The Spy Keeper of Marseille

Rate this book
In occupied France, a woman becomes a spy for the Resistance and rises to lead the largest intelligence operation in the country in this propulsive new World War II historical novel by bestselling author Roseanna M. White.

Marseille, France, 1941. Zelie Bellerose never fit the mold of an army officer’s wife. She was too passionate in her convictions, too indifferent to societal expectations. After her husband is killed in the war, Zelie focuses on securing a brighter future for her children, hoping to help free her country from the Nazi regime by joining the Resistance. She is soon one of the most trusted operatives in Alliance, and when their leader is imprisoned, she takes command, hiding her identity from all but a few. With enemies closing in, Zelie must earn the trust of her network and prove herself to those who doubt a woman’s place at the helm of France’s largest spy ring.

Marcel Laurent was a renowned concert pianist before joining the French army and being sent to a POW camp. Freed in a prisoner exchange by a wealthy businessman with ties to the Resistance, Marcel agrees to spy for Alliance by conducting a youth orchestra, gathering intelligence from patrons who are loose-lipped Nazi sympathizers. Marcel’s weekly radio broadcasts introducing the orchestra’s performances give him the perfect cover to send coded messages over the airwaves.

As Zelie and Marcel grow closer through their shared love of music, she begins to rely on him. But betrayal from within Alliance puts everything they’ve fought for at risk. When a double agent infiltrates their ranks and the two are captured, their bond faces its greatest test . . . and any misstep could jeopardize not only Alliance but the very outcome of the war.

I am a huge fan of Roseanna M. White and she is an automatic preorder author for me on Audible. I purchased and own this audiobook, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Spy Keeper of Marseille.

One of my favorite parts of this story was learning more about the French Resistance. Roseanna M. White brings this period of history to life while showing the courage, sacrifice, and danger faced by those who chose to stand against oppression.

I especially loved the characters of Zelie and Marcel. Watching their relationship develop throughout the story felt natural and rewarding. Their connection added an emotional depth that made me even more invested in what happened to them.

There were several intense moments that kept me listening and eager to discover what would happen next. The combination of historical detail, strong characters, and suspense made this a compelling and memorable read.

I highly recommend The Spy Keeper of Marseille to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, stories of the French Resistance, and beautifully developed characters.

This is an emotional story set in France during the Nazi occupation beginning in 1941. I felt the frustrations and pain that changes the lives of so many. Zelie Bellerose is an unlikely leader of a ring of spies who work behind the scenes to help MI6 know about what is going on with the Germans. This group deals with danger, betrayal, arrests, and execution for the cause of freeing their beloved France. Marcel Laurent was freed from a POW camp to organize a youth orchestra under the supervision of a Nazi SS officer. He and Zelie are drawn to each other under circumstances that could lead to pain. During this time, this stress of having to be so careful to keep secrets is palatable and adds tension to the read. This story is full of history, faith and the author used musical terms to show the mood of the scenes that lends a different dimension. Wonderful read.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review and these are my thoughts.

If you are like me, you probably love a great historical fiction set during WW2. WW1 and WW2 are some of my favorite eras for book settings, but that also means I've read countless stories from those eras. It can be hard to find something new.

Enter Roseanna M. White and her new novel The Spy Keeper of Marseille.
Set in the 1940s of the German occupation of France, we get to go behind the scenes with a spy ring called The Alliance. At the top of this ring is the widow Zelie--she has a passion for making sure that her children can grow up in a free France no matter the cost for herself. Carrying baggage from her failed first marriage, she is determined to only love her children for no one else will ever believe she is enough. Believing that she's called for a greater purpose than "just" being a wife, she throws herself into everything about the resistance. When her superior dies, she becomes the leader--and she's constantly worried that their British contacts will balk if they find out the leader is a woman...so she gives it her all.

Along the way, she's drawn to Marcel. Marcel is an incredile musician who just returned from being a POW--now being used by the Germans to inspire other French and Germans with the power of music. But he's determined to do his bit and joins Zelie's cause and agrees to feed messages using his freedom to broadcast live and travel extensively.

