A hockey player and a grad student are on thin ice until they meet their match in this sexy romance by USA Today bestselling author Lana Ferguson.
Jack Baker is on top of the world now that he’s back on the rink where he belongs. But the high comes crashing down when he reinjures his arm immediately following his return to the ice, and this time, he might never be able to play again. After a lifetime as the strong, happy hockey guy whose sister needed him, Jack is left questioning everything he knows about himself.
Abigail Thompson feels like she’s hit rock bottom. It’s only been a few months since the massive scandal that finally severed the cord between her and her narcissistic father. And now, in her last weeks of grad school, she’s been kicked out of her building with very short notice. The last thing she wants to do is ask her half-brother for help after what she’s put him through, but it’s looking like his best friend’s spare room might be her only choice.
Jack is flighty, flirty, and a little full of himself—all the things Abby’s learned to avoid in men. However, spending every day together breaks the ice between them, and she starts to realize that Jack might not be who he seems. It’s possible that maybe, just maybe, he might be struggling as much as she is. Soon, confiding in each other leads to falling into bed, and this fling will either play with their hearts—or score them the ultimate goal of love.
Lana Ferguson will always be an auto buy author for me. She just knows how to write a romance 🥰😍💖
This hockey romance was so cute! I devoured this in one sitting because it was that good. And Jack? I really freaking loved him. Easily one of my favorite MMCs.
I am going to need the audiobook asap when it releases!
💖 What to Expect • Hockey player MMC • Grad student FMC • Forced proximity • Hurt x comfort • Friends to lovers _ _ _ _
📅 Pub Date: July 7, 2026 Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group, Berkley, and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
I relate to Jack so much in this book! Thank you Lana for writing him and sharing him with the world. Abby was also a delight and it was so heartwarming to see her walls come down!
Jack and Abby’s relationship was everything I love in a romance. Their dynamic worked so beautifully together and felt incredibly natural. Abby’s quiet strength and seriousness paired perfectly with Jack’s high energy, golden retriever personality, and watching them balance each other was so satisfying. The chemistry built slowly and intentionally, which made it even better.
The close proximity roommate setup allowed their connection to develop organically, and I loved how their friendship naturally grew into something deeper without ever feeling rushed. Their bond felt genuine, emotional, and unforgettable.
Beyond the romance, the emotional layers of this story really stood out to me. Jack’s journey through injury, identity, and responsibility added so much depth to his character, while Abby’s struggles with family and belonging made her so easy to root for. Together, they found comfort, understanding, and healing in each other in a way that felt honest and heartfelt.
This was a really enjoyable, solid romance that I’m glad I read, and Jack and Abby are a couple I’ll definitely remember.
Thank you so much Berkley, NetGalley, and Lana Ferguson for this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
A huge shoutout to the author, publisher, and Edelweiss for the chance to read this ARC! I am obsessed with Lana Ferguson’s romances, especially the hockey romances 😍 this was so good!!
The plot of this one, a hockey playboy pining after a girl who isn’t interested/guarded, wasn’t anything ground breaking..? Not that I didn’t enjoy it but with how many hockey romances are out there, this one doesn’t stand out as super unique.
However, the most unique part of the book was some of the interpersonal problems the characters were dealing with. It felt relatable on many levels, including anxiety, finding meaning in life, and complex family relationships.
Was this book a fun ride? Absolutely! I recommend if you’re looking for a romance you can fly through and that will probably make you feel warm and fuzzy.
3.5⭐️ Thanks to the publisher for an advanced copy of this one!
Who cares. What is different. When is it over. Where is the plot. Why did I request this.
This is a prime example of a book that gives us nothing new or notable. These two had no chemistry and instead of building on that we just got spice. Jack was just recycling lines I’ve read too many times before and Abby’s entire personality was her daddy issues.
It felt like an endless loop: problem, vent sesh with Abby playing therapist, hookup, repeat. I speed read this just to be done.
