⚔️ When Power Passes Through Blood🩸

"Sign of the Raven" by Brynn Danu is a dark epic fantasy novel rooted in blood, inheritance, and perilous magic that scars not only the land, but the souls bound to it. The story unfolds with a purposeful pace, allowing power, violence, and consequence to shape the narrative as much as prophecy and fate.

At its heart prowls a mounting horror - a blood cult moving unseen through the realm, and the unraveling mystery of who stands behind it. Told through multiple character arcs, the tension tightens as fractured loyalties and buried histories surface, each revelation sharpening the dread rather than easing it.

The world of Gardyan unfolds across three distinct ands: Rayan, Nemesava, and Ylvsea. Each is shaped by its own atmosphere, mythology, and moral weight. Woven throughout each district is a distinct anamorphic bloodline: the Blood Fox, the Blood Raven, and the Dragon Blood. This magic is ancient, feral, and irrevocable.

Readers drawn to the moral complexity and ferocity found in the works of Andrzej Sapkowski, John Gwynne, and George R.R. Martin will find much to admire in Danu's storytelling. This is a fantasy where power is inherited, violence has weight, and every choice leaves a legacy.

Oh my god Sign of the Raven completely blew me away. I am still thinking about that entire journey. Brynn Danu has created a beautiful and rough world with the matriarch. This book is one of the intense and dark fantasies I have read in a long time. The way that each page pulls you in more and ties in the story with each turn is really interesting. It keeps you wanting to know what happens next from the very first page, to the very last page. Sign of the Raven has the story that has kept me on the edge of my seat over a book in a long time. I mean Sign of the Raven is just that good! Once you pick it up you cant put it down.

I rated it 3.5 but rounded to 4 for good reads. This is high dark fantasy and heavy in the world building which I am not used to tbh. I still enojoyed the story enough to keep going although I did get confused a few times 😅. There is some dark and intense moments especially towards women so definitely consider that before you read.

I absolutely loved Sign of the Raven by Brynn Danu. From the very first pages, I felt completely immersed in the story, and by the time I reached the end, I was already looking forward to the next book.

The worldbuilding was my favorite part. Everything felt so vivid without being overexplained, and I never had trouble picturing where the characters were. It genuinely felt like I was exploring the world right alongside the characters.

Even though there are a lot of characters, they never felt confusing. The main Characters are incredibly well-developed, and the supporting characters receive exactly the amount of depth they need to make the story feel rich and believable.

Since this is part of a larger series, the story keeps building and leaves you excited to see what comes next. The ending had me counting down the days until I can continue this journey.

I also loved how bits of history and lore were woven naturally into the story. It adds so much depth to the world without ever feeling like you're sitting through a history lesson.

And yes, there are a few spicy moments sprinkled throughout the book, but they never overshadow the plot—they simply complement the relationships and the story.

If you're looking for a beautifully crafted high fantasy with immersive worldbuilding, unforgettable characters, and a story that keeps you invested from beginning to end, I can't recommend Sign of the Raven enough. Just keep in mind that the story explores some darker and emotionally heavy themes, so it's worth checking the content warnings if you're a sensitive reader.

This is exactly the kind of fantasy that leaves you craving more, and I absolutely can't wait for the next installment.

Unique high fantasy masterpiece!

Sign of the Raven absolutely delivers on immersive, high fantasy world-building! From the very first chapter, I felt dropped into a layered, living world filled with ancient lore, political tension, shifting alliances, and magic that feels both dangerous and deliberate.

The detail in this book is honestly its greatest strength. The cultures, belief systems, and power structures aren’t just mentioned — they’re woven deeply into the story.

The magic system is intricate and rooted in lore rather than convenience, which I appreciated. It demands your attention — this isn’t a “skim and vibe” fantasy. You have to settle in and let the world unfold around you. And once you do? It’s incredibly rewarding.

The strong, badass female characters weren’t just strong — they were strategic, sharp, and unbreakable; they carried grief like armour and still chose courage, and I felt every ounce of that power in my bones

At times, the pacing slows under the weight of the world-building, which is why this sits at a solid 4 stars for me instead of 5. There are sections where the detail slightly overtakes the momentum. But honestly, for high fantasy lovers who crave depth and complexity, that won’t necessarily be a downside.

If you love detailed high fantasy worlds that feel expansive and carefully constructed (think George R. R. Martin) this one is absolutely worth the journey.

Wir befinden uns in Gardyan, einer Welt, die durch einen Schleier von der menschlichen Welt getrennt ist. In Gardyan wird Macht über Blutlinien weitergegeben: den Fuchs, den Drachen und den Raben. Die Blutlinien verleihen den Protagonisten spezielle Kräfte und bringen Vorsehungen, Schicksale und Flüche mit sich.
Aufgewühlt wird der Frieden zwischen den Blutlinien durch den bestialischen Mord an den Ryeda Schwestern. Eine Gruppe von Helden bricht auf, um die Morde zu untersuchen und den Täter zu finden und stößt dabei auf etwas viel Größeres.

Rezension:
Mystisch, düster und geheimnisvoll ist die Welt von Gardyan. Besonders die Sprünge zwischen der Welt der Sterblichen und Gardyan sowie die historischen Anspielungen fand ich sehr gelungen. Tolles Worldbuilding!
Der Schreibstil ist sehr anspruchsvoll, manchmal fast lyrisch. Fans von komplexer Dark Fantasy, die viele Erzählperspektiven mögen, sollten Danus Werk auf jeden Fall lesen.
Ich persönlich habe etwas gebraucht, um in die Geschichte richtig einzusteigen und die Beziehungen der Protagonisten untereinander zu verstehen. Daher für mich "nur" 4 Sterne. Wie sich die Storyfäden am Ende aber zusammenfügen, ist meisterhaft.
Für mich ein sehr starkes Fantasy Buch.