Their love is challenged by Zelie's reluctance to accept that she can love and BE loved for who she is in return. She also is in conflict with God because she feels like she knows best how things are supposed to be and continues to try to control every aspect of her life and those around her. But through worst case scenarios and being brought to the bottom of everything, Zelie learns to let go.

It's a great story for those who love spies and WW2 tales.

I didn't want to put it down, so I will give it 5 stars.

Roseanna M. White is one of my favorite authors, and The Spy Keeper of Marseille does not disappoint! It reminded me of Roseanna's other series The Codebreakers. The Spy Keeper of Marseille follows a female spy and a pianist who is newly recruited to the spy network. This book is a great mix of romance and twists and turns you will not expect. It kept me on my seat until the very end!

An inspirational story set in WWII France based on real history. Spanning the war years from 1941 to the end of German occupation in 1944, this epic tale shines a light on the people who rose up behind the scenes to fight in the French Resistance.

Full of human drama and set against the colorful backdrop of French culture, characters put their lives on the line, driven by their loyalty to family, friends and freedom. Faith enters in moments when the main characters are tested and betrayed. The pace picks up later as they are put in increasingly dangerous situations, and ultimately they look to God for strength and help.

There is an up and down romance that develops through many trials, and adds an extra element of risk to the plot. I liked how the characters bonded over their mutual love of music; it made for some bittersweet and touching scenes.

Recommend to fans of WWII stories with a character driven plot, some suspense and a clean romance. 4.5 stars

The Spy Keeper of Marseille by Roseanna M. White is a World War II historical fiction novel set in occupied France, following a female spy, Zélie Bellarose, and a former POW, Marcel Lauren, whose lives become increasingly connected through espionage work.

For me, the strongest part of this book is the middle and ending. That’s when the story finally feels like it settles into what it’s trying to be. The spy networks expand, the stakes rise, and Marcel’s role with coded musical broadcasts adds something more interesting and structured to the plot. Once the book moves into that phase, I found it much easier to stay engaged and understand where everything was heading.

The beginning didn’t work as well for me. It spends a lot of time on the relationship between the two main characters, but without enough tension or external pressure to balance it. I also felt like the occupied France setting wasn’t fully used early on in a way that created real risk or urgency. Because of that, the opening felt slower and more focused on personal dynamics than espionage.

As the story progresses, I did start to enjoy it more. The plot becomes more active, the different threads begin to connect, and the consequences of earlier events start to matter. I especially liked how Marcel’s storyline develops once he becomes more involved in the intelligence side of things, and how the network structure starts to come together.

Overall, I had mixed feelings. The book takes time to find its rhythm, and the early focus on relationships didn’t fully land for me, but I did find the later sections much more engaging and satisfying.

Thanks to NetGalley and Tyndale House Publishers for providing an advance copy.

Okay, okay, maybe I’ve just been fed expectations after reading so many Roseanna M. White books, but those expectations have been served on a silver platter by the author herself.
Idkkkk I just desired a bit more romantic tension. That’s a me problem, I know, but still!
I preordered a signed copy of this book and above her name, Mrs. White had scrawled “Be a shooting star.” And… well that stood out to me and it was a prominent theme in the book.
I loved how supportive Marcel was of Zelie. From beginning to end, he was her biggest supporter. Always there, always there encouraging her in all her dreams. Always making sure that those dreams were possible to achieve, no matter how many they were.
I also adored the well researched musical theme. As a choir kid, I enjoyed familiar phrases and such things that usually only people who’ve practiced music in one form of another would be familiar to. Often when authors write about music, they just scribble on about how their characters loved music and yaddy yatsah, but there’s never depth to that adoration. For Marcel and Zelie, that is a very different story.
Not gonna lie, I was glued to my seat the last third of the book. Things really began picking up and my attention was held hostage. And it was well worth delaying my day for.

So, I absolutely LOVE both of Roseanna M. White's series that take place during WWI. Her Shadows Over England series made me a fan, and I was thrilled when I learned that her Codebreakers series included beloved characters while introducing new ones. I loved that the reader would go from the beginning of WWI through the end of WWI by reading both series. And then last year I read The Collector of Burned Books which takes place in Occupied France during WWII. So, yes, when I learned that she had a new book that takes place during WWII, I was excited. And I am so glad I had a chance to read it, because I loved it.

