The previous two volumes of this danmei were already impressive, but this one was exceptional. The way the plot gradually intensified, steadily building tension until it resulted in the fall of a dynasty, was executed so skillfully. The political intrigue woven throughout this volume became even more captivating.
While the plot is compelling, the true heart of this danmei lies in its characters.
Jiang Suizhou's character arc was crafted with remarkable depth and nuance. In this volume, he demonstrated even more the advantages of being a transmigrator (and a history professor), skillfully using his superior intellect to compensate for his physical vulnerabilities. His strategic mind and resilience made him an easy protagonist to root for.
Furthermore, Huo Wujiu became my personal favorite character in this volume. The author portrayed his development with such conviction that he radiated the aura of a capable and commanding general. I admire characters who stay calm and make clear judgments during intense, high-stakes moments, those who act decisively without hesitation. Huo Wujiu embodies this trait, indifferent to others' opinions but fiercely protective of those he cares about. His integrity and strength earned my respect and admiration.
The relationship between Jiang Suizhou and Huo Wujiu develops gradually, evolving from strangers to close allies, and finally to lovers. This slow-burning romance was depicted with subtlety and grace, avoiding melodrama. Their interactions, especially the shift from friendship to romantic attachment, felt natural and sincere. The scene where they confessed their feelings was profoundly touching, and the moments that followed were beautiful.
Huo Wujiu's transformation into a livelier, more spirited person around Jiang Suizhou was truly heartwarming. Seeing him realize he can rely on someone else (and that he is no longer alone) brought a genuine smile to my face. He finally found someone who waited for him, cared for him, and worried about him, someone he could genuinely call home. Similarly, Jiang Suizhou became more confident, allowing his true personality to shine, which was a joy to witness. His newfound ease and carefree attitude made him feel reborn.
I deeply cherish their relationship. Despite minor misunderstandings, they chose honesty over concealment. Even these small conflicts added depth and longing to their bond, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
In conclusion, volume 4 is the finale of this danmei, and with how this volume ended, I eagerly await what comes next.

Likewise, a minister should never bind himself to a single dynasty or ruler but to the people he serves. If ‘loyalty’ means chaining oneself to a sinking ship, then that loyalty doesn’t mean much at all.”
Gosh, I love this novel so much! I got so attached to the characters and by the end, I honestly didn’t want to let them go. Jiang Suizhou and Huo Wujiu completely won me over. I loved watching their relationship grow because it always felt natural. They never lost themselves after falling in love, and I appreciated that so much. They stayed true to who they were, which made every quiet moment, every conversation, and every bit of trust they built together feel meaningful. Jiang Suizhou’s way of thinking also made every emotional moment hit harder for me. Since he truly believes history already has its own course, every choice he makes carries so much hesitation and weight. You can feel how much he struggles with his own heart because he questions whether he even has the right to change anything. I found that conflict incredibly touching, and it made me even more invested in him.
The only thing that kept this from being perfect for me was the final conflict. I kept waiting to see Pang Xiao’s side because that was something I had enjoyed throughout the story. We usually get a glimpse of what he is planning or what is happening from his perspective, so I was surprised when that suddenly disappeared during such an important part of the novel. We are told how everything unfolded, but I really wanted to experience those moments with him. Pang Xiao has always been presented as this brilliant and cunning manipulator, so I wanted to see his mind at work when everything was reaching its peak. I still enjoyed those chapters, but I couldn’t help feeling a little unsatisfied because I was looking forward to seeing how he handled everything himself.
I also found myself feeling unexpectedly sad for the emperor. There was one moment when Pang Xiao thought about him as a child, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterward. It made me wonder how someone who was once just an innocent kid could grow into the person he became. No matter how terrible someone’s actions are, there was still a point where they were simply children who depended on the people around them. I know that opens a much bigger conversation about nature versus nurture, and this definitely is not the place for that discussion, but I couldn’t help thinking about it. Moments like that gave the story even more depth for me. Even with my frustration about Pang Xiao’s missing perspective, I genuinely loved this novel.

This volume was my favorite so far of the entire series. We finally got Jiang Suizhou and Huo Wujiu spending comfortable uninterrupted time together. Huo Wujiu finally released his inner playful big wolf energy and I loved it so much. Their relationship progressed so wonderfully in the volume. The drama was slowly simmering throughout this volume and his a crecendo by a little over halfway through. I'm always a sucker for strong and scary characters who are absolute puddle of goo around their partner so needless to say this couple brings me immense joy. Overall a fantastic continuation of the series with an exciting cliff hanger at the end of the book (not a serious one just a politically interesting one). Can't wait to finish this series in November. I wish them both all of the happiness and joy in the world.

