I read 40 pages and put it down. I feel like the writing lacks fluency and doesn’t vary in structure or technique. Such a shame tbh. I saw a vid of it on TikTok and thought it might be interesting. It might have been a really great story but I couldn’t focus on it because of the writing style.

I wasn’t surprised when I looked up the author and saw that English isn’t her first language, or that she’s already working on another novel. This is the problem with indie writers; they’re so obsessed with getting it done that they don’t stop to care about the quality of their work.

From what I had read from the reviews, the author is still young and not a native English speaker so I tried my hardest to take that into consideration. To sum up, there was so much going on yet it somehow managed to be boring. The romance felt too instant and fast paced despite it clearly being an enemies to lovers of sort. The first 100 pages was confusing and it’s clear the author didn’t care to explain anything so they could move on to “better” parts of the story. I tried. I really did. But if you are someone who values good writing, don’t bother with this. There’s obviously room for improvement and I hope the author takes the time to care about writing more than publishing when they write their next book, if they even get the chance.

This book was beautiful! Kayra’s writing is so poetic and has the right amount of quotes. I loved how every little detail has a meaning, that relates to the characters. So, if you love complex characters with a traumatic past and the found family trope, this book might be something to look forward to. I can’t wait for it to be published officially. (Ps: I was sobbing by the end of this book - thanks Kayra I guess)

I had never rated a book one star before this one. I guess this is what I get for giving indie authors a chance. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read some amazing books that were originally self published but this isn’t one.

I wanted to read the book because of a video I saw online and I have to say I expected more. Not everything is bad, there are some good things, like chapter 1 I thought it was a good enough of a hook, and the consistency throughout the story, it makes sense, it’s important to mention because it could be a nice story. Perhaps the relationship between the two main characters gets ambiguous too early? and though they have a proper personal development, I think the constant back and forth between « i care about him/her » and « I don’t » is too persistent and not constructive, especially together they don’t have time to build a real relationship. If they don’t trust each other, is it really love?
Now, so many words are repeated way too much and sometimes on the same page making it even harder to read. I get that English is not the author’s mother tongue though it really needs improvement for a published book, the use of personal pronouns in the biggest part. The writing is simple and it’s not wrong but it could be evolved. Also at some points it was confusing reading the dialogs because in the same paragraph three characters were speaking and some other times there were three paragraphs for one speaking character, it would make sense if the protagonist had a lot to say and that the author didn’t want it do be hard to digest for the reader but it wasn’t the case and at those moments the description was lacking, it wasn’t pleasant to read.
It’s not very important to notice but there are no date all the way to a little past the middle and suddenly there is, because the reader doesn’t know which date it is at the beginning I didn’t think it was pertinent but I get that is can be subjective.
There is a serious problem which is the tenses: it variates from present to past without reason because there’s no flashback. Some words are REALLY overused: « soft ». Last thing I’ll say is the description of the fighting scenes feel jerky, it’s hard to decipher what’s actually happening and some things are questioning, is it really possible to do certains things with certain broken bones?
I don’t mean for the author to take any of this personally, writing is hard but practice makes perfect they say. Just trying to giving a constructive comment here.

How this was able to be published is beyond me.

I saw a video saying this book is like powerless and shatter me when it’s not at all? The only similarity I saw was the names of these two side characters
N-(something) and Koji, which reminds me of Nazeera and Kenji—only the names. I fear we’ve lost the meaning of the word “yearn” as well. I read the other reviews that say the writing is even better than the story when that’s far far from being the truth. I only got it bc I saw it was the authors birthday and so I thought “why not” but it wasn’t for me AT ALL.

Also the way it made no sense that this main character kept switching between being a “nobody” and then suddenly being this super powerful well known soldier was so confusing to me.

At first I needed some time to get into the story and the timeline suddenly speeds up in a way that felt a bit too fast. But from the moment Victoria comes into contact with Elijah the story starts to flow naturally and you end up reading it in one sitting. It is impressive that someone my age managed to write something with this much depth and emotion. The characters feel real the pacing finds its rhythm and the ending makes the whole journey worth it.

Impressive to see someone publish a first novel at just sixteen. The writer shows a sharp eye for quotes that stay with you and characters that feel lived in. The beginning asks a bit of patience but once you push through the story starts to flow in a natural steady way. It’s a debut that shows real potential and a voice worth following.

I saw this on TikTok and got really interested but was severely disappointed. I understand many young people take the route of self publishing because they believe trad is a scam or whatever but this is exactly why traditional publishing exists.

Everyone thinks they can write a book. Everyone thinks their writing is amazing and in no need of editing.

I didn’t know it was self published when I picked it up but instantly knew it hadn’t gone through proper editing within the first page.

The writing felt really awkward and made me cringe (to be honest). It all felt so fast paced and confusing, not because I couldn’t understand what was going on but because I couldn’t understand why this was going on in the first place.

There isn’t too much description on exactly why this world is the way it is. It’s a dystopian book yet I don’t feel the government system was properly explained. The tropes were described as enemies to lovers when it was clear who the love interest was the moment he was introduced. (Also, who gets into a weirdly seductive knife/gun fight with someone they hate? Wouldn’t they rather push each other away than play around?)

It felt all too much like a badly written Wattpad story. I just felt like it lacked structure of any kind.

It was very difficult to get through it because of the writing. Maybe it’s because I’m a fluent English speaker so I cringe at off-putting writing. I couldn’t concentrate on anything else except for all the errors.

There’s definitely room for improvement (lots of it) and yeah, it just wasn’t the book for me but it seems, based off the reviews, that I’m not the only one.

I really liked this book! I genuinely believe that Kayra, you are going places. The way you write is so beautiful and I enjoyed reading every bit of it.
I will be honest, there is a plot hole where Claire stabs Elijah and then it isn’t addressed again. Victoria walks in and acknowledges there is blood but nothing else happens to his wound when realistically he would have bled out and died unless attended to.
Please do tell me if i’ve just misread/misunderstood it!
You are a very young author and you should be so proud of yourself, not many teenagers can say they have a published book! Overall, I love this book, definitely recommend!

I bought this because I saw it on TikTok, and because it's her birthday. And I loved it. I finished it in one day. I loved her characters, they were complex, different. I do think the time jump had quite a big impact on the story, because of that, we missed some moments that were important, but I heard she is working on a novel for that. There were such amazing quotes. I can't believe she wrote it at 16, and that while her first language is not English.

I really enjoyed this story — it’s incredibly well written and kept me hooked from the very beginning. The characters feel vivid and believable, and their development made me genuinely care about what would happen next.
The plot moves at a perfect pace: exciting when it needs to be, but also thoughtful in the quieter moments. I especially liked the way the author builds tension and creates an atmosphere that pulls you right into the world of the story.

I enjoyed this book for its story but even more for the way it is written. The author lets you experience the same moment through two different characters and that perspective shift is powerful. It gives the story depth without forcing it and it kept me close to every scene. For a young writer this is impressive work and it shows a natural sense of timing and voice. I finished the book with the feeling that the form made the story even stronger and that is what stayed with me.

I loved the book. I read the first half in one sitting and stopt cause I needed to sleep. I hate the ending (not really) I really wanted the to have a happy life but I loved the open end / cliffhanger. I love the fact that it was written by someone who didn’t have English as their first language.

Overall I really enjoyed the book and love the characters (especially Victoria)
