Daryl Greer isn’t a bodyguard. He’s Hercules Security’s “odd-job” specialist, as wild and dangerous, as he is competent. Fiercely independent, he resents his older brother Matthew’s view that he spends his life “playing G.I. Joe”. When he’s sent to rescue a kidnapped scientist, Dr. Emerson Winfield, from a terrorist organization, Daryl finds himself attracted to the snarky, outspoken man even though Emerson is the kind of rich, successful person Matthew claims could never be interested in a hick like Daryl.
For his part, Emerson doesn’t care about Daryl’s lack of polish; he’s more interested in the incredible chemistry between them. He sets out to prove to Daryl that they can make a relationship work despite their differences. But Daryl’s defensiveness about his career drives a wedge between them -- and if he doesn’t find a way to deal with his issues, Daryl might lose Emerson forever.

Given she has the survival skills of a gnat, she’s relying on Arionrhod to help her survive the zombie apocalypse.
This is my favourite so far, featuring street smart but not academically smart Daryl, a potential Nobel Prize winning scientist and a whole bunch of dodgy terrorists.
It's also the sexiest so far in the series with the two men not only getting down and dirty in the Amazonian jungle but also continuing their escapades once they got back from the rescue mission.
They have insane chemistry and there wasn't a whole lot of angst to make the plot last longer. Each man has his hang ups but together they just work.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
I've been looking forward to this because I think Herc's Merc's is proving to be a really enjoyable series of easy read novellas that are great to pick up when you need something that's not too intense or deep but still has enough of an interesting plot to keep your focus. Up to now the hero's of the books have been actual bodyguards, hired to do exactly that; guard their respective clients from whatever danger they're facing, but this one is centered around Daryl "D-Day" Greer, a mercenary for hire who Cade 'Herc' Thornton, owner of Hercules Security, calls in when he needs help with more dangerous, military style ops and missions.
We met him fleetingly at the end of the last novella and even in the very short time he was on page, it was obvious he was going to be quite a character. A bit of a loose cannon he's the type of guy who jumps in first, then asks questions later. A real action man, who will put himself in the line of fire because he has no fear, but his loyalty is unquestionable. So he's the perfect choice to send in, when Herc is asked to help rescue an important scientist who's been kidnapped by a group of terrorists. What he isn't expecting to find is the good looking but exasperating man, who distracts him and pushes his buttons when they have to make a dash through jungle territory to freedom. Not a good thing when he needs all his wits to get them to safety!
As a couple Daryl and Emerson are like chalk and cheese, but boy does the sexual tension flow. I think this is probably one of the hottest books that I've read by Ari Mckay. There's some fairly steamy scenes between them that start not long after Daryl single handedly extracts the attractive, feisty scientist from under the noses of the bad guys. Which admittedly did make me smile when they end up having a bit of nooky in the midst of their mad dash...but a case of good old fashioned lust won't be denied! LOL...
‘Bloody but Unbowed’ is the third installment in Ari McKay’s ‘Herc’s Mercs’ series. I was particularly excited about this book, because Daryl had caught my attention the instant he appeared on the pages, and I thought he’d give me a really good story. It’s nice to know my ability to judge hasn’t failed me. *grins*
Daryl is a redneck with a traumatic childhood. However, he’s also Cade’s very best extraction guy at Hercules Securities. Daryl plays up his southern drawl, slow speech, and enjoys having people think he’s not very smart. On the contrary, Daryl is very smart, although his older brother seems to feel Daryl is a waste of existence.
Emerson is a genius scientist who comes from a family who are more concerned about contributing to the world than social position and prestige. Unusual, indeed, for a wealthy family in the South. Daryl has a tough time believing Emerson really wants to be seen with him in public.
I was right in assuming that this third book would be smoking hot, and from the sexy frottage scene at the beginning, right through to the mild BDSM at the end…well, the author definitely found her groove in Daryl and Emerson’s book. I really enjoyed watching their love story come together, and nothing made me happier than to see a certain “someone” get his comeuppance! There is some emotional drama, and physical too, but it doesn't overshadow the story of these two men and the love they find, together.
Great job, Ari! Thank you so much, and I hope there’ll be more in this series.

When Hercules Security needs an unusual job done, there is only one man they consider. Darryl Greer is not really a body guard. He is more a specialist in odd jobs. He is his own man and listens to very few and especially not his brother who think he should grow up and stop playing G.I. Joe. When he sent to rescue scientist Emerson Winfield from a terrorist organization, Darryl finds himself attracted. But the snarky man is also rich and successful, a man his brother has told him could never be interested in him. Emerson is interested and the two begin a relationship that is soon threatened by Darryl’s career and his inability to let Emerson in all the way.
