From the author of the TikTok sensation Scars of Anatomy, this standalone is perfect for fans of hospital dramas and spicy medical romance such as Chicago Med and Scrubs.

"The romance is sweet, the banter is sassy, and the chemistry sizzles off the page." —Flynn Novak, author of Puck You

Delilah Harper is embarking on her biggest challenge yet after completing four years of medical school. With a residency at one of the best hospitals in the country, she’ll stop at nothing to achieve her dream of becoming a neurosurgeon. And that includes letting Bradly Gallow get the best of her.

Undeniably attractive, Bradly’s also arrogant and, unfortunately for Delilah, extremely intelligent. Since day one of medical school, Delilah and Bradly have engaged in a heated battle to mark their territory as the top student, acing every exam, excelling at every lab–lock step in terms of their achievements. As fate would have it, they match at the same hospital, carrying their rivalry across the country.

While battling to be the hospital’s top resident, the two begin the Brain Games—a competition in which they fight for the best cases and keep tabs to see who will finally get to assist during their first major surgery. The games seem simple enough, until a different sort of tension builds, and hidden feelings complicate their years-long rivalry. In this gripping and spicy medical drama, matters of the head and heart clash in ways that would bring even a neurosurgeon to their knees.

Brain Games was such a fun, tension-filled medical romance.

Two med students.
One top neurosurgery residency.
A rivalry that turns into a case-by-case tally game.
And very questionable professionalism 👀

I loved this fun, high-achiever romance. The competitive energy between them? So good. The “I need to beat you, but I also want you” tension? Even better.

I loved the neurosurgery setting — it made everything feel intense and high stakes. Their case-tracking competition during residency was such a clever way to keep the rivalry alive even after they both “won.”

It’s ambitious, flirty, dramatic in the best way, and gives strong academic rivals energy.

You’ll love this if you like:
🧠 Smart, driven main characters
🔥 Competitive banter
🏥 Medical setting romances
💘 Rivals-to-lovers

Brain Games is such a fun and quick read, and perfectly scratched the itch that settles in my brain as I impatiently wait for every Thursday to watch the newest episode of The Pitt.

Delilah and Brad have been rivals since their first day of med school, and that rivalry continues as they begin their neurosurgery residency at one of the top hospitals in the country. With a truce called, though that truce becomes a tally game where the book gets its title from, their competitive energy and tension are higher than ever as drama begins to unfold.

I was not a medical drama person growing up; I didn’t tune into Grey’s, General Hospital, or Scrubs because they never called to me. When I say the neurosurgery department setting called to me, it called to me. I absolutely loved it, especially going in and having a little bit more of an idea as to what it looks like and how it operates — no pun intended. It creates so much tension between the characters, both in their personal and professional lives, that you can’t put the book down because of it.

Although there were moments where she truly got to me (I wanted to shake her shoulders and tell her to slow down on the conclusion jumping), I did love Delilah and Brad’s characters. Both of them grow and develop throughout the story, something I feel like I don’t always see when it comes to MMCs. She is independent and knows her worth. I adored the conversation with her mom towards the final chapters as she comes to see her flaws; it felt real and honest, even if it happens quickly. He’s just as sharp and protective, and I loved how he takes the initiative to talk to her when something is wrong, no matter how vulnerable it may turn out to be. All in all, it was refreshing to read and watch them reach their HEA.

I genuinely had such a fun time reading this book; my book slump is truly and honestly behind me now, thanks to Delilah and Brad’s story. Now, I have to politely ask and beg that Ashlee get a book because she’s for real my girl.

Ok now that that is out of the way ……

I loved this book! The rivals to lovers, banter and heartfelt moments were to die for!

I’m a new grad nurse who is obsessed with the Pitt and was raised on Grey’s Anatomy so this was right up my alley! Brad and Delilah were so cute ! The will they won’t they and the blatant he fell first and hella hard was fun to read!

I appreciated the honesty about hospital politics and how hard it is for women in healthcare especially women of color! I loved the representation!!

AND THE SPIIIIIICCCCEEE !!! Eye contact 👀, dominant, the words of affirmation!!!! Wheeeeeewwwwhhh !!!

