Biographies can be an absolute drag, so I won’t bore anyone with a long life story.
I was born in Brasilia, Brazil where I spent my childhood and teenage years. After graduating from high school, I moved to the USA where I studied psychology with specialization in criminal behaviour. During my University years I held a variety of odd jobs, ranging from flipping burgers to being part of an all male exotic dancing group.
I worked as a criminal psychologist for several years before moving to Los Angeles, where I swapped the suits and briefcases for ripped jeans, bandanas and an electric guitar. After a spell playing for several well known glam rock bands, I decided to try my luck in London, where I was fortunate enough to have played for a number of famous artists. I toured the world several times as a professional musician.
A few years ago I gave it all up to become a full time writer.
Oh boy what a dark mind you have Mr Carter, and with the marketing blurb that actually did match the story, you have an incredibly twisted psychological thriller that was interwoven with some very important themes of murder, bullying, living with disability, grief, and suicide.
The Marketing blurb: A killing like no other – that was certainly true A killer more twisted than he’s ever seen before – you can say that again. I’m in shock A case that will test him to the limit – you would be emotionally, mentally, and physically drained and that’s just the reader. Even a seasoned detective like Robert Hunter would need psychiatric help after solving a case of this magnitude and level of brutality.
The plot
“Through these eyes, no one will ever look as perfect as you did. Through this heart, no love will ever surpass my love for you. Through this soul, no pain will ever be greater than the pain of losing you”
The calling cards left at the scene in and around the body of the victims suggest something and someone with purpose, and someone possessing the kind of hate and evil few people are capable of. However, with no connection to the victims or the lyrics, Hunter after 10 days is no further forward in solving the crime.
Instead, he knows he is dealing with a killer who is tremendously disciplined, systematic, creative, and patient. A killer whose MO was too complex to be copied and too complex for freaky coincidences.
However, with more lines and more victims but an unexpected breakthrough the story comes to a satisfying conclusion and an end to one heck or a rollercoaster, adrenaline pumping story that will leave you uncomfortable and a little stunned.
Review and Comments
So, what is to like and dislike about this story!!
This was one twisted, deranged, and disturbed individual. Even serial killers would stop short at this level of depravity and torturous methods, even if it had some dark meaning. I didn’t need to know the gory details of each crime scene, it was enough to tell me someone was tortured.
For me personally, this overstepped the mark. It was just too gruesome especially given the motive. This is the work of a psychopath and someone devoid of human emotion, remorse, or empathy, not the work of a vengeful person no matter what drove them to seek retribution.
In the end, I came to the conclusion that the author tried too hard in the wrong direction to make the book better than his last one and went up a notch on the shock factor. There was also an implausibility to some of the book, for example the person responsible would not have been physically capable of murdering some of the victims in this way. I can say no more.
However, this was exceptionally atmospheric but in a creepy way. The pace, the adrenaline rush you get from Chris Carter books cannot be matched. A superb storyteller that keeps you hooked even though you don’t want to continue reading the story, because ‘you need to know what happens and why!!! The handling of some very important and sensitive themes was also excellent.
So, as a huge fan of Chris Carter, I have very mixed feelings after reading this one. It was too violent and too much gory detail for my personal tastes, so I am regrettably at 3.5 going down. If the violence had been toned down somewhat to match the original crime, then for the plot and storytelling, I would not have hesitated in giving this 5 stars.
Do you believe the devil exists? Well if you don’t, and if you aren’t averse to extremely gory and violent crime scenes, maybe it’s time you start reading Chris Carter books… his first 10 books, that is. You will be converted before you can say knife!
This book could have been a 5 star read, but for the following reasons: It was long! Too long! It had long and boring conversations, most of them omitable. It had long and repetitive descriptions. The scene of crime and the investigation method seemed copy/pasted from the previous books… even the dialogues between the detectives were the same. The twists were good, but came much too late. After the perpetrator was revealed, the book went on and on and on. In my opinion, a couple of chapters after the bad guy is found is more than enough.
