Spies Infiltrate Havensbooke Hall. . .and Another Mystery Adventure Begins

Stephen Blake's life goal is to protect people, especially those closest to him, but war in 1915 England doesn’t follow any rules. When Blake is informed that a noted German spy may have taken up residence at Havensbrooke Hall—his cousin Lord Astley’s estate, which is being used as a convalescent war hospital—he’s sent there to uncover the plot.

Lady Grace Astley has become a force to be reckoned with while Frederick is out on the war front. With Havensbrooke as a hospital, she’s shocked by the devastation the war is bringing home; but ever hopeful, she is determined to help these weary soldiers find some relief. However, not everything is as it seems inside Havensbrooke. Precious items soon start disappearing. . .and not just the kind that are worth a lot of money.

Through a case of mistaken identity, a comedy of errors, a kidnapping, and a race for time within the crumbling subterranean passageways beneath Havensbrooke, can Blake and Gracie work together to root out the criminals, thieves, and spies before time runs out?

It is always fun to spend time with Grace and Freddie on their adventures, solving crimes and battling bad guys. This story is different in that Freddie is off helping the war effort with the Royal Engineers. Grace is doing her part by hosting a convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers at Havensbrooke and being Mama to Zahra and Lily. When Freddie's cousin, Stephen Blake, shows up wounded, Grace is happy to see him. But there are all kinds of mysteries going on, including Blake's odd behavior, a new maid he seems to know, objects going missing, strange conversations between soldiers. We know that Grace loves a mystery. And Grace has a surprise for Freddie coming in the new year, a few months away. I do like Grace's sweet and fun personality and Freddie's love for her. I enjoyed Blake's story too. Great read!

I loved this story! The author really captured, in this story, the feelings that were evoked when I originally read The Mistletoe Countess. The connection and love between Frederick and Grace continues to be one of my favorites and this didn’t dissappoint.

She also added a thrilling romance for Stephen Blake, who is a British spy, Lord Astley’s cousin, and a favorite of both Frederick and Grace. I loved seeing the way he balanced his care for Grace with the need to complete his mission and capture those working for the enemy.

This story kept me happily turning pages from start to finish and I loved the way the author wrapped everything up at the end.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Another outstanding addition to this series!

I continue to appreciate the wonderful, realistic faith element. It is woven naturally into the story and never feels forced.

One of my favorite moments was when Frederick hugged Brandon, the butler, showing him that he is valued and loved. It was a simple but powerful reminder that everyone has worth.

I also feel this historical series has a bit more depth than the author’s contemporary books. That said, I consider both series to be solid five-star reads.

The action scenes were easy to picture, especially the fight sequences, which made them exciting without being confusing.

Zahra, Grace and Frederick’s adopted daughter, continues to be one of my favorite characters. She has been a wonderful addition to the series. She is sweet, precocious, and reminds me so much of her mother, Grace.

It was also fun to see Blake, Frederick’s cousin, and Evie, both fellow spies, each find a beautiful romantic interest. Their stories added warmth and hope amid the suspense.

NetGalley ARC. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased. Looking forward to the next in this series and more by this author.

What a delightful end to a series I thoroughly enjoyed! Pepper Basham, already an auto-read author for me, continues to get better and better. Not often can an author pull off a five-book series about the same couple, but she does!

Grace and Frederick are two of my favorite fictional characters. I love how they draw out the best in each other, and I also love that each book features internal and external conflict for them to work through (how like marriage!). This is no less true than in this finale, where Frederick spends the first half of the book embroiled in WWI and apart from his wife.

Back at home, Grace is not bored as Havensbrooke has transformed into a convalescent hospital for wounded and recovering soldiers ... and spies. I loved the pace of the plot, as we're thrown into the action immediately with Blake aboard the Lusitania. The glimpse into his perspective was really neat. I also enjoyed getting to know his love interest, Evie!

I was a smidge nervous going into the ending thinking that it wouldn't wrap up all the previous books in a satisfying manner or would feel sadly rushed. But the epilogue is all I could hope for, with a big surprise and a happy conclusion for all our favorite characters and then some. All around, this is a series I can't wait to reread!