I absolutely enjoyed every bit of this story, from the opening prelude right through to the final chapter. The world feels vast, rich, and so thoughtfully built. You can really feel the care put into its lore, magic system, and every little detail in-between!

The mystery and tension hooked me instantly, keeping me on edge and refusing to leave a chapter unfinished. The characters are layered and complex. The female characters especially stood out to me.

The writing is stunning, vivid, and brings every scene to life beautifully. It’s not a quick light read, and was so rewarding to read and more. It was rather refreshing in all honesty.

If you love deep world building, complex characters, and fantasy with darker themes, this one’s for you! I would recommend this to fellow Game of Thrones fans! ⚔️🐉

The Sign of the Raven was such an exciting read! It was action packed, steamy, dark, and all the things you want in a book. I was so thankful to be apart of the author’s team before publishing. The timelines and interwoven stories really pay off and I am looking forward to reading more as the story continues!

I went into this expecting a casual little fantasy read and instead got hit with dragons, ravens, foxes, and massive political drama over a literal triple murder. Immaculate. The absolute best part of this book is how the women literally run the world. they are gorgeous, lethal, and politically terrifying. there’s this one specific scene where a mother is getting ready to absolutely obliterate people in combat while holding her kid? Mother is mothering.the only reason it’s losing a star is because the world-building is heavy. My last two brain cells were fighting for their lives trying to keep track of the multiple POVs, the random time jumps, and the veil between the mortal world and Gardyan. it doesn’t hold your hand at all, so the beginning was a little bit of a struggle.

So well thought out and detailed, I was beyond impressed. The plot was clearly thought through and completely hooking with the element of mystery I loveee 🤭the characterization and development was next level. I loved seeing it all come alive and watching these awesome characters develop in a great way. My favourite element was probably the writing style though, so poetic and meaningful and thoughtful! Highly recommend to all lovers of fantasy, folklore, and epic fantasy. It’s a complex story and hard to follow at times, but the complexity & level of detail definitely made the book and worldbuilding so interesting! Very impressed with this one, as a huge lover of all things fantasy & epic fantasy. Overall, great book! 👏👏

Recommended to readers who enjoy dark, epic fantasy that has distinct complex lands, bloodlines, and epic building tension from page 1. Brynn writes with such heart and passion that you can feel everything building and vividly picture each scene.

There is strong, remarkable female representation in this book, dark themes are explored and it is absolutely stunning inside and out. The covers are incredible and the writing style is so unique that you will be drawn in and fully immersed in the story. This isn't a story you read in a day. This is epic, complex and fantastical. Read with purpose. Read with intention. Brynn develops each and every character, each and every land as well as every bloodline and bit of magic brilliantly. Don't rush through. Savor it.

If Game of Thrones energy is your thing… you need to pick this up.

This is one of those books where you don’t just read it… you step into it.

Sign of the Raven absolutely delivers on immersive, high fantasy world-building in a way that demands your full attention .... and honestly.... I loved that. This is not a “skim and vibe” kind of fantasy. You have to settle in, pay attention, and let the world unfold around you piece by piece.

And once it does? It’s incredibly rewarding.

The world feels layered, lived-in, and intentional. The cultures, belief systems, and power structures aren’t just background noise .... they’re woven directly into the story in a way that makes everything feel heavier, more real, and more dangerous.

The magic system especially stood out to me. It’s rooted in ancient bloodlines .... feral, inherited, and not something that can be used lightly. It feels earned, not convenient, which made every moment of magic hit harder.

And the women in this book?
Strong isn’t even the word. They are strategic, sharp, emotionally scarred, and still choosing to move forward anyway. The kind of strength that isn’t loud .... it’s unbreakable. And I felt that.

There’s also this underlying tension running through the story with political intrigue, fractured loyalties, and a very unsettling blood cult threading everything together. It’s the kind of slow-building dread that keeps you locked in because you KNOW something bigger is coming.

That being said, the pacing does slow at times under the weight of all the detail. There are moments where the world-building slightly overtakes the momentum but that's ok.

If you love expansive, morally complex, high fantasy with depth..... the kind that feels like a full world rather than just a story - this is absolutely worth the journey.

Okay but Sign of the Raven?? This is that fantasy that makes you WORK… but in a good way.

From the first chapter, you’re dropped into this massive, layered world ... different lands, cultures, bloodlines, politics .... and it does NOT hold your hand. You have to pay attention. But once it clicks.... Oh it CLICKS.

The magic system is all rooted in blood ... like ancient, dangerous, tied-to-who-you-are magic that actually feels powerful and a little terrifying.

And the whole story is wrapped in political tension, shifting alliances, and this very unsettling blood cult situation happening in the background…so you’re constantly like “who can I trust”.

And the characters...especially the women .....they are strong in that quiet, unbreakable way. Carrying grief, making hard choices, playing the long game… I loved them.

But I will say the pacing can feel a little slow at times because of how detailed everything is. This is not a fast read. This is a sit down, lock in, and absorb it kind of fantasy.

And if you love that and want something immersive, complex, and a little dark....You’re going to eat this up.

This book is incredibly immersive, and the author does a fantastic job of setting the scene and writing in a way that you can envision the world and each character. There is mystery, suspense and magical elements. I really enjoyed this read and would highly recommend!

Unfortunately i only got about 10% in before deciding to not finish. It just was not for me. The writing style was very hard to read and uses a lot of passive phrases that are hard to follow. The scenes are very gory and graphic and everything is sexually coded which may appeal to some people.
