He's a ghost, back from the dead, and determined to claw back everything that should have been his—including me.
When I return home to my family’s ranch as a freshly divorced single mom, I expect all the usual challenges. I’m ready for the furious teenager and steeled for the small town gossip mill. I’m even prepared to be back in the thick of Stockton drama. The kind that has me helping my brothers patch bullet wounds and rebuild fire-ravaged family businesses.
What I’m not prepared for is seeing my brother’s best friend, the man who broke my heart years ago, back from the dead, and standing in the family kitchen laughing with my daughter. Our daughter. Not that he would know.
He’s nothing like I remember. The soft-spoken ranch hand my father took in like his own is a hardened cowboy, every bit as dangerous as my brothers and twice as charming. My traitorous heart even threatens to thaw when I see him standing at the end of the aisle, hat in hand, wearing a heart-stopping grin.
Unfortunately for him, I’m only walking down it to secure a legacy my family desperately needs. Because once my heart is broken, I never forget. Any path to forgiveness would involve him crawling on his knees over broken glass. A challenge he apparently sees as a silver lining.
But my secret isn’t the only one we uncover while we’re digging up the past, and the threat that follows has us racing against time and facing impossible odds.
Odds he’s determined to beat, come hell or high water.
Aspen Stockton has returned to Purgatory Falls after divorce, only to be met with a ghost.
Fallon Bishop Bradford disappeared nearly 15 years earlier and was presumed dead. When he appears out of thin air, it throws Aspen off her game.
Maggie really did save the best for last, I think. Second chance love isn’t necessarily my favorite trope, but boy did I love these two. Bishop is willing to walk through hot coals to prove to Aspen that she’s the one and she doesn’t hesitate to put him through his paces.

Maggie "I don't know your middle name" Rawdon, we need to have a talk because what did you put into this one and why is his name Bishop Bradford? I'm so head over heels in love with this man. He is literal fictional perfection and you are going to have a hard time topping this man for me. Because what do you mean this man has had a ring for her for FIFTEEN YEARS! What do you mean, this man has been yearning for her for FIFTEEN YEARS! What do you mean this man has a child with the one that got away? You truly saved the best for last because holy crap.
High Water is truly the best way to end a truly incredible series. This series has quickly become one of my favorites and one that I recommend to anyone and everyone. And now that it's over, I truly don't know what to do with myself. But with that being said, just like the other books in this series, this book will live rent fucking free until the end of time. Like there are so many scenes that have my jaw on the floor. I'm fully sat. Bound and gagged on the floor. And if you wanna know what scenes those, read the book and find out for yourself, and trust me you will know what scenes those are.
As for Bishop and Aspen, I loved these two so much! Hands down, without a question, this is my favorite couple from Maggie. Bishop has also claimed my favorite MMC and Aspen is my favorite FMC to date from Maggie. I just loved these two with every fiber of my being. Bishop needs to be protected at all costs because that man is literally perfect. And Aspen? Listen, she is in fact a Stockton and she acts accordingly. Her personality was top tier. Is she a little mean? Yeah of course but Bishop gobbled it up and asked for more. The role reversal with this one was on a whole other level and it worked perfectly. Like seeing Aspen be in control with the reverse power dynamic just worked.
Five star banger. No notes. This one ate. Going down as a top read for me in 2026, mark my words! Maggie, thank you for a wonderful ending to one of my favorite series!
You should read this book if you like: - Dark Western Romance - Small Town Romance - Second Chance Romance - Secret Baby - Marriage of Convenience
*I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Maggie Rawdon for allowing me the absolute pleasure to read High Water as an arc in exchange for my honest thoughts, opinions and review.
I went back and forth between 2-3 stars. It wasn’t my favorite book of the series. (Possible spoilers ahead)
I was not a fan of all the relic/sword stuff. I read the other books (which you almost need to because of the relic plot) and still I found myself just going blah. It was just so boring. I had a hard time not imagining the movie, The Mummy.
Bishop (H) and Aspen (h) had a secret relationship 15 years ago during a summer Aspen was broken up from Ethan (hockey player) Bishop was BFF with Aspen’s brother and he was also a ranch hand who worked at the ranch. Bishop just disappeared one day. Aspen looked for him, but eventually thought he was dead. She found out she was pregnant and married Ethan.
