Raised behind the impenetrable Orb of River Storm, Kienna is destined to serve and protect her city as the Starborn from the evil festering beyond the barrier after the War of Liberation. She, and four other Guardians, are gifted magic by the great and powerful King Vaerin.
Then Kienna discovers the king’s secret and throws his gift back in his face.
When River Storm’s lies shatter, Kienna makes the impossible choice to help a rebel army tear down the Orb and run. She never expected the other Guardians to follow. Now, hunted and broken, they discover a world far different than the one they were taught to fear. A world that forces them to question everything, including themselves.
As loyalties fracture, and kingdoms prepare for war, Kienna must decide who she truly the obedient weapon the king forged…or the flame that will burn his empire to ash.
One Flame to defy fate, if she has the strength to let it burn.
I honestly did not expect to love this book as much as I did, but once I started, I was all in. This story completely pulled me into its world and never let go. What starts out feeling like a familiar epic fantasy setup slowly unfolds into something deeper, more emotional, and way more layered than I anticipated.
The multi-POV is one of the biggest strengths here. Instead of feeling overwhelming or repetitive, each perspective added depth and context, enriching the story in such a natural way. I loved getting inside different characters’ heads and seeing how their experiences, loyalties, and fears shaped the bigger picture. Every POV felt purposeful, and by the end, I was genuinely invested in all of them.
The characters are such a standout. They feel real, flawed, and shaped by the world they live in. I especially loved watching the FMC navigate her journey her growth isn’t about suddenly becoming powerful, but about reclaiming herself and learning to trust her own choices. That emotional arc hit hard in the best way. The found family elements were also beautifully done and felt earned through shared struggle rather than convenience.
The world-building is immersive without being heavy handed. There’s this constant undercurrent that something isn’t quite right, and watching the truth slowly come into focus alongside the characters made everything feel earned and impactful. Add in magic, tension, rebellion, animal companions, and a genuinely unsettling antagonist, and this book checked so many of my favorite fantasy boxes.
The romance is a true slow burn, more about tension and connection than big dramatic moments, and it fits perfectly within the larger story instead of overpowering it.
By the time I finished, I was already desperate for the next book. This was such a satisfying, emotionally rich read, and I can’t wait to see where this series goes next. Thank you to the author for the gifted ARC.
The line from the blurb "what do you want, Little Flame?" has literally been going round my head for weeks since I saw it on Instagram! it just got me obsessed and I couldn't wait to dive in. Whilst the pacing at the start was a little slow for me, the world building and characters carried me through until I was just as invested, when the pacing started picking up. So by the end, I was giddy.
Honored to be able to have and read a early copy of this book! Wow i have to say, if you’re looking for an epic fantasy that’ll knock your socks off this is it! The romance is SLOW burn but the crumbs you get i ate right up and loved every second of it. The story line between all the characters and the multiple pov gave it such depth to all the characters i feel like i have a feel for all there personalities and its a such a unique feeling!! I loved being in baila head, with this being said not sure if ill be able too moving forward 👀 but i wouldn’t be surprised with what Sam has up her sleeves for the next books! Broan is a piece of work and Danek i just felt bad for 😅 But i will say i ATE up Tristan and i cannot wait for more of him in the next books (Sam pls give me more of him bc i love him i can’t help it) Also wolf boy connak and his connect to Kienna im so intrigued by and cant see why or how that is happening…. alsoooo do i see a tease at fated mates?? 👀 I can’t wait to get my grubby hands on the next one! thankkk you truly an amazing debut novel
First, I would like to thank Samantha Vargas and her team for choosing me to be an ARC reader for this phenomenal book! I am so honored.
As soon as I read this book I was hooked! I was immediately obsessed with the dynamic and lovable characters, beautiful prose, immersive and unique world building, and exciting plot. So much so that this book was my favorite read of 2025!