The Spy Keeper of Marseille takes place mostly in Free France, though at the beginning of the book our FMC, Zelie Bellarose is crossing the Demarcation Line into Occupied France. It is here that she meets our MMC, Marcel Laurent who had just been freed from a POW camp. Marcel is a well known musician whose friend is introducing him to Zelie in hopes he can help with the Resistance.

I love how the Youth Orchestra that Marcel heads is used to help the Resistance, and also how much the beauty of music played a part in this story. But there is so much more to this book and all the different things the Resistance is doing. There is quite the cast of characters coming and going. There is intrigue, and suspense, and betrayal, and sacrifices, and a blossoming love as our characters work toward freeing France and helping defeat Germany and the Axis powers.

I loved how I learned more about WWII. And I was intrigued to learn that Zelie is based on a real life woman who led a spy ring during the war. I loved the relationship that grew between Zelie and Marcel. They had so many obstacles to overcome, but I was definitely rooting for them. Through all they were dealing with, Zelie also needed to learn to turn to the Lord who she'd long been ignoring. I loved seeing her faith growing. And I think I caught a little nod to the Codebreakers series, which is so cool.

Though the beginning of the book was a bit slower, from the middle through the end of the book I was zinging through the pages. It definitely got quite intense at times, which I love.

This was another great book from an awesome author. I highly recommend it.

I received an e-copy of this book through NetGalley and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.

The Spy Keeper of Marseilles brings readers a unique strong female lead who had to rise above her hurt and limitations to help her nation.

I do not know if I would have been able to make all the sacrifices Zelie had made in the name of her country, but it was just small examples of how strong this woman was, who others often misjudged or wanted to keep controlled and keep her light, strength and purposes hidden.

Marcel was a dashing gentleman who also raised up in circumstances and was a different kind of leader than what he originally would have chosen for himself.

I was drawn into the world of secrets and spies and was kept engaged with the mystery and suspense written in at the right moments, balancing with the emotional journey and struggles of these characters.

The Spy Keeper of Marseille isn’t just another run-of-the-mill WWII novel. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat. It will immerse you in the inner workings of the Alliance spy ring. Roseanna M. White has created this beautiful masterpiece of a story that has brought this time period to life.

Zelie works for the Alliance as a spy. Marcel is a concert pianist who was recently released from a prisoner of war camp and is now working as a spy for the Alliance, conducting a youth orchestra. Using his position to send coded messages through the radio.  When the leader of the spy ring is executed, Zelie is left in charge. Watching Zelie work through her own regrets with her late husband and struggle with being a mother while trying to give her children a free France- it made me think of all the sacrifices that were made during WWII. This book had me hooked from the start, and I could not put it down.

The romance was perfect and sweet with kisses only.

Roseanna M. White did a great job of intertwining faith throughout the story.

Wow! I never thought I could love this book as much as I LOVED The Collector of Burned Books, but I loved it more!! I’ve never been disappointed with a Roseanna White novel, and this one was stunning.
As always, I LOVE the real history and mashup of real historical figures in her books, and all the little-known Alliance/ Spy historical details were amazing! The characters, the music, the sacrifices, the heart of those fighting against evil, all of it was so beautifully wrapped up in this book!!
I read an early copy as a gift from the author and publisher.

The Spy Keeper of Marseille was, once again, a five-star read by Roseanne M. White. Her novels always blow me out of the water as she manages to mix heartfelt faith, interesting characters, spellbinding plots and sweet romance like only her novels can. I really enjoyed the setting of this novel. France is near and dear to my heart (perhaps because I just spent a couple months there) and seeing places I know of come to life in history is always so fascinating. I also really loved the way Marcel and Zelie’s musical background affected the way they thought about everyday things. It was such a fresh way to describe the mundane motions of life.

As someone who enjoys historical fiction set in WWII, but sometimes finds herself overwhelmed by the sadness of it all, I always appreciate when there is hope in spite of dark circumstances. Despite all the pain and everything that is wrong with the world, we can choose to hope in promises of Victory from our King. This just elevates the reading experience for me so much.

Overall, five stars!

A daring mother and talented musician fight for freedom from the Nazi regime in occupied France, in this gripping story of love and sacrifice.