Now, 15 years later, Aspen divorced Ethan and she’s moved back to the ranch with her 15 years later old daughter, Fallon. Fallon is like most 15 year olds- she’s in a bad mood and angry her mom divorced her dad, Ethan.
Surprise! Bishop shows up. He suspects Fallon is his kid. She is. h is sooooooo mad at Bishop because she thought he was dead. 🥴🥴 (BTW- later in the book you find out Bishop’s first name is actually Fallon, so I guess that’s how he figured out so quick it was his kid)
There is some convoluted plot line involving Bishop’s granny, a piece of land, and granny wanting Bishop to be married and have kids before he can inherit. Then you find out why Bishop ghosted Aspen. It was just…..🤦♀️ odd. Add in all the other stuff about a sword being a relic and my brain just wouldn’t not compute the info. Then all the stuff about Bishop being there when the uncle died, then how he helped Aspen’s dad cover it up. Bishop couldn’t deal with the guilt of not telling Aspen…so he ghosted everybody??? FOR 15 YEARS?
Anyway, the 15 year old kid figures out Bishop is her dad. She’s not happy. She’s also not happy when she’s told that her mom is marrying Bishop. The kid is very close to her “dad” Ethan.
Bishop is very passive. I get that he’s trying to win back Aspen plus his kid, but he’s not very “take charge” at all. His interaction with the kid is very limited in this book until over 50% in. Aspen is VERY hot and cold with Bishop throughout most of the book. Bishop is such a good guy, that he mostly lets Aspen dictate everything. He’s definitely a “go with the flow” type of guy.
The spice was disappointing. It’s takes way too long to get there. It was nothing like Ramsey’s book (book 1) Ramsey was a bonfire. Bishop was like a small camp fire. 🤷♀️ Ngl, I still cringed when they did almost a whole chapter on backdoor smex. I guess it’s supposed to be smexy sticking a bejeweled thingamajigger up the backdoor.
The one thing that I did enjoy about this book was the co-parenting. Even though Ethan was not the teen’s dad, he still loved her like his own. I like that Aspen never bad mouthed him and that they remained friends after the divorce. I like that the teen still called Ethan “dad” and decided to call Bishop “Pop” It was sweet that the teen still went to visit her dad and spend time with him. I thought the teen’s relationship and interactions with Bishop was very relatable and realistic. Bishop didn’t just get the teen’s love because he was the bio dad. Nope, he had to work on that relationship. He has to show BOTH Aspen and Fallon that he was not going to leave.
BUT…..saying all that, the little tidbits you’d get throughout the book about Aspen and Ethan’s relationship/marriage was confusing. (It was like the author was trying to give a good reason why the marriage broke up but she still wanted to make him a good guy. I did laugh at the one point where it basically said Bishop’s dixk was bigger. 😂 There’s a few smex moments where Bishop is like “I know he didn’t do this right” (eek never bring up ex lovers during smex. Big mood killer.) I’m fully convinced Aspen married Ethan because she needed a baby daddy.
Personally, this was a blah for me. Bishop leaving for 15 years made no sense Nobody knowing where he was at made no sense BIshop’s reasoning for leaving made no sense Aspen being an archeologist was 🥴🥴 “too convenient” BIshop helping Aspen’s dad cover up a death was goofy. There was absolutely no reason for it. Wearing a black dress to your wedding is definitely a mood
I am convinced Maggie and I work in the same profession based on the robust references to archaeology throughout the text, including: - nickname Jones like Indiana - Aspen teaches archaeology (with the second a) - “field work in the summers… take on CRM or research work” - “overseeing field school and conferences coming up - “staring at database and pottery sherds” NOT shards - “an excavation of sorts… where you do all the hard work, and I get to analyze the results” - “using GPR, ground penetrating radar, to map the area” - “shove test pits” MAGGIE IF WE KNOW EACH OTHER SEND ME A SECTION 106 CONSULTATION LETTER.
Holy smokes these two had me on the edge of my seat, begging for more, and swooning so hard. I loved them. I’ll miss this crew so much but wow! What an ending ! FULL RTC
————————————
I’ve waited! And waited! And WAITED! For Aspens story! We love the single mom, archaeologist, Stockton sister! Yes we do! And it’s finally time to dive in to her life and her relationship with her sweetheart Bishop.
