This book was a mixed bag for me. First off, I really like Oregon Trail stories. We didn't see as much of the hardships of life that some writers add, but it was okay. It started off really well--Emma is painfully shy and socially awkward and silently in love with Dean, the doctor attached to the wagon train. He's really good--probably one of the best (and most patient) heroes I've seen in a long time. He has been a surgeon in the Civil War and carries painful memories of the death and trauma he observed there. There is a flashback scene where he goes to find a dead soldier's letters to his wife that is quite touching and utterly humanizing. Because of his character, I would give the book 3.5 stars.

Then there is the heroine, who absolutely drove me crazy. To be honest, I don't know what Dean wanted with her. The story starts out with Emma's infuriating, interfering mother trying to push them into marriage. She is tireless in this pursuit until ANOTHER doctor named Russ shows up. Russ knows Dean from medical school and the Civil War and spends most of his time disparaging his character and telling everyone on the train how Dean is a coward and a liar and a deserter. Then the mother, bossy as always, decides Emma should marry Russ instead of Dean and begins new machinations to push them together. Emma, always a good sport, says well, my mother has been through a lot and I don't want to go against her, so I'll dance with Russ and see how it goes. Zero independence. Zero inability to take control of her own life until Dean finally tells her he's done until she can make up her own mind and stick to it.

I think the problem may have been that the foundation of the plot just didn't have a lot going on around it. Woman on Oregon Trail meets doctor, falls in love....and then what? There's a tornado. Then what? Where do we go from there? The main conflict--Emma's constant deference to her hawklike mother--was annoying, then tiresome, then just predictable and infuriating--didn't work. It seemed contrived. I'd rather have seen some of the more organic conflicts we find in other Oregon trail works--difficulties on the trail, sickness, death. Something leading to a marriage of convenience would have been really interesting.

I won't go on, because it would get into spoilers. For me, though, by the end of the novel, I was so sick of Emma. Her "I don't know . . .my mother . . . she's been through a lot . . . " had so damaged my view of her relationship with Dean that I really wouldn't have blamed him if he just walked away from all that. I was almost hoping he would.

Review of trail of longing

***I recieved this as an ARC for my honest review***

This is now my favorite book of the series, so far. This story takes on the love intrest of Emma and Dean. Emma is insanely shy when ever she is around Dean. She can't form sentences and has a hard time even saying hi. She has loved him from the minute she saw him. Dean, he find Emma to be beautiful and wants nothing more than to hear her speak and laugh. Although he has other women fighting for his effection, he only cares for Emma.
Emma's mother kind of drove me crazy. She pushes her daughter into so many things that she doesnt want to do because she "needs to find a good husband". But not for love. Love destroys you. If you marry for status, money, stability etc, when he leaves, you wont be heart broken. She didnt listen to anything her daughter said, but then again, Emma didnt fight back either. Which also drove me nuts. Emma was too worried about her mothers feelings to consider her own.
Now, if you have read the other two books, you'd know that Emma, Dean and her mother stayed behind when Emma sprained her ankle. Thats when the story went places! A new wagon train arrives - full of Irishmen and women. Emma befriends and girl named Katie who is a firecracker. However it gets rough when an old acquaintance of Deans happens to be in the same train. Within the first few pages, I couldnt stand Russ. Oh man do I lothe him. (PS, I love books that make me love or hate a character. Merry does a fabulous job at this!)
I dont want to divulge too much as i dont want to give it all away....
Words happen and no one knows who to believe. Emma is torn between her love and her mother. Although, events happen that make her realize what is right and what needs to be done.
This book is wonderfully written and kept me interested the whole time. As stated before, Merry is fabulous at bringing these characters to life.
I can not wait for the next one!

I read the first two books in this series back in 2015, and very much enjoyed them, and in 2020 I came across the next two books while browsing in a bookstore and snatched them both up. And as often happens, when I have so many different book series in progress, they then sat on my shelves until now.

