The Eldritch Knight

Rate this book
One tragic night shattered a kingdom. In the birthing chamber, a darkness older than time reached through the veil, faltering the magic meant to save a queen. Grief consumed King Aldric Ravenmark, but the shadow fed that grief into fear—and fear into law. Magic was outlawed. Its wielders silenced. The realm ruled by dread.

Years later, two lives rise against that reign. One, a boy marked at birth with a sigil from a time before the kingdom. The other, a girl driven by vengeance and the desperate search for her imprisoned mother. Their paths move ever closer to the throne and to the darkness that commands it.

Set in a world where myth bleeds into memory, The Eldritch Knight begins an epic saga of loss and discovery, vengeance and destiny. It is the first entry in The Ashen Throne Saga, an expansive fantasy universe exploring the cost of power, the burden of legacy, and the light that endures even in ruin.

The Main course
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Bussard’s novella, The First Glimpse, offers a peak into this Kingdom and the map that is ventured throughout The Eldritch Knight (TEK).

The tale is written with a heavily poetic prose, perfect for those who enjoy a nice chunky fantasy story full of good plot and layered development. I’d say for those who enjoy books like The Name of the Wind, or even Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, prepare yourself for this well-written debut that clearly sets the stage to a much larger story that will surely play out over many good books of equal and greater measure.

*Light Spoilers*
TEK begins with a world full of magic and wonder. Many of the streets filled with vendors and entertainers, the towns feel lived in, and the people seems genuinely happy. Sadly, this doesn’t last long as the king’s rule sours. Witch hunts soon begin crippling comforts, and before long innocent blood spills as the king’s brooding devolves too far.

In the main plot, the book delivers a coming-of-age-tale of both a young boy (Caelan) and young girl (Lysandra) as they navigate very different paths. It is the reader’s assumption by the end these paths are destined to eventually meet.

Caelan, clearly marked for a unique destiny with a sigil upon his chest, must overcome several obstacles between sword and sorcery. His arc is enjoyable but it does leave quite a bit for the book to pick up on in the coming sequels. I have a feeling book 2 will have far more action involving this character. For now, expect quite a bit in the development stage of his skills. The book does not shy away from how he becomes what he must.

I honestly enjoyed Lysandra’s arc a bit more. Her story led me to cheer for her, and by the end I actually wanted to know more about her than Caelan (sorry Caelan). Her story begins with the king’s unjust persecution, leaving her orphaned and to fend as a starving teenager in the woods. The character development of Lysandra shines as she has to overcome learning basic survival skills, travels as a homeless orphan, and yet, soon finds herself training at the hands of the very ones who took everything from her in order to correct the injustice being levied on the kingdom.
Overall, I was impressed with the level of writing in the book. The prose is very well done. It may be too poetic for those seeking fast-paced action and little story, but overall it made for a wonderfully enjoyable read for me.

I do wish there were more magic battles like the one in beginning, however, I know this is the first book with more to come. I fully expect the author to deliver even more payoffs in coming sequels, given he’s already shown an insanely powerful moment in the first few pages of the book.
If you’re down for a great story written and crafted a beautiful prose, give The Eldritch Knight a try.

As a longtime D&D fan, this story hit all the right notes for me.

Don't let the striking cover, intriguing title, or epic opening fool you. This is very much a character-development-driven first book in a series. It takes time to build relationships, inner conflicts, and motivations. I personally loved that approach, especially knowing it is kicking off The Ashen Throne Saga. If you are expecting non-stop action from page one, it might feel slower than anticipated. For me, that deliberate pacing was necessary and welcome.

Bussard's prose is a standout here. It is rich, evocative, and beautifully layered without ever feeling overwritten. The language carries a mythic weight that draws you deep into the world and its characters. This makes even quiet moments feel vivid and resonant. It is the kind of writing that lingers and rewards close attention. It especially rewards patient readers who savor atmosphere and emotional depth.

Bussard created a world that I want to see more of. I'm genuinely excited for what's next. Highly recommended for fans of thoughtful, character-rich epic fantasy.

Amazing character development, world-building, great story telling with a constant flow and subtle plot twists, a stunning debut novel by K. Bussard.

The best part is how the story begins, which has a hook from the start, and how it switches between characters, building tension, and shocking moments and twists, numerous surprises that can only get better with each book.

A must read for 2026, this debut novel highlights qualities that most authors lack, the author is a true wordsmith who is constantly trying to keep his readers on their toes.

Ah, starting the year with a fantasy. It is not just a fantasy, though, I think we have a legendary series on our hands here.

I think this book had me at 'The Sky was cracked'.
It started with a bang, and there is a great deal of action throughout.
You see, a child is born... with a mark, no, a sigil from a time before the kingdom itself.

Yes, I read the blurb in a dramatic voice in my head. 😂

I followed the child, Caelan, curiously, through the years, one adventure after another.

And it does not end there. We also follow a girl at almost the same age, Lysandra. No extraordinary marks on her, moving from village to village. She will find herself in more danger than she could ever imagine.

One headed to The Elder Mountain, the other to the Lion's den where a king whose soul is shattered and his rule more dangerous than ever.
I am waiting, no longing, for their paths to cross.

🔹️
"There is something in the wind, it's shifting."
🔹️

Could it be dark forces at play?

Imagine a kingdom where those with magic have to hide it, where rumours alone can have you killed.
Also, I am wondering when we deal with the prolouge's challenges. In the next book, maybe?

I would love to learn to feel like Caelan, though.

K.W. has taken familiar elements while refining and renewing by the genius of his ability to balance the grit of his world with calm rationale and focus.

While there were a few times I got found myself getting distracted by the volume of the world building (not a bad thing, especially if you really like to get into the nooks and crannies of the topic location), the right amount of story drive and intended impact of a big moment kept the story engaging.

The magical system is well defined and allows you to feel like you're learning in time with the story. While there are a few similar themes to it, K.W. did well in adding the touches that made logical sense (giving the fantastic a solid grounding).

It felt like there was something new around the bend of each path, especially in large cities that had decades built into the foundations of their individual cultures.

This was a good read, best suited for those who need a big world, deep lore, and a balance forward momentum that allows for a few side quests along the way!

Well done, K.W.!
