Simms studied at Trinity College Dublin, where he was elected a scholar in history in 1986, before completing his doctoral dissertation, Anglo-Prussian relations, 1804-1806: The Napoleonic Threat, at Cambridge under the supervision of Professor Tim Blanning in 1993. A Fellow of Peterhouse, he lectures and leads seminars on international history since 1945

A perceptive analysis of global geopolitics which really opened my eyes to trends and patterns I hadn't noticed before. Some people will not like this because it is a straightforward presentation of great power dynamics, so if you really want to be negative about the West this won't be for you. I understood China and Russia, and indeed France better after reading this book. A valuable contribution to world history in the 21st century.
