Or, so she believed.

Spoilt from birth, she became consumed with greed, until the untimely disappearance of her father and his wife.

Thrust into a life of politics and intrigue, she refuses to be used as a political pawn by her interfering grandfather. Punished for her disobedience, she is forced into a marriage with the notorious pirate – Captain Kit Allaway.

Known for her illegal activities, and flirtatious nature, the captain is a force to be reckoned with. Not even the newly appointed Sheriff of Veilly can catch her! Protected by her mysterious patron, the Duchess of Ruxley, Kit is untouchable – and she knows it.

But all is not what it seems. People will lie and cheat to get what they want, especially when a mighty treasure is on the line.

This is a steamy sapphic Robin Hood Retelling, which is part of an on-going series. Want to know more? Check out book one - The Grizzling Princess and Her Knight.

Amy creates magic with her writing that nobody else can, this series is something I love so much and will cherish forever.
This Sapphic Robin Hood retelling is so much better than the original, Kit is an absolute heartthrob and should be the new standard every woman desires, She is super caring, one of those characters that puts everyone else above themselves no matter the consequences, she’s amazing. Freddie is the lady in need of rescuing from the evil that is the men of the world, their lack of understanding of the word “NO” as well as their desperation. Freddie wants nothing to do with men, she wants someone who replicates the love interests in the books she reads, luckily her outlaw in a corset is right there when she is needed most.
I loved the fairies in this book, we meet Pearl (Tealas best friend) as well as Bumble and Badger Briarwell, the cutest fairies in the entire world who I love to pieces. The fairies just give the book a sparkle, their little giggles, how they act, how they shine, just who they are, they are so magical and beautiful and really help the magic of the universe come to life.
I also loved the vibe of Kits pirate crew, they were perfect, a perfect pirate crew, they were truly a family and were so respectful and supportive, every interaction they had was just so sweet, you could see how much they cared about each other, and also how much they respected Kit. Obviously pirates are supposed to respect their captain, but these guys owed Kit, because she saved them, they were all in need and she gave them everything they needed, like it was nothing. The crew of The Hollow Serpent were a found family, they respected each other and were a team, they helped anyone who needed it, and they helped the best they could, they all mucked in and didn’t shy away from a challenge.
The love story of Kit and Freddie is obviously one for the ages, one readers will never forget, one they should hope to have themselves one day. The way they constantly called each other “Wife” so happily was adorable and I constantly smiled every single time it was said, they were so proud to be married to each other, even though they didn’t get married in the best of circumstances, they truly were the most romantic most loving and respectful couple ever. I remember in the first half where Freddie was trying to resist, and Kit was so respectful of that, even though inside Freddie didn’t want to resist, and Kit definitely didn’t. The amount of respect and love they had was truly just everything I want for myself. I loved this book big time. I truly love this series, like so seriously, I want to be IN fairyland myself.

The Troublesome Lady and Her Outlaw by Amy Burns

Lady Friedgard “Freddie” Fitzwater was raised on the belief that she was destined to break a family curse, but the sudden disappearance of her father leaves her stranded in a world of cutthroat politics instead. Refusing to be a pawn for her manipulative grandfather, Freddie is forced into a strategic marriage with the most dangerous woman on the high seas: Captain Kit Allaway. As a flirtatious pirate protected by a mysterious duchess and hunted by the law, Kit is as untouchable as she is charming. However, as the two women navigate their unwanted union, they discover that in a world of lies and hidden treasures, the greatest danger –and the greatest reward– is the bond growing between them.

The Troublesome Lady and Her Outlaw by Amy Burns is an absolute gem of a find –a fantasy that blends the sharp wit of a Regency comedy of manners with the high-octane adventure of a pirate romance. From the moment I stepped aboard The Hollow Serpent, I was completely swept away by the magic of the world and the undeniable chemistry between Kit and Freddie. TTLAHO will leave you laughing one minute and reaching for the tissues the next, all while rooting for a crew of outcasts who have truly become a family.

Freddie is far from the mild, “goody two-shoes” main character found in many fantasy books. She reminded me of Jane Austen’s Emma –a perfect combination of sharp wit and a big heart. One of the most interesting aspects of her portrayal is that she is never physically described beyond being beautiful. With no specific features mentioned in the text or character art, she becomes a vessel for the reader to project their imagination. Freddie has zero patience for the entitled men of her world; she craves the kind of epic, respectful love found in her favorite books, and she finds exactly that in Kit.

Kit Allaway: she is the dreamiest of love interests, always toeing the line between referring to Freddie as “wife” or “trouble”. A reimagining of a fairytale outlaw, Kit is defined by her selflessness and a heart that puts everyone else first. Even though I’ve never “seen” her, her smirk remains seared into my brain forevermore.

The dynamic between Kit and Freddie is unforgettable: their constant, proud use of nicknames was absolutely swoon-worthy. What struck me most was the profound level of respect Kit showed. Even when Freddie was hesitant in the beginning, Kit never pushed; she was protective and patient, creating a foundation of consent that made their eventual connection so much more powerful.

I usually don’t like pirate stories, but this book is so well-balanced between land and sea that I didn't mind the nautical setting at all. The scenes aboard The Hollow Serpent were lovely, especially thanks to the found family atmosphere. The crew –Little Jay, Jun, and a certain priest, as well as the rest– isn't just a team; they are a family built on mutual support. You can feel the deep gratitude they have for Kit.

Adding to the book's sparkle were the fairies. Pearl, Bumble, and Badger Briarwell were the most precious additions to the story. Their presence, their giggles, and their magical energy really helped the universe come to life, making the world feel vibrant and cosy all at once.
The emotional arc of the story is powerful; I found myself laughing out loud and –I must admit– crying quite a bit too. The plot is packed with twists, several of which I genuinely didn’t smell coming.

Amy Burns has a way of creating magic with her prose that feels unique. While the book is a substantial read with deep world-building, it never felt like a chore. I haven’t yet read the companion book, The Grizzling Princess and Her Knight, but this story works perfectly as a standalone. You can feel the richness of the history and the kingdoms, but you aren't left confused if you're starting here.

Content Warning: For the non-spicy readers, there are three specific scenes in this book that you might want to skip. Other than those moments, I’d say you are absolutely safe to dive into this world. There are also a couple of scenes with non-consensual/dubious-consensual kissing, but nothing goes further than that.

This book was lovely. It is by no means a short read, but I think the world building was well done, you felt a connection to the main characters and the story was engaging.

What a woman Kit Allaway is. Forget book girlfriend, she is book wife material. Her crew was the best, a true found family.

I struggled a bit at the beginning to read consistently, but I think it’s because for the first time in my life I hit a reading slump, it probably won’t take you as long a me to finish the book.

Thank you to Amy Burns for providing me with an eARC, I’m looking forward to reading the previous book and next publications.

thank you to the author Amy Burns for the ARC! I was really charmed by this sapphic Robin Hood fairytale. A fun cast of characters here and a lot of action. The pacing was a little tumultuous but Captain Kit Allaway is such a compelling love interest that it literally doesn’t even matter. I would read a million books about Kit being the world’s best wife.

The Troublesome Lady and Her Outlaw by Amy Burns introduces an engaging premise with spirited characters and a classic outlaw romance vibe that shows promise. The story captures moments of charm and tension, particularly in the dynamic between the leads, hinting at potential for heartfelt connection. While the foundation is solid, some areas like pacing and character depth could benefit from further development to heighten emotional impact and immersion. The narrative has its enjoyable beats, but it didn't fully pull me in throughout.
Overall, a good book, with lots of potential, appealing ideas and room to evolve into something even stronger. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review