Debonair spy, Stephen Blake is shocked by betrayal just as the Lusitania is torpedoed. Freddie’s on the war front and Gracie is doing her part for the war effort by devoting Havensbrooke as a hospital where she stumbles upon the news that spies abound. Pepper Basham is an author I have longed to try when I discovered her gift for characters bantering, getting up to entertaining situations, and falling into swoony love both in historical and contemporary settings.

This was a great conclusion to the series! I do recommend reading these books in order. I loved this story! It was nice to see Stephen Blake more in this story and him being more central to the storyline. Of course we also get to see Grace and Freddie again even though Freddie doesn’t appear until halfway through. As usual, I loved Grace. She is such a fun character. I loved seeing more of the family dynamic with Freddie and Grace and their kids. Stephen has his own bit of romance which is fun. I loved him and Evie together. I loved the whole spy part of the story. There was good Christian content. Overall, a great story and I recommend!

This intriguing series continues with the latest installment, The Bachelor Spy. Spies and secrets abound, and they keep the reader guessing. The characters all seem quite realistic, and their actions appear authentic. The fast-paced plot gets increasingly more involved, and the tension ramps up. The seriousness of the situation explored affects not only the story’s characters themselves, but the war effort of the Allies during World War I. Danger and drama abound in this compelling story. Even if you haven’t read the earlier books so you know the recurring characters (you will want to read them all!), this novel offers a complete tale that provides a satisfying reading experience. It made me think of when Downton Abbey was turned into a military hospital during the war. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own. #TheBachelorSpy #NetGalley

While not what I would call a riveting mystery, this story still proved to be entertaining. I’m not a big fan of mysteries because it’s so typical for the answer to be glaringly obvious, and yet the characters blunder around for 75% of the story before getting anywhere close to solving it. I wouldn’t say this book was so out of the norm as to not have the mystery easily guessed, but it also wasn’t so boring that I couldn’t stand to read it. So do with that what you will 😂

I loved the strong Christian tones in this story! Any book that will help me in my Christian life is a win for me ☺️ The characters did very well at learning to rely on the Lord in the midst of hardships rather than trying to rely on their own strength—a wonderful reminder for my own life.

Though not the main theme in this story, the romance was very sweet and touching ❤️ I haven’t read the first four books in this series so I haven’t been along for the growth of Freddie and Grace’s relationship, but I loved the little peek this story gave me into their beautiful marriage. Their pure devotion for each other was incredibly sweet and refreshing to read about. I love that we also got to experience Blake’s budding romance with his love ☺️

I must say, the fight scenes were incredibly well written! It’s been quite a while since I’ve read fights that actually felt realistic. I could easily picture what was happening in my mind’s eye, which made it all the more exciting. I also appreciated that the characters weren’t able to dodge every single bullet shot at them 😄

I’d rate the readability of this book fairly high since I didn’t have any difficulties reading it when I’d pick it up. The writing flowed very well, and I never found myself taken out of the story because of it. All in all, I’d say this was a pretty solid book 👌🏻

Just when Grace and Freddie finally settle, war breaks out sending Freddie away, and their house becomes a hospital with Grace facing the adjustments. Not surprisingly, spies and mysteries enter Grace’s home, and she’s delighted to have a puzzle to solve.

Life happens that way. All is going fine, then boom, a problem surfaces. Grace has a built-in mechanism that turns a problem into a mystery to solve. We all need a measure of her faith under pressure, sprinkled with mercy and understanding.

Our lives might not be filled with espionage, fighting, and wounds, but we do have battles and scars needing healing. Bravo, Pepper

A new adventure set in 1915, England, with plenty of action, mystery and romance! Featuring Freddie's cousin, Stephen Blake, whose role in military intelligence brings him back to Havensbrooke, which has been turned into a convalescent hospital for soldiers. Grace has her hands full with the hospital in her home, and Freddie away at war. Mysteries abound and the game is afoot!