Delilah Harper is on the cusp of victory. After four very long, very hard years of medical school, the efforts of all that she's sacrificed are about to come to fruition on Match Day, where she'll find out the name and location she'll be spending the next decade-ish of her life truly becoming a neurosurgeon like she's always wanted. As a bonus, she'll also finally get away from her heated rival of the last four years, the hot-to-trot-and-unfortunately-academically-gifted Bradley Gallow - until he also manages to match at her #1 neurosurgery residency program, an unheard-of feat and a huge downer on what should be her day of triumph.

Determined to make the best of things - which includes working even harder than before so that she can get the attention (and hopefully the respect) of her neurosurgery attendings, Delilah is perturbed when Brad proposes a competition - dubbed "The Brain Games", Delilah and Brad will fight for the best cases and keep tabs to see who will finally get to assist during their first major surgery. But with the passion normally born from rivalry comes a different sort of passion, and the underlying heat and tension of the last four years may come to a head before either resident has the chance to say "time out".

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times - I love a medical fiction that is REALISTIC, and I'm about to give Nicole Alfrine an honorary degree because she clearly hit the books before writing a book about medical school and residency. This book captured the angst and jitters of Match Day and the anxious energy of graduation, moving, and starting fresh in a program on which all your hard work depends in a way that makes me wonder if the author herself is a doctor, and having just experienced my own Match Day and most of intern year, I felt like the experience was incredibly relatable and realistic to what a medical resident experiences (though I wish I was also at a program where I got so many weekends off!).

I especially love the attention to the realities of being a minority in medicine that were explored here, as well as the realities of privilege, class, nepotism, and the unseen factors that can make or break the career of the deserving - and undeserving - in medicine. It's a modern-day problem that, while better addressed than the past - still has a lot to answer for, and I hope the justice in fiction also finds justice in real life more often than not. On the brighter side, I love a medical heated rivalry, and making two brainiacs butt heads really worked for this haters-to-lovers romance - it even almost made me want to fall in love with neurosurgery (ALMOST). Congrats to the author on another delicious medical tale, and please let me know when the ED romance is coming, happy to be your consult call for that one!

i received a digital ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This is an Academic Rivals, forced proximity, he falls first, medical romance.

This book follows Bradley and Delilah as they start their first year as Neurosurgeon Residency. They were rivals in medical school so when they both get into the same residency program, their rivalry continues.

On the first day of the residency, he wants a truce but she doesn’t trust him because of their past. So instead of a truce, they start a game called the Brain Game, where they track who wins each day. This leads to some pretty fun cases that they have to work on. They are working for one of the best neurosurgeons in the country and it becomes obvious that he is favoring Brad. This causes lot of tension between them.

All their time together causes huge spikes in sexual tension between the two. Their constant arguing and completions and now their forced proximity to each other had really fanned the flames of their attraction. When they finally get together, I was so excited because i thought they would be so good together and I was right. He was such a caretaker and he started that before they got together but after they got together it was such much more and so much sweeter.

I could see the third act conflict coming, even though I didn’t completely know what it was, it was expected but I really loved the resolution. I thought it was interesting and just a great grand gesture.

There were a few things I didn’t like as well. In the beginning when they are doing their 2 weeks of residency prep, he starts dating/sleeping with a nurse. Then later he says (and we could see) that he has been in love with her since medical school. I just get the ick when they get into a different relationship even thought they know they have feelings for the other MC. Just why? Also, I don’t know why he kept the secrets he did. The 2 things he kept a secret just didn’t make sense, I don’t know why they would be secrets. There were other things he could have had as secrets that would have been more understandable.

I did enjoy the writing and the basic story, even if some of the plot points could use some finessing to feel more natural.

4.5 stars! Okay, so I requested this one on NetGalley as soon as I saw the line “perfect for fans of hospital dramas and spicy medical romance”—because I’m a huge Grey’s Anatomy fan. I’ve watched every season, every episode, and I’ve never read a medical romance before, so I was instantly intrigued.

I knew I’d like it… but I didn’t expect to love it this much. And whew—this book is spicy. Definitely one of the more explicit romances I’ve read in a while, but honestly? Good for Delilah and Brad. Their rivalry and tension have been building for years, and the payoff was so worth it.