The plot follows the Guardians, a group of young people tasked by their king with protecting the city of RiverStorm from threats from beyond the walls. After discovering everything they know is a lie, they are thrust onto an adventure together that causes their loyalties to shift.
This book has everything I love in a fantasy series: slow burn romance, magic, animal companions, elves, and a heavy focus on friendship.
The FMC, Kienna is a soft yet strong character who feels like a real person with relatable flaws and fears. She was raised up to be a ruthless fighter yet has an artistic/ kind soul, making her a realistic character that the reader wants to root for.
The side characters, especially the sassy wolf companion have captured my heart forever and I know they will capture yours too!
Vargas is an excellent writer and I just know this book series is going to be a new favorite amongst fantasy readers! I cannot wait to read book 2! ❤️

This elemental magic infused fantasy was fun to read!
Kienna and four other Guardians have been tasked by King Vaerin of River Storm to keep the magic built barrier running. This barrier keeps them protected from the outside world filled with evil creatures, and the unknown. Or so they thought. When a rebel army of Elves led by Connak, an elf who can mind speak with Kienna, breaks through the barrier, Kienna and the four Guardians use this opportunity to escape Vaerin’s clutches. However, the world outside of River Storm hold secrets of its own, and Kienna struggles to take control of her power while also keeping secrets of her own hidden. Kienna soon learns the truth of her lineage, and sets out to discover who she truly is meant to be. But will this discovery lead to the world she knew and the world she found crumbling to ash?
This story was fun, ethereal, and I loved the elemental magic that is developed throughout. The world of the Elves, which very much gives LOTR vibes, is one of my favorite parts. And I do have a favorite elf in Risen from Ash, but you will have to read to find out exactly who. I am excited to read the next installment of the Guardians of Alistile!

"What do you want, Little Flame?" It was a question Kienna never dared to ask. Review: What a phenomenally written book. I don’t even know where to start!!! First off I was 100% vested in the book from the very beginning. There is Exceptional world building!!, Relatable characters( multiple POV), elemental magic, animal bonds , unexpected plot twists and so much more. If you love epic fantasy then this is one you don’t want to miss! Big thank you to Alex Vargas for the opportunity to read the eARC.
This story pulled me in immediately. The world-building is strong from the start, the plot is engaging, and the pacing never drags. You’re dropped straight into the world and guided through it naturally as the characters begin to unfold, which made it incredibly easy to stay invested.
This is true epic fantasy, the focus is on the world, the magic, and the characters finding themselves. There’s no smut and only minimal romance, and honestly? It’s perfect that way. I never once felt like something was missing. The small moments of yearning that are there are subtle and intriguing, enough to make you wonder where things might go without overpowering the story. It even has you questioning whether a love triangle could be on the horizon.
The magical elements are fascinating, especially the themes of betrayal and uncovering identity, which feel essential to the character development that’s clearly being set up for future books. I loved the variety of species , Vikings, humans, elves all coming together in a way that gives strong LOTR and Throne of Glass vibes without feeling derivative.
And the bonded magical wolf? Absolutely adorable and such a standout element.
Everything feels connected, purposeful, and well written. The characters, the world, the magic, it all works. Sam, you’ve done an incredible job, and I cannot wait to see where this story goes in book two.
This was a really strong read overall, even if the beginning took a bit longer to fully grab me. The pacing in the first part felt slower than I personally prefer, but one the story found its stride, I was fully invested.
Kienna’s journey is the heart of the book. Watching her rise from trauma, reclaim her strength and slowly rebuild herself was both powerful and deeply satisfying. Her growth feels earned and the author does a beautiful job illustrating how healing isn’t linear. The relationships she gains along the way add depth to the story and play a big role in her evolution. The connections feel intentional and meaningful rather than just filler.
Overall, the plot is compelling and thoughtfully layered. Once the story picks up it’s hard to put down. The world and narrative pull you in, blending heartache, resilience, and hope in a way that feels authentic and raw. This is a strong, impactful story and we get to watch Kienna rise from her darkest moments.