While I had some idea what to expect from this book I definitely got more than I could have asked for. These two brought the sweet, the swoon, and the SPICE! Holy smokes, buckle up because the spice is out of this world. I think I highlighted entire pages at one point 😌
Bishop is back in town. He’s been gone for 15 years and it’s safe to say he’s missed out on a lot. Pair that with a newly divorced Aspen who is back in her hometown with her teenage daughter, and well.. Bishop is determined to say put this time. His family needs him. And he intends to show them he can be the man they need.
These two have a lot of back and forth attraction. Although Aspen vows to stay away for good and not complicate things further, she can’t help but be drawn to Bishop. He looks better than ever. He’s completely willing to play by her rules, until lines get blurred and then it’s hard to remember why they can’t be together.
I would say this is a bit of a slow burn, but you’ll understand why when you read. It makes sense for them and their story even though I was absolutely DYING for them to bang already 😂
Overall, I loved them. Will love them. And would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who likes a little Marriage Of Convenience or Secret Baby / Second Chance with their romance. I would say reading these books in order is probably best as the plot relies heavily on past books.. but if you’re just looking for some scorching hot spice? This is the book for you.
They made me laugh, made me cry, and they’re probably my favourite of the entire series. And getting to see the gang back together again? Well that was just a bonus. Their HEA is beautiful, and it ended exactly the way it should have (imo)
🤎 Marriage Of Convenience 🤎 Secret Baby 🤎 Second Chance 🤎 He 💦 In His Pants 🤎 Lap Dance 🤎 💦 Play 🤎 “Strip” 🤎 Suspense 🤎 “I Want To Watch You” 🤎 Hilarious Granny
I went into this one already excited, but it still managed to completely take over my brain.
Aspen and Bishop’s story delivers everything you want from a second chance romance, with years of quiet longing, unresolved hurt, and emotions that hit right away. Bishop’s devotion is on another level and the fact that he never truly moved on just makes every moment land harder.
Their dynamic is what really sells it, with Aspen being sharp, guarded, and fully in control while Bishop is all patience and determination, willing to do whatever it takes to earn her back. The role reversal adds such a fun twist, and the mix of marriage of convenience, secret child, and small town tension keeps things addictive. It leans into wrapping up the series, but the balance of angst, plot, and chemistry is so well done.
This book just feels full. The found family, the glimpses of past couples, and that ending all come together in a way that is so satisfying. It is emotional, intense, and completely consuming in the best way. I already know I will be thinking about this one for a long time.
Definitely one of my top reads and I am still thinking about it.
~~~~
Huge thank you to Maggie Rawdon & The Smuthood for the ARC! 😍 All my bookish thoughts are completely my own. ✨
Immediately upon finishing I thought “well what now” This series felt like it had me in a chokehold
The dark cowboy x suspense was too good
The last Stockton. Aspen 🖤 Little miss archaeologist I loved her not being the sugar sweet FMC we get a lot Newly divorced Daughter: Fallon She doesn’t want to want him…
Bishop Surprise he’s not dead And surprise Aspens kid is actually his Honestly yes. So mush yes. For how this played out. This man would do anything for her! Down bad.
And the end of the relic mystery. This series was woven so well together.
Creo que cometí el error de leer este libro sin haber leído los anteriores porque fue muy confuso, sobre todo la parte de su relación en el pasado, pensé que ella había terminado con su novio de la universidad y luego tuvo una relación con el prota y después salen con que ellos tuvieron una relación primero, anyways al final terminó casada con ese novio por 15 años y regresa a su pueblo después del divorcio y se lo encuentra después de todo ese tiempo pensando que había muerto pero pues no y él se da cuenta que tuvieron una hija.
Sentí que pasó mucho tiempo y otro hombre crió su hija, no me gustan los single parents cuando los hijos son tan grandes me gustan cuando están chiquitos porque se me hacen más tiernos.
Además no soy muy fan de los seconds chances.
Al final me dejó un buen sabor de boca porque el epílogo es muy cheese y yo amo ese tipo de epílogos.
tropes: small town dark Western Cowboy X Archaeologist second chance secret baby/child marriage of Convenience 'it's always been you'
Aspen & Bishop were perfection. No notes. I will take zero criticism & such a perfect way to end the quiet horsemen series.
I will say, this series is a must read from the beginning to truly understand the plot aspect of this story. If you choose to jump in here, you will be confused, so you are warned.