Lana Ferguson's "The Final Score" is an engaging, funny, surprisingly sentimental best-friend's-little-sister, grumpy sunshine (she's the grump!) hockey romance with plenty of self-discovery and sneaking around. The FMC, Abby, doesn't much care for Jack, the MMC. He is best friends with her older half-brother, Ian, and they are on the same hockey team. Abby has been through a lot in her life, and she has erected some massive walls and a serious, grumpy facade to cover the pain she has endured. Underneath it all, though, she's been subjected to a lot of hurt and trauma, and she has yet to work it out. Jack recently broke his arm, which derailed his hockey playing for a while. After another injury with more serious complications, his entire career is on the line, but he won't give up playing for anything because it's what he thinks is all he has in life. When a pipe bursts in her apartment, Jack offers Abby the spare room at his place, and she takes him up on the offer since she's currently sleeping on her brother's couch. As the two spend more and more time together in close proximity, slowly but surely, Abby's sky-high walls start to come down little by little, and she and Jack become friends and eventually "bedroom buddies." Jack learns about Abby's trauma from the fallout of her now non-existent relationship with her father, and Abby discovers that Jack has anxiety attacks and doesn't feel good enough to be or do anything outside of hockey. He doesn't think he is worthy of good things. Their issues help them connect as they begin to help each other heal, and as they heal, they begin to fall in love. Jack and Abby are a good "opposites attract" pairing as Jack is basically a golden retriever, and Abby is a black cat. They complement one another well, though I could have used a *bit* more yearning. Their mental health and trust issues are similar, but also different, and they learn some valuable lessons about each other, and themselves, along the way to falling in love. It wasn't expected, but isn't that the best kind? I really like how Ferguson takes her time getting Abby and Jack to fall for one another. Some readers might find the pacing a bit slow, but I didn't. The witty banter and quick quips in this book made me laugh out loud on several occasions. Abby starts out the book kind of bitter and resentful, but Jack's sunshine-y personality rubs off on her as she starts to miss his jokes, demeanor, and, well, *other* things. I wonder if some readers might think there's not enough hockey playing/SPORTS! in this book, but to me, it made sense because of Jack's injury. This book might not bring anything new to the table, but it's a good enough time.
Thank you to NetGalley, Lana Ferguson, and Berkley Publishing Group for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
I have no shame in admitting I was feral for this book. Lana Ferguson is an auto-buy author for me. And as soon as I heard Jack and Abby were getting their own book, immediate grabby hands activated. So right off the bat big thank you to NetGalley & Berkley Publishing for giving me a ARC to read and review.
A little back story for those who don’t know. Technically The Final Score is the second book in this duology. We meet Jack & Abby as the siblings to the FMC/MMC in The Game Changers. I knew as soon as I met both in book one that they needed their own story. And I’m so pumped that Lana graced us with their amazing heartfelt journey. So with that in mind I know the publishers will say you can read this as a standalone. However, I disagree so take my advice and read The Game Changers first. It’s important you learn about Jack & Abby’s backstory before you meet them front and center in their own book.
Now that we got my disclaimers out of the way. The best part the review! And I’ll get straight to the point I freaking loved this book. Honestly I think I loved it more than the first one. Jack & Abby are both phenomenal relatable characters. They both have their traumas they are working through and they bring the absolute best out of each other.
Jack, hands down is one of my all-time favorite Lana Ferguson men. When I tell you that boy is down bad for Abby, it’s no joke. On top of that he’s such a golden retriever boyfriend and I’m all here for it. What I absolutely love most about him and his relationship with Abby is he doesn’t have to put up a facade with her. The world sees him as the joking funny guy. But Abby gives him the strength to bring down his walls and be his most genuine self.
Then we Abby. This girl has been through the absolute ringer. But I have so much respect for how strong and resilient her character is. To top it off the girl is absolutely hilarious her banter with Jack had me giggling the entire way through.
Overall, I can’t recommend this book enough Lana has truly done it again. And I can’t wait to own a trophy copy when it releases later this summer!
