Warhammer: The Old World

Arcane Journal: The War of Settra's Fury

Rate this book
Settra the Imperishable is roused to anger by the audacity of Bretonnia, launching a war of vengeance in response to their disrespect. His undead legions march to reclaim land they believe belongs to them, while the Dwarfen Mountain Holds, Kingdom of Bretonnia, and the Empire of Man fight valiantly to protect their territory.

This supplement explores the Tomb Kings of Khemri, Empire of Man, Kingdom of Bretonnia, and Dwarfen Mountain Holds in greater detail, including additional rules to help you get the most out of them in games of Warhammer: The Old World. It includes expanded lore, describing the vengeful wars launched by Settra's forces in the Border Princes. You will find rules to depict the clash of vanguard forces in mountain passes, and new options for Tomb Kings of Khemri mounts and incantations. The supplement includes two Armies of Infamy – one combining the Empire of Man and Kingdom of Bretonnia, and another for the Dwarfen Mountain Holds, enabling you to field a horde of Slayers. There are also additional rules that allow players of all armies to engage in smaller skirmish-sized games of Warhammer: The Old World.

Within this 48-page softback supplement book, you will find:

– Death in the Border Princes: A retelling of the wars waged by Settra's undead legions, including their passage through the Vaults, broken into smaller raiding parties.

– Battle March: A new set of rules for playing small skirmish-level games, representing vanguard forces clashing in confined quarters.

– Expanded Tomb Kings of Khemri rules: Guidelines for using new mounts and incantations in your armies.

– Armies of Infamy: Rules to field a unique Renegade Crowns army, as well as a unique Dwarfen Mountain Holds Slayer Host.

This Arcane Journal campaign book continues the narrative of Settra’s invasion of the Boarder Princes that began in the Bretonnian and Tomb Kings books.

The lore section of the book does a good job of continuing the narrative of the campaign that the previous Arcane Journals started, as well as fleshing out the history of the Boarder Princes themselves and the settlements of the Vaults mountain range. There are also a few nice pieces about some of the most prominent leaders in the Border Princes, along with information on their heraldry and the composition of their armies, which is helpful for theming collections.

The model photography in the book is as good as normal for Old World Publication and the artwork is also great. The illustrations of the Boarder Princes heraldry is also good, as are the usual maps of the areas the action takes place in.

The main addition to the rules that this Arcane Journal brings is Battle March, a small scale style of play similar to Combat Patrol for Warhammer 40,000 and Spearhead for Age of Sigmar that allows players to replicate the skirmishes in the mountain paths of the Vaults. Unlike those other small-scale games, however, this one allows you to build your own armies which is a lot better.

As well as this new scale of gaming, there are also some additions to the Tomb Kings army in the form of a new mount and a new winged version of the Warsphinx, both of which seem quite good. The Tomb Kings also get some new one-use spells that add a bit more magical clout to the Mortuary Cult. In addition to this there are also two new Armies of Infamy. The first is al the Human Realms Renegade Crowns army that draws upon units from both the Empire and Bretonnian factions, along with some of their own, to represent the mercenary forces that operate in the Boarder Princes and the Vaults, and has a number of new units to fill it’s ranks. This is a very interesting army that is the closest thing the game has to a full Dogs of War mercenary army at the moment at it interests me a lot as I always liked the Dogs of War in past editions of Warhammer. The other army is the Dwarfen Mountain Holds Slayer Host, anther army that I had been hoping would get rules as Slayers are a great part of their faction. This army also gets the Brotherhood of Grimnir, a regiment of elite Slayers who run and protect the shrines dedicated to their Ancestor God. All of these new armies, rules and units seem to be good and give players some nice conversion and theming potential.