I really enjoyed this read and want to thank the author for the opportunity to read their work!
I’m going to say it now… one of the best epic romantasy that I’ve read to date.
All of the multiple POV’s were honestly awesome. Getting different perspectives, and views… loved it.
The men in this book 🤯⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I loved me some Broan with his snarky, sometimes jerky, self. He made for good comedic timing. Tristan gives off “yes sir” vibes (if you know you know). My guy Connak is definitely our “I’m it” guy. But, we can’t leave Danek out of the running.., friends to lovers anyone 😉. Who knows. I know I didn’t want it to end.
The ladies in the book served. Moira with her nurturing vibes. Kienna is a little broken but not beat. I can’t wait to see her flourish and kick butt. I’d like for Baila to fall off a cliff.
Absolutely phenomenal book! I fell in love with this one immediately. The world building was exquisite. The detail was amazing, that you could clearly see everything in your mind as read and went through this world with the characters. And speaking of the characters. Omgosh just incredible. They felt so real, looked so real in my mind. Emotions, physicality, was just amazing. I loved the depth of each one of them. And my gosh some of the men were so hot. But I loved the story itself as well. It really pulled you in. The twists and turns. Secrets and betrayal. Things took place that I never saw coming. This was an awesome book. I loved every minute of it. In thankful that I was chosen to be on the ARC team for this one. Thank you so much. It was a true pleasure.
Risen from Ash by Samantha Vargas ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ solid 4star/ 4.5 for me
Risen from Ash is an enthralling page-turner that masterfully balances emotion and adventure. Vargas's world-building is truly remarkable, I loved the unpredictable plot twists and the exploration of chosen family!
Vargas weaves together themes of belonging and identity, showcasing how the bonds formed in adversity can be as strong as those of blood. The writing is rich and immersive, with detailed descriptions that bring the magical world to life. The pacing keeps readers on the edge of their seats, especially with the unexpected plot twists that challenge the characters and their relationships.
I can’t wait for book two to see where this story goes!
I received an ARC copy of this book and I LOVED it! It has multiple POV so you get invested into all the relevant characters. This book is like Throne of Glass, but with Elvish people, talking animal companions, and a totally different magic system. Like I said, the magic system is very unique, and all the characters have different abilities. There’s a sassy animal companion, which is great to add some comedic relief in with all the heavy topics this book brushes on. This book has secrets, betrayal, and dark topics all throughout. It also doesn’t end on a cliff hanger, so you won’t be absolutely miserable until the next book, it has a solid ending that still has you wanting more. I absolutely cannot wait to finish this series, I’m in love!
Risen from Ash by Samantha Vargas delivers a nice story with heartfelt moments and characters that show genuine promise. The core narrative has warmth and potential that draws readers in during its stronger scenes. While the concept is appealing, the writing felt a bit confusing at times, which occasionally disrupted the flow and made it challenging to stay fully engaged. With clearer structure and smoother execution, the story could truly shine.Overall, a thoughtful read with a solid heart and room for growth in storytelling clarity. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Three stars.
I received an ARC of this book and was very excited to dive in. I very much enjoyed the story and appreciated the multiple POVs. I liked the author’s take on elemental magic. The initial world building took some time and I was a little confused at first. There were a lot of unknowns for the characters in the beginning, but as they journeyed throughout, we got to see their growth and revelations come to light. I am excited to continue with book two and find out what happens with the group.
this was.. infuriating for me, if I'm being honest. I'm not sure why, but almost all of the characters seemed really bland, lacked emotion, and just overall fell flat. maybe it was just me, since all the other reviews everyone has loved it! I probably should have just dnf'd, but I was really hoping it would get better.
It also seemed like nothing happened at all. no one would communicate and just demanded trust and allegiance from each other through the entire book without giving any reason as to why. that just made me want to scream. even the group of guardians as a whole didn't seem like they shared any thoughts or feelings for each other and were there to save themselves. there was no bond between any of them.