I received an advanced digital copy from NetGalley for a review.
Lana Ferguson can do no wrong. This heart melting and funny story was just what I needed.
Jack is besties with Ian from Game Changer and big brother to Dee. Abby is Ian’s little sister that we met in GC. She is our sweet and smart FMC who’s still dealing with the issues with her Dad and learning her new family dynamics. She’s close with Dee and Ian but can’t keep sleeping on the lovebirds couch forever while her apartment gets renovated. She deals with Jacks sarcastic flirting with sassy comebacks but really they have an acquaintance type of relationship.
So when Jack offers his extra room to her for some much needed space, she surprisingly takes him up on it. Then there friendship blooms.
Once they get to know each other and help with their own personal struggles, they start to see maybe they had each other judged all wrong.
I love Jacks golden retriever traits & he is a great and funny best friend for Abby. And she helps him work through his past hurt and start focusing on his own wants (using a little of her psych degree). It’s really well done in a sweet & beautiful way.
Probably my favorite thing was the “he falls first” troupe. You gotta love when a man is all in. The role reversal with Abby’s past issues holding her back and not being quite ready to admit to her feelings was a fun take, kinda of like she played the “guy” in this one. Jack being a player and then trying to win over the date averse Abby was hilarious and cute, their banter had me kicking my feet smiling.
And the spice was🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Lana always brings the heat and Jack was everything in a Book boyfriend. 🫶🏻
I will ready anything LF writes! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5-stars every time! Don’t skip this one 😻
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I can confidently say I will be reading more written by her! Thank you to Berkley Romance and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of the advanced copy of this book.
I love a hockey romance, and this was such a delight! There was a perfect balance of plot and spice. I enjoyed the evolution of how the FMC and MMC saw each other and themselves as the story developed. It was so sweet watching them support each other from the beginning of their relationship as unlikely roommates. The inevitable sexual tension that comes with the roommates-to-lovers trope was very well-written. Such a great blend of sweet and spicy!
The mental health representation in this book was so well-written. We love a medicated MMC who slowly learns how to be vulnerable and authentic. The similarities and differences between the traumatic pasts of the FMC and MMC, while both resulting in adults with their own flavor of trust issues, created a beautiful foundation for them to become each other’s safe space.
The exploration of what makes life meaningful beyond just someone’s career or singular passion really resonated with me. It was lovely to witness especially the MMC discover how you can be more than one thing, and that maintaining connections with the people you love is so valuable.
I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys reverse grumpy/sunshine, roommates to lovers, “f*ck it,” spice, and hockey romance.
4.5 stars thanks net galley and Berkley for the ARC (:
this dynamic worked beautifully together which shocked me because I didn't like the idea of a brother dating his sisters boyfriends sister... but that was definitely overshadowed by Abby's soft and seriousness mixed with Jack's hyperactive personality. They really balanced each other very well and I was obsessed with them especially once they started getting it awnnnnn. This is definitely going to be a relationship I'll always remember as one that had a seriously perfect connection. No doubt that these two liked each other, LOVED each other!
But this book def made me a little annoyed by Lila and Ian from the first book in this series. They were too judgy and overbearing which ive seen happen to me in my personal life so it pissed me off because of the connection I had to it.
Also maybe could have toned it down with Jack saying Abby looked like Ian in the beginning of the book because like WEIRD!! but luckily it never happens again past like 25%
Another thing.... I'm saying this as a natural blond but he describes her pubes as "blond curls" and I just don't believe that exists. I have never seen blond pubes in my damn life. Please correct me if I'm wrong but this took me so outttt
But anywayssss I love a good roommate romance and ofc a hot hockey player with mega golden retriever vibes and a girl who just eats it up
This was a solid romance novel, *particularly* if you like your spice early (before the 40% mark) and often. I thought the Final Score ended stronger than it began, which is basically unheard of for a romance novel!