I’ll admit that it took me awhile to really warm up to Emma. When the story opens, she’s madly in love with Dean, even though she’s never spoken to him. And when she does finally speak to him, she’s so shy that she can barely stammer out full words, much less a complete sentence. She was sweet enough, but her mother was a piece of work, shamelessly contriving to push Emma and Dean together and telling Emma she needs to “trap” Dean because he’s such a good catch. Much to Emma’s dismay and embarrassment, but to Dean’s amusement. He’s interested, and is willing to let Emma’s mother play matchmaker. Actually, I guess my taking awhile to warm up to Emma isn’t quite true – I liked her just fine, until her mother decided another candidate would be better than Dean, and Emma would not stand up to her. Dean was frustrated, and I was right there with him, while Emma kept insisting that her mother had been through so much that she couldn’t go against her wishes.

I loved Dean. He’s a doctor, and his tending to the other travelers on the wagon train was sweet and compassionate. After a tornado ravages the travelers and Emma’s ankle is sprained and swollen and painful, she and her mother and Dean and dropped off at a way station so she can rest and stay off her feet while they wait for the next wagon train to come along. And that’s when the trouble started. They join the next train, where Emma becomes good friends with another girl, Katie, and where she meets Russ, who went to medical school with Dean, was a surgeon alongside Dean on the battlefields, and who tells everyone that Dean was a deserter, along with lots of other stories. The speed with which Emma’s mother suddenly throws her lot in with Russ and begins pushing Emma to him and away from Dean was astonishing, and I began to hate her mother. That was the point where I also got exasperated with Emma for not standing up to her.

Then Emma and Katie are kidnapped by a couple of Indians, and Dean and Aidan, who has been in love with Emma practically his whole life, take off after them, while Russ refuses to go along, claiming he needs to stay behind to help protect the other women.

Needless to say, Dean rescues Emma, they declare their love for each other (and spend a steamy night in a cave), and everything is right with the world after that. Except that the two had Indians split up and gone in different directions, and when the book ends we still don’t know the fate of Katie and Aidan. Thankfully, their story is the next book, which I am now off to get started on.

This is an OK Western romance novella, with a mostly likable couple, but Emma really needed to grow a backbone and stand up to her mother more. I also would have liked more backstory on both Emma and Dean.

Emma was sweet, but painfully shy and socially awkward. That in itself is normal for many people, but it bothered me that she let her mother control her so much. She needed to stand up to her mother, and tell her when she didn't agree with what she was doing -- but she let her mother control her, and almost lost Dean because of it. By the way, her mother was awful, and her husband should NOT have let her get away with such terrible behavior.

Dean was likable too, but he needed to defend himself from the lies that were told about him. He was convinced that no one would believe him, so he just kind of gave up and let people decide for themselves if the lies were true. He finally defended himself in the end, but it took him almost losing Emma to do it. I did like that he kept giving Emma more chances to be with him, even though she couldn't stand up to her mother -- he was much more understanding about that then most men would have been.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the way the characters of this book interacted with the characters of the first two of the series. Merry Farmer knows how to hook you and keep you interested in her books. I am so upset when the book ends, I always want more!!!

Emma was so shy, especially when Dr. Dean Meyers was around. What a man!!!! Emma thought he was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. During the time that they had been travelling on the wagon train, she had stolen plenty of glances in his way. Her mother was pushing her to start a relationship with him, she just couldn't . Everytime he was near she look at her feet when talking to him. All she wanted was to be Mrs. Dean Meyers, but how was she to do this when she couldn't even look at him when she talked to him, what would she want with a woman who couldn't even speak for herself?

Dean Meyers had seen his share of death, fighting and pain in the war. He was a doctor, he loved what he was doing. He was very happy he had joined the wagon train, Miss Emma Sutton was a sight to behold, so beautiful she hurt his eyes to gaze upon her. If only she wasn't so shy, was she that way naturally or was it something in her past that caused her shyness? He aimed to find out, if only she would open up to him.

I really loved this story. I am going to have to purchase this box set and get the rest of the series.

This is a book to be skimmed. Not much changes throughout it. Until Emma finally gets some spunk all of a sudden at the very end. She was a boring character. Dean deserved so much more and a little more detailed parts about his past. This made me give up on this series.

This was a wonderful frustrating read with characters you are going to love and some will not be crazy about. The author gives you a story you really get into as the characters take over you do a lot of cheering and a little cursing. Emma mother drove me crazy with her wishy washy ways along with Russ. I really wanted to reach inside the book and pull them out before they really messed up Emma and Dean’s life. I do have to say they add a lot of interests to the read as these two do their best to keep them apart. But I am getting ahead of the story.