Hi! What an amazing read! Thank you to the author; I enjoyed that one of my first December reads was Risen from the Ash. Now, let's start with the review. -- It's interesting how each character is introduced to a main perspective (the FMC), but that changes through her development, so the narrative about each character seems to evolve with her. Like, there's a confusion of what should and shouldn't be felt about some characters. It shows the need for adaptability for the survival of the characters; maybe it doesn't cause empathy from the reader, but a feeling of wrongness at the start of the story, like, something doesn't feel right about it. -- I liked how the multiple POVs help getting a fuller picture of the world-building and diversity of perspectives to consider during the storyline's progresion. Although, I do have to admit that it's very hard writting from multiple POVs, since you have to remember the shift between perspectives from one moment in the plot to another without loosing the main storyline and the character particularities (what makes one POV diferent from the others). So, very well done to the author, my brain didn’t just change the voice (or pitch of it) of the character, when I read or changed of POV. -- For our FMC, Kienna, wow I didn’t expect her character or the storyline following her. At first, I was very frustrated about the way she interacted with everyone in the story, but as I kept reading, I started to actually understand the background of her decision making skills (I mean poor girl). As a main characters I think she's unique, every book has a underestimated FMC that becomes strong with the glow of the book, but she's strong from the beginning. I felt that her story is much more empowering, because she decided to get away from everything she was taught, because it was hurting her. -- It's funny, in a painful way, how easy it seems to show in writing some of the consequences of living in a narcissistic environment. At least while we use themes of fantasy and kings or heroes, it makes it feel almost less painful and much more "heroic", but I loved the way the FMC's growth showcases her ups and downs in realistic details, like the feeling behind an action or her anger towards the injustice or lies she has to live. -- So, my favorite character is Moira; her interactions with others read as honest and wise. She's simply worried for her future (kind of empathize with her). -- I loved the shift in the narrative, how at first it seems like a fantasy world, with a king and a guard with powers, but still something feels suspicious, like there's something vital that's missing from the story that could completely change the plot; that gives the genre of fantasy a more mysterious or even darker tone. -- I've liked the approach to the military war behind the main trope; it's well written since it combines the world-building of the book with the characters knowledge of war (with the main plot). Another thing, I can't say I didn’t expect who the main villain would be, but the background of the character turned out to be a lot darker than what I expected. Also, thank you for giving us an evil villain without a tragic story that makes the readers empathize; he's simply evil. -- Now, this is a good first book for a fantasy series. Honestly, the writing style seems like a great mix between the style of Realm Breaker (the magic context, world-building, and the character's profiles) and Hunger Games (the interaction between characters and the villain's interaction with the FMC). So, if you like either of these books, then Risen from Ash is another amazing book to add to your list.
"We spent our whole lives training for something none of us thought would come, and now we’re on the other side of it."
Risen from Ash is a fun adventurous fantasy novel, full of risk and taking leaps of faith. Five guardians protect the city of River Storm, serving to reinforce and maintain the Orb, a barrier protecting them from the evil that lurks in the world beyond. As their isolated world begins to crumble the question of where the true evil resides causes the guardians to choose a side that could change the outcome of the upcoming war as the barrier is breached.
I found this novel really hard at the beginning as we are introduced to five characters, in a complex political system and a turbulent world of unknowns. There was so much to unpack at the beginning, that I found it difficult to be invested in the story as five perspectives tell the story, so the general set-up for me was slow. I love multiple POVs and having six in total is ambitious. I think every point of view has its place in this story but I think some of them could have been left until the foundations of the world were laid out. For me, there was also an imbalance on the amount spent on the points of view, there are some characters I really want to hear more from. I think spending more time with each character in equal amounts would give them a stronger impression and form a connection between each character and the reader.
