Well, I didn't think it was possible, but there's a new Ottawa Otters hockey boy who's stolen my heart from Foster James.

I have loved all of K.M.'s books, and they just keep getting better and better! Faking Seasons Bright is the third book in her Ottawa Otters series, and if you haven't read this series yet (or Ice Shy, the spin-off series featuring Coach Stetson), then you are seriously missing out!
In this book, we get Austin, the team's resident playboy with all the good looks and charm to win just about anybody over. And from the moment he lays eyes on Bailey Gates, the goalie for Ottawa's professional women's hockey team, he's done for. Too bad for him, she wants absolutely nothing to do with him and his playboy ways. 😂
The two end up dancing together at a charity gala, which kicks off a nearly year-long text message exchange filled with flirty banter and lays the foundation for their friendship. But when Bailey's older brother and her best friend announce their engagement, she learns that her cheating ex will be the best man. To avoid having to spend any more time with the man who broke her heart, Bailey lies to her family and tells them she'll be bringing her new boyfriend to the wedding. Naturally, she asks Austin, who's been crushing on her BIG TIME, to play the part. And of course, he agrees! He's not about to pass up the chance to spend more time with his dream girl, and dating Bailey is also good for his efforts to reform his playboy image.
At first, Bailey is reluctant to open her heart to Austin, but the more time they spend together, the more she realizes he's nothing like she thought. He's genuine, thoughtful, observant, selfless, and, most importantly, her number one fan. The way this guy shows up for her, worships her (both in and out of the bedroom), supports her, cheers her on, and loves her unconditionally is just EVERYTHING you could possibly want in a book boyfriend.
But while I still love my big grump Foster James, Austin is playful and flirty and just makes every situation he's in better. And while he does so much to support Bailey, she shows up for him just as much. Their romance is so heartfelt, and their connection feels like the most natural thing in the world.
Sometimes, I get annoyed with the fake-dating trope because I don't love the miscommunication that often comes with it. But we don't get any of that here! We don't have to watch these two struggle to accept what we can all see clearly on the page. Instead, we get to sit back and enjoy watching these two lovable characters find their person and their home in each other.
And if you can't tell by now, I'm just a big sap who loved every second of that! ❤️

I’ve been looking forward to it since the epilogue of “Check the Halls”
It’s just so joyful! I smiled the whole time I read it. It’s the perfect feel-good hockey Christmas romance.
Austin is seriously the sweetest and I just love him!
I started this last night. It was the perfect length, it moved so quickly and I could barely put it down. My vision went blurry last night when I should have been sleeping, but I kept trying for “one more chapter”
And then I had to pee so badly, but I sat here in pain until I finished the whole book.
So yes- read the Ottawa Otters series! They are all available on KU too!

Omg - I was giggling from the first text exchanges! What a fantastic edition to the Ottawa Otters series!
Between the interactions with the whole team, the insane family dynamics for both Bailey and Austin and the introduction of the MINKS Ottawa’s PWHL team - filled with so many spicy side characters I could not put this book down.
Ruthless could have a whole series herself, so I bet we’ll see more from her and the Minks. Oh and Bailey’s brothers are all professional BASEBALL players? Come on! Give me more.
The fake dating trope was extremely well executed. Ottawa weather was properly addressed and the feeling of being the ‘oddball’ of a family of genuinely talented individuals was really well plotted.
The gingerbread house competition was a great way to get little updates on characters we have grown to love from both the Otters and Legacy series’.
Bottom line, don’t ever question how much family over everything means - because they will have your back every damn time.

Bailey is immune to playboy hockey players. It's why she isn't responding to Austin's obvious attempts to win her over. But their relationship is evolving from nothing to long, witty and snarky texting to now, when she asks him to be her fake date to her brother's wedding so she can save face in front of her cheating ex. Her immunity to Austin's charm is about to be severely tested this holiday season.
Austin is down so bad the second he lays eyes on Bailey, and I was so here for it. I absolutely adored him with all his pining, his sweet, swoony charm, and how he stood up for her in every way. And Bailey - this girl is equally amazing. So strong, and funny as she did her best to resist Austin, but inevitably fell for him anyway. Women's sports have come so far since I was a little girl, and Bailey as a kickass goalie is the perfect role model and example of the elevation women's sports have been on the past few years. I want to read a lot more about them, The Otters, and hockey - women's and men's.

