He has set out from his uncle's tower with a singular to rescue his father from the clutches of an ancient necromancer, who resides somewhere within the corpse of a skeletal colossus. After days of braving the desert, Isaac mistakenly launches a fireball at a pirate ship, and, in the ensuing chaos, soon finds himself at the mercy of the only surviving brigand, a towering hyena known as Zaria.
He assumes she will leave him for dead.
Instead, Zaria joins his mission by force, seeking the treasure at the bottom of the tomb. Very soon, the two are locked in an unsteady alliance, facing off against deadly traps, ancient machines, powerful sorcerers, pursuing pirates, and all manner of unfolding conspiracy. As the dangers continue to mount, and the possibilities for escape grow ever slim, both human and hyena discover they have more in common than either thought possible. What starts as rivalry soon becomes friendship, trust, and even love.
In the end, their only hope of survival will be each other.
Okay well, this one took me a long time. like two months. Not to say it was BAD, just...it's a chunker. (540+ pages) but I DO have quite a bit to say about this one.
So, I really like Human male x anthro female books. They're FAR less popular than when the genders are reversed and that's very irritating. So when i come across a book like this in the wild, i feel i need to give it a try.
This one is about a mage guy who is sent off to save his father from this sorceress lady in the desert. He comes across Zaria, a large anthro hyena woman and the two begrudgingly team up to fight their way through the sorceress's lair. That's an extremely oversimplified version, but that's the GENERAL idea.
So first things first, yes. There is sex in this book. I won't say that it's an EGREGIOUS amount, but if you are the kind of person who doesn't like that sort of thing, well, too bad, it's there. I believe there are THREE scenes of it in the book if i remember accurately. if they're not your thing they're easily skippable as they're in obvious chunks.
As for the story itself, yeah, it's too long. That's something i have to get out right away. 540 pages is WAY too long for this book. it took me like 2 months to get through this thing as it definitely got to points where it felt like a schlog now and then. i think the author could have easily shaved off about 100 pages. (for example, the epilogue was 40 pages all on its own which just goes to show you how lengthy things were).
The characters of Zaria and Isaac are very interesting. Isaac is a sheltered tower mage and Zaria is an illiterate, foul mouthed hyena pirate. They are literally polar opposites from each other, but, I have to say, their relationship doesn't feel forced or fake. Like, I actually believe these two fell in love with each other, so good on the author. The romance felt genuine, and, despite their differences both physical and mental, their attachment to each other is quite sweet.
However, i will say, this book gets INCREDIBLY violent at times. Like, there's violence and then there's just it being egregious. I definitely felt the author was trying to go pretty shockingly gross with the necromancy stuff and the deaths, and it absolutely felt a bit over the top at times.
One of the few things I was a bit sad about was the lack of actual world seeing. For nearly 90% of the book, Zaria and Isaac are in this evil dungeon they have to survive through. We don't get to see much about the actual world other than things we hear of in flashbacks. I would have liked to have seen more of this world outside of the evil necromancer cave.
So the question is, was it any good? Well, I have to say, certain parts i enjoyed, yes. I enjoyed Zaria. Isaac was kind of..eh? He was whiny, annoying, and was very "main character-ish". i can't say i was the biggest fan of Isaac. Yeah there were some times where he was okay, but he definitely had that vibe of "ah, i've been stabbed 75 times but i still have enough power to do a final attack" like he REEKED of main anime character at times.
I'll say this. If he released another book in this universe, i'd probably read it. It's an interesting enough world i'd like to see more. Perhaps a "being stuck in a necromancer cave" with family drama wasn't exactly my cup of tea. Either way, interesting premise, some interesting characters, but not the greatest execution and it needed to be shorter.