I love the yearning, the grovelling, and the absolute definitive all in from Bishop. Aspen and her closed off, cold self truly did warm up to me. She is allowed a pass seeing as the man she loves first, the man that fathered her child shows up after 15 years when she thought he was dead. The actions of Bishop from the moment he finds out about Aspen dictates how amazing this second chance romance truly is.
Probably one of Maggie's slowest burns, however it doesn't read it at all. I think at one point I caught myself yelling "just f * c k him already." LIKE GIRL GET LAID. however it was WORTH IT.
I will be a marriage of convenience Stan until the day that I expire, and this book delivered what I needed and more. I am so sad to leave this world but Aspen and Bishop were the ending this series deserved.
Y’all buckle up, this one is twisty, spicy and angsty AF, and I was here for it.
✨ Dark Western Romance ✨ Cowboy x Archeologist ✨ Secret Child ✨ Marriage of Convenience ✨ Second Chance
If we are talking about a man who yearns, then look up Bishop in the dictionary. This man and the way he was obsessed with Aspen even after being a part for so long. Dang I loved him.
And Aspen, this woman is a queen and I will accept nothing less.
I don’t even know how to describe this book without giving things away so I’m just going to say, go In blind, enjoy the ride and hold on because this one will keep you on the edge of your seat.
OMG! Did Maggie save the BEST for LAST, she sure did! This series has been a favorite of mine from the beginning and with every Stockton you have given me more and more! Purgatory Falls never looked so good!
Aspen was the one! Bishop was the one to break me! And his undying love was the “cherry on top”!
The book was FABULOUS and one of the best series that each one lives rent free in my head and heart!
4.25 ⭐️ Aspen and Bishop’s story wrapped up the series really well. After the ending of the last book, there were so many lingering questions going into this final one, and I was desperate to finally get the answers I needed.
I enjoyed the slow, steady burn of Aspen and Bishop finding their way back to each other after fifteen years apart. It’s a second chance romance with a marriage of convenience and a secret child. There was a lot happening, and it all tied back into the mystery that has been running through the whole series.
Bishop’s feelings for Aspen have never changed, and all he wants is another chance to prove it. So when a problem pops up that can conveniently be solved with a wedding, he is not letting this second chance at being a family slip away.
Nothing pushes two people together quite like a bit of forced proximity, and Aspen is absolutely drawn to him. She, too, has never forgotten her first love. She’s a moth to a flame, and the flame is Bishop’s cock, which she very much enjoys looking at 🥵. I loved how she kept trying and failing to brush off their chemistry at first. Every time they ended up together she had a brand new excuse, and it made me laugh. Aspen is a true Stockton, just like her brothers. She takes no nonsense, knows what she wants, and takes it.
I really liked Bishop and his calm but direct approach. I wouldn’t have said no to a bit more grovelling, but he did spend a fair amount of time on his knees, so I suppose that counts for something 🥵.
The ongoing mystery subplot woven through all four books has kept me hooked from start to finish. You really do need to read the series in order to fully appreciate how well everything comes together. We get a conclusion that’s handled brilliantly. I especially enjoyed the tail end of the book where everything ramps up, along with an epilogue that made me smile 🥰. I bloody love a good epilogue.
Overall, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed The Quiet Horsemen series. Grant and Dakota are still my favourite couple, but each book has its own charm, chaos, and filth. The spice is delicious. I would absolutely devour any future books about the Briggs brothers with Marlowe and Bristol 👀🤞🏻.
Thank you so much to The Smuthood and Maggie Rawdon for the ARC.
I absolutely loved Aspen, she is a total firecracker and not someone you want to mess with. Bishop gives off golden retriever energy, but he definitely knows how to switch it up when it counts.
The second chance romance in this one just hit. Their history, the tension, and the way everything unfolds made their story so satisfying. There were so many secrets woven throughout that had me hooked, and when everything started coming to light it honestly made my heart swoon.
The suspense was perfectly balanced with the romance, keeping me engaged the entire time. And getting to see the brothers again just made it even better.
I AM UNWELL. I AM CRYING. I can’t believe this series is over. I actually don’t want to believe it because I love them SO MUCH. Ending this series with Aspen was everything I needed. What an amazing way to end the quiet horsemen series.