To be honest, I’m quite disappointed with this volume of the novel. Many of the interesting supporting characters were sidelined or completely forgotten throughout the book, even during moments where their specific skills or narrative importance were actually needed.
And i can't not recognize that this was done solely to develop the main couple's relationship—and sure, that’s fine, since the novel’s focus is the romance—but even that aspect ended up being too much with Huo Wujiu practically turning into an overprotective and extremely jealous puppy toward Jiang Suizhou. Frankly, their yearning era was a lot better than this…

I absolutely adore this series, and this volume was pretty close to perfect for me. The build up to the confession, the confession itself, their lovey-dovey fresh couple era, they were just wonderful! The plot moved on significantly, too. I enjoyed the balance of romance and plot in this.

When I say I’m obsessed with this series, I mean I’m OBSESSED.
This may be my favorite danmei series?
I just can’t get enough of the dynamic here between our gentle, cunning but sort of pathetic meow-meow prince Jiang Suizhou and the fearsome, possessive and utterly besotted general Huo Wujiu.
It’s SO GOOD.
I love how their personalities play off each other—and, more, I appreciate how they complement each other.
It’s one of the few examples of a dark, dangerous character being soft only for their beloved that I actually enjoy.
I think that’s because this story actually does a decent job of establishing the strengths of both of our main characters early on. They operate on relatively even footing throughout.
While miscommunication occurs, it never overtakes the plot or results in either main character behaving badly towards the other. Rather, it’s used as a means of opening another line of communication, allowing our duo to connect better. I really like that—and I think that’s how miscommunication tropes should always play out?
Further, I find the dialogue and banter to be really enjoyable and SATISFYING.
Idk if this series just has a great translator or what but the conversations, flirting, and quips between characters are witty and compelling. Each character has their own cadence and personality that comes through in the dialogue choices. I appreciate that consistency.
Granted, this isn’t a super involved plot either. Things happen rather conveniently in the political and social spheres of this world—and our main characters are often two steps ahead. So, those circumstances do make it easier to come across as clever and strategic.
But, this series is also not the worst offender in this regard.
Again, things feel consistent for their world. It’s not distractingly bad and it makes for an interesting enough background to this transmigration, historical fiction queer romance.
To wrap up, I also LOVE the art style in this one.
It’s so sleek and stylized yet simple? More “cartoonish” than some other series, perhaps. But, only slightly. It’s pretty—I don’t know what else to say. And, that’s height difference????? Wonderful.
Anyway.
I love this series.
As always, I’d HIGHLY ENCOURAGE you to put down whatever mediocre read you’re slogging through and pick up this series instead.
Especially if you’re as burnt out on popular romance and romantasy reads as I have been—danmei satisfies all of that itch but the writing is much better and the tropes are perfected. Please consider converting~

3.5 stars. Again I read this relatively quickly (savoring over 3 days), but this feels like a transitional volume. The story switches focus from the Emperor and his uncle Pang Shao being the main antagonists and brings to the forefront another enemy. The stakes become higher, it's not just about corruption and petty vindictiveness, the stability of the country is in peril. And the relationship between our heroes Jiang Suizhou, the Prince of Jing, and Hou Wujiu, famed God of War, is changing too (finally).
A lot actually happens within this volume, and for the first time Jiang Suizhou and Hou Wujiu are separated for a while, and death and torture that's not so anonymous as in previous volumes happen. Because what was happening around the romance was darker in this volume, there were times I felt less interested in the comedic situations about their feelings. I still enjoyed reading the POVs of their loyal subordinates witnessing the romance (hilarious) and I enjoyed where the romance landed by the end of the book, but when events were too in flux, examining feelings felt like filler! Thankfully there were moments later on that were peaceful enough for me to savor their little love bubble. I am looking forward to Volume 4 and wondering how this will all end.

Well my favorite down bad tsundere and his oblivious scheming boyfriend are back at it. Taking over an empire? Check! An end to the miscommunication? Check! Kissing and being all cutesy? Check!
The writing in this book is so good, the author has a talent of infusing emotions into her writing. It’s visceral and the characters convey them so well. Being able to give depth to the most unlikable characters is always an indication of a brilliant writer for me.
This was such a fun, emotional, action packed, gritty addition to this series and I personally loved it!