The time spent on the structure and detail of the plot was so well thought out, and I think this series has a lot of promise to be a gem fantasy series. One aspect of this book in particular I think might be misleading is the label of this book being a slow-burn. There is a hint that one will develop, but in my opinion it doesn't feature in this book. I think it will be a slow-burn series (I think 7 books in total are planned); so my advice, think it as what you would expect in a trilogy when it comes to slow-burn romance.
Secrets and answers are definitely the hook in this story. There are so many cards being played but each character keeps their hold close to their chest. Very little is actually revealed. Can't decide if this is good or bad? Saying that the ending was left dangling over a step rather than a cliffhanger, its satisfying while leaving you wanting more.
A thrilling fantasy read that promises to only grow. I'm excited to see what Samantha Vargas does with this series, she is a talented writer, and I look forward to reading her future books.
I've started to write this review several times and have struggled to find the right words. I was delighted to receive an eARC from the author in exchange for this review. I went into the story knowing two things, elemental magic and wolf companion. That sold me early!
The beginning, like most fantasies, is a bit slow. The world is building up around you, you're getting to know all the main characters, side characters, and the magic system, and trying to create a map of not just the kingdom but the murky history that it was built upon. Turns out that murky history isn't poor writing, it's incredibly intentional! Don't quite this one too early, it's worth it!
There are 5-6 POVs through this story and I'm sure we will keep up with those through this series as it's set to be 5 books (I think)! I was thankful that the chapters weren't too long but kept me moving in a forward motion, not a lot of scenes repeated from different character's perspectives. Each character took time throughout the story to get to know them. They are each uniquely described with deep emotions, fears, dreams, and histories. Each character changes from who they were in those first few chapters to who they are becoming by the end. I'm looking forward to even more character development and growth in the coming sequels!
Your MAIN main character is Kienna. I would say as the story unfolds she becomes the "chosen one" sort of position. But the story starts out with her being the weakest in terms of her magic and confidence. She doesn't feel like she has purpose or depth until... well until later.
The Guardians of Alistile, not just the title of the book, are a group of 5 year adults (early 20s) who were specially chosen and trained by River Storm's king. He is the only human in their kingdom with magic and uses it as a conduit to imbue magic into his guardians. Each seems to have a specialty but they are bound by the amount of power the king grants them. Together, the guardians protect the city by keeping the protective dome in tact around everyone and everything. Know one comes to River Storm and most who try to leave are found dead. The world beyond the wall is shrouded in mystery and intrigue. When a while opportunity arises to cross it, Kienna barely hesitates but the rest of the guardians aren't quite as keen.
First book in a future serie about 5 guardians that have been recruited by a king since their childhood to defend a city where evils lurks outside of the wall. They will have to face some truths and discoveries after an attack.
Pros-: - I loooooooooove multiple POV. This may seems like a lot (5 or 6 I think) for some but I felt like this was necessary for this story to be well told. - Nothing like a Mad King to hype you for the story - No spice! So it's all about the plot and (almost) no love story
Cons -: -The whole book was good, but I felt like a lot of things felt pretty similar to Blood And ash series. I know fantasy always circles back to pretty much the same things but this felt like a lot of coincidences i.e.: - Didn't really like the plot with the versus Kienna. This has nothing to do with the author just with the character lol. She was pissing me off with all the secrecy but then expecting the MFC to make decisions based on ... nothing? - Main characthers have wayyy to many secrets, at some point I was wondering if anyone was gonna tell anything ... -The Baila storyarc was predictable and I felt like it was not well exploited. - The serie is announced as to be of 7 books and this feels like a lot
Overall I loved the story and will be reading the second book because I have a lot of questions haha Very good book for an indepedant author and I could feel all the work that was put in. Thank you to the author for the opportunity for this ARC.
I did not expect this book to hit me the way it did.
Risen from the Ash was so incredible. What starts as an epic fantasy setup slowly moves into something much deeper: a story about unlearning lies, reclaiming agency, and choosing who you are when everything you were raised to believe turns out to be wrong.