I’d give it 4.5 stars because I do wish they had communicated better. Brad should’ve been more open with Delilah, but she also could’ve talked to him instead of jumping to conclusions.

But! Since I can’t do half stars—and I loved everything else—this is a solid 5 star read for me.

Two brilliant neurosurgeons, rivals since med school, both landing spots in the same residency program (which is basically unheard of)… this was the perfect enemies-to-lovers setup.

I also really enjoyed Delilah’s character. Being a woman in a male-dominated field is tough, especially as a woman of color. While I can’t relate to every part of her experience, I definitely understand what it’s like to not be taken seriously or to have people look for a male superior even when you’re the one in charge. It’s exhausting, but she handles it with so much strength, and I loved seeing her stand up for herself.

Brad surprised me in the best way. I can totally see how Delilah misjudges him at first. He comes off as a charming, hot-shot guy who can talk his way into anything. But underneath that, he’s thoughtful, supportive, and far more sensitive than he lets on.

They both show real growth and eventually learn how to communicate and truly listen to each other—but getting there is what really challenges their relationship.

Thank you to NetGalley, Nicole Alfrine, and Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group for the opportunity to read this eARC in exchange for my honest review!

Okay but THIS had me hooked the moment I read the description. 👀🧠

I’m a sucker for enemies-to-lovers, a slightly possessive MMC (but not toxic pls), and anything science/medical related - so this felt like it was written for me. 🫶

At the start, I was a bit confused ngl. The first few chapters felt slower than needed, like we could’ve gotten that info in a much shorter way. I was honestly a little worried the whole book would feel like that… but thankfully it picked up pretty quickly. 🙌

And when the MMC suggested a truce early on?? I panicked 😭 I thought “no way we’re losing the enemies part already.” But THANKFULLY Delilah said no and the rivalry stayed alive. 🔥

The hospital setting + their “Brain Games” competition was actually so fun to follow. Watching them fight over cases, try to outdo each other, and just constantly compete?? Elite dynamic.

Now let’s talk romance. 👀
They definitely do not hold back lol…
There are some detailed scenes, but a lot of them are shorter, which I personally didn’t mind.

What I really liked is that the story doesn’t just stop once they get together. We actually see them function as a couple - dealing with work, pressure, miscommunication (not overly childish 🙏), and real-life challenges. That always makes a romance feel more complete to me.

Bradly??? Sir???
Literally everything you’d want:
✔️ smart
✔️ confident
✔️ a little possessive
✔️ funny
✔️ secretly in love for YEARS

Like… who allowed this man to exist?

Delilah is also such a strong FMC - smart, hardworking, confident, and easy to root for.

I did predict a few things, but there were still moments that surprised me. 👀

My only wish? I would’ve LOVED Bradly’s POV. I feel like that would’ve taken this to another level.

Overall: a quick, bingeable read (I finished it in one day), with great tension, strong characters, and a fun medical setting.

Set in a fast-paced medical environment, this story is all about rivalry and ambition, which makes everything feel exciting and lively. The back-and-forth between the main characters is constantly entertaining, and honestly, some of the best banter I've read in a while. Their relationship has that enemies-to-lovers, enemies-with-benefits vibe, and it really works. The tension comes from their constant drive to outshine each other, but beneath all that, there's an undeniable chemistry that just keeps growing throughout the book.

The female protagonist is strong, sharp, and totally easy to root for. She knows her worth and isn’t afraid to stand her ground, which I really appreciated. The male lead has that confident, slightly cocky confidence that adds so much to their dynamic—especially as some deeper emotional layers start to surface.

One of the highlights of this book is the dialogue. The banter feels super natural, quick, and genuinely fun to read, making their interactions feel so real. The forced proximity adds even more fire to the mix, creating moments that are both tense and emotionally charged.

Sure, I would have loved a little more depth in some of the backstory and character growth, but honestly, it didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the story. The pacing kept me hooked, and I kept reading just to see how their relationship would change.

All in all, Brain Games is a solid romantic read packed with tension, great chemistry, compelling characters, and that competitive spark that really makes it stand out. If you're into workplace romances, snappy banter, and slow-burn tension with a satisfying payoff, this is definitely a book you’ll want to check out.