Grace has plenty to keep her busy, with multiple mysteries to solve, including a personal one. Her positive, quirky outlook on life keeps things lighter even as she faces difficulties. She has new fears to face with courage and growing faith, adding moments of inspiration to reflect and add hope.

The spy aspect of the story added more action and danger, with some suspense. Plenty of romantic banter and tension kept it light and the pace moving along quickly. It had the feel of a favorite old movie in parts, with a little bit of Downton Abbey added.

A fun read throughout with a sigh worthy ending. Recommend reading the series in order to fully understand the backstory. Hope there are more in the series! 4.5 stars

Another Freddie & Grace Mystery!!!!!!!! I absolutely LOVE this series! I discovered it not too long after I discovered Pepper Basham's books. I saw the first book in the series when I searched the author's name on my library digital services site. And I thought it sounded sweet and fun! It was way beyond what I imagined it would have been and I was completely hooked and so excited for more and more books! Definitely a favorite series that I recommend to friends and fellow readers! If you want delightful characters, exciting adventures, history fun, and so much more, read the whole series! I'm so sad this is the last book and I really hope that these characters will have some cameos in other books by this author!!! *Fingers Crossed*

Stephen Blake is our main hero in this book. He's caught in a crazy scheme and framed for treason, left for dead, and not going to give up figure out who the real traitor is! Oh my word! Fast paced and kept my attention. Then his searching leads him to his cousin's estate, Havensbrooke Hall. Grace is left alone to manage the home and help the soldiers who are there to convalesce after being injured in the war. Something doesn't seem right and it definitely becomes even more apparent to Grace when Blake shows up!

Missing items, and little patterns that all start adding up to confirm that something or someone is under foot and causing mischief. Can Grace, Blake, Zahra, Evie and several other secondary characters figure it all out, catch the bad guy, and save the day in time? I loved watching these characters work together and uncover some important information. Secrets and mysteries abound in this amazing last installment of the Freddie & Grace Mystery series!!! Read them! And please read them in order! They are best enjoyed that way! I'm so glad that I can return to these books and enjoy them all over again and again. Read them or listen to the audiobooks! They're all wonderful!

Content: Clean!!! Some moments of peril. Christian fiction.

THE BACHELOR SPY is another adventure and banter-filled story in this series. Likable characters, a bit of suspense and mystery, danger that climaxes towards the end, romance, and some faith-inspired moments make this an enjoyable read. Recommended to fans of the genre and this series.

I have read the first three books of this series so I was familiar with the characters, and this fifth book was my favorite of the series. I was particularly excited to get more of Blake, Freddie's dashing spy cousin, and he did not disappoint. This story starts off magnificently with literally quite a bang. It made me excited to keep reading and dive into this world again.

Grace and Freddie were very loving on a whole other level, which can be a bit much for me at times. Blake's and Evie's romance was a bit more on par for my taste. Plus I couldn't help smiling or out right laughing at Blake's quips. There was plenty of chemistry, some red herrings with the mystery, plenty of spy business and danger, and an interesting plot. The romance was sweet with good chemistry and dialogue. I also love the relationship between Blake, Grace and Freddie, as well as the relationship between Grace, Freddie and Brandon. I liked that the mystery and suspense had a few twists and turns. All the characters had moments of prayer and faith, but nothing pushy. That was woven through the story well.

In the end, was it what I wished for? There was plenty of chemistry, some red herrings with the mystery, plenty of spy business and danger, and an interesting plot. This was a thoroughly enjoyable story!

"You're absolutely perfect, light of my life."

The Bachelor Spy by Pepper Basham

Spies. Lost Treasure. Sweet swoony romance. Suspense. Our favorite fictional sleuthing heroine along with a bachelor spy.
Grace and Freddie return in this the final installment in the Freddie and Grace mysteries. This time we get another POV--Stephen Blake's. He's charming, witty, a spy, and a bit mysterious, and I was so here for it all. I loved getting his POV. It was so fun to be in his head and watch him fall face first for the enigmatic Evie Montgomery. Those two make quite the pair! I loved the banter, the closet scene, and them working together. They are fire together!