Watching these two fall for each other was a joy to read. Emerson and Darryl were opposites in so many ways, each with their own set of skills. Their chemistry when together was off the charts. They had something special and Emerson knew just how to get Darryl to realize it. The road to true love is rocky and these two had more than their share. The ending is beautiful and will leave you smiling.
Bloody But Unbowed by Ari McKay hits the spot – over and over again.
From jumping out of low-flying planes to riding on top of moving trucks with nuclear bombs inside, Bloody But Unbowed shifts effortlessly back and forth from high-octane action to high-octane sex.
Delivering just the right balance of character building, conflict, setting details, and overall depth, this story is complete and satisfying at only approximately 140 pages.
Meridian Astrodynamics, is of the fastest growing tech firms in Raleigh. When one of their valuable American scientist gets kidnapped by a violent terrorist group with an anti-technology communist agenda, they reach out to Hercules Securities for help. Thankfully, Hercules Securities has just the right man for the extraction job: Daryl “D-Day” Greer, a not-so honorably discharged military expert who knows how to kill, shoot from grenade launchers, and play a hot game of poker.
Bloody But Unbowed is not the typical homoerotic novella. The characters don’t speak or act like women, albeit in male bodies. There’s no extreme of an overly masculine partner with an overly feminine one. The realistic erotic scenes are appreciated with their convincing foreplay, healthy communication of needs and desires, and condom use. The main characters Daryl “D-Day” Greer, the best black-ops man Hercules Securities has and Dr. Emerson Winfield, a Nobel Peace Prize worthy scientist are both independent, strong-willed, witty, and devoted to their jobs and the fulfillment their careers bring to their respective lives.
After the story’s climax, there’s a peculiar exchange between Mathew, Daryl’s older brother and Daryl’s lover, Emerson. The conversation is a curious one as Matthew reveals secrets and vulnerabilities to Emerson; a man that from our perspective, Matthew has never previously met. Yet, he shared secrets that he hasn’t shared with his own brother, whom we know he cares about yet struggles to connect with.
The overdone verbalizations of love and caring that take place in this scene are unnecessary. The author has already done a powerful job of ensuring we know who cares for whom and how much. The contrived conversation pulls downs the rock-solid dialog and realness of the story that benefited the previous pages. Some of this dialog although needless, are likely to satisfy those readers who need to actually hear the characters say how they feel even though the author flawlessly lets their character’s actions speak loud, clear, and on-point with their respective personalities.
Despite this head-scratcher, Bloody But Unbowed is solid in those places where it matters the most. The offbeat scene between Matthew and Emerson serves as the catalyst for the post-breakup reunion between Daryl and Emerson. These two men have an opposites-attract chemistry that have you rooting for them from the first page to the last. By the time you get to the end of this short novel, there’s a meaningful ending that feels just right, but you can’t help but immediately shoot back to the previous pages to re-enjoy some of your favorite, sizzling parts.
Keep in mind that Bloody But Unbowed has some rough language and violence. Enemies are killed and people get shot. Bones are broken. Daryl and Emerson also “talk dirty” to each other during their sexual encounters that usually include the use of adult bedroom toys. This isn’t to say that the book is all rough and tough. There are sincere moments of tenderness and love harmonized with the aforementioned that really make this story and the writing special.
This book reads like a romantic action-adventure film with all the right elements to keep you turning the page. Daryl and Emerson are the type of characters with the type of relationship that you want more of. Although this is their only story thus far, the author has given us the gift of a full line of enticing stories of bodyguards, mercenaries, and para-military based romances in their contemporary Herc’s Mercs Series.
Daryl "D-Day" Greer is the odd job specialist for Hercules Security. He's asked to infiltrate a foreign country and extract an American scientist that's been kidnapped by an extremist group. He doesn't like authority and likes working alone. He has a prickly relationship with his older brother Matthew due to Matthew bossing him around and making him feel less than.
Dr Emerson Winfield is in a foreign country working on an experiment that's time sensitive. His kidnapping has put a stop to his experiment and he's not happy about it at all. He's also snarky as hell.
Sparks are flying from the moment Daryl and Emerson meet. Both are alpha men and don't take any crap from anyone. Running from terrorists through the forest, snarking at each other and neither can deny the attraction. Emerson doesn't care that Daryl is an "uneducated redneck" and Daryl can't believe that Emerson would really be attracted to him. It doesn't take long at all for them to stop snarking long enough to get off together and decide that they want more. Slowly going from friends with benefits to lovers is smooth sailing until Daryl gets back from a top secret mission and Emerson realizes Daryl hasn't been completely honest. Then the sparks are flying in a completely bad way. Getting help to forgive and make up comes from a surprising person.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The chemistry between Daryl and Emerson is off the charts and the sex is hot. These two are complete opposites and couldn't be more perfect for each other. Only complaint: the rescue could've been more thoroughly played out. Otherwise excellent book. Definitely recommend this book.
