The Pixie Effect

Rate this book
An entertaining otherworldly tale with a dynamic and unforgettable cast.
In this fantasy, young pixies struggle to survive in a forest of mythical beings.
Before the Age of Mankind, pixies were “plentiful” on Earth. Now, the hummingbird Atel, once a fairy in another age, wants to bring pixies back. She gathers dust and gossamer that she weaves into chrysalises, and soon a trio of pixie babes is ready to hatch—Airy, Lolly, and Poo. But dangers are quickly apparent, starting with the trolls in the wooded area near where the pixies are safely nested. Trolls consider pixies a delicacy. And then there’s Troll-Mother Ishi—who’s actually a witch—who craves pixie wings for something magical and sinister. Atel does what she can to protect the pixies, which becomes taxing after the three hatch. Mischievous pixies are notorious for brazenly taunting trolls. Meanwhile, the trio faces such powerful adversaries as shape-shifting witches (“The familiarity between a witch and her fox…was never between two separate creatures but simply the witch herself at different times of the day”). But there’s a bevy of mythical creatures and forest animals, some of whom prove to be the pixies’ allies. Deters’ tautly written novel is great fun, especially the interactions between Atel and the not-so-bright trolls. But exhilarating perils abound, as someone manages to capture Airy, Lolly, and Poo. In addition, the three pixies and Atel set out on a mission to retrieve items that Ishi stole and end up exploring a dark, rat-filled cave. The superb cast includes the pixie trio; the chef and beer-brewing troll Jag the Juggler; and Atel, a loving and whip-smart “nanny” who’s perpetually unruffled even in the most precarious circumstances. The narrative also provides surprisingly riveting backstories for a few of the supporting characters. Nevertheless, Ishi’s tale is the best—how she was essentially discarded, developed her magic, and became the Troll-Mother. Although this book is a stand-alone, the author’s world of personable creatures could lead to a series or a number of spinoffs.

Review KIRKUS INDIE

Evening settled over the pine woods with the pixies asleep in their chrysalises. The hummingbird waited by the hidden nursey for the inevitable fire to flare up nearby on a bare, rocky knob of the hill. Unpleasant neighbors would be arriving soon.

Trolls were known primarily for three things, she reminded Felonies, misdemeanors, and bonfires – in no particular order. Tonight they would roast some large critter on the spit and break out a huge tub of fresh home brew. The only thing missing might be a sweet pixie dessert to top it off, but the idea would occur to them.

It would be her job to keep that recipe unfilled.

Born 8/22/1946 and raised on a working farm, a great way to grow up.

Graduated from Spring Grove (MN) High School in spring, 1964. Happiest day of my life, to that point. School bored me silly--especially English class, particularly grammar. Nitpicking stuff! Let's get on with the real world! So I did.

'65 through '71: Partner in a logging business and Marine Corps Reserves, mostly.

1970: Married the prettiest girl I ever saw. We had a brief romance with just one formal date--she came and hauled me off to church one Sunday morning, thinking I needed it.

We bought our own farm in December, 1971 and the next 30 years were filled with good luck. We raised 3 great kids and had a good life until her luck ran out. We lost her in '01 and this world lost more of what it's already short of: Perfect honesty and grace.

Turned most of the farming business over to our 2 sons in recent years. I'm a tree farmer now, and their hired man. Gives me more spare time to write stories.

I started writing around 1982 but never published anything. After '01 I began to look at it more seriously and eventually finished 'The Butterflies'. It was a different experience compared to other stories I've written. Yero and Boca had an independent streak. Some days they just laughed at my plans for them and went their own way. It was a scramble, keeping up. Think of them as 9 year old kids, and you've got it.

My only message to a new reader would be: You'll like these guys, but take a deep breath if you expect to fly with monarchs.

This was a well written book. I enjoyed it the author made it very funny and cool. I couldn't put it down till I finished reading it. I love the reading about the pixies, and how they slept at night. I found this interesting. The story was creative and full imagination.
The book kept me fascinated. I couldn't put it down.

Then when the trolls came, it seemed like trouble was brewing between it and them. I hope that thing would work out, and the peace would stay. I hope that it would stay safe, and keep it under everything that happens it would work out in a peaceful way. The author made the story interesting, I thought it was an awesome story.

