A talented runner, Davie Peters has been found, dead. His body on the Bad Step, in Cumbria.
Nick Potterton, a former London journalist, now in the Peak District, licking his wounds has the case. It should be easy to write up, and file, forgotten about, before moving on to the next story. A young life cut short, by a tragic accident.
It is not that simple. As Potterton digs deeper, he finds that there is more to the case, to the incident than initially meets the eye. With assistance from the police force, and particularly Jill Nicholson, a sub-editor on the Daily Telegraph, Potterton finds that there are reasons for the death of Davie Peters, and a loss of his footing was not the main cause of his death.
The denouement of the novel is somewhat unexpected. The book is short, at only 155 pages, the writing style is pacey, with plenty of forward momentum. However, the story and the plot are a bit basic, and linear, and only a few of the characters are explored in any depth or detail. The novel though is very good with details, and the areas around Cumbria are particularly well drawn and thought out.
