I need more of my friends to read this book so we can talk about what a sh*tbag Aaron is. I know Señora Thompson is the villain in Berta's eyes for sure, but I HATE Aaron (complimentary to the author) so very much.
Señora Thompson: I'm going to exploit the f*ck out of you for the promise of money but be a b*tch the whole time and withhold the money and call you a wh*re and a scammer and act like a victim.
Aaron: I love you so much and it would be great if you could do all of the things you were doing for my mom but just do them for me now and also give me all of your money and never give me sh*t about my bad decisions and the fact that I'm a complete piece of sh*t because you just don't know how hard it is to be a spoiled little *sshole and don't I deserve some happiness?? I think it's so sweet you miss your daughter because you have a good heart and that's what I love about you but holding me to my promises really kills my buzz.
This new book is so amazing, unique and engrossing! We finally have a true perspective from the fictional character who is usually just glossed over, barely mentioned or somehow used as a speechless victim of unspeakable acts that we hear about every day, but NEVER hear from or about the person who endured the cruelty. Berta is both an everywoman and an individual with dreams, courage, confusion and most of all tenacious hope. You will cry for her, root for her and cheer for her, but you will never feel sorry for her. She’s just too brave for that!
I love when a poet writes a novel! This is the beautiful and haunting story of Berta, a young immigrant mother trying to make the best choices for herself and her young daughter. When she comes to America to work to bring money back home, the woman she works for screws her over and takes advantage of her. Without the proper resources and education, Berta finds herself in complicated situations over and over. Sometimes this novel is incredibly stressful to read but it's an important story.