When the father of Aspen’s daughter shows up after 15 years when she thought he was dead she was surprised and when Bishops finds out, he does everything in his power to show that he will be there for both of them. But Aspen will need some time to believe that Bishop won’t just up and leave her again. Aspen & Bishop are EVERYTHING. PERFECTION. You can’t convince me otherwise. Bishop. Man. Bishop. The YEARNING and GROWELLING from that man. I was DONE for.
This was the perfect second chance. The way Bishop is from the moment he finds out that the love of his life and daughter are back in his life. He won’t give up until he has his family together and that is what makes this the perfect second chance. I LOVE THEM and this whole family. I am going to miss them so much and I am not ready to say goodbye but I am so excited to see what Maggie Rawdon has in store for us.
Thank you Maggie Rawdon for this eARC!
What to Expect: 🖤Dark Western Romance 🤠Cowboy x Archaeologist 🖤Second Chance 🤠Secret Baby/Child 🖤Marriage of Convenience 🤠It’s Always Been You 🖤Small Town
“Hell or high water, I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
This series has been a journey that I love and am going to miss. It’s bittersweet. One of my favorite series!
The moment I saw the tension between Aspen and Bishop at the end of West Bound, I was chomping at the bit to know more. The all-so-sweet build-up kept me reading, dying for it to break. It was a battle of wills, and Bishop wasn’t going to budge. Bishop shows up fifteen years later to find that he has a daughter with the only woman he will ever love. This reunion brought on a marriage of convenience, and he would do anything to drop the convenience part and stay married. Second-chance romance is my jam, and I was all for it. Unraveling the mystery of the relics was finally answered. This story had everything I love about Purgatory Falls. The banter, danger, suspense, all consuming love, and jaw dropping spice (Maggie’s secret weapon) . I’m going to miss Purgatory Falls, but I’m also intrigued as to what Maggie has in store for us next.
Tropes: Dark Western Romance, cowboy x archaeologist, marriage of convenience, secret baby, second chance, small town.
Thank you so much, Maggie, for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
“How about we follow my rules for tonight instead?”
Aspen is such a strong and independent woman. She has her life together, works as an archaeology teacher, and comes back to her hometown in Colorado after her divorce, ready to start over. But everything changes when she suddenly comes face to face with Bischop, the boy she used to love, the one everyone thought was dead for fifteen years. That moment when he walks back into her life felt so intense. I could really feel her shock and anger.
I loved the dynamic between Aspen and Bischop. There’s a lot of push and pull between them. Aspen tries to set rules and keep her distance, but she’s also the first to break those rules. The love scenes were so damn hot and steamy, and I loved how they continue switched in their power dynamics and let the other take over the reins. Their history is always there, and you can feel it in every scene they share and feel how much they still love each other after all those years.
Bischop is a man after my heart. He does everything he can to be part of Aspen’s life again and to be there for Fallon, the daughter he didn’t know he had. You can see how hard he tries. He’s constantly trying to balance everything and not lose them again.
I also liked the backstory about why he left. The secret, the promise, and the buried sword, one of the relics that kept them in danger for so many years. It made his choices more understandable, even if they still hurt Aspen. He really thought telling her would case more hurt. The fact that he wrote letters to her while he was absent and gave them to her after 15 years, made my heart go soft for him.
The only thing I missed a bit was the action. In the previous books, there was always this feeling of danger in the background, and I didn’t feel that as much here. It’s more focused on the romance, reconnecting and family. The action only really picks up around 80% when they genuine start searching for the missing relic, and I wish we had gotten more of that earlier.
I really loved this finale to the Quiet Horsemen series, it’s a strong, emotional ending to the series with a beautiful second-chance romance. But also I am a bit sad that this is the last we get to see them all.
I'M SO SAD THIS SERIES IS OVER BUT WHAT A WAY TO END IT ALL!! I have absolutely devoured every single Stockton sibling book and GOD I was excited to get to know their QUEEN of a sister more!!
This book was such a wonderful way to end this series and it's always one of my top recommendations. Each book can hold its own but all together - utter perfection. I love these siblings so much!
