Dracula vs Night of the Living Dead

Rate this book
Ever wonder what happens when a vampire bites a zombie? Ever wonder what happens when a zombie bites a vampire? Let author Gerald Simon Jameson answer these questions and more as he takes you on a journey into the twisted world of a rural Pennsylvania!

Not scary enough?

Then let Gerry take you on a journey into the twisted world of a rural Pennsylvania where the dead are coming back to life, another type of dead are coming back to life, the alive are still alive, and all of these factions must come together in the ultimate battle to the (un)death!

After an accident in outer space leaves the eastern seaboard overrun with zombies, a ragtag group of survivors must band together to make it through the night of the aforementioned living dead only to all die and then Dracula shows up! In a saga that spans one-fifth of the American Midwest (the Pittsburgh area is as good as the midwest, I’m sorry…) and some of Maryland, Dracula, with the help of a few unlikely allies, embarks on a desperate quest to track down his missing heart. On the way, he’ll visit the farmhouse that was the sight of that infamous zombie invasion, the White House that was the sight of that infamous zombie invasion (pick your president), and Cleveland. Parallel to the Count’s adventure is Ben’s, the guy who died during the aforementioned night of the aforementioned living dead. With the help of a few unlikely allies, Ben embarks on a desperate quest for the ultimate cure for the various types of (un)death everyone around him is suffering. On the way, he’ll develop a cherished friendship, meet a few more unlikely allies, and find opportunities to seek revenge against all of the many, many people who’ve killed him all over the place. Dracula and Ben’s stories, with the help of a few unlikely allies, then intersect in the ultimate coming together of two horror movie masterpieces, all brought [back to] life in a serviceable Athelas font!

Dracula vs Night of the Living Dead is the perfectly legal mash-up of a couple of perfectly legal public domain properties, where the only thing that ought be illegal is how thoroughly entertained your ass is gonna be!

Aagh, I wanted to love this because in theory it checks all of my favorite boxes. The story opens with a dismembered Dracula’s head on a spaceship where he co-opts the astronauts into helping him reconnect with his body back on Earth. When they land, the zombie events from Night Of The Living Dead are in progress. What a fantastic concept and oh for the hijinks that could ensue right? It was at this point that the core problem hit me. The writing is stilted and many of the sentences are structured in a convoluted way. More simply put, the prose simply does not flow in a way that helps the reader whip through the text and engage with the story as it unfolds. Most especially in the horror genre, you need to grab the reader and propel him into the fictive dream because the topics are already so far-fetched. It should never be a slog to get from one chapter to the next nor to have to read and re-read a sentence to get the meaning. This is such an original concept that would greatly benefit from the deft hands of a savvy editor. Sadly, as it stands this book just didn’t quite meet my expectations. The author deserves much credit for this work and I think with a bit of “re-working” this could be a gem of a book.

Somewhere along the line I think I lost the plot or maybe I wasn't adept enough to wrap my head around the concept. It's entertaining enough I suppose but I kept feeling like it could have been better with a little more work. A bit sluggish. However kudos for an interesting concept I hadn't come across yet!👌🏾.

I really wanted to love this book but for me it fell short. I had a hard time getting into the story and it was a little difficult to follow from the beginning. I did enjoy some of the characters and storyline but for me there was too much at the beginning that felt messy and maybe it was just too much for my easily distracted ADHD brain. The writing was excellent and I enjoyed the humour throughout and I know the author put a lot of work into this story. I don’t think this is a case of a bad book, it’s just a case of the book and I not being compatible. So I think if you do enjoy a wild story of monsters, you should give this a try.

This was such a fun concept! Vampires and zombies, astronauts and the White House... absolutely gonzo. I was here for it.

Unfortunately the writing made it such a slog that I ended up putting the book aside. None of the characters' voices sounded right, with many anachronisms and just plain incorrect words ('city ducks' rather than 'sitting ducks'). Dracula sounded far too contemporary American, and Ben seemed less intelligent than he should.

Also a lot of secondary characters didn't have names at all, which made scenes such as the fight in the White House really confusing.

If this finds a good editor who gets the humour and fun, it could be great. Tons of potential.

Dracula in pieces and zombies are everywhere what a story it was it was bloody and violent and I loved it it’s entertaining so I suggest that even if you are a little bit squeamish then don’t read it but if you do I know that you will enjoy it just like me and I highly recommend reading this book.

What Did I Just Walk Into?
Imagine if George A. Romero and Bram Stoker met in a Waffle House at 3 a.m. after a comic-con and decided to write fanfiction together on a napkin. That napkin would be Dracula vs Night of the Living Dead. Mr. Gerald Simon Jameson gleefully rips open the coffin lid of copyright law and dances through a blood-spattered cornfield of parody, chaos, and undead hijinks. Zombies meet vampires, space accidents spawn apocalypse, and somehow Cleveland gets dragged into it. Dracula has lost his heart (literally), Ben has lost count of how many times he has died, and everyone keeps picking up "a few unlikely allies" like Pokémon cards. It is camp horror meets existential crisis, written with the energy of a B-movie on too much caffeine.

Here’s What Slapped:

That perfect mix of WTF and this actually works. Mr. Jameson’s writing knows exactly what it is, unapologetically ridiculous, self-aware, and weirdly sharp. The Athelas font joke had no business being that funny. Easter eggs galore for classic horror fans who like their nods with a wink and a bloodstain.

What Could’ve Been Better:
A few jokes overstay their welcome like zombies that refuse to stay buried. The plot occasionally forgets it is a plot and just vibes in chaos. You might need a flowchart to keep track of who is alive, undead, or undead-again.

Perfect for Readers Who Love:
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies but wish it had more body parts. Movies that start serious and end in glorious absurdity. The idea of Dracula sighing dramatically while wading through Pennsylvania mud.

This book brings together vampires, zombies, and even Dracula on a quest for his heart, alongside other well-known mythical creatures, and somehow takes you into outer space. It’s a bit of a wild ride. I had a slow start getting into the story, but once I did, it became entertaining.

That said, the plot sometimes feels more told than shown, and certain moments felt a bit forced. From the blurb, I expected more humor, but it didn’t quite deliver on that front. Overall, it’s a decent read and enjoyable once you settle into it, even if it wasn’t exactly what I anticipated.

As it turns out, this book was not exactly what I expected. It took a bit more time to get to the whole thing the title promises, but in the end it was still fun and engaging. The humour was a little too much at times.