She's saved from having to dance with him when Austin, also a professional hockey player, "rescues" her. They dance, flirt a little, and Austin is hooked. Bailey is just out of a relationship, where we find out she was cheated on, and she's got her dukes up, to say the least.
Austin has a playboy reputation. TBH, I really hate the manwhore angle. Thankfully, Austin's is only referenced, not shown on the page, so this one is done well. We met Austin in Foster's book; he's actually the one who outed Foster and Beth. Austin has grown up a little and wants more.
He and Bailey basically text for about a year. He constantly comes up with ways to initiate the conversation; he repeatedly asks her out, which she declines. He's cute and persistent.
Her brother, Nick, announces he's getting married, and it's a Christmas Eve wedding. The tricky part is her ex, Aaron, is Nick's bff. No one in Bailey's family knows that he cheated on her. He's the best man, and she's maid of honor. Her mom is a complete dumbass and keeps pushing for her to get back with the ex. While talking about the wedding, Bailey says that she and Austin are dating and he will be her plus-one. After this, she meets with Austin, and they set up the whole fake dating that turns to real dating pretty soon.
Navigating all of this could be tricky. Their story is so worth the read!
😍 What I loved:
😍 I loved that Austin wasn't shy about wanting her. He basically told her from the jump that he wanted to date her. I like a man who goes after what he wants.
😍 I love that Bailey was a strong female. She didn't try to be a delicate flower like her mother. She accepted that she, as a goalie, would be a little bigger, that she needed to eat more etc.
😍 Austin is Bailey's #1 Fan and I was here for it. He recognized and acknowledged the inequity in women's sports; he wore her jersey; he called on her to be a replacement goalie during one of their games, and he didn't go into the press conference after b/c he didn't want to take away from her. In fact, one of my notes says: Austin being a total simp for Bailey is everything.
😍 Austin beats the breaks off her ex after the ex said some pretty bad things about Bailey during a game-he was chirping trying to get Austin's goat. Her family told her to break up with him blah blah blah...but Bailey stood by her man. Hey Alexa, play Tammy Wynette.
👎What I didn't love:
👎Austin admittedly sleeps/slept around, and he's shocked that's all people see him as. Yeah...that's what you've shown them.
👎 During his nearly a year of texting Bailey, he texts her on his bday. We find out later that he hooked up with someone else that night. Now, that said, there hasn't been anyone since that time, which was March, and he and Bailey get together roughly 7 months after.
Honestly, that's it. I loved this book. I read O Goalie Night and I LOVED it. I love a book with no third act breakup. Honestly, that's a big one for me. Excellent read :)

Honesty first: I signed up for this ARC because it's Christmas and I have Christmas running in my veins.
I didn't know this author before. Now that I do? I am NEVER letting K.M. Gillis far away from me.
Because I loved this book. And I am not exaggerating, I really LOVED it.
The main characters, the banter between them, how they are both pro hockey athletes.
And let me tell you about the fake dating: so well written. I know it is a common trope, but the author did this one SO good, so real, so believable perfect.
I was reading and smiling all the way, and you KNOW there is nothing fake between those two and you just can't not read.
Austin: NHL star, so funny, so flirty, so sweet. And patient with/gone for Bailey. I loved how the author wrote him: a young (25) man who knows how to stop being a playb0y and falls hard for one woman.
Bailey: PWHL goalie, a strong, career driven, tough woman. Also 25 and desperately needing someone to show her how amazing she is. I loved her best friend Ava, that's what friends are made of.
Did I mention I LOVED this book? I stayed up late and got up early and I was in love with this story from chapter 1. I am adding it to my 2026 favorites.

Before I started this book I felt like a Gremlin in a candy shop; I was vibrating like a Looney Toons character hit with a sledgehammer. And now that I’m done? sigh oh that was lovely. truly lovely.
Right from the prologue I was laughing so hard! I received a review copy of this book, and I'm so excited to get to tell you about it!

