I really like Casey, and I want to get my shit together for him. To prove I’m responsible. Reliable.
No more thieving, no more drama and no more running away from my problems.
Then Jewel Fairchild Spencer exploded back into my life.
Jewel.
Ugh.
This dramatic, unhinged omega was supposed to be dead. He’s the only person who’s ever broken my heart. Now he's back and he's obsessed with me.
What’s worse; Jewel is spiraling, unstable… and charging straight toward disaster.
Of course it’s me who’s stuck helping him.
He’s dragging in collateral, too. My sweet Casey, who can’t say no to anyone in need) and Hugo the delicious, grumpy alpha daddy who might be the only one Jewel will listen to.
Now I’m caught between the omega who can’t let me go, the alpha who won’t admit he craves us, and the beta who doesn’t believe he’s wanted.
The responsible thing is to refuse to get involved in Jewel's mess. But honestly?
I’ve never been good at responsible.
and I might be a bit too addicted to Jewel’s chaos to let him go…

Beta Bites is an MMFM, BOBA spicy, high‑drama omegaverse romance full of claws‑out arguments, heat, and the addictive kind of chaos.
In the author's words, from the book introduction:
"DISCLAIMER: THIS BOOK IS NOT 'ALL ABOUT HER'
Yes, Jade is the main character. But she shares the spotlight with the others in the book.
I will not apologize for Jewel. He's whiny, needy and extra. I absolutely adore him but (heads up) if you don't like him off the bat, I doubt you will by the end."
Unfortunately, that information wasn't anywhere you could see it BEFORE reading the book.
I didn't even have an issue with Jewel's personality. I tend to love a sexy, sassy androgynous MMC.
The problem for me is positioning a man as a co-lead character alongside the FMC. I want the woman to be the center in a mixed gender romance book.
Beta Bites by Katy Black was an enjoyable read, even if it didn't end up being a favorite of mine. The humor, banter, and overall pack dynamic kept me engaged, and Jewel's chaotic energy definitely made for some entertaining moments. He was unapologetically himself, and his determination to get what he wanted created plenty of fun and memorable scenes.
My biggest issue was Casey. While he was sweet and easy to root for, I found him to be a bit of a one-note character. I kept waiting for him to be given more depth, development, or a stronger personal arc, but it never quite happened. To be clear, I wasn't looking for him to become as unhinged or unstable as any of the others... or anything crazily drastic, I just wanted to see more layers to his character beyond being a one note sweetheart of the group. He felt like he had the potential for more growth than what we ultimately got.
That said, I still enjoyed the story overall. The characters were entertaining, the relationships kept me invested, and the book held my attention throughout. While Casey's characterization kept it from being a full four-star read for me. But still better than a three star so will be going with 4 <3
This book delivered unhinged in spades! Who doesn’t love an unhinged male omega?!? Jewel was chaos incarnate and I was here for it!
We had Jade, beta FMC, who was burned by Jewel in the past and doesn’t really want to give him a second chance.
Jewel, omega MMC, who is relentless in trying to win back Jade in his own way. While he is also dead set on making a splash in their world and stirring up chaos. He also knows who and what he wants and won’t stop until he has it!
Casey, beta MMC, our super sweet love who just wants to be loved but doesn’t think he deserves it. I just wanted to keep him wrapped up in a hug and tell him how perfect he is!
Hugo, alpha MMC, our resident daddy alpha. The only alpha that Jewel likes the smell of. He was burned in the past with his condition and doesn’t think he can ever trust anyone to join a pack or not hurt anyone when he goes into a rut.
I appreciated the humor and banter in this book so much! Spice was great too! Only minus is not getting to see Hugo and Casey really together. I know they will come together at some point in their future as this didn’t feel like a true MMFM book but more like an MMMF book.

Great as a standalone, amazing in the series Tropes: Second Chance, the boyfriends are boyfriends, BBAO, Golden Retriever, Black Cat, Daddy Alpha If you love a diva, you'll love Jewel. He definitely might be a bit much for some. I absolutely adored his character's no apology personality. He knows what he wants and goes after it, and that includes the pack he wants. Jade, his beta friend who he once rejected to protect, Casey, the sweetheart beta guard, and Hugo, the alpha with a rut issue. Jade is a no nonsense beta thief, turned bodyguard/investigator. She is determined to keep her distance from Jewel after he crushed her before. But she is definitely interested in Casey and Hugo. I really enjoyed the banter and spark that Jewel brings to this book. And the down to earth attitude that Jade brings. As part of the Poisonverse series, this can still be read as a standalone, but I really love the cameos from a couple of the other book characters, and I prefer to read them in order myself.
It took a minute to remember Jewels, Jade, Casey and Hugo but it all came back real quick. Jewel is a brat/diva and just chaotic and the plot/his way of chasing after his pack members and bonding them reflects this. I adored Casey, he is just a sweetheart who had a bad run in life; so glad he got his happy ending. Jade is just as headstrong as Jewel in certain circumstances but loved her dynamic in the pack and how hard she tried to fight off Jewel's advances. Hugo is so a giant teddy and enjoyed his possessive nature, definitely lived up to his nickname.
The plot as always when it comes to the poisonverse kept me interested and wanting the baddies to get their just deserts. The pacing of relationship development and plot felt good and the spicy scenes were well written. Really enjoyed this new addition to the poisonverse!
While this is technically a standalone, Jewel and Jade first appear in “Pretty When She Breaks,” and the story will make much more sense if you read it first.
Jade has had it with her ex — ever since Jewel came back into her life, he has done nothing but work her nerves.
And he can’t even be bothered to apologize for disappearing for years, and letting everyone think he was dead.
Jewel, on the other hand, is back with bells on — and he’s not taking no for an answer, he’s going to get Jade back, and build himself the perfect pack in the process.
Whether they like it or not.
Jewel is an obnoxious delight, he’s hilarious and catty and over the top, and Jade has her hands full trying to keep him from turning her life into a rolling disaster.
But he’s SO much fun, and he’s absolutely determined to win her over again!
I'm so happy that I got to read this book. Honestly, in the OV world, I absolutely love betas and what they bring to a pack. So here's a story where there's not one Beta, but 2, with a very unique omega who's been through so much and knows what he wants in this life. When you add in an alpha who believes he doesn't deserve a pack, well lets just say they'll be thankful there's 2 betas to ride this storm with. It's such a fantastic story, and I'm so glad that it's part of the poisonverse because Katy Black told this story perfectly!
Beta Bites was a wonderful addition to the Poisonverse world! Jewel was SO over the top and extra - I loved his big sparkling personality. He was the perfect balance to Jade's tougher exterior. Casey was an absolute cinnamon roll and Daddy Hugo, of course, was my favorite. This was angsty, fun, and chaotic in the best way! Really enjoyed!
Katy did a wonderful job giving us Jewel’s story. Not your typical Omega, and don’t forget those Betas Jade and Casey! They are opposites but complement each other and the pack so well. As always, check the content warnings, but if you love the Poisonverse this won’t disappoint!
I kind of wish there was more drama or angst before Jade just decided that they should all be together. There wasn't enough tension because they all just went along with it so I wish there was more than a half-hearted push and pull dynamic.
