Storm's Edge

Rate this book
Vanessa just wanted to keep a low profile in London’s shadow world. But when a courier job comes in that will save a girl’s life, she can’t say no.

Vanessa uses her supernatural strength to work as a courier between shifts as a barista. If it has to get there, and there might be trouble, she’ll come through.

But Vanessa’s past is a dangerous one. She’s only safe as long as everyone in her old life thinks she’s dead.

When she’s given a job to rescue Mia, a teenage girl trapped in a life that’s consuming her, she’s drawn into a high-stakes conflict with a Brotherhood of warlocks who will stop at nothing to get Mia back. Along with a vampire named Leo who possesses surprising talents, Vanessa must stay one step ahead of the Brotherhood, learn who to trust, and when all else fails, fight with everything she’s got.

But the darkness of Vanessa’s old life is still within her. Unleashing her old self might save them all – or destroy her forever.

Perfect for fans of the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews and Jim Butcher's Dresden Files.

Join Vanessa on this action-packed urban fantasy adventure across London today!

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

4.5*

I read the free prequel, that is not on GR, & rated that at 3.75 and quickly got this book.
Unlike the prequel, and the blurb would suggest, this book is actually told via following 5 (?) characters. Mostly we see the world with Vanessa just as in the prequel and book synopsis. I consider her to be the MC.

I liked the MC.
I liked the other characters.
I liked the world.
I enjoyed the plot.

I dislike that I didn't discover this series after it was complete, so I've got to wait to see what happens.

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

I liked it a bit more than expected. I had never read anything from this author so I go into those settings with Medium expectations. I liked the main character - Vanessa as well as the primary secondary, Leo. The mix of POV was a bit off-putting since there wasn't any notification at the start of the chapter or section change. I really disliked Freddie and his whole gang so I'm certain we haven't see the last of them. I wish there had been a bit more about Edric. He was way too mysterious and his goals were pretty nebulous. I wasn't quite certain if he was really a good guy for a bit. I was not that enamored with Mia, but that's probably just me. She was quite sad and I did feel sorry for her though. I look forward to learning more about Vanessa's background and what exactly is going on with Leo.

Another wonderful series and a brilliant start it is too. Can't wait to learn more about Leo and Vanessa. It's the start of a wonderful partnership and a story that's brilliant. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one.
So Vanessa has abilities and so does Leo, two unusual people who come together and learn to do good, within a magical world. They are contracted to save Mia, a young woman who is iffy as to whether or not she wants saving, until her life is on the line and even then sometimes. Fortunately there are two people who can save her anyway. Gripping stuff. Would love to see this a TV series!

It’s become increasingly difficult to find a book that is hard to put down. I’ve been disappointed by a lot and it was great to find one that kept me on the hook. I really like how the author balanced Vanessa. I’m curious to see where the story goes and if she’ll get her power back. I also like how, despite how she is trying to be better, she can still be ruthless and doesn’t act dumb. Some authors don’t balance the redemption arc vs practicality as well as was done here.

Excellent

Vanessa is a take charge, morally gray heroine. I really liked her. Leo is also engaging and, his abilities and what they mean are somewhat of a mystery. This was truly an action/adventure storyline and I cannot wait to read the next installment. If you like danger, action, adventure than these stories are for you!

A Good Start

This was a good fun read. Interesting characters, interesting plot and a likeable MC. They are smart, resourceful, and most importantly not perfect. They feel real. I will be continuing the series to see whats next in store.

This was surprisingly good.
Okay why such a surprise I hear you ask?
I think I’m a little jaded. So many books promise so much. But if I’m being honest they usually disappoint. This one didn’t. I liked both the main characters and cant wait for more….

Liked it

I quite liked this book. It the first time I've read this author. It hooked me from the beginning. Now I am off to read the rest of the series and probably his other set in the same world.

There is a lot.going on in this one--never dull, some self-deprecatimg snark, and some.rebuldimg.of self after some world shattering (possibly literal) events for some of the characters. Hoping the whole Scooby gang returns.

Not your cookie cutter supernatural book

Storms Edge brings a new look into vampires, necromancers and heroines. Very Refreshing. The heroine had a unique back story which makes you want to read more. I could not put it down.

Heroine for the win.

I guess my favorite books include heroines. Some are mystery, some detectives, but most are fantasy. The author spins a good story, good enough to have you reaching for the next book. So start reading already.

Goodbye, Book Slump!

Stumbled on this author and this book kept me turning pages until my eyes burned. Enjoyed the cast of characters, the world-building and author's writing style. I intend to gobble up whatever books of his I can get my hands on.

As a DNF Queen, I'm thankful for the win. 🤎