I was absolutely obsessed with the FMC. She is conflicted, thoughtful, and shaped by a lifetime of control and expectation. Watching her question authority, wrestle with guilt and fear, and make impossible choices felt incredibly real. Her growth was not about becoming powerful, but becoming free.
The world building is immersive without being overwhelming. I loved how the truth of the world unfolds alongside Kienna’s understanding of it. There is a constant sense that something is off early on, and when the lies finally crack, the story shifts in a way that feels earned rather than shocking for the sake of it.
LOVED the multiple POVs! Each character feels distinct, with their own voice, motivations, and internal struggles. The found family dynamic is one of the strongest parts of the book. These relationships develop naturally through shared hardship and choice, not convenience.
The romance is a true slow burn, more about tension and emotional connection than big moments, and it works beautifully within the larger story. Add in divine magic, rebellion, political tension, animal companions, and a genuinely unsettling villain, and this book hits so many of my favorite fantasy notes.
Most of all, this book understands that surviving does not mean you are fine. It explores the emotional consequences of control, manipulation, and betrayal with care and nuance.
I closed the book already desperate for the next one.
First, I want to send a huge thank you to Samantha Vargas for the gifted eARC copy of Guardians Of Alistile in exchange for my honest review! Now onto my thoughts about this book.
The main premise of this book follows Kienna and four other guardians as they are tasked with keeping the magical barrier that protects them, running. However, they quickly come to terms with the idea that maybe the world they live in, isn’t exactly what it seems. With the help of a rebel elf, Kienna and the guardians escape into a world that they know nothing about.
Overall, I felt like this book definitely packed a punch! The magic system was really cool and I really loved the idea of a rebel elven army. Kienna turned out to be a really great FMC and I truly felt for her because she had to go from a world of trying to control her magic and build up her own magic but then when she enters this brand new world, she ends up having to relearn how to control her power. She also finds herself stuck in between and rock and a hard place where she is trying to gain control but also keep her true identity a secret. I also loved the addition of having animal companions. I’ve only read a few books that have animal companions and I’m really loving the idea of it so when I saw that this book had them too, I instantly loved them! This book also contains some darker elements to it which I honestly enjoyed reading because I liked seeing how the characters grew from these experiences. There was such great character growth that made me even more invested in their lives and even more curious to see how this story continues in the future.
Wow. I have given myself a day after finishing this book to write my review and I am still not sure I have the right words😅
First lets start with first impressions: It grabs your attention right off the bat with a little bit of mystery and intrigue. I will say even though I love a multi POV, the beginning of the book was heavy on different POVs so it made it a little difficult to understand what was happening. I know this was a way to introduce us to important characters but did feel this should be noted.
That being said, it didn’t take too long before I got enveloped in the story and its diverse cast. Definitely worth sticking it out if you are a little lost in the beginning.
This story has an incredibly unique magic system, many beautiful settings and lots of inner turmoil. It includes some of that found family theme, animal companions and a really interesting plot.
I like that the ending of the book gives you more to look forward to in the next book without being a total cliffhanger, my anxious energy has a hard time with that😅
This book contains NO spice which is not a problem for me as I enjoy all levels of spice/no spice, and I know plenty of people who dislike it. I don’t think the book was lacking at all for this and loved that it could stand on its own without relying on any sexual themes.
All in all this book ranks very highly on my list as a recommendation for friends and family who love Fantasy, Magic, Family, Animal Companions and Learning who you are through mystery and hardships.
Thank you Samantha for sharing this world with your readers, I cannot wait for book two!
