HELLEBORE's first short story anthology features nine new tales by contemporary masters of the supernatural and the strange: Nina Antonia, Ramsey Campbell, Steve Duffy, Helen Grant, Verity Holloway, Eóin Murphy, Reggie Oliver, Steve Toase, and Ally Wilkes.
Set in some of the most beguiling locations in The Hellebore Guide to Occult Britain and Northern Ireland, inspired by their history and folklore, this collection sweeps the reader away into a world of old gods, strange rituals, sinister faeries, hill figures, shadowy churches, vast forests and rugged coastlines—the magical, mystical world of HELLEBORE.
Contents: Preface. Funeral at St Botolph’s, by Reggie Oliver. Night Exercises, by Verity Holloway. King of the Island, by Steve Duffy. The Seeds of Time, by Helen Grant. More Than a Sign, by Ramsey Campbell. Pollen, by Steve Toase. Swain’s Lane, by Nina Antonia. Lake of Sorrows, by Eóin Murphy. Wild Edric’s Ride, by Ally Wilkes.
It's not surprise to me that my two favorite stories are written by Reggie Oliver and Ramsey Campbell, but the remaining stories are pretty awesome as well. More to come shortly on this one; for now, I'm extremely happy to have discovered this book, which I had trouble putting down.
Ally Wilkes and her Wild Hunt has just broken me. Can we actually call Eadric down to sort out the darkness? Loved this story and how it challenges notions of Englishness and raging prejudice. This, Reggie Oliver’s occultish Wind in the Willows-esque tale at St Botolphs church and Ramsey Campbell’s Wirral wanderings with the stone carvings and the disappearing man all shone for me!
