Boiling Gap, by Wendell Cooper ; modern gothic horror. Frausten Khubler, "Frost", leaves veterinarian school a broken young man after losing his father in a brutal winter storm. Unable, and unwilling to forgive himself for his father's death, Frost travels to Boiling Gap not in search of a new life, but a peaceful death. What awaits in Boiling Gap, however, is far from the eternal sleep he had imagined. Death and madness have called him to Boiling Gap Animal shelter which rests above a cursed coal mine. Will he regain the will to live in time to save himself from the unimaginable horrors that lie below?
I picked this one up because it was on the list of intentions for the BoH (FB group) indie brawl and went in entirely blind which was a good thing since I probably wouldn't have picked it up if I had read the blurb (I'm really tapped out on books that deal with parental loss and the word gothic is a red flag for me since 9 times out of 10 I'm bored silly by gothic lit). Given the number of things it had going against it with me it's surprising how much I actually enjoyed this one.
Just a word of warning, if animal death is a trigger for you approach with caution this one absolutely obliterated me with it.