I give this story a 5 star read. I hope to hear more from the author. I give this story a 5-star rating. This was an excellent read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The only pixie character I can think of is Tinkerbell, who is very famous on her own, so I was curious enough about this book as I haven’t really seen many fantasy stories revolving these creatures. I always thought of mystical creatures getting along and facing together an outside enemy so it was interesting to see a story develop with such animosity between fairy folk and trolls.

Starting with Atel all the way through Ishi, each character was quite unique and the story felt so fresh and new. This war between such tiny and large creatures was actually quite fun to read. I liked how the story changes between moments of tranquility and uproarious chaos.

I don’t think this is meant to be directed to children really, but more towards curious young adults. With that in mind, I can see more stories set in this world developing and look forward to them!

This was so whimsical and fun to read! The fairies were quite funny and the hummingbird as their nanny was so cute. Certain parts were really funny like the fermented grapes and the beer making scene were probably my favorites. It reads kind of like a fable with little life lessons along the way with bits of trickery. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a whimsical book like if you miss the pixie hollow books from childhood and want something more this is definitely a good option. I really wish there had been illustrations too like in a storybook. I think that would have been so fun to have included. I also wish the chapters were shorter but the overall length of the book was good in regards to the plot.

“The Pixie Effect” by Allen Pud Deters is a wonderful fantasy story that leaves you hoping for more books from the author in the future. Deters world of pixies and trolls takes you into a world that feels similar to Fern Gully and the Trolls movies from Dream Works. The trolls, however, turn out to be vile creatures who live a glutton lifestyle and like to feast on the pixies as “desserts” to their giant feasts they throw. It is the job of a hummingbird to protect the pixies from being eaten by the nasty trolls. This otherworldly fantasy is a joy to read. I hope to see more of these stories from the author in the future. My daughter and I both liked this book.

“The Pixie Effect” by Allen (Pud) Deters is an imaginative and intriguing story in a fantastical world filled with vibrant characters and magical elements. Deters’ description of the trolls along with their notorious reputation kept my imagination flowing and fit well with how I would picture trolls to really be like. The language used is evocative and descriptive, which was a fantastic aid in scene setting. The apposition of the peaceful pixies and the rowdy trolls creates a sense of anticipation for what might unfold next in the story. This book overall was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it.

This book is a fun take on pixies, magical creatures, and the fantasy genre. The author, Deters creates a world full of intrigue and otherworldly creatures. The diction the author uses accomplishes his purpose, and he introduces us to a talking hummingbird, pixies, trolls, and other things that the magical world has to offer. This is not just a retelling of any other story or folktale, but rather, it is an original piece imagined and brought to life by the author’s narrative. I found it full of action and the story moved along very well. The characters were well developed and dynamic. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the fantasy genre. This book is a fun read!

A cute story full of imagination
A story about little fairies called pixies that were sent to the world to spy on trolls, goblins, and other dark figures. When the trolls arrive they begin to master the place, but finally, they lose the challenge to the hummingbird so they have to leave. The importance of this book is in the way the author used the imagination to create so many different creatures, some that attract everyone and others that go to the other extreme, he also uses the alienation of other figures to achieve liberation. of the pixies. A novel full of action and very fun.

"The Pixie Effect" is guaranteed to grab your attention from the cover through the last page. The illustrations are perfect, the story is just right for nearly all ages, and once you get to know which character is which, you'll understand the plot quickly. Pixies are mischievous nocturnal creatures who are also the favorite food of trolls. However, with a tenuous hope of peace on the fringes, the pixies continue to frolic and play. When that hope is dashed, our favorite pixies must face their deadly enemies and come up with a way to keep their pixie life safe.

Although titled on pixies, the central character of this book is a little humming bird who uses her wit, hard work, and presence of mind to give life to pixie babies, nanny them, and safeguard them from various dangers, most notably trolls and rats. Pixies can be handful and pixie babies especially so. This endearing book shows how the clever and empathic humming bird tolerated all their tantrums while doing her best to raise them right in an unfriendly environment. The book will be a good gift for young children.

It feels like the author is taking the reader on a journey with the characters. The dialogue between the pixies is so captivating and compelling. I was a bit confused trying to follow the characters in the beginning. I haven’t come across many books on pixies but this was quite a pleasant surprise.

Imaginative folklore

The author has a great imagination. This folklore story has every character teenagers would enjoy, fairies, trolls, a witch that is nocturnal who becomes a fox at sunrise, pixies who know how to survive, plus more characters.

My only FYI for parents is the alcohol use and gambling.