4.5 stars. A great start when the two meet and the remarks start up between them. Snarky banter in a danger zone but they work it lol. A pretty crummy joke and some hot got kinky sexy scenes for them setting things smokin. I loved the explosive drama towards the ending with DDay telling half truths, Emerson definitely was happy. A fast telling story with some hot chemistry included. Another one of the authors books I love reading.
Daryl was sent in to rescue a scientist from an terrorist group.. he'd loved the adrenaline in cases he worked on. Emerson was prisoner and awaited his fate, until....
Okay, I hated Daryl's brother and you don't even get to meet him until the end. Maybe they should call CPS on him if he's telling his kids that no one decent will ever love them unless they behave in a manner HE finds appropriate. He said he wasn't abusive like his dad. Um. Dude, you never hit anyone but you are emotionally abusive big-time and I never got the impression he REALLY got it.
So call me a sucker for a wounded (emotionally if not ALWAYS physically although Daryl did a good job of that) and a smart-mouthed brainiac. I could see both side when the drama came up but on the whole, I enjoyed it and it kept me going. It's not deep literature but it was a pleasant read.
These two men... what word to better describe them? Stubborn? Bullheaded? Pigheaded? Sometimes infuriating? They're all that, and yet together they're so completely perfect! And reading about Daryl and Emerson snarking and bitching at each other is highly funny! The steamy parts are super steamy and the action parts are super entertaining, too!
This series is really good. I loved that Daryl got his own story. He needed someone who got him and all his quirks. Even when he messed up. Good suspense. Nothing like terrorists and a rescue plus almost dying a few times to get your blood going. :) Ready to see who's next.
This story has everything I like about a pleasure read. Its a well written book that can be enjoyed quickly. I liked this one so much, I'm going to check out some of the others in the series.
Actually, it's more 2,5 stars compare to some of the books that I gave 3; but it was so much better than the first two. The best one in the series so far, for sure.
This is my first time reading the Herc’s Mercs series by Ari Mckay. I was not lost, but I do want to go back and read what I missed. I loved Bloody and Unbowed. Daryl or D-Day as the team call him, he is usually a pretty laid back kind of guy. But when he gets competitive with his older brother Matthew his personality changes and he becomes on edge and wanting to prove he is the better brother. He is all set to rescue some rich scientist. Annoying yes but he can do the job. Then he meets Emerson Winfield. The man is stunning and almost takes Daryl’s breath away. Emerson is funny, kind and to Daryl’s surprise pretty useful both in and out of bed. I liked watching these two make a connection and fall in love in the most unlikely of places. I also like how Ms. Mckay really wove a compelling story that I didn’t want to end. I liked the fast paced style, I really felt like I was a part of the character’s lives and wanted them to have a happy ending. I would love to go back and read the series from the start now, I loved Bloody and Unbowed so much I just know I would love the previous stories too. Soldiers that find their match in the most unlikely people, what is not to love about that. Five Shooting Stars
Daryl and Emerson couldn't be more wrong for each other other than the fact that they are exactly what the other needs.
I loved Emerson's smart ass mouth and the back and forth between the two men was fun to read. You knew from the beginning that Daryl had a chip on his shoulder, but that just made his fall even more fun to read.
I really enjoyed the fact that Emerson loved Daryl for who he was and didn't want to change him, but Daryl wanted to change for Emerson.
This was my favorite story in the series so far and I can't wait to see who is next. The writing keeps getting stronger and I am in for the duration!
And I have to say that I am very intrigued by Matthew's, Daryl's brother, relationship and wouldn't mind reading more about it.
Books 1 & 2 were rather bland without much connection to, or between, the characters. This story had more depth and better characterizations. Daryl's past and the influences that shaped his actions were drawn more clearly. Emerson's history wasn't as detailed but there was good detail. It wasn't a long, drawn out romance. There was more action, as well as a better buildup of the relationship. There was a little angst for spice.
Reread 1/9/16
I got book 5, even though these aren't consistent in quality. I wanted to refresh my memory. My opinion really hasn't changed.
This book was about a scientist who was kidnapped and held a group of terrorists The scientist's name was Emerson he was held in a jungle. Emerson managed to slip away from the terrorists and ran. Darrel was sent to get him out of the country. During there escape they both turned out to be snarky with each other and the story begins. There was exciting action as well as romance. A very good read.
I really enjoyed this book much better than the first two. I was ecpecting to read about a true badass and that was exactly what I got. With the right amount of hearts and flowers. These two MCs were great together and I love that it wasn't an insta-love. Their relationship took more than a couple of days or even weeks to develope. I'm ready for the next...
A good addition to the series. Emerson and Daryl make a great pair. Well written, good characters, I really enjoy the series and am looking forward to more from this Author!
Enjoyed this book. Good read. About 90 pages. MM. Daryl and Emerson. Daryl also known as D-Day, rescues Emerson who is being held by a terror group. Both are well rounded characters.