⭐️ Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Stars

“Brain Games” by Nicole Alfrine is a refreshing book with romance, humour and emotional depth.

Delilah is an incredibly competitive Medical School student who has a longstanding academic rivalry with fellow Medical School Student, Brad. I can only imagine the cut throat nature of studying to become a Doctor, and this book features so much drama associated with that environment. I don’t want to give away any of the storyline, but I will say that there is much more to the plot than I was expecting and I loved how the story unfolded.

“Brain Games” was a more consequential story than I was expecting. I was expecting a typical light enemies-to-lovers rom-com and I got so much more than just that! This book was highly entertaining and I connected with the characters so well that I found myself surprisingly emotional at times during the book. I was really cheering for Delilah and Brad.

Be prepared that there was a lot of spice (though that is my least favourite part of the book), and if you are looking for that, you will find it here.

I recommend “Brain Games” for anyone interested in a great enemies-to-lovers romance with substance.

I hadn’t read “Scars of Anatomy” by Nicole Alfrine before “Brain Games”, but I have already requested it from Libby through my local library!

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC!

Oh wow did I love this! Brain Games is incredibly Greys Anatomy coded, so if you like that show then you will 100% like this read. It combines a nice level of medicine with an rivals to lovers romance. The medicine part is actually well done and is focused on enough where it is believable and understandable but not the main focus of the story. The romance has so much chemistry and tension (also with a well done level of spice) and just incredibly well written overall. There are many bumps along the road, but nothing felt "too easy" and I really felt the stakes being weighed with every action. There is a point in the story where Delilah briefly sees two men and that didn't sit right with me, giving the plot lines but it was a short moment.
The characters themselves feel very real. Delilah seems exactly like someone I'd meet in my undergrad and the way her and Brad treat their education is so real. It's nice to see academic characters that still balance their social life, as there are some really good side characters that I was glad got a good amount of screen time. I also really liked how there was a touch on the aspect of Delilah being not only a woman in the medical field but also a woman of color since she was half Indian. It really brought her challenges to light, which I didn't know would be challenges for her, so I enjoyed that eye-opening topic.
I feel like my only wish was that we got to see more, I'd totally read another book following the Warner residents!! I really have nothing I didn't like, it's just a good read to pick up when you're bored!
All in all, I really enjoyed this fast paced, medical drama/romance!!

As a nurse...I am a sucker for a medical drama. Brain Games by Nicole Alfrine did not disappoint. If Emergency Bar Services (EBS) I a real bar please tell me where because I definitely need to go there and hang out.

Delilah wanted to be a neurosurgeon basically her whole life after witnessing her cousin battle a brain tumor. She was bullied during her childhood years in school for wanting to learn and be the best. During her collegiate years she continued to feel pressure to be the best, constantly competing with fellow students to be number one in her class. Her top competition...Bradley Gallow.

Brad's parents are both doctors. He has worked hard during his collegiate years to compete with Delilah, also wanting to pursue a career in neurosurgery. Both anticipate going to two of the top programs for neurosurgery during Match Day when they are shocked to learn they are accepted to the same program!!

The first day, Brad tries to end the competition and call a truce but Delilah just can't trust that he is telling the truth. She is so conditioned to think she has to fight for everything that she can't see what is right in front of her. Her inability to trust and let her guard down almost ruins everything. There were so many times in this book I wanted to just scream at her to relax and trust those around her. Right when I am about to give up on her, Alfrine throws in the twist of all twists! I did not see that one coming. This was the perfect enemies to lovers/workplace romance.

4.5, rounded up

Thank you, Webtoon Entertainment, for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review.

Hey, listen, I’m just a girl in her gap year, prepping and getting ready for MCAT life, and we all know I LOVE a medical romance book. Brain Games follows two medical interns, Delilah and Bradley, during their first year of neurosurgery residency. They’ve had a rivalry since medical school, which continues into the professional world. As their intern year begins, a truce is called, and the Brain Game (can’t you tell they love the neurostem?) is born. Reading this book was such a treat from a premedical perspective, especially since I’ve never had much exposure to neurosurgery beyond psych and my neurology course in undergrad.