Zelie Bellrose is a young widow who is willing to fight for a future for her two children, suddenly finding herself the unlikely leader of an intelligence agency. Every chance they take could possibly put all that she holds dear at risk. I admired her courage, as well as her cool-headed common sense, humility, and fierce devotion to her children. She knows the cost, and doesn't let it defeat her, but push her forward instead.

Marcel Laurent recently freed from a POW camp, takes a job with a travelling orchestra that comes with special privileges that he can use to help the fight for a free France. Marcel is a kind and discerning man, a quiet leader, who proves his mettle again and again. I loved how he showed his strength in trusting and being willing to follow, while being a source of support, and encouraging others to hope.

A compelling story of ordinary people, willing to risk everything for their families and country, doing extraordinary things. I was inspired by the faith of Zelie and Marcel, trusting God when hope is hard to hold onto. A gripping story from beginning to end, emotional and full of adventure that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Another stand out novel from Roseanna M. White. Highly recommend!

Per my usual comments regarding one of our favorite authors (for my wife and myself), Roseanna's novels are steeped in historical facts, personalities, locations and drama. This novel is no exception since it is grounded in the history of the real-life leader of the Alliance Marie-Madeleine Fourcade. As she details in her note at the end of the book, nearly every escapade told and attributed to our main character Zelie is true. The idea of a musician (Marcel) is also a reflection of several historical figures. The selection of classical pieces mentioned in the novel are fun to look up and play on your phone as you are reading through this wonderful and beautifully described narrative. The Christian theme is prevalent throughout as well as the love story between our two main characters (maybe a little too much dedicated to their romance but that is me). I like the lines in chapter 16 that comments on the war: "Why did people tear each other apart just because they disagreed about the best way to achieve a good life? Why did they seek power, for that matter, instead of strength? Strength defended the week. Strength sought the good of others. Strength sacrificed." Note that there are 10 discussion questions in the back for group participation. Also note that you can go to her website to check out more about where fact ends and fiction begins.

Such a stunning look behind the French intelligence movement and the woman behind it all. The strong theming Roseanna M. White is known for and the faith message of surrender absolutely shine!

Several times I almost couldn’t believe what was happening next (the mailbag! the betrayal! MI6!), but the surprising twists and turns were taken from real historical accounts. Very rich in setting and I just love that the heroine and the hero were both so supportive of each other and their families (especially Zelle’s children!). (I did think that the heroine not wanting to “settle” down to be a housewife was a smidge surprising given the era but the struggles of her first marriage made sense.)

Perfect for fans of Sarah Sundin’s and Renee Ryan’s amazing WWII novels!

The historical fiction in this book is based upon the real life Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, who was a 31 ear-old Frenchwoman and mother of two. She became leader of a vast Resistance intelligence organization in France and was the only woman to emerge as a chef de résistance during the war.
The author did a great job of sketching out this story regarding the work that she and her team accomplished during the war. This is the part of the book that I liked the most.
Her relationship with Marcel, a talented musician, was introduced for more personal interest, and served as a springboard for the struggles of relationships during war. Because of this, the second half of the story becomes uneven. More emphasis placed on her emotional feelings for Marcel and how his fervent belief and reliance of his faith affect her becomes almost as central as the spy ring.

The Spy Keeper of Marseille was a wonderful read. I read it while in a reading slump and yet this book had me wanting to keep reading. I loved the characters and storyline. I felt for the main character and how she had to make difficult choices.

The book had some intense moments and memorable scenes. I thought it was written very well and think readers who enjoy WWI/WWII novels will enjoy this one.

The romance was really sweet and I enjoyed seeing it grow. I loved how he was so selfless at times - especially with a certain thing he did towards the end.

All in all, The Spy Keeper of Marseille was another great read from a favorite author. I recommend it!

“Freedom is always worth sacrificing for.”

It’s going to be hard to put into words how much I enjoyed this story. From the first page, Zelie’s character drew me in. I related to her tendencies to rely on herself and to overextend herself to make sure everything is done right. And I so appreciated her journey to relinquishing some of that to the Lord. I could not fathom making the choice to be away from her children to protect them, yet I also understood it. I felt every bit of her stress and fear and questioning and hope. Marcel’s character was also extraordinarily done. I loved how his brain related things to music in his POV. I loved how we got to see him move from floundering to filled with purpose to all that his love for Zelie allowed him to become. I just loved how he prayed for her even when she wasn’t in a place to pray for herself.