I, personally, like a slow burn with lots of tension, so I would have liked it if the will-they-won’t-they would have lasted a little longer. Instead we jumped right in to hooking up. So the beginning of the story, while fun, was a little repetitive: hook up, be worried about X & Z, hook up, repeat.
The Final Score’s strength is Jack. His past trauma and current injury are the heart of the story. I adored him. He felt very fully formed.
I haven’t read book one in this series and I think if I had, it would have added even more to my love and understanding of both characters, but particularly Abby.
In a truly shocking turn of events, I really loved the 3rd act tension (who am I??? And I feeling alright??). I thought it was valid, handled maturely, and wrapped up quickly. It really made me appreciate this book and the characters more.
I read this in one day while I was home sick with a cold. It’s very readable and the writing is addictive. I would definitely recommend this is you’re wanting something a little smutty.
I’m excited to dip my toe into her werewolf romances in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publish Group for the advanced reader copy!
Another fun romance from Lana Ferguson! I always enjoy her books and this one was no exception. The Final Score is a sequel of sorts to The Game Changer, and The Game Changer is actually one of the two books by Lana I haven’t read yet. Needless to say, that did not deter my enjoyment at all! In fact, it just makes me want to go back and read TGC to get Ian and Lila’s story!
But back to The Final Score, I simply adored this story and the relationship of Abby and Jack. As someone who hides behind humor, I really related to Jack’s character and I absolutely loved how Lana showed mental health/anxiety rep in the MMC. I feel like that’s not something you see as often in romance books and I loved that. Jack was really giving me all the feels, I resonated with him so much! Jack and Abby were super cute together and I really enjoyed their banter. This was such a fun read, not heavy on the sports, and of course had plenty of Lana’s characteristic spicy scenes — which did not disappoint!
I would recommend this read to those who love: brother’s best friend, forced proximity, plenty of banter, roommates, best friend’s sister, lots of spicy spice 🌶️
Thank you Berkley and Netgalley for the eArc and the opportunity to read this book early!
At its core, this story is about something so many of us struggle with, choosing between the thing you love most and protecting your health. That tension runs through every page, and it’s handled with so much care and emotional weight. It never feels forced or dramatic for the sake of it. It feels real.
Jack is such a strong, grounded character. Not just physically strong but emotionally steady, patient, and deeply supportive. He doesn’t overpower the story. He anchors it. Watching him show up for Abby in quiet, consistent ways made their relationship feel authentic and earned.
And the forced proximity? it was done well. It wasn’t just about being stuck together, it created vulnerability. It forced conversations. It built intimacy in a way that felt organic instead of rushed.
Abby and Jack together were everything. Their chemistry felt natural, their emotional connection felt layered, and the way their relationship developed alongside Abby’s internal struggle made it hit even harder.
I adored Jack as a supporting character in The Game Changer so I was excited to hear he would be the MMC in The Final Score! Jack gives off golden retriever sunshine energy, which I love, but we also get to see a more vulnerable and serious side of him that he usually keeps tucked away. Jack struggles with choosing between the thing that makes him feel whole and what is best for his long-term health. Our grumpy black cat, Abby, is his perfect match. She brings out Jack’s more serious side, while Jack helps Abby come out of her shell and gain the confidence to believe she deserves good things. Abby is trying to figure out how to deal with her toxic father while also navigating the aftermath and picking up the pieces. The connection and budding romance between Abby and Jack worked so well. I also appreciated how both characters tried to handle their internal struggles on their own before realizing they needed to ask for help. Those moments came across as very raw and genuine. I liked how the story balanced tender, emotional scenes with fun and sexy banter. It was also fun to see Delilah and Ian as supporting characters and watch their relationship progress. If you loved The Game Changer, I definitely recommend picking this one up!
4.5 🌟 First thank.you to Lana Ferguson, Berkley Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC....these thoughts are my own.
I have read several of Lana's books so far and this may be my favorite.....I just loved Jack and Abby! They had me laughing out loud one minite and almost crying the next. Perfect blend of laughs, feelings and spice.