I had to finish it ASAP as I couldn't support the feeling of my guts frozen from fear. Yes, it has too much gore and too many details that I could do without, but why at the end of the day are we choosing to read a crime book? We are looking for some dose of adrenaline. This book has a surplus of it. But how this all came to Chris Carter's mind? How can he live with such a mind?
I read all his books about Robert Hunter and couldn't refuse the desire to read the last one in the series. And if you start reading it, you cannot put it down in fear that if you won't know who was the killer and why he did it, you would not have rest at night.
If you want to read it, do it, but be ready to overcome all your fears. I am not going to tell anything about the story as murders are starting from the beginning of the book and revealing anything will be spoiling the pleasure of reading the book.
“it begins with fear” says the cover…. It certainly does. A new Chris Carter book is always a celebration in our house, both my husband and I are big fans. There was an argument over who would read it first, and I won as ai read faster than he does. I settled in on Saturday night and read 200 pages, and then demolished the rest on a lazy Sunday. I wanted to finish it but savour it at the same time.
Chris Carter books are addictive. You know those TV series that you can’t get enough of.. his books are like that. I am a big crime/detective fiction reader and they can be alot for me. It takes a lot to scare me these days in books.. Genesis scared me, after the first chapter, I was checking all the doors and windows were locked.
These are some of the most gruesome crime scenes I have read. Hunter and Garcia cannot believe what they are seeing and they have seen a lot of them. Some of them turned my stomach. This is one sadistic killer. The pieces of the puzzle are slowly revealed and it all comes to a chilling and surprising conclusion.
This book will not be for everyone, I totally appreciate that. There are some strong themes of suicide and mental health throughout the story and I think that the author did a wonderful job with it. The dedication at the start is beautiful and made me cry even before I started to read it, The end of the book has details of helplines for those who are struggling. As someone who has needed these resources in the past.. thank you Chris. Such and important message.
I couldn’t love this book anymore and it up is up there with The Caller for my favourite in this series.
If you like dark, disturbing and very messed up crime books.. this is the series for you.
One problem with Chris Carter's books is that they are addictive. Another problem - when you finish one, it can take you ages to find something else remotely that good. You feel like a kid whose favourite toy has been taken away. I read Genesis in Bulgarian but I will definitely read it in English too as soon as my pre-ordered copy arrives. I kept back-translating all the time (force of habit, I guess). This ruined my experience to some extent, although I must say the translation was good. Genesis takes us on another Robert Hunter journey of terror. We meet a killer so vicious and meticulous that even the Ultra-Violent Crimes Unit shudder. He calls himself The Mentor. He torments his victims by causing extreme fear, then excruciating pain and finally death. He always leaves part of a poem with the body and in a day or two after the murder, sends a video message to the victim's loved one. A message that makes them lose their mind. I won't say more in order not to spoil things or you. Just make sure you have enough time to read the book from cover to cover because when it comes to suspense, Chris Carter never disappoints!
Even though the page count is of 500+ more, I was damn sure that this author will not disappoint the readers in any way and it comes out true. Once again one of the best in Robert Hunter series. People are getting murdered one after another in grotesque way and the killer psychologically damages their loved ones by sending a message after a day of how they got murdered. Robert & Carlos start investigating but the killer MO changes continuously which is unpredictable. But when the reason for why these murder are happening and dots are connected it makes logically strong. It has pros and cons, pros- When Chris carter writes it's all about murders but every time he picks some thing different with the victim and reason for murder, but at the end knots are not revealed simply rather one after another with twists. Cons - Suddenly Hunter getting dream and that connect with the next sequence, his close connection with Air marshal remembering at the time when it was required.