I was struck over and over how hard it must have been for those living this in real life without so much of the communication and technology we enjoy today. Separation could very well mean forever, and even never knowing what becomes of someone. We take so much for granted. I also just want to say that I love how Roseanna White is able to write villains. I noticed this also in The Collector of Burned Books especially, as well as here. How easy to make a Nazi SS officer just evil. But this one adores music, thinks about his family back home, and even jokes with you a bit. And how easy to make a betrayer someone unlikable and unredeemable. But that’s not the case either. We are all just human, broken and flawed.

There is so much redemption and forgiveness and faith woven into these pages. It’s hard to put down with characters that become like friends. It will also change how you think about certain things in the best ways. Add The Spy Keeper of Marseille to your TBR immediately. It’s truly exceptional WWII fiction.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the author and publisher. I was not asked to leave a positive review. My opinions are my own.

The Spy Keeper of Marseille is a gripping, beautifully written WWII story full of courage, intrigue, and heart. Zelie is an extraordinary heroine—strong, determined, and impossible not to root for as she rises to lead one of the largest Resistance networks in France. Marcel’s journey from concert pianist to undercover operative adds a unique and emotional layer, and the way music threads through his espionage work is unforgettable.

Their connection is tender and hopeful, even as danger closes in from all sides. With suspense, rich historical detail, and characters who stay with you long after the final page, this is an outstanding and deeply moving read for fans of Resistance stories and powerful women in history.

In The Spy Keeper of Marseille, a novel by Roseanna M. White, Zelie Bellerose is the widow of an Army officer in France with two young children during the German occupation of France during WWII. She becomes involved in the Resistance, with her children safely away from the area with her mother. When their leader is imprisoned, Zelie is the only one who can step in and take over the network. But this works to her advantage, as no one expects a woman to be in that position.

Marcel Laurent was a well-known concert pianist, but enlisted the the French army. He was captured and imprisoned in a POW camp for a year. He is freed in a prisoner exchange with the help of a wealthy businessman involved in the Resistance. Marcel is recruited to join them. He applies to be the conductor of a youth orchestra, picking up intel he hears, sharing news in code in the orchestra’s weekly broadcasts. To his surprise, a Nazi SS officer is assigned to oversee the orchestra, causing Marcel to have to exercise extreme caution.

Zelie and Marcel share a love for music, and that and their meetings for the Resistance draw them closer. But then a stunning betrayal threatens the whole alliance.

This story is based on real-life Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, who set up and then ran the Alliance network of spies in France during WWII to get information to MI6 in England. These spies were not professionals. The idea was to place people in areas like restaurants, museums, concert halls, etc., where Nazi visitors might be more relaxed and less on their guard, and pick up information they might let slip. Then they transferred anything pertinent through a series of secret radio transmissions.

Once again, Roseanna has written a gripping story with relatable characters. Their religion was Catholic, which is accurate for the time and place. But I disagreed with a couple of points.

And I thought there were a couple of implausible occurrences in the plot. Zelie’s son seemed much more mature than an average ten-year-old. And I wouldn’t think some of the operatives would discuss and choose new call signs in front of children. Though the children were away from the main action, there was still an underlying danger that they could be traced to Zelie. So it seems the adults would have kept much more from the children who, in their innocence and naivete, might share information they shouldn’t.

But other than those things, I enjoyed the story very much.

I listened to the audiobook which was nicely read by Megan Tusing.

I’ve been a fan of Roseanna M. White’s books for years, ever since I first came across her Shadows Over England series. After thoroughly enjoying the history she shared about World War I in those early series, it’s been fun to see her get into World War II history recently (even if I secretly wish we had more World War I!).

Spy networks have always intrigued me, so I knew when I picked up this book that I’d likely love it. My hunch proved correct—I loved how this gave a snapshot of what France looked like at that time, and especially how the different governments worked (for example, I’d heard of Vichy France before, but before this book I never really understood how it differed from Nazi-controlled France). This also briefly mentioned the Spanish Civil War; that was an intriguing addition to the story!