Delilah and Bradley are incredibly well-crafted characters. Delilah is driven, fiercely ambitious, and shaped by years of competition, while Bradley’s dedication and skill make him a worthy rival. Their dynamic is intense, layered, and very real this isn’t your typical enemies-to-lovers story. Their interactions made me laugh, cheer, and yes, sometimes scream at them to just trust each other! Just when I thought I had their story figured out, the book threw in twists that completely surprised me.

Overall, reading Brain Games was such a fun experience. I fell in love with these characters and their journey, and it’s the kind of book that’s hard to put down. Perfect for anyone who loves a mix of medical life, workplace tension, and romance with heart.

Frankly, I couldn’t put this book down (which wasn’t difficult as I read it as a DRC). It was full of the cheesy, cliche rivalry that I was promised as soon as I read the books description. And I’m not upset. I actually loved the dynamic between the leads, and the friendships that laid everything out bare. And there was tension at practically every turn, except there lies the problem: this couple’s problems were solved too quickly. In a book that establishes that the two main characters as lacking words constantly, and saying so much while actually speaking few words, why were their conclusive conversations so very quick, providing every correct word learned through what should’ve been months of therapy?
It might be controversial, but I would have rather have an inconclusive “I know we’re at rock bottom, and digging up, but there’s no one I’d rather dig with,” than, “I know exactly what’s wrong with the way I communicate, and you do as well, and we’re going to fix it.” But then again, this is a romance. They should be allowed to be happy, and there’s no need for realism.
I would 100% recommend this to people who loved “You Between the Lines” by Katie Naymon… which I did. Maybe I’m just jaded that I liked this book so much for so many of the pages. This is definitely up there on my romance books I read because I was tired of literary fic and scientific writings. And, of course, this was my bread and butter as a Biology-Psychology Major Pre-Med student whose favorite discussion topic is the brain.

Rating: 4/5 stars
High-Stakes Neurosurgery with a Side of Slow-Burn Romance
Being in the medical field and loving dramas, I knew from the cover that I had to read Brain Games. The book follows first-year residents and competitors, Delilah and Bradly, as they strive to reach the top of their neurosurgery residency.

I loved the playful banter of the two main characters. Delilah is a strong female lead who refuses to be played down because of her sex or race. Bradly is a typical frat boy, attractive and flirtatious, never taking no for an answer. The story highlights the battles people of color and women face in being recognized for their achievements.

You can tell by the first few lines of dialogue between Delilah and Bradly that Delilah is the only one oblivious to the attraction they have for each other. The spice in the story is tasteful and well-placed, but it is not the main plot in the story. I personally loved that the book had more than just spice; it had a well-developed plot and backstory to support the relationship.

However, I felt the writing relied heavily on telling rather than showing. I would have loved to see more complexity in the writing, allowing for more subtext and interpretation.
Overall, the book is very cute and spunky. This is a great choice for those who love medical dramas and romance, with the added inclusiveness of minority characters.

This is a super fun and very quick read in the vein of grey's anatomy, general hospital, chicago med, any of the hospital soap opera type shows. I'm Delilah, and Brad are med school. Nemesis, who end up matching for the residency at the same hospital, then, the real fun starts. Delilah is bothered by Brad. He annoys her, she hates him. She's angry that they matched at the same hospital- the best hospital in the country for neurosurgery, which is both their specialties, well, here she meets, I find new friend.Ashlee ( who ayadore? And I hope we could see in a sequel, because she is fun and hilarious) Ashlee thinks they're together because they have so much tension. And maybe she's right?- there's a lot of super twisty turnies soap opera tape plots very Grey's Anatomy, but the characters are fun. The story is cute. It's a quick read makes you laugh out loud. Some of it's cheesy like a soap opera. But the heart of the story is there. The secondary cast of characters from the other residents to the parents. To the teaching doctors are great as well- I would totally recommend it, especially if you agree. As anatomy girly a very derek and meredith coded, if they started out hating each other, instead of I one night stand in a bar-

PS please give us an Ashlee book

Tropes:
🧠Enemies with benefits (kind of)
🧠Forced Proximity
🧠Light Possesive MMC
🧠Hospital Setting
🧠Banter
🧠Not Dual POV

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, enemies to lovers/rivals to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, I really loved the banter between Brad and Delilah, that being said...Delilah felt very self-centered when it came to almost every situation. When there was conflict, she blamed Brad for everything and didn't really take a lot of accountability, which I didn't love, just because they are both adults and obviously intelligent.