Ms. Clarine does a wonderful job of narration she really pulls you g, and her female ones are very soft and rich. You have no trouble hearing what emotions each are feeling into the story with her wonderful character voices. Her male voices are smooth, rich and strong or who is talking. There are not any background noises or any places in the audio where the beginning of the chapter the voice is higher or lower than the last chapter. Just a smooth, clean rich listen that really pulls you in. The narrator really puts a lot into the listen you can hear the sadness or excitement in her voice. I enjoyed this story and narration so much I found things I could do so I could listen longer. She really painted the picture in my mind of how things go on a trail ride. She made me understand that Emma really loved her mother and over looked a lot of her nonsense due to the love she has for her. I am not sure I would have gotten this sense if I had read the book. I have not listened to anything by this narrator but am really looking forward to listen to more of her work.

Emma is having a hard time keeping Dr. Dean out of her mind. Oh the things she would love to do to him a lady shouldn’t think about. There really isn’t any way he would be interested in a girl like her but oh a girl can dream. Once her mother saw them together and found out he was a doctor she doesn’t give up and pushes the two each time she gets a chance. That is until someone new comes along that puts a spin on the love match. It is left up in the air who will win the lovely Emma’s hand in marriage. Emma is so shy she can hardly get words out of her mouth. She tries to talk with Dean but gets so tongue tied he must think she is simple. Her mother is so embarrassing as she pushes these two together it is hard for Emma to hold her head up.

Dean has had his eye on the pretty Emma every since he spotted her talking and playing with the children on the trail. She was so smooth even when she must be scared out of her mind when the little girl held out her hand to show her what she had found. She really was something else in deed. He finds the other women on this wagon train just too much always trying to get his attention or trying to push him into marriage. They aren’t interested in him just that he is a doctor and has a little money. They only worry about themselves and talk about nonsense stuff. Emma is different she is down to earth a women you can really communicate with that is when she lets her guard down. That mother of hers is something else she just might come in handy now that he has decided that Emma will be his bride.

Something happens that put a snag in the plans of the train leaving Emma and Dean with bright thoughts. Just as things seem to be going their way a few other things happens that really puts a twist into the works. Leaving us all guessing what will happen next at the turn of events. Things really take off here and the book really starts jumping with your heart jumping along with it. Danger is near as these find people will see no one and nothing is safe how can it be when you have outlaws and Indians at every turn.

I loved the baiting the humor that comes with it. I even enjoyed her mother from time to time even though she really is a pain. Emma’s father made me chuckle a few times at his yes dears or his witty answers. My heart really broke for Emma’s sister and I feel her story will be somewhere in this series. Katie I can’t wait to read more about her and her story. Once you find out why Emma’s mother does what she does my heart missed a beat. It really is heartwarming and touching. The ending is SWEET…. This is a pretty clean read but it does have passion of the finest. There is some steam that will steam up your glasses. The author gives you a story inside a story where you heart will be doing double time as she throws a twist on it, you just melt. This was very well thought out with a wonderful plot and wonderful characters from a very talent author who knows how to pull her readers in getting them so invested in the read. If you like western romance you don’t want to miss this audio or book.

Trail of Longing, Merry Farmer's third book in her Hot on the Trail series, is a romance featuring Miss Emma Sutton and Dr. Dean Meyers. Emma is a shy, kind girl, one who helps entertain and watch the younger children on the wagon train as they make their way to Portland. Dean is a doctor who is heading West to recover from the traumas of the Civil War, where he served as a battlefield surgeon.

Emma has a crush on Dean and admires his dedication to helping the people on the wagon train with whatever injuries and illnesses they may get. Dean, meanwhile, has noticed Emma's regard and has found that he likes how she helps with the young children and her shyness. It is not until the beginning of this book that the two interact and their first few interactions are awkward as Emma is too shy to actually speak to him beyond simple, one-word answers. This does not stop Dean from trying to get to know her better and, like most romance novels, circumstances occur to help this along.

Trail of Longing is a solidly mediocre western romance. Emma and Dean seemingly fall in love with very little effort or interaction, a premise I'm willing to give because it is a romance novel and that can be par for the course. Neither the hero or heroine are particularly interesting; Emma's metaphorical journey is to learn to stand up for herself, while it is unclear what exactly Dean must do. Emma's mother, Mrs Sutton, is an annoying characters, who is a social climber more suited to the drawing rooms of society than to the West. She is crass at times, forceful and determined that she knows best. Emma's father is a nonentity and her sister Alice is as well, though in Alice's case, we know she is mourning the death of her husband in the war.