"Round and round, the silence spins. The dark has teeth and grins and grins." I can still hear that song haunting my head at night... and I absolutely love it! 🖤 Thank you Samantha for this advance copy! This book was an incredible start to a enchanting story, and I'm really looking forward to book Nº2! Living in a magicless kingdom, the Guardians are the only ones capable of wielding their King's magic.. but only because he allows it. One wrong move, one word out of place, and they'll soon find themselves rotting in the dungeons. I truly enjoyed the multiple POVs; each one was as important as it was interesting to read. All the lies, half-truths, secret identities, and betrayals.. everything led to a complex plot that’s going to be difficult to unravel. I really liked that the FMC’s nickname wasn’t mentioned in a romantic way, but rather by her animal companion in an endearing way. And the slow burn is really slow, with almost a “love quadrangle.” They’re all so sweet and caring in their own way, I honestly don’t know who to root for! And this story depicts how the characters struggle not only with physical wounds but also with mental scars, making their journey even more haunting. This story hooked me from the very first page and left me craving more. If book Nº2 brings even half the intrigue and tension of this one, I know I’m in for an unforgettable ride!

Epic Fantasy Readers Assemble! Risen from Ash is the perfect book one of what I can only describe as your next true fantasy obsession. Think Lord of the Rings meets Final Fantasy and this is the vibes!
It has been a long time since ive read such an enthralling epic fantasy story, this is just the perfect book one in a what im sure will be an epic (im more ways than one) series. This books sets up the character backgrounds, future plot and world building perfectly whilst still having a good depth to the actual story, its not just a setup book where not much happens. I really enjoyed that there was no spice in this book, I think it would of detracted from that overall epic fantasy feel. Im not against the suggest romance i just dont think there needs to be lots of spicey scenes in a tale like this one! Samantha's detailed writing really made me picture the world and creatures she was picturing without there being pages and pages of unnecessary detail, overall it was very well paced. The book is written from different POV throughout the story and I enjoyed that aspect and digging a bit deeper in to each of the characters, some more likeable than others so also very intrigued to see how my opinion on the not so likeable character's changes as more books are written. Overall if you love epic fantasy, vikings, clans, fierce loyalty character energy and epic quest storyline then this book, and im sure the series, will absolutely be for you. This is my favourite epic fantasy novel that ive read, fantastic read and the next book is one of my most anticipated epic reads of 2026 (hopefully!)
🫣 Forgotten/Hidden Memories 🦸🏻♀️ Vulnerable, “Real” FMC 🔥 Elemental Magic 🐺 Wolf Guardian 📚 Street Team Member
First off, I'm crossing all my fingers, toes and eyeballs to be apart of this Permanent Street Team. This is something truly epic and I want to be apart of it! RFA reads like Lord Of The Rings with all of the world-building and lore. Plus, you get a full cast of Guardians that are different personalities with unique abilities - a nod to Guardians Of The Galaxy. For all the readers looking for spice, move on… RFA is a true epic fantasy adventure. Some yearning is hinted, but nothing outright sexual of note. Be ready to go on an adventure (read this like the words of a famous Hobbit… wink wink)!
My favorite part of this book was the vulnerable, “real” FMC. She is deeply torn and constantly questions herself through RFA, something I can relate to personally. Kienna makes you feel okay to not be okay. You can still accomplish all of those great things in life, but sometimes that growth can be hard and tortuous. Again, something I can relate to at this specific time in my life. This was the right book for me to be reading at the right time in my life. It gave me all the feels and felt so homey with Lord Of The Rings vibes. Now I definitely want to read that series too! Thanks for adding to my TBR, Samantha!
Overall, I absolutely loved this book and it added to my life in more ways than one! I needed to read the words on those pages! Kienna, may we both rise from the ashes and brush off our pants to become our own heroes!
This is a compelling story about a group of magically gifted individuals under the impression they only serve one purpose in River Storm. One character, Kienna, unintentionally leads the group astray where they learn more about their own backstories and heritages.
The author does a great job of world building and using descriptive language in a way that really paints the world vividly for the reader. I also really liked the emotional complexity of Kienna. It was obvious while reading along how conflicted her feelings were for the king she served. I really felt that internal conflict as a reader. I also enjoyed that she was a “take it or leave it character,” where others in the book either admired her tenacity or had a deep rooted dislike for her. The connection she has with Connak and Danek is interesting. I’m hoping to see more of that dynamic unfold in subsequent books.