Genesis is the 12th book in Chris Carter's Robert Hunter series and again it is quintessentially Chris Carter. By that, I mean gruesome murder scenes but very rarely is the murder described first-hand, Chris' way is to have the victim found and the aftermath be described. The majority of the time the victim is "displayed" in a fashion that relates to the reason behind the killing - as is the case in Genesis.
Firstly, Genesis has nothing to do with the bible, so please don't avoid it because of Faith. The story follows Detectives Hunter and Garcia as they try to solve a recent spate of murders. These murders happen in quick succession and although traits make the same killer an obvious conclusion, the victims themselves have nothing to do with each other, nor are they of the same gender, race, or social group. These murders all appear to be very opportunistic and with no robbery associated there appears to be no motive aside from random thrill killing.
Hunter and Garcia need to find the common thread before they can unravel the case but what they find is not as surprising as who the perpetrator actually is. A real page-turner, great read, well recommended.
Negana to - ir jautrūs.
Geriausias autoriaus darbas.
Please, eliminuokit iš veikėjų kapitonę Bleik!! 😃 Dieve, visas skyrius kvepia looser'iais jos paklausius😃 Na ir Hunteris vėl savo stichijoj- kraujas (o ir kiti organai) liejasi laisvai vėl! Scenarijus nupieštas pagal tą pačią schemą, tik spalvos šiek tiek sutirštintos...o labai tikėjausi naujų vėjų!!! *********************************************** Please eliminate captain Blake! All the department starts smelling as of the loosers 😃 While Hunter is back on the stage- let the blood (and other body parts) run free...The script is drawn according to the same sceme, only the colours are slightly thickened🥺 and I was expecting some new ideas!
To nemažai daliai detektyvų kūrėjų pritrūksta.
Kraupu. Tiesiog kraupu.
Priklauso nuo to, kokio tipo knygos ieškote.
Jei ir jūs esate vieni tų, kurie po sunkios dienos atsipalaiduoja žiūrėdami true crime dokumentikas ir skaitydami gana žiaurius detektyvus - ši knyga Jums patiks. Ji lengvai skaitoma, pagauli ir itin žiauri, tad įsivertinkite savo jautrumą, o jei tas negąsdina - pirmyn.
Pleased to get my hands on the latest Chris Carter thriller, I eagerly read the book to see how things would progress in yet another police procedural with psychological thriller undertones. Detective Robert Hunter is back for another in-depth exploration of a psychotic killer whose motives only become apparent after a significant amount of analysis. Carter provides the reader with a stunning story that takes things to gruesome levels, but never loses its momentum. A great thriller in line with other novels in the series, proving Chris Carter can impress and captivate with ease.
Detective Robert Hunter has long been a valuable member of the Ultra Violent Crime division of LAPD Homicide, investigating the most heinous crimes committed. While this may be the case, he has always seen it eat away at his inner self, which leaves Hunter to wonder how much energy he has left.
When he and his partner are called to the scene of a brutal murder, where the victim has been hung up with a giant fish hook, Hunter begins to wonder if he has reached the edge of the depravity people could inflict on others. With a piece of poetry left at the scene, Hunter and others within the LAPD begin to ponder if this message has a deeper meaning.
When other killings occur with completely different motives, it is only the line of poetry that connects them all together. Hunter must use all the resources at his disposal to determine what’s going on and how to connect the dots. It is only when taking a step back and syntheising the evidence that Detective Hunter makes a possible connection, though this is not guaranteed to come to fruition.
With time running out and another victim sure to be targeted by the killer soon, Hunter will have to try to stay one step ahead. How does the killer choose their victims and what motive ties them all together? Hunter and the rest of the team will have to make sense of this, taking things back to the beginning, the so-called genesis of the killer’s motivation. Chris Carter impresses with a story that leaves no time to catch one’s breath, but keeps the reader turning pages well into the night.
I have always enjoyed the writing of Chris Carter, who pulls out all the stops in order to hook the reader from the opeeening pages. In a story that provides a substantial amount of narrative progression, Carter also adds his trademark collection of gruesome killings, which help the reader take note. Great storytelling and intricate puzzling together of clues provide the reader with an entertaining experience while chilling them to the core.
