Πώς ξαναχτίζεται η αξιοπιστία μιας χώρας που έφτασε στο χείλος του γκρεμού;

Ο Αλέξης Πατέλης, Προϊστάμενος του Οικονομικού Γραφείου του Πρωθυπουργού (2019 -2024), αφηγείται εκ των έσω τη «μεγάλη επιστροφή» της Ελλάδας: από τα capital controls και τη διεθνή αμφισβήτηση, μια ανάσα από τον διεθνή εξοστρακισμό, μέχρι την ανάκτηση της επενδυτικής βαθμίδας. Ένα βιβλίο για τις ιδέες, τους ανθρώπους, τα σωστά και τα λάθη που διαμόρφωσαν μια ιστορική πενταετία· και μια μαρτυρία για το πώς οι αγορές πείθονται μέσα από σταθερή συνέπεια.

Χωρίς εξωραϊσμούς, αλλά με την πεποίθηση ότι «η Ελλάδα μπορεί», αυτή είναι η συγκλονιστική ματιά ενός τεχνοκράτη που έζησε από μέσα ιστορικά γεγονότα – και απαντά στο ερώτημα που τέθηκε από τον διεθνή τύπο: «Πώς τα καταφέρατε;»

While the book's subject is inherently interesting, what surprised me positively is the writing style. Economics is often called the 'dismal science' but Alexis Patelis does a great job of telling the story of how economic policy is conducted at real time. I bought the book for Christmas and read it in less than three days. Alexis is witty, thorough, and relateable. Restoring Greece's reputation at global markets was definitely not an easy tasks and there is no doubt that the author's involvement was vital. From an economic policy perspective, my key takeaway is that having a clear and coherent narrative is essential to convince global investors. You have to repeat the same narrative again and again, and ensure your actions align with what you preach.

The reason why I am giving 4* (instead of 5*) of the treatment of some big failures of the government (like OPEKEPE, competition policy & market power, etc). It is not that anyone expects an objective account (which Patelis acknowledges), but I believe that too little space is given to them when they are mentioned. Alexis Patelis is clearly a very smart economist and most of his analysis is quite thorough, which is exactly what exacerbates how bad the superficial treatment of these topics is.

In any case, I highly recommend this book and I consider myself a fan of Mr Patelis. If he starts his newsletter again, he should let us know this time:)

Greece's very recent history in a few pages. You start by thinking you are about to read a book about the financial aspects of the last 10 years in Greece, but it is actually much more than this. Indeed, is is about economics, but it is also about politics, society, history, values. It is also about strategy, planning, hard work and results. The more you read the more you discover the numerous elements of the book. Using in a language that is easy for everyone to follow, the writer takes us with him in a journey in the very recent past, reminding us of the milestones Greece has lived through in the last decades and putting things into perspective. A powerful flashback that marks a great achievement, a period hat surely will continue being a financial and political success story to be shared with and taught to the younger generations. It is insightful, educational and enjoyable at the same time. Highly recommended.

Μια εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα μαρτυρία του πώς η Ελλάδα κέρδισε την αξιοπιστία της στις διεθνείς αγορές, που ισορροπεί την οικονομική ανάλυση και την προσεκτική εκλαΐκευση της οικονομίας με προσωπικά στιγμιότυπα, χιούμορ και άμεση πρωτοπρόσωπη αφήγηση. Πολύ ευχάριστο για τον αναγνώστη, ο οποίος κατά την διάρκεια της σχεδόν μυθιστορηματικής αφήγησης μαθαίνει πολλά για το πώς λειτουργούν οι διεθνείς αγορές, τι συμβαίνει σε μεγάλα χρηματοοικονομικά συνέδρια και φόρουμ, πώς οικοδομείται ένα οικονομικό σχέδιο και πώς προσαρμόζεται απέναντι σε αναπάντεχες κρίσεις, από την πανδημία μέχρι την εισβολή στην Ουκρανία.

The book was not what I expected. It was actually amazingly interesting. Although someone might be expecting a book with financial analysis etc the book comes alive in your imagination as it written like a novel. Combined with a glossary of acronyms and definitions, the reader does not need a background in economics.
I was really triggered by the copies of actual Newsletters that the author was sending to investors during his assignment next to the Primeminister of Greece. Those alone tell the story of Greece from 2019 up to 2024.

Όλοι όσοι κρίνουν με ευκολία το έργο της παρούσας κυβέρνησης οφείλουν να διαβάσουν αυτό το βιβλίο. Θα δουν καθαρά το πραγματικό μέγεθος των προκλήσεων και το βάθος της λεπτομέρειας και τεχνογνωσίας που χρειάστηκε για να αντιμετωπιστούν προβλήματα πολύ πιο σύνθετα απ’ όσο αφήνουν να εννοηθούν οι εύκολες φωνές της δημόσιας συζήτησης. Συγχαρητήρια για ένα βιβλίο καλογραμμένο, σκληρά δουλεμένο και απολύτως διαφωτιστικό, καθώς και για την ομάδα που με κόπο και σοβαρότητα αναβάθμισε ουσιαστικά τη χώρα.

Μια ώριμη και ουσιαστική μαρτυρία για το πώς η Ελλάδα επανατοποθετήθηκε στον διεθνή οικονομικό χάρτη. Ένα βιβλίο που καταφέρνει να ενημερώνει χωρίς να κουράζει. Μια ανάγνωση που αφήνει τον αναγνώστη όχι μόνο πιο ενημερωμένο, αλλά και πιο συνειδητοποιημένο για το πώς η αξιοπιστία, η συνέπεια και η στρατηγική χτίζονται βήμα-βήμα σε διεθνές οικονομικό επίπεδο.

Αρκετα μεροληπτικός μεν, σίγουρα έμπειρος δε, ο Πατέλης έγραψε ένα βιβλίο που αν εξαιρέσεις τις μεγάλες «κοιλιές» και το ανυπόφορο γλύψιμο στο Μητσοτάκη έχει ένα μικρό ενδιαφέρον . Δεν γίνεσαι σοφότερος πάντως , αυτά μας τα είπε και ο Πορτοσάλτε κατά καιρούς 😉
