Robert Langton is back from his travels and imprisonment in North Africa, but suffering from PTSD and survivors' guilt, neither of which, of course, were recognised in 1477. The King gives him a hero's welcome which sits most uncomfortably with him in his state of mental anguish.
As his wife, Isabel tries to reach the man who has returned as a stranger to her, Edward IV is busy trying to secure his throne against rumour, counter rumour and treasonous plots at home and abroad. Pamphlets questioning his legitimacy are being spread throughout the capital and it's imperative that he trak down their source and sponsor. The discovery brings difficult choices, heartache and consequences that would have been unthinkable just a year or two previously. In his muddled and vulnerable state, Lord Langton fails to see the danger in which he is implicated and needs to regain his clarity even as he must prove his own loyalty to the Crown.
A fitting ending to an outstanding series covering some of the crucial years of the War of the Roses. Claire Dunn has created credible characters and cleverly placed them at the heart of the action, drawing the reader into her immersive world. Highly recommended.