I really loved Brad, and it was very easy to root for him from the very beginning. When they were together, I rooted for them. I really like their dynamic together and how caring he was to her, and their little, secretive moments. I absolutely LOVE Grey's Anatomy, so I really enjoyed all the OR moments and the locker room scenes as well.

Move over, “Grey’s Anatomy”—there’s a new set of scalpels in town, and they’re sharper than Delilah Harper’s wit. After four grueling years of medical school (and probably enough caffeine to resuscitate a small herd of elephants), Delilah is ready to take on residency at a hospital so top-tier, even the vending machines have gold-plated snacks. But standing in her way is Bradly Gallow: gorgeous, infuriating, and smart enough to make a Mensa quiz cry for mercy.
Their rivalry is legendary. Forget blood pressure cuffs—these two only use them to measure the tension in the hallway. From dissecting brains to dissecting each other’s egos, Delilah and Bradly’s battles are the stuff of hospital folklore. And when they create the Brain Games—a competition for top cases and bragging rights—you’ll find yourself rooting for both and secretly hoping they scrub in together for a different kind of operation.
But as the surgical gloves come off and feelings get stitched into the mix, the hospital’s hottest competition gets a lot less sterile. Expect spicy banter, questionable medical puns, and enough romantic tension to make an EKG flatline.
If you like your medical dramas with a side of sass, a dash of steam, and a whole lot of heart (and brains), Delilah and Bradly’s story will have you paging Dr. Cupid STAT!

Review of e-ARC from NetGalley (Brain Games) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5/5)

This is my very first one, and I’m so glad I chose this book. I picked it because of the description and the cover. I’m a sucker for medical romances, and there aren’t many out there. When I saw it, I knew I had to apply.

This is a tension-filled, rivals to lovers medical romance that I devoured in one day. The writing is excellent, the story is engaging, and there’s just the right amount of spice. The medical setting feels authentic, from the residency struggles to the dynamics in the OR, and I loved how it explored what it’s like being a woman in a male-dominated field. The romance is grounded, swoon-worthy, and full of electric chemistry, with just the right amount of drama to keep you turning pages.

Delilah and Brad are smart, ambitious, and unapologetically driven, and the tension between them is perfect. The forced proximity makes for a fun, cute, and quick read that gives you butterflies and leaves you smiling. I already looked up the author and added her other medical romance to my TBR. I can’t wait to read it!

PS: Please make this as a series and write a book about the other residents!

Thank you to NetGalley and Wattpad Webtoon Book Group for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and shared honestly.

This was a fun and easy read! I enjoyed it because it was very Grey's coded, and it was fun to have both the romance plot ,and the woman in surgery plot. I will say, the plot twist at the end got me! I was not expecting it at all. I think that Delilah and Brad were a great fit for each other and I love the fact that he has loved her for so long. Also, I love that he did the investigation on Dr. Larson, but still told her that she knew she could have handled everything herself. Top tier man right there.

My biggest complaint with the book was that the writing was just a little too clunky for me. Some of the dialogue fell short for me, and it just was disjointed. The conversations or general interactions between characters were a little too robotic and unnatural. I think that Delilah was wonderful, but some of what she would say that was meant to be a joke just really fell flat.

Overall, the level of spice in this book was very tame, and could also be avoided, should you feel like you want to. If you want a light, easy read this is a great option to do so!

I was provided with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest reviews and thoughts on the book. Thank you again!

I usually love a book with a woman in STEM, but this one fell flat for me. This book follows Delilah and Bradly, two neurosurgery residents who met in med school and have had a continued rivalry through out all the years they’ve known each other. When it comes to their residency, they create the ‘Brain Games’ as a way to keep up their competitive streak.

I enjoyed the first half of this book, but the second half is where it kind of fell flat for me. Part of Delilah’s character was that she wasn’t very trusting and always thought the worst of a situation, which was fine at first because her character needed room to grow. But she didn’t seem to evolve from that and it caused a lot of conflict between her and Bradly throughout the book.