Chris Carter has never suffered from an inability to captivate, no matter the angle of his story. He uses a strong narrative to set the scene, adding highly descriptive moments and short chapters to keep the reader intrigued and wanting to read more. The characters, which series fans will have come to know well, continue to have depth to their personal backstories and fit together effectively for the overall experience. Plot lines emerge throughout, with twists to keep the story from being too predictable. The story is built on layers, which are slowly pulled back in order to get the the kernel. However, even atthat point, nothing is completely linear. There is a chilling aspect to the piece that Carter instills with each of his publications, though this is offset with great background development, keeping things from being too gory. I have seen the strain the series has taken on Detective Robert Hunter, but he is just so strong a character that I hope Carter has more to come.
Kudos, Mr. Carter, for another chilling thriller that cements your place at the top of the genre!
Stipri ir šiurpi knyga. Man labai patiko.
This is just sad and heartbreaking. I didn’t even realise that tears were streaming down my face during the latter part. One of the saddest books in the series, for sure.
This series has me in a chokehold. I felt like I was part of the LAPD UV unit, investigating these murders alongside Robert and Garcia. I am so attached to these characters that if something ever happens to any of them in future books, I’d be completely devastated.
As always, the investigative process was brilliant. Chris Carter’s knowledge and expertise in psychology and criminal behaviour shine through in every crime scene—bits and pieces of trivia about how the human brain works, how it responds to grief, trauma, and shock. I learned a lot about the human psyche, things I didn’t even know I needed to understand until this book.
My heart shattered once the pieces of the puzzle finally came together and the killer’s motive was revealed. So, so tragic.
Another masterpiece from Chris. I’m pretty sad because this is the 12th book and I only have one more left. Here’s to hoping Chris releases the 14th book very soon.
As with most books in this series – intriguing plot, good characters, strong procedures and disturbing violence.
The story starts with Melissa Hawthorne arriving home in a taxi at around 2 am. She had met an interesting man - Mark at the party and while she declined his suggestion, was still hoping she would get a message or a call from him. She gets some messages from an unknown number and the sender tells her that he should be regarded as a mentor who will teach her about fear, pain and death. Melissa is found dead next day by her stepsister Janet Lang. It is clear that she had endured extreme violence before dying. There is also a two line note which seems to be from a poem. Robert Hunter and his partner Carlos Garcia are called to investigate. The clean scene leads Garcia to speculate that this may not be the killer’s first crime, and Robert concurs. More deaths follow and it is apparent that a serial killer is on the prowl. It is unclear if there is any connection between the victims.
Robert and Garcia painstakingly pursue all possible motives and suspects to unravel the case. The procedural work is excellent, and I loved how the pieces came together slowly. While this is a big book, the story holds the tension right till the end. The last sections are a bit theatrical and could have been better. Robert Hunter’s character, as always, is a delight to follow.
Tai to paties nusikaltėlio darbas. Robertas supranta, jog tokį disciplinuotą bei kelis žingsnius į priekį apsvarstantį serijinį žudiką sučiupti lengva nebus. Tačiau jis neturi kito pasirinkimo..
Na nieko naujo nepasakysiu, apart to, jog man be galo patiko ši knyga!
I wish there was a way I could give this book more stars than 5 as it is an important story incredibly well told.
As always with a Chris Carter book there are some very gruesome murders. Following Hunter and Garcia as they trawl through the clues trying to find the way to what is happening was a fascinating read. As the ending evolved, I found myself thinking what an important message this book is telling and hoping that it is understood.
The dedication which starts this book is such an important message also and it is fantastic that there are avenues for help listed at the back with contact details for anyone in crisis and who needs them.
Thank you for writing this amazing book, I'm now hoping there will be a book 13 and looking forward to it!
