Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.
Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.
She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.
Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.
She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.
She adores hearing from readers, so don’t hesitate to say hello or sign up for her newsletter: http://tesswrites.com/. You’ll receive an ebook copy of her novella, The Santa Trial, for your efforts.
I have been reading stuff that hasn’t really hit I feel like lately. That makes me question myself is it me? Am I in a reading slump? But then I find a book that keeps me engaged and I must acknowledge it was not me.
This is a clean romance but it was so good. I loved that the bad people were not over the top or didn’t seem comical. It was scary what could happen to the characters of this story ( but I knew we’d get out HEA.) I also liked that the characters didn’t constantly try to talk themselves out of a potential relationship with one another. They were trying to find ways to make it work.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I am very excited to read more.
A wonderful story a time when women had no rights, you had to do what the man said.
Some men thought they lived above the law. Anything they did was right and no one could stop them. Criminals always doing harm to others. Always out for their self.
Sebastian ashford, Once was a duke's son, this story unfolds so well i didn't want to stop reading.I completed this story in two short days.
Rose 🌹 wentworth. is another favorite part of this story for me.
This phenomenal story is about love, deception, murder, all wrapped up into one.But the way it's written is absolutely wonderful.I loved everything about this story.
I do hope there's more books in the series. If it is to be a series.
There is so much good to recommend about this book, I hardly know where to start. This is a historical novel by Tess Thompson, and one thing I have enjoyed about her historical novels is that no matter what era Tess sets her novels in, they are always full of the atmosphere of their times. This is the story of a man's search to right the wrongs done to his family, and a woman about to be wronged by the same man. Secret identities, revenge, mystery, and romance abound in this well plotted novel. The hero's struggle between his desire for revenge and the pain that would cause to his new love is the central tension in the story, but there is also the suspense of his secret identity, the risks he is taking, and the heroine's looming fate. I thought that the characters were well developed and felt like real people. Even the secondary characters were interesting, and left me wanting to know more about their stories. I recommend this novel and look forward to reading the rest of this series. I received a copy of this novel as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest, and voluntary review.
What a wonderful story. I love historical romances and I have a feeling that the new The Duke’s Legacy series by author Tess Thompson is going to be one of my favorites. Actually, everything Thompson does is a favorite. You don’t want to miss this one.
When He Was a Duke introduces Sebastian Ashford and his siblings James and Sophia. Their lives were warm, cozy, privileged and idyllic living in Ashford Manor, children of loving parents. After their mother died things weren’t quite as perfect, but their father Edward, Duke of Ashford, valued his children above all else and made it clear to them every day. And then something far too horrible to even imagine happened: Lord Ashford was accused of the murder of Lady Eleanor Wentworth. The murder weapon, a candlestick, was found on the Ashford Estate. Edward and Eleanor were friends but nothing more, and he had no reason to kill her. Viscount Wentworth was an influential, powerful man and his forceful certainty led to Edward’s arrest and hanging witnessed by his children. What happened to the Ashford children? Now orphans. Sent to a distant relative who was cruel and abusive. Everything was taken away – home, money, title, that privileged life. They struggled but survived, and twelve years later finds them living modest lives with modest expectations.
But Sebastian has never wavered in his determination to make things right, to clear his father’s name, to regain what they have lost. His life until now has been on hold with his only goal that of revenge. He gets his opportunity when he learns of an opening for a gardener at Wentworth Manor. At last, he’ll be able to observe and listen and if things work out just right to find evidence of wrongdoing, of his father being framed. Viscount Wentworth has a reputation as an imperious, cruel man not to be crossed. Going up against him will be risky and Sebastian will need proof. If things work out as he hopes he’ll soon find solid evidence and ruin Wentworth and his family, just like his family was ruined. He'll be able to provide for his brother and sister and see justice service. If . . . .
The great thing about Regency romances is that while they are colorful and grand and elaborate, putting a smile on your face at the sheer pomp and beauty of it all, they also cause you to grind your teeth because the Regency Era was chock full of rules and injustice, social mores that must not be violated, strict class distinction, corruption and the common practice of civil authorities like constables being bought and paid for by the titled. And the most infuriating thing: women were only valued for the money and prestige they brought to a relationship, looks were important but money and power trumped everything. And most women had no say, no input, no control. A father, brother, uncle, almost any male could decide where they lived, who they married, where they were allowed to go and what they were allowed to do.
One of those powerless women is Lady Rose Wentworth. Just 8 years old when her mother was murdered, raised by a cruel, demanding father who is obvious in his disdain and now promised to a business partner of her father’s. Threatened by her father if she does not comply, it’s a terrifying, disgusting future she sees ahead of her.
Sebastian the Gardener and Rose the Poor Daughter meet in the rose garden and there is instant attraction. But Sebastian is there under false pretenses; he’s trying to destroy the Wentworth family. But it gets harder and harder to accept the idea of destroying Rose. These feelings are new to Rose, but she’s much stronger and more resourceful than she realizes. Remember, thought, this is still the Regency and what a titled man says goes, what a father says goes – so how can there be any hope for a future?