This book had me laughing and raging (at the ex of course) and melting by turns. KM Gillis is an amazing author. She has taken talent and creativity and honed her skills every bit as much as a professional hockey player training and working out and going stick to stick over the puck drop. Her books are all net. Hat trick.
My favorite part of Austin and Bailey’s relationship is that they completely skip the long drawn out but it’s fake s/he can’t possibly feel the same miscommunication trope. Like her other books, healthy, open communication is coaching this team to victory.
There’s a series of moments toward the end of the book that moved me to tears; not sad heartbreak crying but soul deep, beautiful, [this would be a spoiler] tears. Let me put it to you this way, I’m going to finish this paragraph and then I’m going to go reread it.

Who doesn’t love a wedding?!? Right now, Bailey. Her brother is getting married in two months, which is amazing news, except for the small fact that she’ll have to see her loser, cheating ex, aka her brother’s best friend and the best man. Leave it to her mother to take this as the perfect opportunity to get them back together. Ewww! No thanks. So when Bailey blurts out that she has a boyfriend to throw her mother off the scent, she needs a man and she needs one quick. Thankfully, she knows just the guy for the job.
Bailey is just so cool. She’s a kick ass goalie for the PWHL team, the Ottawa Minks, and she is fiercely dedicated to her sport and her team. But coming from a family of sports royalty as the youngest child and only girl, she’s always felt like she has something to prove. She struggles with insecurities that make her second guess herself, so having Austin in her corner, believing in her so wholeheartedly, catches her entirely by surprise.

These two together were a dream. I adored how transparent Austin was about his feelings and intentions. It was so refreshing and endearing. But that didn’t mean Bailey fell at his feet. She pushed back, kept him on his toes, and gave him shit, and he lapped it up!! There was no unnecessary miscommunication, no third act breakup, just feelings laid bare and two people figuring things out together. And honestly? It was absolutely perfect.
An added bonus was all the fun, quirky side characters. Some of these characters are definitely competing for centre stage, and I am just saying, a few of them absolutely deserve their own books!! This was such a fun, feel good read with the perfect mix of banter, swoon, humour, and heart. And now I’m back to waiting another year for book 4!

I love the Ottawa Otters. This series is my perfect venn diagram of Christmas and hockey romance. Faking Seasons Bright is the third in the series following NHL star Austin and PWHL goalie, Bailey. With a charming holiday backdrop, we see a fake dating dynamic between these two professional athletes where he falls first and harder. The banter is fun and the tension is high. The two being professional athletes highlights and appreciated the efforts both put into their careers and highlights women in sports without making it the central plot — like she plays hockey and is good and passionate but it's not her personality and I appreciate that. It breaks prejudices while maintaining the love story and growth journeys I'm actually here to read. The romance was sweet and swoony and he really falls hard and WEARS HER JERSEY — love. The wedding drama at the end felt a little rushed, but ultimately I'm glad all the conversations that needed to be said were said at the rehearsal and not the wedding day. I felt and saw genuine growth from both Bailey and Austin and I absolutely believed their romance. The friend group of the Otters and even the addition from the Legends series was subtle but just enough to give me the found family I wanted to see. I cannot wait for Will and his story next year, but in the meantime, add this to your TBR!

I just adore a fake dating trope, and this one was done so well, I simply ate this up. He falls first and harder, pines after her, supports her every chance he gets and takes care of her? Yes to all of it!
I fell so hard for Austin, it's unreal; he's supportive and sweet and funny, a reformed playboy who yearns for her so much that he agrees to fake date her in the hopes that it'll turn real, and I loved every second of it.
Bailey was such a great FMC, I love a strong woman who isn't afraid to show her soft side too, who takes no sh*t from any man but also accepts help when she needs it. I loved seeing her relationship with her family improve throughout the story, and the way Austin came to her defense swiftly whenever there was any hint of her family underappreciating her. There would be no disrespecting his girl on his watch, and it was HOT.
This was swoony and playful and spicy and so so good, with some Holiday cheer mixed in but still remaining mostly a hockey romance; perfect for those who enjoy holiday romances that aren't too Christmas-y.
Also female athletes in sports romances? More of that please!
Very very excited for Will's story next year too! I just loved seeing glimpses of past couples from her other books too (though this can absolutely be read as a standalone!), it added a nice wink for fans of her other books.