I did find myself mildly annoyed with this book, and that’s because it came off as more feministic than I consider necessary. Yes, this real-life woman did a great job after the Nazis caught her spy-ring boss, and yes, women didn’t generally have positions like this back in those days, but it bothered me that it felt like everyone around this woman felt the need to be extra-affirming because she was a woman in that position. I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of this book; that element just felt a little too strong. Sigh.

As far as the romance was concerned, I adored it. Marcel was so sweet, and I especially loved how he cared for Zelie’s children. His genuine care for Zelie—even if she never returned his love—was a delight.

If you’re looking for a gripping, heartwarming World War II book, look no further. You’ll likely love this story.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest opinion of it.

Another fantastic historical novel by Roseanna M. White!!! "The Spy Keeper of Marseille" is such a fantastic book. The main characters Zelie and Marcel are a fantastic pairing. Their love of music and passion for saving France shine in the book. Zelie is such a strong female character running a resistance cell and working with MI6 during WWII to fight the Nazi's. Marcel is by her side, as much as she'll let him be assisting her and running a youth orchestra entertaining Nazi's while he passes on coded messages during intros for radio broadcasts of the orchestra performances.

The writing is excellent, the story moves along so quickly and this is one I had a really hard time putting down. I kept wanting to stay up to read more as I progressed reading this book but by reading it over several days, I was able to savor each scene. The twists and turns kept coming

White adds an incredible Christian faith message towards the end of the book. If I had any constructive feedback on the book, I wish there were more faith elements added in an organic way during the story.

I have read a lot of WWII historical fiction and this book definitely adds a fresh perspective and story with a female as the head of a spy ring. Readers of Christian and clean WWII fiction will enjoy this book.

Thank you to Tyndale House Publishers for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

I’m a big fan of historical fiction but I especially enjoy reading it when the main character is based off a real person. Roseanna White’s Spy Keeper is a novel of WW2 France and the Resistance’s network I’m amazed at all the things Zelle (our heroine ) was able to do and keep track of.

She brings to life the heroism of that era. What they did in their fight for freedom and to help the Allies. Watching the relationship of Zellie and Marcel (a concert pianist recently set free from a POW camp join forces. Loved watching their relationship bloom even though it could put everything in jeopardy if they got too close.
The sacrifices that Zelle in particular had to make in order to do what she did. Remarkable.

Roseanna includes wonderful back matter about the real Spy Keeper and the work of the Resistance.
Definitely a 5 star read.

Review of advance copy received from NetGalley

I received a complimentary advance copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Amazing story! Grand in scale, the storytelling and foreshadowing are masterfully done, the characters are relatable, faith is threaded throughout, and the romance has all of the swoon with the true meaning of love.

There’s a sense of danger right from the start, which not only immediately pulled me in, but it made me think of all the courageous men and women who work in dangerous situations to protect others. There’s this awareness that they are just regular people doing what’s needed.

As a story set during WWII, there are difficult moments and references. What stands out, however, is the resilience. They kept going.

And this is where the writing shines. Woven through the storytelling, is perfectly placed information, the weight of which is felt even more because it’s like a heartbreaking revelation inserted between other details. There’s this sense that this was life back then, daily life amidst devastation. The storytelling is incredible, building the tension in a way that you need to know what will happen next.

As for the faith themes, they are strong and I love the references to prayer and seeking His will. It feels like a part of the characters’ existence—prayer as close as the next breath.

In conclusion, this is really an amazing story, very suspenseful at times, with excellent writing. I loved it!

This was another excellent read by Roseanna M. White! I continue to learn new things about WWII through her books, including this one, and really appreciated her insights into the genre and topic (and faith).

Many of White's books are "comfort reads" for me--even when they tackle hard things--and this one was definitely one of those. Recommended!

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This is a wonderful book set in occupied France in 1941. Zelie is the unlikely leader of a team working for the allies. There’s lots of intrigue, danger, treachery, bravery and along the way some lighter moments, including a budding romance which Zelie tried to quell. Zelie was based on a real life heroine. A really great book.
