Liberty’s Edge Book V of the Nicholas Cruwys Series
1785. The world has changed, but not the men who must steer it. In the wake of the honours and hazards of Crescent’s Edge—his presentation before the King, his hard-won command of Miranda, and the favour of Lord Howe—Captain Nicholas Cruwys finds that peace demands a subtler courage than war.
The Admiralty sends Miranda westward into the uncertain calm that follows revolution. There, amid the new commerce between Britain, America, and the islands between, Cruwys encounters the unfinished business of privateers turned merchants, enslaved men fighting for liberty’s meaning, and rivals who wage their battles in corridors rather than seas.
At home, London’s drawing rooms prove no less perilous than any quarterdeck. Old alliances shift, new ambitions stir, and his bond with Caroline Carlisle deepens into a choice that will bind his public honour to his private heart.
From St. James’s Palace to the turbulent Caribbean, Liberty’s Edge continues Nicholas Cruwys’s odyssey through the uncertain peace of a world remade.
Meticulously researched and charged with moral tension, this is historical fiction in the finest tradition—where seamanship, conscience, and the quiet test of character matter more than gunfire itself.
For readers of Patrick O’Brian and C.S. Forester, a story of command, consequence, and the perilous calm that follows triumph.
Adrian Westbrooke has long been a student of the sea and of the men and ships that sailed it. His interest in the great age of sail led him into naval history — the voyages of discovery and the long wars that set the Royal Navy against the fleets of France, Spain, and Holland. An experienced offshore and cruising sailor, he brings to his work both a lifetime of reading and a sailor's own feel for wind, weather, and the rhythms of life under sail, even if on a far smaller scale than the great ships of the line. His writing pays close attention to seamanship, gunnery, and life ashore, giving readers as clear a picture of that vanished world as we can reasonably hope for today.
In a crowded genre, the Cruwys series shines due to a cast of characters and plots that are filled out with craft and a sure touch. Can we hope for more books please
I was not sure if I I cared for Westbrook’s style or story, but this book proved me a huge fan. It was un-put- up-downable! Fast paced. Intricate. Filled with intrigue and action. Terrific read. I also found I admired the values that Westbrooke espouses thru his character Cruwys. I hope that I might be as decent and grounded a man as Nicholas should I ever be faced with such difficult character challenges. Hoe things play out speaks volumes about Westbrooke’s character. Great book.
This series follows the life of a young man through his Naval Career. His sea battles and his love of two women and the conflict between love of them and the love of the Sea. I enjoyed all five of the books of this series.
Absolutely brilliant story. I look forward to yet more stories from Adrian Westbrook’s in due course. It been a pleasure reading this series. Only a few typo’s here and there.
This series continues to please as we follow Nicholas to Americas' shores. His covert work creates enemies as he takes down a crooked cabal that reaches from the Caribbean to the Admiralty. His success is notable, but is not visibly nor officially recognized. I am looking forward to the next episode.
These novels force the characters through twisted loyalties at home and abroad. I have enjoyed the whole series. Each novel stands well on its own, but they are best read in order.
I’m always amazed by the creativity of such a talented author. It was necessary to have the series to tell the complete story I’m sorry to be at the end. I now will look forward to other Westbrook stories
An exciting well told story. A frigate captain with a broadly stated mission supported by the service and some English politicians. A strong blow against the evils and vice in the Caribbean. Justice prevails!
This is a well written naval series about a young English navy sailor and his trials. The characters are well developed with a storyline that has plenty of action and moves along, well written!
Usually when reading a series of books, I find the first book is very good then quality drops considerably with each new book. Not so with this series! I have read 5 books in this series and found each one spellbinding. Very well done.
This is a good but overdrawn tale. Much meandering of the storyline making it a long read. Personally I skipped ahead quite a bit and don’t feel that I missed much.
The story develops well in elegant stages. The plot is comprehensive and coherent. It keeps you engaged throughout. The characters continue to mature in th series
Whilst the writing is very good - descriptive passages are well done - the plot lines have become so obvious and inevitably tidy that I almost wish some normal, real world disaster would occur to upset the tramlines of heroic success that Cruwys rides.