Honestly, I just don’t think this book was for me. Miscommunication is one of my least-favorite tropes, and there seemed to be a lot of it in there. I did think that the epilogue was really cute and showed that they had matured as people and as a couple.

Some tropes in this book:
* Rivals-to-lovers
* Forced proximity
* Friends-with-benefits
* Miscommunication

Thank you to Netgalley, Wattpad books, and Nicole Alfrine for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This had me hooked from the premise alone — enemies to lovers + medical setting + competitive tension?? say less.
The beginning was a little slow for me and took a minute to get into, but once it picked up, I was locked in. The hospital setting and their “Brain Games” competition made the dynamic so fun — constantly trying to outdo each other, arguing over cases, that tension?? so good.
I was briefly scared the rivalry would disappear early on, but thankfully it sticks around and keeps that enemies energy alive.
Bradly… yeah. He’s the moment.
Smart, confident, a little possessive (but in a good way), and completely gone for her. The kind of MMC who’s been in it longer than he lets on.
Delilah holds her own just as much — driven, capable, and easy to root for.
I also really liked that the story doesn’t just end when they get together. You actually see them navigate being together, with real-life pressure and communication that felt mature.
I did see a couple things coming, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience. My only wish? More of his POV — it would’ve made it even stronger.
overall: a fun, fast-paced medical romance with great tension, strong leads, and a dynamic that keeps you turning pages 🤍

3.8 stars

•forced proximity
•enemies to lovers
•he falls first
•he’s wealthy
•grumpy x sunshine
•medical romance
•they are both jealous

I absolutely enjoyed the banter between Brad and Harper throughout the entire book. I also enjoyed the friendships and connections that both main characters made. I feel like this book was taken directly out of a Shonda Rimes’ tv show. However, something is missing. A spark, a flame… something to make this book even more memorable.

I did enjoy reading but I just wish it had something to make me want to reread the book. More drama, more spice, more OR scenes.. more more more.

I feel as if Mateo and the blonde nurse were written in to give that extra spice or more edge but they both seemed like an afterthought. We never really saw either of those characters after Mateo stood Delilah up.

I also wanted more conflict between Brad and Dr. Larson.. the anger between them was more like a simmer than a full on fire. I also wished I could have heard moreabout Dr. Larson through Brad’s mother.

In conclusion, it’s a good book but it just left me wanting more.

Thank you so much to Nicole Alfrine, NetGalley and Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group for an ARC of Brain Games. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have read and reviewed this book!

Hot damn! I absolutely devoured this book. Talk about a page turner! Brain games is the perfect amount of romance & suspense that will keep you up till 3am wanting to know what happens. If you work in healthcare or like medical dramas add this to your TBR pronto!

Alfrine just has that *magical* writing style. She will suck you in and make you feel like you know all her characters. As a reader, that’s one of my most favorite things! Catch me at EBS hanging with the crew. You want yearning??? Brad, our MMC, will give you a nice lesson on that.

Delilah was an emotionally complex FMC. For being a bad ass Neurosurgeon resident, some of her thinking outside of work, was not so bad ass lol. But, we all have our moments & opportunities for character growth.

Pick this book up for a good time. Let’s hope there’s a sequel coming our way!! Ashlee???

P.S. F doctor you know who. Iykyk and if you don’t you better read and find out!!

An easy single POV read that reminded me a lot of Grey's Anatomy, with MCs that are both new resident neurosurgeons that previously competed for top of their class together before ending up at the same hospital for residency. This is a follow-up to the author's first book, but I did not read that one first and do not think it would be necessary (though might make this one a little more enjoyable, as the couple from book one makes a few cameos). The setting was fun, lots of hospital drama. I didn't feel particularly connected with the FMC (also there's just something about an adult woman calling her parents "momma" and "daddy" that weirds me out a little), but I still enjoyed following her as she tried to make her way in a new and highly competitive career while also juggling a complicated new romance. This gave enemies to lovers vibes, which I guess is sort of true, except all of the "enemy" parts seemed to be entirely made up in her head. The pacing was good throughout, making this overall a quick read. Open-door, mild-medium spice. 3.5 rounded up.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.