Bishop and Aspen were amazing together. From their interactions at the end of West Bound to their story, their history and chemistry were evident. I felt like an intruder in the room watching their relationship play out. Bishop was just utter perfection; he was the perfect man, cowboy and the way he embraced being a dad to a teenager? STICK A FORK IN ME. He would do absolutely anything for his girls and God it was attractive. Aspen was such a spitfire, she was a little mean and honestly, I ate that shit up. So did Bishop hehe. I loved their dynamic, their chemistry was palpable and ugh, they were just so hot. Her Domme energy suited her character arc SO WELL.
I really loved this, and the way that Maggie bought the other characters in (love those Stockton boys and their women!!) and resolved the overall plot that we've been following since book 1, was done really well. There were a couple of minor things that I would have loved to have been further explained or gone into more BUT overall, I really loved this.
Thank you so much Maggie and team for the advanced copy of High Water!!
The last book in the Quiet Horsemen series is here, and Maggie saved the best for last.
Fallon Bishop Bradford. The man. The most down bad man who yearned for FIFTEEN YEARS for his best friend’s younger sister. Please.
Bishop and Aspen had a secret somewhat relationship, and they both loved each other. But Bishop left for important reasons, not knowing Aspen was pregnant with his baby.
He came back after 15 years, Aspen was newly divorced, and it was clear that they still had feelings for each other. I loved seeing Bishop work his way back into Aspen’s heart (as if he’d ever truly left) was. And he didn’t hesitate when it came to wanting to know his daughter.
This was honestly a slow burn, but it was so worth it. Aspen Stockton and Bishop Bradford were the perfect ending to this series.
This will forever be one of my favorite series, and I’m sad to say goodbye. But whatever Maggie writes next, I’m here for it.
On a different note: they remind me a lot of Quentin Undergrove and Madison Westfield from Rival Hearts (also by Maggie), and I love them too.
Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, GIIIIIRL! What are you doing to me?!?
Aspen - The kinship I felt with this woman. Her strength, and the “I’ll do it myself” mindset , and everything I do is for my daughter, while living with heartbreak but never letting it show - Sheesh!
Bishop - The man with a secret and a love that burns so deep but never known to anyone but himself. A man coming back to town with a mission.
The angst, the undeniable pull, the love, the care, the family intertwinement.
As a reader of The Quiet Horsemen Series, I loved all the connections and call backs. Family, blood or found, is all that matters. And this was the best ending (even though I don’t want it to end.)
And not to mention, half way through the book, Maggie drops the name connection! 🤯
I loved this book so much and felt so lucky to get an ARC copy. I’m going to have to start the series over again!
This is a second chance dark western romance. Aspen is back home with her daughter after a divorce so she can be closer to her family. What she doesn't expect is to run into Bishop, they guy who disappeared on her years ago and was presumed dead. They both have secrets they've been keeping which come to light. Will the secrets they discover tear them apart or will they be able to figure it all out before time runs out? If you enjoy your westerns on the more dark side, you'll enjoy this book.
I loved getting to ARC read this book! Maggie Rawdon is a brilliant author. This Quiet Horsemen series has been an absolute favorite of mine. From Bull Rush (#1 in this series) Ramsey is my absolute favorite MMC because he is hiding a very bold way of showing his lifelong dedication, even through separation IYKYK 🥵. High water is the final book in the series, the story of the Stockton’s only sister and Bishop the father of her 15 yr old daughter that left her before she could tell him she was pregnant. She thought he was dead until she’s divorced and he shows up saving one of her brother’s lives. This book is so damn good! Bishop is the MMC that we all love, determined to win her heart, patient but confident, follows all her rules but makes her want them broken, a cowboy who figures out how to be a father. The slow burn but constant pining is fabulous and the spice and chemistry between these two is perfection! This entire series is 5 stars all day every day!
i really tried to get into this book, but i just couldn’t. the MMC seemed like a dud, and the FMC had no backbone whatsoever. her 15 year old daughter was harder on the MMC for ditching them than the FMC was 😒 what absolutely pushed me over the edge, though, was the MMC’s grandma being an asshole to the FMC as if it was HER fault that the MMC disappeared for 15 fucking years. the MMC’s reason for disappearing for that long was also stupid and unbelievable. just nonsensical bs all around 🙂↔️
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Huge thank you to Maggie Rawdon and the Smuthood for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I am emotional. I cannot believe that one of my favorite series has come to an end. I never wanted this to end and I took my time savoring my read. Aspen and Bishop’s story was the perfect wrap up to this phenomenal series!