The continual tender romance between Grace and Freddie and the love they share for their adoptive family is beautiful. I loved the way they accepted Brandon the butler and Evie into their family. And one of my favorite parts is the epilogue! So sweet and tender and I related so much to Grace.

Pepper wrote another winner and I have to say, this one is my absolute favorite of hers as well as my favorite Freddie and Grace book and a top read for me this year! Highly recommend! But be sure to read books 1-4 first, as this book contains spoilers for those ones as well as a more complete character arc.

I love Pepper Basham's books, but I was hesitant to read this one. I loved the first book in the series. However, the others haven't interested me as much. I think I have finally figured out why.

While all the books in the series are historical fiction, the first book is set around Christmas, and it feels more like a contemporary read. All the other books have Grace and Freddie solving mysteries in exotic places (but the mysteries themselves haven't interested me). This is obviously a me problem, and not a story problem.

Now, this story. Grace is at home, and Frederick is away as part of the war effort. This right here is problem number one for me. Grace and Freddie shine together, but apart, Grace gets in her head too much...and several parts of the story felt redundant.

Second, Grace is intelligent, although naive. However, she doesn't realize or research something that is obvious to the reader, and as an intelligent woman in every other story, this plot point fell flat, and completely unbelievable.

Overall, I am glad that I finished the series, but this was my least favorite of the series. While I didn't love it, I do recommend it and the entire series. My problems are not ones that most readers will have.

The Bachelor Spy by Pepper Basham continues the mystery intrigue of dynamic duo Freddie and Grace. I love how the stories have the familiar characters as they progress through early marriage, and if readers are familiar with the previous stories, two little girls. I enjoy the setting and relationship between Freddie and Grace. Again Grace finds herself enthralled in a mystery, this time at home. The mystery was a little slow in the middle, but it picked up toward the end, and the climactic moment was wonderful. I love how fast Pepper writes the conflict, so the readers can feel the urgency right along with the characters. As for the setting, it was nice to see their home, and how important it is to Freddie, and how important it has become to Grace. Overall, The Bachelor Spy by Pepper Basham is a nice way to end the series. Maybe some day in the future she might come back to the secondary characters: her daughters and write their stories. That would be story to return to.

The author's foray into the period of World War I with the setting that of a wealthy Lord and Lady Astley's estate, Havensbrook, as a hospital for the wounded and war damaged young men of England, is interesting. Delightful characters include the staunch, loyal butler Brandon, the lovely Lady Grace (who features in other Freddie & Grace Mysteries), the charming child star of the story and sweet adopted daughter, Sahra, all blended with duplicitous spies Germany (the enemy) as well as spies for England all set the stage for an interesting story.

There were sections that I felt as through I was plodding through a wordy mire and a tangle of characters that confused and stilled my interest. But the story read on and I found much that was interesting.

I found couples in a delightful romantic adventure with each other and engaged in some rapturous embraces and kisses. A bit more intense than usual for a Christian novel. Albeit, rapturous, it was still a very clean read and safe for your older teen or perhaps grandmother.

We all know that the German army was defeated; so hence we know, too, that the outcome of The Bachelor Spy was good as well.

As someone who was really enjoyed reading the Freddie and Grace Mystery series I will say that this fifth and final book was indeed a real treasure! Our favorite couple which started out as a marriage of convenience has grown into something larger with each passing book. Not only have they managed to have great adventures with each book but they have made many friends and have grown their family along the way. I think that this final installment was the best way to end things because it really shows how far they have come in these five books!

In 1915 WWI is here and Grace is in charge of the estate while Freddie is away on the front. She has made use of her time by caring for the wounded soilders. Enter Freddie's cousin Stephen who has been informed that german spues may be lurking around the area. Shortly after that random items start to go missing. Rather than sit back and panic Grace decides to take matters into her own hands and get to the bottom of things.

The Bachelor Spy is my favorite book in the Freddie & Grace Mysteries series!

Pepper Basham delivers an exciting blend of mystery, suspense, humor, and sweet romance that kept me eagerly turning the pages. Between secret passageways, spies, kidnappings, mistaken identities, and plenty of unexpected twists, there was never a dull moment.

