Rune Leveau reported for her appointment with Ms. Rosenwald and was delayed by 3 guards who decided to give her a hard time. When that was finally over, she walked into the office where Ms. Rosenwald was in a fancy dress with LED lights all over it. The seamstress was trying to find why the LEDs kept going out, and Rune was to give a magical reason if there was one. When an LED actually exploded, Ms. Rosenwald took the dress off and sat down, just as a lightbulb exploded. As Rune began her magical search, it appeared someone may have cursed Ms. Rosenwald and the magic she was shedding set things off. Rune suspected the extravagant diamond necklace the woman wore could be generating the reaction. As the woman grabbed her necklace in a nervous gesture when the phone blew up, Rune saw the invisible threads dim and move from under her hand. Rune nodded and said it was the diamond causing this, and the woman got furious, the threads turning an angry red, screaming that they were trying to take “him” from her. Things began flying around the room. Then Ms. Rosenwald attacked Rune. Rune slapped the woman to shock her and was able to pull the amulet from her neck. She slammed it to the floor and when it finally cracked, the power went out of it. And she told Ms. Rosenwald someone had put a love curse on her, a highly illegal form of magic under mind-control laws. So she urged her to open a case with the Magic Guild for trial. Rune said she would type up her report about all this before she left and asked for a private office with a computer. Once alone, she began to hack her way into the computer system.
Rune Leveau now works her magic under the title of the Digital Mage. She intends to find her freedom from the corporations who want to use her. She is under scrutiny from St. Benedict, who still has guilt over how his actions betrayed Rune, aka Anna Masterson. He had hired her for what would be an impossible job, but he had developed strong feelings for her. Will he decide to make amends and help her now in her bid for freedom? Or will he do what his job demands of him? And what will the appearance of her ex-husband mean? If Justin knows Rune is alive and Rune knows he is alive, and if he is working with Kodiak, things just got worse for Rune. How will they save Jasmeen? Or has it all been a lie and it wasn’t Justin she saw alive? Grab your copy and try to figure it all out as so much is happening at a blistering pace! How will these multiple situations be resolved?
Our hero and heroine are having a rough patch, what with the betrayal and all. The real question is whether that is going to define things going forward or if there is a way to make amends. An interesting decision lies ahead.
This is book four of the Lucky Devil series. The story does pretty well as a standalone. You will be missing some of the backstory, but all the essential bits are covered early on.
This is something of a science fiction/urban fantasy story. We have a high tech future with supernaturals, so make of that what you will. The story is well written, easy to read and very engaging. Between the detailed setting where nothing is quite as it seems and the diverse characters that bring a lot of color to the story, there is never a dull moment. Frankly, I found it quite hard to put down, always needing to read one more page to see what happened next. Overall, a very enjoyable story and I hope to see more in this series.
Highly recommended.

Book 4, it might help to read the first book to grasp a better insight behind Rune's character motivation and her relationship with St Benedict. Nonetheless, the story works as a standalone. After everything Rune has gone through, she needs to rebuild her friendships and relationships. The story features plenty of action and romance.

This had everything that I enjoyed from the previous three books in this series. It had the elements that I enjoyed and was glad it was so well written. The characters continued to feel like the same people and belonged in this world. I was glad I got to read this and had the same great writing style.