Conflict in the book doesn't really begin until about the halfway point and that is when we are introduced to Dr. Russ Sandifer. Sandifer and Dean were doctors together in the war and do not have an amicable relationship. I won't spoil you with the details but I was disappointed by the reaction of some of the characters to this conflict. The conflict seemed contrived and Sandifer didn't really have much teeth as a protagonist. The solution to this conflict also left much to be desired.

In all, Trail of Longing fails to provide memorable characters and plot. It is a fast read that provides a happily ever after but not much else. I give it three stars because while there is nothing special about it, there is nothing wrong about it either.

Trail of Longing is available now. I was given an ARC for review purposes.

This book was gifted to me in return for an honest review. I feel that with this third book this series is really coming into its own, and i have to say I'm really enjoying it. It's not the sort of genre i would have normally picked for myself but i have become so invested in these characters that i feel i now need to follow it through right to the end to see what happens to them all, and that's due to the fact that the author is very adept at creating unique and interesting characters with differing personalities. Emma is a shy, quiet, proper lady with a very kind heart, whilst David is a Doctor who is charming & kind with a quiet strength that endears him to almost everyone. David instantly knows that Emma is the one for him, but he also knows he must tread carefully, not just because of Emma's shyness but also her wonderfully interfering mother. There are some quite comical scenes between the three of them that left me smirking along with Emma & David. Farmer is so good at bringing this period of time to life, and the band of characters are as eclectic as you would imagine there to be in the wild west. Watch out for Russ in this book, a character you want to smack in the nose as soon as you meet him, grubby's not the word for him (shudder). David handles him with aplomb but he definitely makes his presence felt. We also get to see some interaction between the pioneers and the local Indians in this book, and as the outcome of this is incomplete I will look forward to seeing how it plays out and what repercussions are to follow, if any. David & Emma were so well suited and from the very beginning you could feel the love that they felt for each other. There were times i wanted to shake Emma for not standing up to her mother, but i could also understand that her nature didn't allow her to be selfish to her own wants and needs. When she finally did take what she wanted i felt like shouting hallelujah, at last! Through a series of events which sees them go through sheer terror, the joy of being united, the trauma of a medical emergency, and a tense escape, she and David finally give into their feelings with an intensity that shows what they'd just endured. There was no shame, it was sexual, sensual and loving. The introduction of the new Irish settlers gave the book a lighter feel, with their sunny dispositions and outspoken ways. I loved Emma & Katie's friendship, it was good for Emma. Katie had the boldness that Emma lacked and Emma relished in it.I can't wait to find out what's happened to Katie and Aiden, It's a cliff hanger that needs answering very soon

Trail of Longing is a novel by Merry Farmer. It is book three in the Hot on the Trail series. This book is about Emma Sutton who is on the wagon train with her parents.
Emma Sutton was daydreaming about Dr. Dean Meyers when the young Pickett girl came to show her a beetle she had found. Emma had offered to watch over the Pickett children to get out of the wagon. Her Father, Mother, and sister Alice were headed to Oregon. Hopefully this would help Alice recover from the death of her young husband, Harry, who was fighting in the Civil War. His death dealt her a hard blow and nothing they seemed to do seemed to help. Emma would rather walk with the children and daydream about Dr. Meyers. When Sadie, the young girl, cut her foot, Dr. Meyers stepped in to help Emma get Sadie back to her wagon and to help him fix Sadie’s foot. Mrs. Pickett was used to her children getting hurt so took it in stride. However, Emma’s Mother did not.
Emma’s Mother kept a close eye on her daughter. She was determined that Emma would not make the “mistake” Alice had made and marry for love. Alice did and see where it got her? When she found Emma was with Dr. Meyers, her tune changed quickly. She began forcing Emma into clothes which were totally inconvenient for the wagon train, and put her in Dr. Meyer’s presence whenever possible. Things were looking up when the Tornado hit!
A massive tornado went close to the wagon train but missed hitting it head on. The winds were enough to turn wagons over and scatter belongings everywhere. Emma and her family were fine except for Emma’s broken ankle. When the wagon train set out again, the Sutton wagon stopped at a nearby way station and Emma and her Mother were left behind for Emma to heal. Luckily for them, Dr. Meyers decided to stay with his patient. Mr. Sutton and Alice were to go on and they would catch the next wagon train going through and find them. This fit Mrs. Sutton’s plans just fine. She didn’t know that Dr. Meyer’s background would interfere.
They were picked up by a wagon train of Irish immigrants. They rode with Katie Boyle and her family while Dr. Meyer rode with the family of Adrian Murphy. While the attraction between Katie and Adrian set the background, girls were kidnapped by Cheyenne Indians. Adrian and Dean Meyers rode after them. Would they find the girls and how would they manage to get them away fromt he Indians. If they were successful, they still had to make it back to camp.