I have been LOVING the Ottawa Otters series and Faking Series Bright ABSOLUTELY 100% BLEW ME AWAY!! I was hooked on Bailey and Austin from the very first page and literally could not put this one down (hello reading a book in 24 hours). I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with two stunning characters who truly needed one another to become to best versions of themselves (and learn so much on the journey they took together). K.M. had this story DOWN it was seamless, and flowed in the rare way that you are immersed in the story and never want to leave.
The banter between Bailey and Austin was delicious, the softer moments had me in a chokehold, the romance had me swooning, and I was rooting for them every step for the way. The found family vibes continue to grow in this series (I love seeing some of my favorites in each of the books) and the way K.M. handled blood related family was perfection. I loved the hint of drama, the antics between all the side/main characters, and just every single sentence I read. I'll say it again and again that this is undeniably a 5 star read that will have you smiling long after you put it down (and then immediately pick it back up to do a re-read).
Go run and pick this one up because you do not want to miss out!! Absolutely re-readable, obsession level is so high, want everyone to pick it up!!!

Thanks to K.M. Gillis and House of Hearts for the advanced copy of Faking Seasons Bright! I’ve been looking forward to this book and ended up finishing it in one day. It was just that good, I couldn’t put it down!
My favourite part of this was definitely Austin and Bailey’s banter, because both of them can give as good as they get without taking anything personally. It was a fun way to see their connection grow as they got more comfortable with each other. I appreciated how respectful Austin was of Bailey’s boundaries and just how he treated her as a person and hockey player (as we all know that male hockey players tend to be… misogynistic).

Bailey knows the only way to get her ex off her back is to invent a new boyfriend. With Austin already showing interest, Bailey proposes a fake dating situation, just until her brother's wedding is over so she can at least have a date. But with both Austin and Bailey being hockey stars, their fake relationship finds itself all over social media too. We all know what happens when fake dating gets involved right? :)
This is my favourite book of the series so far! I absolutely loved Bailey and Austin's story. It might only be October, but I’m excited to share my first holiday romcom recommendation 🎄
KM Gillis absolutely knocked it out of the park with Faking Seasons Bright, the third book in the Ottawa Otters series, a hockey holiday romance! Our MMC is Austin who we know as the flirty friend and teammate on the Otters and our FMC is Bailey, a goalie for the PWHL.
One of my favorite things is discovering there’s so much more beneath the surface to a character! Austin doesn’t have the best reputation in the previous books in the series, but once he knows he wants Bailey, we learn what an incredible man he is. KM Gillis absolutely knocked it out of the park with Faking Seasons Bright, the third book in the Ottawa Otters series, a hockey holiday romance! Our MMC is Austin who we know as the flirty friend and teammate on the Otters and our FMC is Bailey, a goalie for the PWHL.
One of my favorite things is discovering there’s so much more beneath the surface to a character! Austin doesn’t have the best reputation in the previous books in the series, but once he knows he wants Bailey, we learn what an incredible man he is. The moment they agree to fake date you know they’re going to be so good for each other!

Gillis does a few things really well. Banter and chemistry between the FMC and MMC and an MMC who is absolutely smitten and gone for his girl are some of them. I had fun. Austin was flirty, funny and adorable. His attraction to Bailey was not only physical. He respected her and made sure she knew it. He was attentive, considerate and protective. Bailey was smart and careful, strong but also vulnerable. I liked these two and wanted their HEA.
This one was my favorite of the series because I really enjoyed the family dynamics as well, especially Bailey’s relationship with her brother and the way her and her mom worked out their issues.
These books are not masterpieces, okay? This is why rating books is hard, but also completely nonsensical. I rate books based on very different criteria depending on what the book is about, its purpose, genre, my mood, etc. This book was great as far as “silly, don’t have to think, a good time, but had heart” books go.
This one was my favorite of the series because I really enjoyed the family dynamics as well, especially Bailey’s relationship with her brother and the way her and her mom worked out their issues.