Maggie wrote an absolutely gripping storyline that had me hooked from page one… which was honestly to be expected with how book three left off. My attention never wavered and it felt like no stone was left unturned.
Bishop is everything. A man down bad from the start that will take any bit of attention he can get and appreciate it? Be still my heart. The way he just soaked up every minute taking care of or helping Aspen and Fallon was so well written. He is everything I love to see in a MMC. Not to mention, daddy Bishop is hot 🤷♀️.
Aspen was a character that I was obsessed with from the moment she was introduced in the series. You could just tell she had so many layers… you could also that she was strong, independent and took no shit. I loved finally getting to see her full story. I loved her relationship with her brothers but I especially loved her relationship with Fallon.
Aspen and Bishop’s story was perfect. Their backstory was so raw and real and I loved it so much. The way they took care of each other was top tier. Their banter and chemistry unmatched… honestly I can’t get over them together. Maggie Rawdon did not disappoint writing Aspen and Bishop’s relationship. Add in the family dynamic she wrote with Fallon? Maggie, you have outdone yourself.
Would I suggest this to a friend? Yes! Everyone needs to go pick up this series! Would I reread? Yes! Already thinking about how soon should I do it. Would I like a trophy? Yes but I’m torn between which one I want or if I just need all three. Is that dramatic of me? No.
I can’t believe this is the end to The Quiet Horsemen series! Three Stockton brothers, one bad a$$ Stockton sister, a family ranch, family casino business and A TON of secrets.. we’ve been 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘪𝘵 in Purgatory Falls - and I would visit it all 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣.
High Water is the fourth and final book in the series and follows Aspen Stockton and her second chance at love with her fist (and let’s be real, one and only love), Bishop Bradford. He’s her younger brother Levi’s best friend and ⚠️ 𝙎𝙋𝙊𝙄𝙇𝙀𝙍 𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝙏 ⚠️ the father of her daughter, which he learns of only when re-acquainting/seeing her again all these years later. Their daughter Fallon even shares her namesake with Bishop (his real first name is Fallon). There are secret tattoos, a wedding/arrangement of convenience, treasure searching, pining, and what I loved so much - a woman taking full control over her life, body and seggs life. Aspen is falling back in love with Bishop but takes it all at her own pace and they work through/talk through things from the last, missing information and just fill in the blanks, like the ultimate one of why he left suddenly all those years ago. This is hard for me, as with each book I truly fell in love with each couple and main characters individually with each book, but I have to say that Aspen and Bishop have stole my heart. Maybe it’s that she’s a mom and there is a GUT WRENCHING scene in this book that made me cry all these ugly tears, but their love for each other, it just flows off the page and into your heart.
Maggie’s writing is my favourite. Her ability to tell a story and create a world I would love to be immersed in, stands on the tallest pillar and will always be stories that I run to. If you have not yet delved into Purgatory Falls, buy your ticket now. I promise you won’t regret it!
What To Expect: Dark Western Marriage of Convenience Secret Baby Second Chance Cowboy X Archaeologist
The final chapter of the Quiet Horsemen is here, and I was ready from the first page. Well, actually I was ready in West Bound when the hint of what was coming was dropped in the kitchen when Aspen and Bishop see each other again after 15 years.
Aspen, the only sister is here and ready for her HEA. She is newly divorced and back home to help her brothers solve the mystery that is threatening their ranch and livelihoods. What she was not prepared for was Bishop's sudden reappearance. You see, this means that her teenage daughter will now meet her biological father after all these years. Fallon is not a fan of this development, but Bishop is determined to be their for his family and show them how he intends to stay forever this time.
Aspen and Bishop have so much baggage to unpack. Their story was unresolved for so long so these old wounds are now being broke back open. I loved how open and willing Bishop was to do whatever he needs to show Aspen and Fallon he is serious. He is even willing to play by any rule that Aspen sets forth. But as the lines start to blur, their emotions become more involved and it is harder for Aspen especially to remember why they cannot stay together.
Aspen and Bishop are fire together. Their slow burn tension was fantastic and I could not get enough. The moments between Fallon and Bishop were also sweet and I loved how he connected with his daughter through horses and the ranch.
That being said, some who do not necessarily like the secret baby trope might struggle with this book. While I had questions and did not understand why the characters made certain decisions, those specifics did not take away from my enjoyment of the book overall. The conclusion of the plot had me glued to the pages as I wanted to know what happened and how the family would survive.