Excellent book but a little too much like the first two in spots.

Merry Farmer does it again! I highly recommend reading this and the other two books in her Hot on the Trail series, Trail of Kisses book 1, and Trail of Hope book 2 if you have not already read them they are must reads!!!

Emma Sutton is shy and has fallen hopelessly in love with Dr. Dean Meyers along the Oregon Trail. If her mother has anything to do with it, Emma will be engaged and married to Dr. Dean Meyers before long. Since Emma has a hard time forming a complete sentence in the presence of Dr. Meyers it might take a while or then again it might not.

Dr. Dean Meyers thought that Miss Emma was the most charming young lady in the entire wagon train, as he had watched her watching him. All of the single ladies and their mama’s were trying to get and keep his attention however all he could think of was Miss Emma, and he couldn’t stay away from her. He found any and every excuse to be near her.

There was a tornado on the trail in which Emma ankle is trapped by her father’s safe. Dr. Meyers comes to her rescue and removes the safe, however her ankle is not broken however it’s very badly injured. He wants her to stay in the wagon and let her ankle heal however, the jarring of the wagon doesn’t help and might make it take longer to heal. Therefore, her family decided to stay behind at the way station and then to catch up with the next wagon train that would come by. Since the way station was too small to house her father and sister as well it was decided that Emma, her mother and Dr. Meyer stay behind. Emma has fallen completely for Dr. Meyers, however when the next wagon train stops by her mother might have other plans for Emma’s life with the new doctor on that wagon train. Will Emma and Dr. Meyers stay together or will she fall for the new doctor’s charm?

Merry Farmer has woven an intriguing story of shy Emma Sutton and Dr. Dean Meyers as they travel along the Oregon Trail. Emma is hopelessly smitten with Dr. Meyers but is not sure if her attention is returned. Emma's mother will do anything to snag a ridiculously good catch as a doctor for her daughter, no matter what consequences might occur.

Dr. Dean Meyers has been watching Emma and noticing what a lovely catch she is. His biggest challenge is getting her to talk to him. While Mrs. Sutton is trying to catch his eye on Emma's behalf, Dean really wishes Emma would speak to him so they can become acquainted better. When a tornado hits, Emma's injury is the excuse Dean needs to spend additional time with Emma without appearing to forward.

Leaving the wagon train to recover from her injury, Emma and Dean spend time becoming acquainted, under the watchful eye of mother. After a few blissful moments, they join another wagon train to continue on the trail. This train has a doctor already, whom is none other than a past colleague of Dr. Meyers. Dean and the new doctor have an interesting history and Emma's mother doesn't care which doctor wins the hand of fair Emma.

With the additional of some fun-loving Irish characters, the new wagon train promises to be lively, exciting, and filled with adventure! Emma must make a choice and Dean's future is hanging in the balance. Merry has captured the challenges and romance of love on the Oregon Trail! I have received a copy of the book for my honest review.

I love series books, and this is book 3 of the Hot on the Trail books. The book is well written and can easily read as a standalone, but the stories are so good, it is best to read in order, you will fall in love with the characters in each book. Book 3 focuses on Dr. Dean Meyers and Emma Sutton.