Abby is this tough grumpy girl who has childhood trauma, trust issues and walls so high that no one can climb them. And Jack is this hyper ball of sunshine who wants to please everyone while he has so much anxiety, a possible career ending injury and a deep sense that he is not good enough. These two characters are flawed but somehow they learn to become vulnerable with eachother and not only heal but become eachother's safe place. I usually do not like 3rd act tension or break ups but this one was done so well and really helped the characters realize what they were building not only together but for themselves as well. The only thing I wished was that the MC's had waited alittle longer to get together for more tension.
I read The Final Score by Lana Ferguson and ended up giving it 3 stars.
Unfortunately, I felt like I was missing a lot of important backstory about Ian and Abby because I hadn’t read The Game Changer first. None of the book review sites I checked clearly showed this as part of a connected series, so I went in expecting a more standalone experience. That left me at a disadvantage, especially since the protagonists from The Game Changer appear frequently throughout this book. There’s quite a bit of history and relationship development that carries over, and without that context, I sometimes felt like I was trying to catch up.
That said, I did enjoy Ian and Abby’s story overall. The writing was strong and engaging, and the characters were entertaining and easy to root for. Once I settled in, I appreciated the chemistry and emotional beats between them.
I just wish I had known to start with the first book—reading in order would definitely enhance the experience.
I’m completely obsessed with this book! From the moment I started, I couldn’t put it down. One minute I was giggling, the next I was tearing up, it had me fully in my feelings the entire time.
Abby comes from a difficult upbringing that left her questioning her worth and building walls around her heart. Now she’s studying to become a therapist, determined to help others break unhealthy patterns and heal from their past.
Enter Jake, her brother’s best friend and the one person she absolutely cannot stand. But when circumstances force them to live together, the tension between them quickly turns into something deeper. Jake slowly chips away at Abby’s walls, showing her that she deserves far more than she believes.
Watching their relationship evolve was so satisfying. The banter, the tension, the vulnerability, it all made their journey feel real and heartfelt. Their enemies-to-lovers dynamic was everything, and I loved seeing them become each other’s safe haven.
There are a lot of hockey romances out there at the moment. But this one was one of the better ones. I think it actually had a little depth to it. However, I’m gonna continue to say that 400 pages is just too long for a romance novel, there are 75 pages that could’ve been shaved off of this. However, our main characters are really interesting because despite his Playboy looks and devil may care attitude, Jack actually is dealing with some pretty difficult anxiety, especially as a new injury may force him off the ice. So when Abby’s living situation becomes untenable and she needs to move in as Jack’s roommate, she’s a little shocked to learn that he’s not exactly who she thought he was. I thought that there were some really deep insights into anxiety and trauma that maybe you don’t usually find in a romance novel. This author is a favor of mine so I was glad to see that this one continued her streak.
Jack's world is shattered when doctors deliver an ultimatum: keep playing the game he loves and risk permanent nerve damage, or walk away from hockey forever. Dealing with the fallout of a difficult childhood and the responsibility of family, Jack is at a breaking point.
His journey intersects with Abby’s, whose own upbringing was defined by her father's resentment and a longing for belonging. The dynamic is further complicated by their shared circle—Abby is the sister of Jack’s best friend, Ian. When the two become roommates, the "close proximity" trope shines, allowing a slow-burn romance to develop naturally.
This was a touching story about healing and finding love in unexpected places. A solid 4-star read for anyone who loves a sports romance with deep emotional stakes.
I was able to read an advanced reader copy of this book thanks to Netgalley.
Ok, first of all, I didn't know I was a girl who was into hockey romances, but here we are.
I LOVE, "The Game Changer," by Lana Ferguson. I was so excited to see she had a second hockey themed romance that it didn't even register that it featured of of my absolute favorite characters from, "The Game Changer," Jack. To say I was excited to read this book is an understatement!