Thank you so much to Maggie and her team for an early copy of High Water!
Cowboy x archaeologist Marriage of convenience Secret baby Second chance Dark western Small town
This is one of my favorite cowboy romance series, and I am not surprised at all that Maggie Rawdon did it again. This was absolutely flawless. A dark cowboy romance with suspense, incredible spice, and so much tension. The chemistry and angst between our Aspen and Bishop was palpable, I was glued to the pages the entire time. The amount of passages I highlighted on my Kindle is honestly ridiculous. And I already know that when this releases in audio, I’ll be listening to it too.
“I open my eyes again to take in the view, and f*ck me. I don’t deserve my wife. She’s the most perfect f*cking thing I’ve ever seen.”
Maggie’s writing is fabulous. The men she writes? Top notch. And her FMCs are always strong but still human, layered, emotional, and real. Aspen and Bishop completely owned my heart. Their history, the tension, the way everything unfolds… it just worked. I’m so sad this series is over, but I’m also more than ready to dive into Maggie’s backlist.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Thank you so much The Smuthood and Maggie Rawdon for the review copy, all opinions are my own.
Aspen is back home in Purgatory Falls with her daughter after going through a divorce. Being closer to family was the goal but the last person she expected to see was the love of her life from when she was a teenager - she thought he was 💀😳 So many secrets stand between them, but now Bishop is here to stay and win back his girl(s) 🤭
I am so sad this series is coming to an end, but what a way to go out!! Wrapping up the captivating suspense wound through this family, Aspen's story is exactly what we needed! Bishop & Aspen had me kicking my feet with giddiness, crying for their pain, sweating from their hotness 🥵 laughing at the banter, & hopingggg they would find their way back to each other 🥰 Sometimes your first love is the truest thing of all and stands no chance at the odds against it ❤️
P.S. If you love Beth & Rip, you will ADORE Aspen & Bishop!! 🤠
“These aren’t something to be worried about, Jones. They’re just another thing about you to be obsessed with. Secret little memories. Reminding me that you carried my whole fucking heart in this body. I might not have gotten the chance to see it for myself in person, but this is the next best thing. Only turns me on more.”🫠
That’s it. That’s the review. When a man says that about pregnancy stretch marks? This is a near-death experience. I think I died somewhere between page 242 and 243. An MMC who is ready to do everything to get his girl back. Who says and does everything right. Who is a partner and want to help. Please, where do we get in Line? 🥵😏
I have so many highlights, I might as well frame the entire book. For the mama out there, this book is for you! 💝
I cannot believe we are on the final book in The Quiet Horsemen series. It's so bitter sweet to say goodbye to this small town and characters, but I am excited to see what Maggie has up her sleeve next.
This story follows Aspen and Bishop. Aspen is the sister of the Stockman brothers and Bishop is the boy who the Stockman family took in when he couldn't escape the abuse of his family.
Aspen and Bishop have a lot of things that have come to the forefront and all the old wounds are being reopened. While Bishop is VERY open about how he feels and where he sees his future, but Aspen has her walls up and doesn't know what to believe. Seeing the dynamic between Aspen and their daughter Fallon made my heart so happy, and witnessing Bishop start to bond with Fallon after 15 years was so incredible. The tension between Aspen and Bishop was HOOTTT! This was a delicious slow burn that heats up quick.
I was so intrigued how Maggie was going to wrap up the series plot, and she did not disappoint!
The reason this book is not a 5 star read for me was because Bishop & Aspen's relationship after 15 years. I do not believe there was enough groveling, while he was a lot of talk. I just wish there was more showing than telling with their relationship rekindling.
Dnf at ~25% - I'm honestly shocked how much I hate this book so far
I didn't love the bizarre relic baloney that was created for the Stockton family series but, I generally liked the characters and the basic background stories for each of them. This book however is starting off really badly, to the point that I hate both Aspen and Bishop for being whiney little dramatic fools.
Why would anyone want their childhood home when it was the site of traumatic childhood abuse? Why would anyone consider falling from a horse murder? Why would anyone think they would be more available as a single parent than part of a couple? There are so many ridiculously idiotic choices in the first 140 odd pages of this 400+ page book. I can't be this annoyed this quickly and still drag myself through a book so long.
