The Charles Johnson Memorial Hospital was one of the better known South African mission hospitals in the years between 1950 and 1980. That was because of its charismatic medical superintendent, Dr Anthony Barker and his wife Margaret. The Charlie J, as it was known, was a very unusual hospital with very significant achievements.
