در دوران حدوداً یک‌سالهٔ ترور، هزاران شهروند فرانسوی زندانی و صدها نفر با گیوتین اعدام شدند. برای اولین بار در تاریخ، در انقلاب فرانسه بود که دولتی دموکراتیک از ترور به دلایل سیاسی و به نام مردم استفاده کرد. اما چه باعث شد انقلابی که با شعار «آزادی، برابری، برادری» و با نوید تساهل و عدالت و حقوق بشر از دل اندیشهٔ روشنگری برآمده بود چنین دولتی را پدید آورد؟ آیا دوران ترور، همان‌طور که اغلب و به شکلی ساده‌انگارانه تصویر می‌شود، چیزی جز وحشت و قتل‌عام نبود؟ پیچیدگی‌های این دورهٔ جنجالی و چگونگی تحلیل آن در نحوهٔ نگرش مورخان به کلیت انقلاب نقش کلیدی دارد.
این کتاب با هدف ارائۀ تحلیلی متوازن و حتی‌الامکان منصفانه از تعریف واژهٔ ترور و رویکردهای اصلی‌ای که به این دوران وجود دارد شروع می‌کند و بعد ترور را از پس‌زمینه‌هایش ــ از زمان وقوع انقلاب کبیر با یورش به دژ باستی در ۱۷۸۹ ــ تا سقوط رُبِسپیِر و آغاز تِرمیدُر در ۱۷۹۴ مرور می‌کند و زمینه‌های سیاسی و فرهنگی و اجتماعی و اقتصادی آن را می‌کاود.

Good god man. What a freaking insane time period. I've always been FAR more fascinated with the French Revolution than the American one. It was just madness.

Note: only read this is you have familiarity and background knowledge of the French Revolution, it is written to assume that you do.

This is an excellent monograph, though being in the 'Studies in European History' series it does presuppose some previous knowledge of the Revolution and its main events and personalities. But if you do have that background knowledge I thought it was a perfect example of a clearly written, well-argued account of the Terror, its origins, course and decline , including quite a lot of interesting detail about the events and development of it, and in particular the debates of historians of different persuasions around it. There is also a detailed bibliography.
If, like me, you find this a fascinating period of history, you will, I think. gain a great deal from this little book.

A good solid history book specifically on the time of the Great Terror. It does not go to the time of Napoleon, but it has a very useful chronology at the end.

Interesting but very dry account of the Terror during the French Revolution. Assumes previous knowledge of the French Revolution.