One of the things I loved most was spending time with these beloved characters again. Stephen Blake and Lady Grace have fantastic chemistry, and watching them work together to solve the mystery made this story especially enjoyable. The returning cast added warmth and familiarity, while the suspense kept me guessing until the very end.

The ending was both exciting and deeply satisfying, making this a wonderful conclusion to the series. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy Christian historical fiction, World War I settings, engaging mysteries, and wholesome romance.

Right out of the gate, this book is FIRE!!! The action starts and keeps on going. The author has definitely found her pacing and makes the story flow along quickly and easily.

OK...

Where was Freddie? Spoiler alert...

Missing for the first half of the book. Blink blink.

Did that make me nervous. YES!

Did the author greedily divert my attention towards Stephen and his ahem, escapades... Also, YES!

So much fun. And as Grace herself stated, "Why enjoy only one mystery when she could have two. How absolutely delightful."

Are you sure Pepper? Is this the last book in the series? You're on a roll now and the books are just getting better and better. The swoony romance perfectly balanced with so much inclusion of God makes my heart doubly happy. More, please!

4.25 brilliant stars!!!
Pepper Basham has truly done it again! This is the 5th book in the “A Freddie & Grace Mystery” series, set in 1915 England.
The mystery, the pacing, the characters… it was positively gripping to say the least. Every page painted such vivid imagery and was bursting with richly integrated faith. God was so present throughout the entire book, and each character helped lead one another to the Lord. The writing held such wit and intrigue, while also holding such heartfelt, masterfully crafted love.
My only qualm is that I didn’t know of this series sooner!!! While you don’t need to read every book to understand the story, I do wish I had read the rest of them (which I plan to resolve ASAP!) to have known the characters and their stories a little better.
If you enjoy high-stakes, espionage, banter, historical settings, Christian themes, and CLEAN romance… I highly, strongly, and positively recommend! Honestly, any book from this author, I 1000% recommend :)
I am still grinning and a little teary from the final chapters and epilogue!
Happy reading :)

This book in the series was different, mainly because Grace was alone at home while Freddie was fighting in the war, but we still experience the same fun, adventure and banter we had a privilege to during the series, but with a twist of the spy world and the focus on Blake, who I came to love during the series.

Blake met his match, romantically and in the field in Evie. And I enjoyed their interactions and development of their relationship, especially how Blake tried to find a nickname for Evie. Their search for the traitor and information made an interesting, suspenseful read.

Grace still found herself in the middle of the adventure, even though Freddie was not next to her, but luckily made an appearance in time to come to her rescue again.

This was an adventurous read and I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the life of Grace and Freddie and was sad to have to say goodbye to these book friends.

Sometimes you come across a very special character in a memorable story in what becomes a much beloved series. This new book, The Bachelor Spy, brings all of the charm, humor, and adventure that I’ve come to expect!

Grace is just the sweetest character. I love reading about her and her darling Frederick and all of the curious situations that find them. In this one, Stephen Blake, Frederick’s cousin, steps forward and you can almost hear the soundtrack of a spy movie from the start.

It was so sweet to see Blake solve one particular mystery that eluded Grace. Yet it is this very section that highlights why Grace and this series is so special — there’s this dash of innocence about her and a sincerity about her Faith along with a clever mind and resilience.

I adore how Faith themes are interwoven throughout this novel. There are so many standout sentences, because they say what we carry in our hearts — holding on to Faith in Him in the most difficult of times.

There’s this moment which refers to a time when a certain character prayed for another, and it moved me. Honestly, I think a man praying for that special someone is one of the most beautiful moments. Swoon-worthy, yes, but the meaning and what it says about him… so very precious.

That said, as always, I personally find it jarring whenever religious words are used as, for instance, an exclamation. There are some infrequent uses of “Good ****” and “Good ***”.