I found Dean to be a man who honestly cares about people and proves it in the way he treats them and their ailments and injuries. He consistently proves himself as a competent and compassionate doctor. Emma is rather shy and enamored by Dr. Meyers. After being injured during the tornado, it is decided that it would be best for Emma, her mother, Elizabeth, and Dr. Dean Meyers to stay at an abandoned way-station and wait for another wagon train since they run every week or so. It is easy for two people who have feelings for each other to start to fall in love, especially with a meddlesome mother pushing the relationship. The journey is full of adventure, as well as, trouble-makers. The second wagon train comes with immigrants from Ireland, and they are a very lively bunch, especially with Aiden who has eyes for Katie. The storyline kept me captivated and the pages turning. I found the dialogue entertaining and there are a few characters that will have you rolling your eyes at their outrageous stories (aka lies) and boastfulness. I am enjoying this series and excited to see where the next story will lead. Then ended with a bit of a cliff-hanger in this one!

Merry Farmer has done it once again! With her final installment for her "Hot On the Trail Trilogy" comes 'Trail of Longing': a heart felt, witty, and riveting story of how two souls find a way to make their fairy-tale love into one of reality. For those who have had the pleasure of reading the first two 'Trail' books, then you already have a grasp on what Emma Sutton is like. A kind-hearted woman who loves children, and dreams of wanting nothing more than a love like the one her parents have been gifted with; that is, until she is in the presence of Dean Meyers, then she is all tongue-tied and shyness, but that will never stop her from cherishing every moment she is with him. Dr. Dean Meyers (or Dean, as Emma prefers it) is a man traveling west from a haunting past; one he only wishes to leave buried and stayed buried. The trail doesn't seem as tedious when he has the opportunity to see Emma every day, and he has hopes one day that Emma just might be his forever. Unfortunately, like all love stories, certain unfortunate events take place where their love will be tested to such lengths where only two people who are struck with true love can find each other again. As I said before, for those who have read the first two in the trilogy, then you already know that you are in for a real treat; but for those who haven't do not worry, you don't even have to read them in order just get it, read it, and fall in love with 'Trail of Longing over and over again.

This is the third book in the Hot on the Trail series & if you've not read the others in the series don't worry as this is a stand alone novel but you will have met some of the characters briefly before in the other books.

I was looking forward to this one as we learned from the previous book that the main female character in this book Emma Sutton, has unrequited feelings for dashing young doctor Dean Meyers whom she has admired from afar.

Emma is a shy girl & Dean has noticed her but hadn't met properly until the wagon train they are on is hit by a Tornado & Emma gets hurt.
Emma & very overbearing mother go with Dr Meyers to another way station to recuperate & wait for another wagon train to take them on their journey to Portland, Oregon.
However, on this new wagon train is an old acquaintance of Dean's a so called Dr himself, Russ Sandifer, but is now trying to sell his own 'cure all' remedy and destroy Dean's reputation by slanderous remarks to all & sundry including Emma & her mother & also try to get Emma away from Dean & into his arms!
Will Russ succeed or will true love between Dean & Emma win the day?

Another well written book by Merry Farmer, sets the scene very well & you feel like you are actually there on the trail & the characters become very real to you especially if you've read all the series from the start. She sure knows her stuff! Highly recommended if you like historical romance & give it a go if you've never read it before, it's a winner !!

Sweet, kind, gentle, healing – that is what Dean sees in lovely Emma – she calms him. Handsome, well-built, charming, kind – that is what Emma sees in Dean – she is sweet on him. Obnoxious, bossy, single-minded – that is Emma’s mother – she cares only to get Emma married off to her idea of the best matrimonial prospect. And…where do Emma and Dean meet – on a trip to Oregon via wagon train.
This is a fun historical novel with some of the same characters mentioned in the first two books making an appearance in this one. New characters that will appear in book 4, Katie and Aiden, make their appearance. There are injuries, a snake oil salesman, music, dancing, Indians, decisions to be made, friendship, family and romance. The happily ever after happens in the end and the hook is set for book 4.

This was an enjoyable read though I did at times get tired of Emma’s inability to stand up to her mother. I also wondered what happened to make Emma go from tongue tied throughout most of the book to talkative at the end. There is one sexual encounter in the book toward the end so if you are against that type of scene – fair warning.

Thank you to the author and her marketing agency for the copy of this book to read and review.

Book three of the Hot on the Trail series.

I received an copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Emma has had a crush on Dr. Dean Meyers since the start of the wagon train. They exchange glances along the way and a few moments when they can talk to each other. Which Emma finds hard. She is tongue tied and shy around Dean. It doesn't help that Emma's mother tries her hand at matchmaking every chance she gets and most of the time ends of embarrassing Emma. After the tornado hits the wagon train. Emma, her mother and Dean stay behind at the way station while Emma's ankle heals. When they join the wagon train that comes along they meet up with Dr. Russ Sandifer. Russ and Dean have a past with medical school and the war.