A Great 3rd installment
Yay! The slow burn is finally ignited. I almost want to read all three volumes immediately again. I love them. Sometimes you forget that the Prince of Jing is a transmigrator because you get so wrapped up in the plot and I love Wanjun. And it was hilarious when they were both getting jealous about her. She was literally all of us, because she had them pegged immediately. I did miss Meng Qianshen's POVs in this volume though.
My favorite part below (spoilers):
"“Didn’t I teach you not to spout nonsense?” Huo Wujiu barked. “Look carefully. This is the Prince of Jing, and I’m his concubine. He’s my husband.” The word “husband” landed like a boulder. The man’s eyes bulged. Huo Wujiu pulled Jiang Suizhou against his side with one arm. “A wife follows her husband’s lead. All I own belongs to him, not just this measly throne. Even if I conquer the world, every inch of it will belong to him. Understood?”

A true slow burn to get to volume three and finally become a couple. What's more, we get one more volume where we can see how their relationship continues. Unlike other series that end once they confess and become a pair, they have to face one more conflict together.
I can't remember the last time I kick my feet while reading. They were so cute and precious with each other especially during their date at the festival. I think this was one of the fastest books I finished in a while.
However, it seems like the author forgot or dropped certain plot points. I really wish she utilized the prince's two advisors during this plot. Wasn't one of them in charge of the prince's secret squad? I know it wasn't an army but they could have used them. After they took over the palace, it would have been a good time to ask them what they wanted to do now. I know one wanted to return to his sick mother and the other wanted a powerful position.
The advisors were my favorite supporting characters, yet they were mentioned once for one scene with no dialogue. I really hope they are brought back for the next volume. Considering both know that the prince is a different person from a different world, I wonder if they will take part in the last volume.
I did enjoy the character development for the general, but maybe it was too drastic. In volume one the general barely interacted with the prince. Didn't even have his own plot yet. Now he is more comfortable with his prince to tease him and openly give affection. But I guess the pranks came too frequently. I think it's sweet that the general was always a feral and free spirit but was forced to confine himself to a wheelchair. I think I needed a slower transition with the teasing, it almost felt out of character with him since this was our first time seeing this version of him.
I really hope the author doesn't forget about the evidence that the prince grabs during the fire. It was in character of him to prioritize the general rather than his safety. But it would be a waste if they don't use it for their advantage. It worries me that the paper was stained with his blood and there was no mention that the general thoroughly looked at it.
I am still hopeful for the last volume. And I still wonder which of them or maybe both will become emperors.

One volume left to go! I'm honestly pretty surprised by the pacing, but not unhappy that the story's continuing past what I'd assumed would be the climax.
Most of the big upheavals that I'd been expecting happened in this volume, with much less drama than you might think. Which I suppose means the last bits might cause the true turmoil? For now, though, we're settling into the honeymoon stage, with Jiang Suizhou finally acknowledging both his own romantic feelings and the fact that it's pointless to keep trying to maintain the history as he knew it.
Even if he was sent back to his real world's past, his mere presence - and his attempts to stop his own execution - changed too many things. So he's given up now on trying to abide by any sort of fate or fact. Instead, his focus remains on keeping Huo Wujiu safe - now, simply because he's in love with him and can't stand to see a world without him thriving. In fact, his goal now is to ensure Huo Wujiu has a happier, more fulfilled life than he did in the history books, as a respected general who lived out the rest of his days in relative obscurity.
My only real complaints with this volume were that a lot of the other characters got kind of tossed aside - like Jiang Suizhou's two concubines, who are each mentioned a couple times in passing but fully disappear again for the entire second half of the book. I get that Jiang Suizhou is preoccupied with his devoted partner now, but I honestly would've expected him to keep his faithful advisors as part of the new nation-building.
Also, I was expecting a lot more surprise from various people, including Jiang Suizhou's devoted eunuch, when they saw Huo Wujiu walking around like his legs had never been mutilated...or even being mildly shocked by all the big emperor-overthrowing plans they kept having right in front of various servants.
But the story is so enjoyable to read, and the romance is so nicely developed, that I couldn't bring myself to care too much. I wouldn't say this is the most carefully plotted storyline, but it does hold together well enough, and it's hitting its emotional beats well.

This one might probably be my fav vol of the series. With the gradual plot build up, this one finally hit the climax resulting in the fall of the emperor and opposing fraction. The political intrigue here was on point and to be expected. I just wish there was a bit more to the opposing fraction since it felt like they were being so clever but nothing really amounted to that end…
On top of that the relationship between Jiang Suizhou and Huo Wujiu progressed with them finally taking their relationship to the next step. I love the slow-burn of their romance especially their subtle interactions to finally their confession of feelings - it was done so naturally.
Huo Wujiu’s character arc was also fun to read here given how proud and happy he is about the relationship that he can’t help but always want to be with Jiang Suizhou to shield and protect him despite Jiang Suizhou always wanting to just stand by his side. I love how they balanced each other out and let their true personalities shine with each other as they work together to rebuild the nation. It was also funny to see how Jiang Suizhou was rumored to be Huo Wujiu’s boytoy at one point to the misunderstanding of him refusing to share his real identity - that part made me laugh so hard! Their honesty and support for each other is refreshing to read!
Vol 2 begins with Jiang Suizhou getting well and the return of a famous general leading to the attempted raise of the opposing fraction and fall and with Huo Wujiu’s emperor uncle sending help with the crown prince of Liang joining that help when there is possible friction between him and Huo Wujiu.
I can’t wait for the vol 4 which will conclude this series!