Overall, the story is amazing! I’ve been looking forward to this book since it was announced, and it did not disappoint. I would like to add that Zahra is still brilliant, and I hope that one day there will be a spin-off series with her as the main character. So, simply put, this is a very special series that sweeps you along with its love, humor, adventure, and most of all, Faith and grace (what we receive, not the name, although it fits her so well).

This story has it all and was SO GOOD! I could not put it down!

This book had a lot going on and the author handled all of the threads, storylines & espionage chaos in an absolutely masterful way that kept me up way past my bedtime wanting to see how it all turned out! I laughed and I cried and oh my goodness, that ending 🥹😍.

These characters have a way of burrowing right into your heart and I haven’t even read books 2-4 in this series yet! (Yes, you can read it out of order but you will get spoilers….I didn’t mind and reading this has made me all the more excited to read the other books 😍)

The banter, wit, sarcasm & Grace being Grace make this story so much fun! I don’t want to give too much away, but I absolutely adore Blake and Mr Brandon 🥹. Grace has found herself a family that is quirky and loving and everything she could have ever hoped for.

And I absolutely loved the faith aspects woven through out of trusting God, finding our worth in Him and knowing that His plans are for our good & His glory. 🩵

This was absolutely a solid 5 ⭐️ read and I cannot wait to read the other books in the series that I haven’t read yet. I know I’m going to love these characters all the more!

Thank you to Barbour Books for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own and have not been influenced in any way!

Fun and enjoyable regency with spy action, hidden identity, a romance subplot and much more.

As part of a continuing series, A Freddie and Grace Mystery #5, this story picks up with Stephen Blake who hears that a German spy may be residing at his cousin Lord Astley's estate which has been temporarily turned into a convalescence home/hospital. With the help of his fierce and tenacious cousin in law, Lady Grace. As Blake and Grace try to weed out the spy as well as thief in the house, they encounter more than they bargained for.
This is the first book in this series that I've personally read so while I feel like I'm missing part of the back story just jumping in, I did still enjoy this book and these characters. I'd recommend starting at the beginning of the series though.
There is banter, a little bit of no spice romance, danger and a bit of mystery.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Author for giving me access to the arc in exchange for my honest review.

This novel was an absolute delight to read. Basham is a master at creating amazing characters who dialogue with subtle whit and gentle sarcasm. The repartee is so fun to follow. Basham creates seriously nefarious characters too. That leads to some exciting fight scenes, even a few among women. The descriptions are as good as any thrillers I've read. And the romance! There are some romantic scenes, totally clean and pure but with such depth of emotion they nearly took my breath away. There is also some good humor. I really liked that Grace is such a reader of mysteries. That allowed Basham to create some great tongue in cheek humor. There is a subtle but well presented faith message too.

I am not generally not a fan of historical fiction but I have loved this series. I highly recommend it.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent review.

Freddie and Grace have been my favourite literary couple for a few years now. I fell in love with them in 'The Mistletoe Countess' and have continued to enjoy their . . . misadventures ever since.
I loved that we got 2 mysteries in this book, and that in Freddie's absence at the Front (dratted WWI!), his cousin and best friend, Stephen Blake was able to step in and not only do his own work as the eponymous bachelor spy, but to be on hand to help Grace and her household.
There were some real twists and turns in this one, some that I had my suspicions proved correct about, and some that I did not really see coming until the detective/spy work had deduced them for me.
And, as always, the faith element was strong and a lovely reminder that even when circumstances are unwanted, God is always, ALWAYS good and gives us abounding grace!
While I am sad that this is the last book in the series, I think it was a most excellent note on which to end.

Oh my heart! What a fantastic ending to a phenomenal series! Pepper Basham outdid herself by not only giving us Blake’s intriguing story, but also a perfect ending for Freddie and Grace.

Blake’s character has intrigued me from his first appearance in the series, and I was thrilled to get to know his real story. It was so much better than I imagined.

Freddie and Grace have taken us on many wonderful adventures and this book was no different. While it started out different due to them separated by Freddie’s service in the war, I felt it completely captured the depth of their love for each other.

This book will capture you with its suspense, danger, humor, and romance. It left me with a smile on my face long after the last page was turned.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
