Snowed in with the Highlander

Rate this book
I built walls to keep the world out. She tore them down with a single smile.
Three years ago, I lost my entire military team in an ambush I should have seen coming. Now I live alone in the Scottish Highlands, crafting furniture and avoiding human contact. It's not much of a life, but it's safe. Predictable. No one else gets hurt because of my mistakes.
Then Maisie Campbell crashes her car in my ditch during the worst blizzard in decades.
She's everything I can't afford to brilliant, brave, and beautiful enough to make me forget why I chose isolation. Her career is in ruins, her confidence shattered, but she sees beauty everywhere—including in a damaged ex-soldier who's forgotten how to trust himself.
When a mountain rescue forces us to work together, the walls I've spent three years building start to crumble. But loving Maisie means risking everything I've worked to protect. And when a career opportunity in Norway threatens to take her away, I have to fight for the woman who's brought light back into my darkness, or let her go before I destroy the best thing that's ever happened to me.
Some storms bring destruction. This one brought salvation—if I'm brave enough to claim it.

Skye MacDonald writes steamy contemporary romances that celebrate the rugged beauty and urban energy of Scotland. Under this pen name she explores love in all its forms—from off‑grid Highland cabins to glass‑walled penthouses overlooking Edinburgh Castle.

Her heroes range from gruff craftsmen and reclusive mountain men to charismatic billionaires; her heroines are curvy, creative women who refuse to settle for anything less than passion and partnership.

Skye’s reads are packed with tropes readers crave—forced proximity, grumpy‑sunshine dynamics, second chances and instalove—yet each story offers its own unique twist and emotional depth.

Writing is Skye’s second act after a decade in travel journalism, where she fell in love with the north’s wild landscapes and the capital’s thriving arts scene. That wanderlust now fuels her fiction.

When she isn’t writing, Skye can be found trekking along lochside trails, losing herself in Edinburgh’s bookshops, and sharing drams of whisky with her husband and two terriers. She believes there’s magic in every storm and starlit street—and her goal is to capture that magic on the page so readers can fall in love with Scotland right alongside her characters.

Some storms destroy everything in their path. Others find the pieces of you that have been buried for too long—and teach you how to start over. Snowed in with the Highlander is one of those rare stories that takes your breath away, not with drama or chaos, but with quiet, soul-deep emotion that sneaks up on you like sunrise over a frost-covered glen.

Finn has made a life out of silence. After losing his military team in a mission gone tragically wrong, he retreats to the Scottish Highlands, where the only sounds are the crackle of the fire and the echo of his regrets. He’s built his walls tall and solid—until Maisie Campbell crashes right through them in the middle of a snowstorm, quite literally landing in his life and refusing to leave it untouched.

Maisie is reeling from her own kind of loss—a career in photography on the brink, a confidence that’s slipping through her fingers. But even as she’s stranded in Finn’s world of isolation and ice, she somehow brings light and laughter back into it. She sees beauty where others see brokenness… especially in Finn.

Together, they thaw each other’s frozen hearts in the most tender, believable way. Their chemistry is soft, slow, and utterly consuming—the kind of connection that grows in the quiet moments: shared coffee, laughter in the glow of a fire, and the brush of fingers that says I see you.

Skye MacDonald paints the Highlands so vividly you can feel the snow beneath your boots and the heat of the hearth between scenes. But it’s the emotional landscape that truly shines—grief, guilt, hope, and redemption interwoven into a love story that feels timeless and real.

Finn and Maisie’s story isn’t just about falling in love—it’s about finding the courage to live again. And when the storm clears, you’re left believing that sometimes being snowed in isn’t an accident at all—it’s fate giving you a second chance.

Snowed In With The Highlander by Skye MacDonald is the first in the Glencoe Mountain Man series and also the first book I’ve read by this author. I decided to give it a try because I love the snowed-in trope, but I’m also very particular when it comes to stories set in Scotland. This one did not disappoint!

The author’s descriptions of the Highlands in winter were absolutely stunning—I could almost feel the crisp snow outside and the warmth of a fire crackling inside. The setting alone drew me in, but what truly captured my heart was the romance between Finn and Maisie. Finn, a former military man now working as a carpenter, and Maisie, a landscape photographer trying to redeem herself after a failed photo shoot, were both compelling and relatable. Their story was beautifully romantic, heartfelt, and touching.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Scottish settings, emotional depth, and a cozy snowed-in romance. I’m already looking forward to the next installment, Sheltered by The Highlander, where we’ll get to experience Neil and Sally’s happily-ever-after.