The book is a sweet love story until about half way when Russ decides he wants Emma and puts down Dean every chance he gets and for some reason Emma's mother falls for it and starts pushing Emma in his direction. I love Dean he is such a sweet, honest man and makes the perfect person for shy Emma. Until Emma learns to stand up to her mother her and Dean will never work out.

The wagon train left the East headed to Oregon with many families headed for a new start after the war. Emma Sutton is very shy, controlled by her Mother and is instantly attracted to Dr. Dean Meyers. When the wagon train encounters a tornado Emma is trapped by a safe on her ankle and Dr. Meyers comes to her aid. Their attraction for each other heats up when Emma, her Mother and Dr. Meyers are left at a cabin to wait for her ankle to heal. They catch the next wagon train only to find that Dr. Meyers nemesis is the Doctor and a fraud. He spreads untrue tails about Dr. Meyers and sets his sights on Emma. Mrs. Sutton is thrilled and approves the new match; however, when Emma is in trouble, Dr. Meyers sets out to rescue her and win her heart. Merry Farmer has written a great story that is the 3rd book in a series. It can also be read alone. I would highly recommend this book to everyone! Merry Farmer is an awesome author.

This was an enjoyable book. I wasn’t sure how much I’d like Emma. She was kind of mousey, and I’m not keen on mousey women. But she really did have a much stronger backbone, and that was a pleasant surprise. Dr. Meyers is a gentle man. I imagine him to be soft-spoken and unassuming, but he’s fierce when it comes to Emma. Again, another surprise, I was happy to find. I really felt bad for Mrs. Sutton after she came clear with her intentions. As a Mom, I can completely understand her desires, though, not her methods. Now, I REALLY liked Katie. She was a riot! And Aiden…that man was too much! He provided mood music! He was a movie scorer before there were movies to score! His tenacity and his humor were exactly what the good doctor needed. The end of the book hinted that there would be a book involving him and...(http://textuallove.wordpress.com/2015...) I have to start off by saying I am sorry to Merry Farmer. i have read a few of her books and thought this was the last one I had read. So, when I found out my mistake I sat down and started reading. It took me about 7 hours to read this book and it was so wonderfully enchanting that I could not put it down. I was so enthralled with with this story and wishing I could punch Russ in the nose for his meddling and conniving. I was humbled by the way she described Dean's experiences during the Civil War and what he had to deal with. She writes a compelling story about how twisting words to make yourself sound better and hurt others into such a dramatic storyline that you just done want to stop until you reach the end. I would very much recommend this book to anyone. I am getting the first two, which I haven't read yet to read so that I can find out Alice's story. Congrats on a beautifully written story.

I am really enjoying the wagon train of characters heading west. I am being introduced to a variety of personalities. Emma is shy but really good with the children. Dean is the doctor on the train traveling west and seems like the catch of the century to some of the mothers traveling also. He has his eye on Emma and hers on him. They get set aside in a way station while her ankle heals from the tornado that hit the pioneers. Her mother acting as chaperone is a woman to be reckoned with. She's loud and obnoxious and looking to climb that social ladder. When the next train comes thru for them to travel with, we get to meet a whole new set of characters. Emma finally gets a best friend but Dean has to deal with an old school chum to tries everything in his power to steal Emma's affections and make Dean look like a coward. I can't wait to read the 4th book in this series and also the 5th as Merry Farmer gave me a hint as what it will be about!

This is the third book in this series. I have enjoyed all of them. I received a ARC of this book in exchange of a honest review.

For Emma and Dr. dean it was love at first sight. The fact that their are on a wagon train didn't pose too much of a problem. They were slowly getting to know each other with some help from her meddling mom. When a tornado goes through it leaves Emma injured and in need of rest to heal. They stay with her Mom at a outpost along the trail and wait for the next wagon train to come.

When the next group comes it is a train of Irish settlers and the group welcomes them with open arms. Dean also meets up with a fellow doctor and enemy. It seems as if everything it has been working towards is destroyed when the other man opens his mouth.

You will have to read this good book to find out what happens and if it will be happily ever after for Emma and Dean.
