The Tuesday Club Murders and Other Stories

Rate this book
Follow the ingenious mysteries of the ‘Tuesday Night Club’ with this hardback special edition of Agatha Christie’s complete Miss Marple short stories.THE ORIGINAL WEEKDAY MURDER CLUB

‘Well,’ said Joyce, ‘it seems to me we are a pretty representative gathering. How would it be if we formed a Club? What is today? Tuesday? We will call it The Tuesday Night Club. It is to meet every week, and each member in turn has to propound a problem. Some mystery of which they have personal knowledge, and to which, of course, they know the answer.’

Two years before The Murder at the Vicarage, Agatha Christie first introduced the world to Jane Marple and the stories of murder and intrigue told by each member of the Tuesday Night Club. Time and time again, crimes so wicked they have confounded even Scotland Yard’s finest are solved by St Mary Mead’s sharpest mind and everyone’s favourite armchair detective.

The Quiet Art of Solving Everything

I picked up The Tuesday Club Murders already firmly converted to team Miss Marple—and this collection only strengthened that loyalty. I’ve spent years admiring Hercule Poirot, but Marple has a way of quietly outclassing everyone. No flair, no drama—just sharp observation and a mind that refuses to miss anything.

The structure is simple but effective: a group of people exchanging unsolved mysteries like it’s a polite evening pastime. Each story is quick, varied, and just deceptive enough to make you feel clever—right before proving you’re not. Some you might crack, and those feel like small personal victories. The rest? They remind you who’s really in charge here.

What continues to impress me is Marple’s habit of linking everything back to her village. Yes, she does it every single time—and yes, you might think, “Alright, we get it.” But somehow, it still works. Those quiet parallels reveal more about human nature than any dramatic deduction ever could. She doesn’t chase the mystery; she understands people—and the mystery gives itself up.

Agatha Christie clearly enjoys staying one step ahead of her readers. Just when you think you’ve understood her rhythm, she changes it. Just when you feel confident, she pulls the rug out—again and again. And honestly, that’s the real joy of it. You don’t just read these stories—you get outplayed by them, politely and brilliantly.

Review:

This was a fun collection of Miss Marple Stories. I really enjoyed most of them with their combination of witty observations and twisty murders plots.

Favourite quotes:

"'I mean,' said Miss Marple, puckering her brow a little as she counted the stitches in her knitting, 'that so many people seem to me not to be either bad or good, but simply, you know, very silly.'" (3%)

"'Everybody is very much alike, really. But fortunately, perhaps, they don't realize it.'" (26%)

"Everybody harboured feelings of annoyance. It was all very well for Jane to be so beautiful - but at this moment everyone felt that stupidity could be carried too far. Even the most transcendent loveliness could not excuse it." (56%)

How could it be any less than 5 stars?!

What a joy to have so many of Miss Marple's short stories together. No matter how many times I read Agatha Christie I'm continually surprised by the elegance of her plots & the precision of the characters. Short stories are a difficult form to get the balance right but AC was able to do it without sacrificing tension or characterisation. A pure masterclass.

A great collection

Yet another collection of short stories from the Queen of Crime. 20 well written, well plotted, tales of murder, featuring Miss Marple, who despite her occasional rambling hits the nail on the head every time, solving mysteries that have everyone else baffled.

I'd read most of the stories in this collection before but I nonetheless enjoyed reading them again.

I'd read some, but not all, of these stories before but they were still enjoyable to re-read.

A bit twee but good escapism.

What is there to say?

This book contains the usual Agatha Christie offerings. That is to say some of her brilliant short stories. What a writer she was!