A lot happens in this tale as events really pick up pace, not only within the politics but the romance and relationship finally comes together part way through this one which I adored.
It's interesting to briefly get insight into other characters povs as well as finally those in power fell, as Jiang & Huo rise. The way Pang and the emperor had caused their own downfall, in the lack of loyalty and trust broken.
So many sweet moments in this one as both are now aware of their own feelings and sorry over each other, the protectiveness and hurt/comfort throughout. I always enjoy their teasing and the push/pull between them, plenty of beautiful art as well and their first kiss so very fitting.
Huo & Jiang reveal their feelings in the midst of the action, yet it's so perfectly them and while bittersweet. Once recovery and healing starts, they instantly fall together so beautifully and I just loved getting to seem them openly share their feelings for one another.
The rabbit & wolf vibes, as they balance each other in the politics too and how others react to them as a pair. It was just enchanting to see them happy together and while not everything is resolved, they're slowly heading to a better future.

I just finished this book, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it! I loved how cute HWJ acts around his husband lol.
However, there's one critique I've been keeping to myself and it's the interior art. No offence to the artist, but the publisher could have easily skipped the illustrations altogether. The art style felt very unpolished, looking more like a rough, unfinished sketches rather than final pieces. Instead of adding value to the pages, it distracted a bit too much from the story. I hope one day they decide to stop putting inserts in mature novels as if they were for children.
Otherwise, I recommend it if you're looking for a easy reading.

This is the best volume in the series so far. All the groundwork and politicking finally came together to make things more interesting in the world outside of just the central romance plot. There were a few twist sand turns in the romance, but mostly it just ticks along steadily as both characters realise their feelings for each other.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this volume, though I'm not sure where it will go from here since the plot for this one felt climactic and huge and the thread that seems like it will continue into the final volume seems kind of anticlimactic in comparison. I guess we'll see.

This was everything I wanted!
The slow burn finally paid off. "All I own belongs to him, not just this measly throne. Even if I conquer the world, every inch of it will belong to him. Understood?" Huo Wujiu IS the standard. I was genuinely giggling and kicking my feet reading this.
Pang Shao and the emperor dying at last was also incredibly satisfying. As they say, no one mourns the wicked! The fact that Huo Wujiu went back to make sure Pang Shao haunted the right person, just in case, cracked me up. "Huo Wujiu didn't fear ghosts; he feared ghosts haunting Jiang Suizhou."
God, I wish volume 4 was out already.

I continue to love this a lot. They are finally together and have confessed their feelings and I could not be happier.
I love political stuff in my danmei, especially if they are done really well and go well with the overall romantic story, but strategy and palace court drama have never been my favorite. So a lot of focus to that in some chapters bored me a little. Pang Shao also still lives, so I hate that.
Those are the only reasons this does not get a 5 like the previous two volumes.

This is all I've ever dreamed about. Two individual characters who are smart and capable but suddenly sharing one single braincell when it comes to each other is always funny and sweet. The book starts off with both of them being so clingy, and thankfully the misunderstandings caused by mutual yearning and jealousy don't drag on for too long. And we finally get to see them together. The confession scene was also a classic rescue and 'last words' type. Never gets old and had me squeeling. The illustrations inside were gorgeous too
I can't wait to read the next and last (?) book.

I think we've reached the climax of the storyy yayy!! I'm really glad that the ml and mc has cleared up their feelings before this volume ended but I want to see more of prince Jing's concubines. I think they're so cool.
Overall a pretty heartwarming read and also kept me at the edge of my seat. I'm glad I started this one as a primer in terms of the very intricate court politics in danmei, it got me very interested!
I'll be waiting for Vol 4 !!!

Slow start or maybe i just wasnt in the right mood but i ended up loving it once i picked it back up.
Good pacing and theres great progress on the romance. I was annoyed at first because i thought it was going one way and it turned out i was wrong. We get to see some of their interactions with each other and the generals personality comes out more.
With a few more chapters (20 maybe) this could maybe have been the last one, so im curious what will happen next.