If you love medical shows like Grey's Anatomy or Chicago Med, then you need to add this book to your TBR! This was my first read by Nicole Alfrine and also my first medical romance, and I was completely hooked from chapter one. Considering how obsessed I am with medical shows, I’m honestly surprised it took me this long to pick up a medical romance; but I’m so glad this was my first. Huge thank you to NetGalley for approving me to read this ARC because it easily became a 5-star read ⭐️

The tension between rivals Brad and Delilah was EVERYTHING. The chemistry, the banter, the push and pull… I ate it up. And don’t even get me started on Brad falling first and falling HARD. Ugh, I loved it so much.

At first, Brad definitely gives off major fuck boy energy, but underneath all of that, he’s actually incredibly caring and protective of the people he loves. Watching those layers slowly unravel made me love his character even more.

The only thing that frustrated me was how many secrets Brad kept from Delilah, especially after she gave him the chance to come clean. That added so much angst and tension to the story though, and had me fully invested until the very end.

Holy-Cow, this book gives me Grey's Anatomy vibes but with more diversity. I couldn't put this book down. I literally had to take it with me everywhere because I wanted to find out what happened next.

The characters are interesting and you continue to learn more about them. They're not so annoying as they bumble through to their HEA -- they have some rationality and accountability.

Even when the twists seem obvious, Nicole keeps you wondering and then lays the reveal on you! I like how the drama isn't all about tearing the couple apart, but how can they come together.

I could have done with more truth-telling from Bradly near the end when he explains why he chose the medical schools that he did. But my dislike for that short-change couldn't overshadow what I good time I had reading this book. I really, really hope we see more about them and even a story for Ashlee, Patrick and Jack.

3/5 for spicy

I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy through NetGally in exchange for my honest review -- and honestly, you should read this book as soon as it comes out.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC of Brain Games by Nicole Alfrine!!

I loved Brain Games so much more than I expected!! It was an engaging enemies to lovers story that I didn’t want to put down. There was a lot of miscommunication between the main characters, which is one of my favorite tropes in romance books, but may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

This book follows Delilah and Bradley, rival neurosurgeons, in their residency who have been enemies since medical school. As they now work together in the same hospital they decide to create a competition called “Brain Games” between the two of them in order to figure out who is the better resident in the hospital. As they compete against each other they begin to grow closer and realize they may not be enemies after all.

Brain Games may be one of my favorite books of all time!! It was one of those books where I was truly sad when it ended. I definitely would reread this again someday and want to read everything from this author!

The Good: This is a newer sub-genre of romance that I haven't seen much from yet (medical). I think that the characters were pretty fun. I wanted them to get together and stay together, plus there was enough steam to show they are compatible in many ways! Lots of a great twists, too.

The Meh: I think calling the book "Brain Games" was a bit much. The concept in the book felt more like an afterthought and kind of overcomplicated their relationship without a real pay-off? It seemed to go on in the background but neither of them really had any stakes and it didn't really seem like a motivator. At the same time, the FMC seemed really pissed about actions in relation to it without laying the groundwork for it. Just didn't seem relevant to how she acted in her overall drama. FMC may have been a touch overdramatic, too.

The Verdict: I'd say this book is good with some fun reveals, but overall it fell a little flat for me. I think this author has talent and I'd just like to see it be a little tighter.

This has been the only book recently that I have been able to finish, and thus - 5 stars. Was it perfect? No. Was it enjoyable enough to get me out of my reading slump (hopefully)? Yes. Both of the main characters are neurosurgeon interns (Hello, Greys Anatomy), that went to the same medical school together, and somehow managed to land at the same residency program that is highly competitive.

Now, is it a little creepy that Brad (hate the name by the way) copied Delilah's residency choices so that he could hopefully get to be with her? Yes, very creepy, especially because she thought they hated each other, didn't want anything to do with him, and had no prior discussion about her program choices with him. If that happens to anyone in real life, run, girl....

Dr.Larson being Brad's actual father was really not surprising. Most of the book was very predictable, TBH. But I enjoyed going on this journey with them. (Looking past all of the stereotypical romance book red flags).

Thank you NetGalley for the eARC.