This book has multiple POV’s in third person. Overall, I don’t mind a third person perspective. I will say with it being in third person and perspectives changing within the same chapter, sometimes I found myself flipping back to remind myself who’s point-of-view we were in as they could incidentally blend together.
Overall, I loved the story! I really enjoyed the Elvish folklore and think it’s a refreshing take on blending multiple mythologies into one book. Especially for a debut novel, it’s truly impressive and a great story! I can’t wait to read-on when the next book is out!! I would absolutely recommend!
Wow! This book got me! I was intrigued from the beginning starting with the relationship between our FMC and the king (it was giving plated prisoner vibes!)
Anyway our FMC, thank you Samantha for not writing her as another cookie cutter fantasy FMC who is insufferable and lack of character development but somehow still becomes the chosen one..? Not our girl Kienna! Yes while she’s the “chosen” her character from the beginning was already strong. Yes under all that narcissistic nonsense she dealt with but she still had a strong character to begin with and then it’s development throughout the book was just beautiful to read!
Now the reason why I couldn’t fully give this a solid 4 stars was the amount of POVs Now I love multiple but at times it felt too much to keep up? Maybe the fact that my brain couldn’t switch up personalities/voices fast enough for even POV (that might be a me problem lol) but I do commend ms Samantha props for distinctly giving each character a solid personality and staying true to their own voice. 6 POV is ambitious but to pull it off was an added adventure! But yeah at time it felt too overwhelming with that many POV that I felt like could have been just used to lay the story without making. It its own POV not sure if that made sense lol
I really do enjoy this book and I cannot wait for book 2!
Thank Samantha for my e-ARC copy it was an honor to read this!

Risen from Ash, the first book in the Guardians of Alistile series, kicks off a bold, sweeping fantasy adventure from debut author Samantha Vargas. It follows a group of young adults gifted magic by their king to protect the realm from threats coming from all sides. Of course, nothing is as simple as it seems, and soon this found (perhaps a better word is forced) family is thrown from the world they know into the frying pan.
For fantasy readers, the book checks a lot of boxes: magic, elves, animal companions, betrayal, shifting histories, and big battles. Vargas writes with rich, detailed worldbuilding that feels like a throwback to classic fantasy, seemingly a rejection of the leaner prose that is currently trendy in today's fantasy.
The story is at its strongest when it centers on Kienna, the main character. She’s tough enough to avoid the damsel trap but vulnerable enough to feel believable, and she carries the emotional weight of the book. Even with a big cast, she stays front and center and keeps the story moving.
The book is not without its flaws. Its sprawling scope occasionally pushes against the seams of its 424 pages, and some side plots and supporting characters feel underdeveloped. However, as the opening volume of a planned seven part series, many will see this more as a feature than a bug.
All told, Risen from Ash is an ambitious and lovingly made first novel. Vargas is definitely an author worth keeping an eye on.
This story completely blindsided me in the best way. The blurb did not prepare me for the depth of the world, the emotional weight, or the intensity of what I was about to read.
This is a story about people discovering they’ve been lied to their entire lives, and realizing that the world they were taught to fear and believe would destroy them is actually the world in which they can thrive.
The world-building is phenomenal. Vargas creates two starkly different realities: one grey, lifeless, and suffocating, and one bright, alive, and full of possibility. The contrast between them is vivid and incredibly well done.
The characters are layered and real. I felt especially connected to Kienna, she’s written with such honesty and depth that she felt like a real person rather than just a character on a page.
I also loved how the multiple points of view were handled. Instead of feeling repetitive, each chapter picks up naturally where the last one left off, adding new layers and perspectives smoothly.
Spoiler-ish note: The battle scenes are brutal, and the author does not shy away from the violence. But the brutality serves a purpose, it forces growth, change, and transformation in the characters.
This is a harsh, powerful, and unforgettable story. It’s a brutal book in the best way, and I highly recommend it.
