The Ghost's Gambit

Rate this book
After the raid on his garrison, the Enforcer is on the hunt-and he won't stop until the Wraiths hang from the gallows. Rowan, Tahira, and Akaran are caught in the Enforcer's merciless pursuit and forced to flee across the wilderness in their struggle to stay one step ahead of this cutthroat soldier.

As new leaders of an underground rebellion, Rowan and Tahira fight to keep the resistance alive. Yet the cost of staying hidden grows heavier as the Enforcer and his soldiers terrorize Arjun. The body count rises, and the guilt sharpens with each brutal execution. But when the Enforcer threatens the very home they've sworn to protect, Rowan and Tahira must confront a painful truth-they may not have the power to stop him.

Meanwhile, Akaran and Marah stake their lives on a dangerous mission to undermine the Enforcer's iron grip on their homeland. In their quest, they stumble upon a dark secret that could change everything, but only if they escape the enemy's snare alive.

As tensions among the Wraiths mount, and with the weight of an oppressed kingdom on their shoulders, Rowan, Tahira, and Akaran will have to decide what they're willing to sacrifice for their people-and for each other.

The Ghost's Gambit is a gripping, pulse-pounding tale of rebellion, loyalty, and the high cost of defying a brutal empire.

The Ghost's Gambit begins immediately after the thrilling climax of The Wraiths of Arjun, dropping the reader right into the action of the fledgling rebellion against the Mestrian Empire. Rowan, Akaran, and Tahira Bestgirl have their work cut out for them, and they absolutely shine in the midst of some harrowing and dire circumstances.

Tahira does so well in this story, being every bit the wholesome and spunky girl she's always been, while also honing her Conjuring powers in a way that honors her personal convictions and loyalty to Rowan. I'd even go so far as to say she's the one keeping Team Wraiths together. Always and forever #TeamTahira

Akaran and Marah are likewise at their very best. Their antics and mischief were among the most entertaining scenes in this story, and the secrets they uncover are nothing short of jaw-dropping. I have to admit the pugilist brute has finally grown on me.

The addition of the Enforcer's POV provides a dynamic (and terrifying) glimpse into this villain's obsessive search for the Wraiths and his determination to exterminate any sign of hope in Shandria. Anson wields the commanding presence of Darth Vader and the scheming wiles of Grand Admiral Thrawn, a lethal combination for a villain you will surely love to hate.

Kegan's POV brings a sobering yet necessary perspective to the story, and I believe his struggles are handled with both tactful realism and gleaming hope. I dare say we need more perspectives like his in fiction to encourage readers that they too can chase the light.

Can't wait for Book 4!

Still water, steady heart.

I had to keep telling myself this as I was reading this beautifully written third installment. We get so much action, angst, love, yearning, and Stephanie keeps me hooked with each chapter. This one took me longer to read simply because I know it will be a while before I know what happens. I never thought I would love Akaran as much as Rowan...but let me tell you it is a very close race. Marah and Tahira are the perfect FMC and each have their own way of dealing with the Wraiths. I have also NEVER wanted to seriously punch a villain as much as I do Anson. UGH THIS GUY. Seriously, go look at the art work and tell me that he isn't punchable??

Without spoiling anything, the supporting characters are really growing on me as well. The mental struggle that one of them is going through is written phenomenally. The tug-o-war that is going on inside this character's head is easily one of the best written story arcs.

The action is ramping up in this one and I cannot wait to see where we end up. Will someone make a special appearance in Arjun at the right time? Will a certain someone's letter reach the intended recipient and have an outcome favorable for Arjun? Will the Enforcer ever shut up? Will the blue-eyed devils FINALLY get what they deserve?

I think this maybe my favorite of the series so far.

I loved the first book. I loved the second even more. And this third installment of the epic Iron Kingdom series did not disappoint! The high stakes had me literally on the edge of my seat, the romance had me swooning, and the worldbuilding and character development just keep getting better with every book.

The Wraiths can’t turn back now, and their world stands on the edge of a knife. I cried, I white-knuckled my way through every twist, and I closed the book both breathless and desperate for more. With new magic, fascinating creatures, and unforgettable characters, Ghost’s Gambit is a must-read for fantasy lovers everywhere.

The Ghost’s Gambit, the third installment in Stephanie Cotta's Iron Kingdom series, sweeps readers back into the dark, perilous world of the Iron Kingdom, where rebellion burns quietly under the thumb of a brutal empire. The story picks up in the midst of chaos, rebels fleeing through snow, soldiers in pursuit, loyalties torn to pieces. Author Stephanie Cotta crafts a world that is both cruel and tender, filled with haunted warriors, hidden magic, and fragile hope. The narrative follows a cast of complex characters, Wraiths, Conjurers, and outlaws, each wrestling with their own ghosts as they defy a king who seeks to crush them. It’s a tale of defiance, sacrifice, and the flickering light that refuses to die in the shadow of tyranny.

Cotta’s writing moves with fierce rhythm, sometimes sharp as steel, other times soft as snowfall. Her descriptions pull you straight into the fight, the clang of metal, the sting of regret, the ache of loss. What struck me most wasn’t just the action, though it’s thrilling, but the intimacy of the quiet moments in between. When Rowan bleeds for his brother, or Tahira whispers spells through tears, or Akaran faces the cost of vengeance, it hits hard. The book isn’t afraid to show how grief shapes courage, or how love can bloom even when surrounded by blood and ruin. I found myself caring deeply for these characters, even when they stumbled, even when they broke.

The pace shifts swiftly, cutting one moment and lingering the next. There are scenes where the prose leans into drama, yet I couldn’t fault it because it felt honest to the pain the story carries. The dialogue has a rawness that fits the world’s brutality, and while the lore is dense, it rewards you for paying attention. What really lingered with me was the emotional weight beneath the battles. This isn’t just a fantasy about swords and sorcery; it’s about forgiveness, loyalty, and the ghosts we carry when the fight is done.

The Ghost’s Gambit is a story that grips you and doesn’t let go, yet somehow leaves a quiet warmth behind. I’d recommend it to readers who crave epic fantasy with heart, especially those who love stories like Throne of Glass or Mistborn but want something cleaner in tone and more focused on the ties between family and faith. It’s dark, yes, but not hopeless. If you like your fantasy with both grit and grace, this book is worth every page.

The Wraiths are back, and nothing is going to stop them from holding to what they know is right.

This is the third installment in the series, and it packs a punch. While the plot has been mounting from one book to the next, this one not only steps up but seems to make the growth even richer. The very first page already dives straight into tension, action, and emotions pure as the Enforcer wraps up a bloody attack and lets his callous attitude hit with full force. The Wraiths slide right in with the atmosphere that always accompanies their constant struggle: a bit of win but not without a toll. And this sets the stage wonderfully for the rest of the read.

The author has woven a very intricate world with tons of depth. While the Enforcer is easy to dislike and cruel, the reader gets a little insight, this time, into some of his reasoning...which simply makes the story that much better. We have Tahira shining more and more as she continues to refine her skills but manages to keep the same touching qualities which make her so enjoyable to root for. Her relationship with Rowan also isn't forgotten to add a touch of romance without overpowering the main theme as their connection deepens. But then, the battle against the Enforcer is never to be taken lightly, which keeps everyone on their toes. The side characters have also earned their places in the spotlight and continue to round off the group with grit, heart, and necessary edge.

The pacing, as in the other books, remains high the entire way through as the Enforcer's actions grow more and more deadly and threatening. There are moments to cheer and painful ones to cut the heart. All along the world never looses richness and keeps the reader in the pages. It's definitely a series fantasy fans will want to take a peek at.
