novel. It reminded me of reading Austen, with rich vocabulary and beautifully crafted sentences that felt authentic to the period. I even found myself looking up a few new words along the way! It made my literature-loving heart happy. 🤗

And of course, the romance was everything I love in a good slow burn—full of tension, yearning, stolen moments, and the kind of quiet pining that makes you want to turn the pages faster. The forbidden nature of their relationship only heightened the emotional stakes, and I loved watching their feelings unfold.

Content/ triggers
- a man attempted to push himself on a woman against her will but he was stopped before she came to physical harm however, it was emotionally distressing
- disordered eating (not eating enough)
- illnesses
- death of family members (off page)

- infidelity hinted at (side characters)