This book was everything I have come to love from Ferguson: it's sexy, funny, smart, entertaining as hell. Ferguson is able to write spicy scenes just as well as she writes touching and dramatic ones.
If you like a little spicy romance, hockey, and a book that makes you laugh out loud, add this one to your TBR list!
Lana Ferguson keeps her readers fed! Be it contemporary, paranormal, omegaverse, or anything else she writes, I will read it. Beyond one title that's audio only at the moment, I've read all the others that I can.
The Final Score for the time being, is my favorite Lana contemporary. The care that is given to Jack and Abby's romance is superb. It's not just the romance, but the attention to detail given to the driving forces in their lives that have molded them into who they are, is done with such intention. I'm hard pressed to think of another contemporary romance that has dealt with what Jack and Abby do and done it so well.
Everything in this book worked for me and it'll be one of my go to summer read recs.
I'm pretty sure Lana puts some kind of drug in all her books cause I just eat it up. I'm not proud to admit that it took me longer than it should have to realize that I've already met all these characters before, especially with how much I loved Ian and Delilah. For as much as I loved Ian and Delilah LOVED Jack and Abby. Jack is just a golden retriever who had me grinning like a fool reading his dialogue and Abby is my grumpy self (though I don't have her childhood trauma). I loved watching these two finally learn to work through their past trauma and fight for what they wanted.
Thank you Lana Ferguson, Berkley Pub, and NetGalley for the eARC!
🩷enemies to lovers 🩷grumpy x sunshine 🩷brothers best friend 🩷forced proximity 🩷mental health rep
The Final Score, by Lana Ferguson was gifted to me as an e book arc by NetGalley. This book is right up my alley. A rom com with grumpy and sunshine and forced proximity. Jack is a hockey player with an injury that could keep him from playing hockey anymore. His best friend's sister Abigail is down on her luck and needs a place to stay while her apartment gets fixed. They are not friends, but Abby needs to take Jack up on his offer. While living together, a friendship forms and we all know how that goes. I really like the development of both main characters in this book and it made me want to go back and read the first book in this series. There was a lot of humor and a lot of spice in this book. I will be adding Lana Ferguson to my authors to read list.
The Final Score unfortunately felt like every other popular romance book to me. Nothing about it will probably stick out to me in the long run. The relationship was lacking throughout the entire book. I never felt any true chemistry that would have made it more interesting. There was a good amount of spice that could have been spent building their relationship in a more real way. Overall, I did not enjoy this one at all. After this and another Lana Ferguson, I think this author might not really be for me.
Thank you NetGalley, Berkley, & Lana Ferguson for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I know I love a good rom-com and this one did not disappoint. There is some great mental health rep, both Jack and Abigail have traumas and insecurities. For most of the book, they are working on them, and of course they find their way in the end. They start off as, Abigail finding Jack to be really annoying. You will find out why they both are the way they are... The book also features Ian and Delilah from "The Game Changer". Together they deal with everyday issues while having you laugh out loud.
Thank Berkley Publishing and Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC. It was much appreciated!
4.5 stars. I love Jack so much. I adore a big, hot goofball with a heart of gold. This is a reverse grumpy sunshine romance with off limits (best friend’s sister/brother’s best friend)and forced proximity. I really enjoyed The Game Changer last year and I’m so happy I loved this book even more. It’s mostly because of Jack. He’s a flirt and quick with the jokes but he’s dealing with career issues and self-worth. Abby has family drama and they are able to lean on each other and treat each other with respect. The chemistry isn’t as good as The Game Changer though. Solid romance from Ferguson. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC
Lana Ferguson does it again!!! I did not expect to fall so hard for these main characters. Jack might seem like a baddy who has it all together with his witty remarks. But on the inside he is riddled with anxiety. I don’t think I’ve ever related so much to an MMC before. This book will have you feeling all the butterflies as Abby and Jack fall for each other. Reading The Game Changer is not necessary to read The Final Score. However, I highly recommend because getting to see how Ian and Lila are doing was a fun bonus!