This was such a fun and refreshing holiday hockey romance and I absolutely loved it!
Fake dating, ex-drama, family issues, and a golden-retriever reformed playboy hero who falls first and harder?
YES PLEASE.
Austin and Bailey were so much fun together, and I was completely glued to the pages. Not a moment where I wanted to put this down! I was invested in them, from the text conversations at the start, to how he just continued to be there for her in all the mays that she needed.
A little emotional at times, but the story wouldn’t have been the same without those particular storylines…
I also loved the secondary characters, and now I’m very excited for Will’s story!
This was s sweet, slightly steamy, funny hockey romance with great chemistry, all the holiday feels, and I am so glad I got to read this early!

This was so fun and a great read to start off the holiday season. I will always love a book where she’s is an athlete and a book where they are both athletes is even better. I loved the women in sports representation and how supportive Austin was from the very beginning. The pacing was great in the sense that I was never bored. I loved getting to know both Austin and Bailey’s teams and the found family was great. I do think that the ending was almost too happy and I would’ve loved for the tensions to have been resolved over more than just a chapter. I also would’ve loved to have seen a little bit more of their romance in the future because I could’ve easily read another 100 pages of them. But ultimately, I had a great time and when it’s closer to Christmas I will be picking up the first two books in this series.

I love my men down bad hard and fast, and this book delivers on that. This book was cute, wholesome, sweet and quick, exactly what I’m looking for in a holiday romance! I also love that our FMC is a professional athlete, I feel like we don’t get enough of that in F/M romances, as most of the time if thr MMC is the athlete, the FMC isn’t. This was the cutest hockey romance with my favorite trope (fake dating). Austin and Bailey had the most fun meet cute and the text messages throughout were entertaining. I loved their fake relationship and even while it was fake, Austin took it very seriously and it was obvious how much he cared and adored her. I loved their fake how he protected her and took up for her when it came down to it. Even though Bailey is strong and independent, Austin wasted no time making sure she didn’t have to be all the time. This is the perfect book for a cute and swoon romance, especially if you’re in the mood for a holiday read but not over the top Christmas themed.

I had been waiting and waiting for this book to arrive and then I devoured it in 3 sittings 😭 who is inventing time travel so I can go back and read it again for the first time? Thank you to House of Hearts and K.M. Gillis (the author) for providing me an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so worth the wait. I was literally giggling by page 23 because the text bantering was so good! The mutual yearning and the way he really saw and took care of Bailey was everything. I loved watching Austin’s character grow from who we’ve known in the earlier books. I loved Bailey too, and it was so fun reading from her POV as a professional female athlete and general badass. Her family dynamics added a lot to the story, and I hope we get to hear more from the Gates family in future books! K.M.’s books are always the perfect combination of entertainment and substance and FSB was no exception. My only complaint is that I wish it had been longer because I didn’t want to stop reading about Austin and Bailey! I have no choice but to rate it one million stars.

I adored seeing Austin and Bailey together. You could see how invested Austin was with Bailey through all of their texts. He was falling for her before anything was even being established. Her family did annoy me at times. Just because she was a daughter didn't mean she wasn't a great athlete and person. It seemed they held everyone else on a different pedestal and didn't appreciate her. Enter Austin with every interaction he showed her how much he valued her and appreciated everything about her. He treated her exactly how she was supposed to be treated. You can't read this story and not end up loving Austin.

This book was so freaking funny and fun and adorable all rolled together!
Austin is a pretty calm and jovial guy until pushed. Bailey is wound pretty tight and he helps her step out of her comfort zone a bit.
I loved watching them come together as friends and then start their “fake” relationship which as he tells her multiple times he was never faking and she fell for him in the process ❤️
Her family is fun and funny and rambunctious!
Loved that her BFF married one of her brothers making them legally sisters.
I seriously giggled so much throughout this book and will solidly reach out for more of this world!

There’s so much I loved about this hockey romance set in Ottawa!
Austin and Bailey were so fun together and I really loved the fake dating premise- it worked perfectly here. Almost an entire year of banter through texting? It was delightful. Bailey was confident and fierce and talented and knew it, and Austin was drawn to her for all of that. I looooved her moment (EBUG glory!!), and how excited Austin was for her and how he only ever kept the spotlight where it should be- on her. There were just a lot of solid moments that stood out to me and I can’t believe I haven’t read the others in the series- definitely going back to rectify that!
