Rate this book
Welcome to Thailand: there’s no room for error, and the stakes are high.

As an FBI Agent stationed in Bangkok, John Schachnovsky must build trust, goodwill, and long-term relationships with his Thai counterparts. Beyond the Badge explores how those relationships lead to the capture of dangerous criminals, transcending borders.

From high-profile incidents like the shocking death of David Carradine to handling overseas terrorism, from the extradition of a suspect in the murder of a United States Marine to apprehending a notorious kidnapper with an Interpol Red Notice, experience true international crime investigations as never before: behind the scenes and firsthand.

Follow former Special Agent Schachnovsky as he takes on Irish mobsters, parental kidnappers, child abusers, cyber criminals, and murderers. More than a collection of riveting tales of intrigue, Beyond the Badge is a window into FBI foreign partnerships—a critical reminder of the importance of international cooperation in the fight against crime.

Law enforcement memoirs aren’t usually my go-to genre, but this book kept me hooked from start to finish. The author writes with the ease and warmth of someone telling great stories at a social gathering — making the FBI’s work both accessible and engaging.

It’s a fascinating look at collaboration across borders and a genuine tribute to the respect and partnership between U.S. and Thai law enforcement. John Schachnovsky’s behind-the-scenes access to top officials also offers a rare view into the inner workings of law enforcement and government. The mix of stories, from counter-terrorism to extradition cases, keeps the reader committed. And, with just enough detail, the FBI’s work becomes understandable and compelling without bogging the reader down in bureaucracy.

What really stands out is the author’s deep respect and affection for Thailand — both the people he works alongside and the communities he serves. His appreciation for the culture and the country he now calls home shines through in every chapter.

I would have loved more background on some of the author’s big life turns just for curiosity’s sake. For example, how one conversation with a police officer at a party turned into an FBI career, but that’s a small quibble in an otherwise compelling, well-paced read.

Informative, engaging, and full of heart, this is a read that humanizes the FBI — and the people who serve within it.

Great read. Great insights into law enforcement

I really enjoyed this book.
Not sure what to expect but it was fascinating to get some inside information into the functions of international law enforcement and specifically the FBI in Thailand.
After living in Thailand for several years this bought back lots of memories on how things work.
I also now have a new appreciation for the nuanced world of international law enforcement.
Well done John on a well written and engaging read.