This is where author Thompson shines. She takes dark, dangerous, heartbreaking situations and makes you feel hope, feel the warmth and possibility of love. After bringing you to tears a few times, of course. When He Was a Duke is a delightful start to this series. It is exciting, sweet, suspenseful, with strong characters both good and evil, the importance of family and friends, and a plot that moves along at the perfect pace. And an ending that will make you swoon. I received an advance copy of When He Was a Duke as part of the author’s Tessers Review Crewsters ARC team. I loved it and recommend it and everything Thompson writes without hesitation. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
We have Lady Rose Wentworth who has been sheltered but knows something is not right in her home due to nightmares since her mother’s violent death! We also have Lord Sebastian Ashford who watched his father be framed for a murder he did not commit! I struggled with some details because as a Duke a ganging seemed most unlikely! Peers literally got away with murder even if they had to be shipped overseas or flee to the Colonies! Nonetheless Sebastian waits twelve long years with his siblings surviving unimaginable horrors! When an opportunity comes for him to work as a gardener at Wentworth Manor he seizes it! Sebastian is very good with plants especially roses! He encounters secret meetings whispers in the dark as he slowly but surely uncovers secrets and gathers allies! He is immediately drawn to Rose and she to him but she thinks he’s just a Gardner and her father has other nefarious plans for her! As they are drawing closer and the evidence and witnesses grow so does Sebastian’s love for Rose! Can he choose between revenge and clearing his father’s name or love? Will the choice be made for him! This is a page turner with action and suspense! If you are looking for a heat level this one does not have it! But it will keep up turning the pages! Bravo well done! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!
As always a wonderful romance that has all the elements to keep you engaged. Sebastian has waited 12 years to right a wrong done to his family. His father a Duke was wrongfully accused of murder. Hung and his children were stripped from everything they ever knew. Now he has a chance to prove that his father was innocent and the murderer was the woman’s own husband. Undercover as a gardener, a trade he was forced to learn in order to survive, he gets the position but now how to get the evidence? Lady Rose is in a dire situation, her father never had much love for her and now he is arranging her marriage to a horrible man her father’s age. Feeling hopeless she seeks comfort from her deceased mother’s rose garden. There she meets Sebastian the new gardener, but he isn’t like the average worker. Seems to be a step above, but something about him attracts her. How can the daughter of his enemy be calling to his soul? Can he forget his revenge for love? This story is well written, has good and evil, revenge and triumphant and a HEA all written as a clean romance. Can’t wait to read the next book. Thank you #NetGalley and #DragonbladePublishing for the ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
This was a charming and emotional Regency romance that was easy to read and hard to put down. The story blends romance, secrets, and longing in a way that feels classic and comforting. Sebastian is a former duke’s son who has lost everything and returned to England under a false identity. Disguised as a gardener, he’s focused on uncovering the truth and getting justice. Rose, on the other hand, is trapped by her title and her father’s expectations, facing a marriage she doesn’t want. Their worlds couldn’t be more different, yet they’re drawn to each other in a quiet, believable way. The romance is a true slow burn, full of small moments, growing trust, and unspoken feelings. I liked how both characters felt torn between duty and desire, which gave the story emotional depth. The hidden identity and danger kept things tense without overpowering the romance. Overall, this is a gentle but gripping story about love, freedom, and finding hope after loss. It's a nice read if you enjoy forbidden romance, emotional tension, and Regency settings. I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing and am voluntarily leaving my review.
When historical fiction is combined with mystery, it is a winning combination that can’t be beat and ‘When He Was A Duke’ is THAT book that you cannot put down! It is intense from the very beginning. Sebastian Ashford is determined to prove that his father was an innocent man and did not commit a murder of Lady Wentworth. He had been looking for a way to prove this for twelve years and he finally sees a possible opening that may allow his family’s wish to come true. As the story progresses, his meeting Rose Wentworth threw in an unexpected curve into his plot to prove Lord Wentworth had framed his father. Sebastian discovers that there are many people that work at the Wentworth estate that have heard stories about the demise of Rose’s mother or have unshared secrets from that time. He must gain their trust to discover more. This book is a definite page turner and I highly recommend it to all. Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for an early review copy at my request. All thoughts are my own and freely shared.
When He Was A Duke (The Duke's Legacy Book 1) By: Tess Thompson
5 Stars
Sebastian Ashford and his siblings lose everything when their father is tried and hung for a crime he didnt commit. Now, as a grown man, he has one goal in mind. Revenge. He hides away at the manor of the man that got his father killed. Posing as a gardener and with help from some most unlikely folks, he finds that the task he has undertaken may be harder than he ever imagined, but move forward he must, for everyone's sake.
This story was such a awesome story. It presented the times beautifully with gorgeous descriptive scenes. It was a story of revenge to begin with. It soon turns into a story that is full of mystery and drama. It was passionate and powerful and a great beginning of this series.
Tess Thompson has proved, once again, that she can do anything she sets her mind too. This was another lovely story from an amazing author. I can't wait for the next book.
*I want to thank Netgalley and the author for this book in return for my honest review*
I expected a classic Regency romance, but the story has much more emotional depth than I anticipated. Alexander carries so much responsibility and grief, and the weight of the title has shaped him into someone guarded and careful. Watching him slowly open back up was one of my favorite parts of the book.
Charlotte is such a wonderful match for him. She is warm, determined, and unwilling to let society dictate what she is allowed to feel. Every scene between them has this quiet tension that makes their relationship feel meaningful and earned. I really appreciated how their romance grows through honest conversations, vulnerability, and reconnecting with who they used to be before life became complicated.
The setting feels cozy and atmospheric, and the side characters add charm without taking attention away from the main couple. The author balances longing, tenderness, and the expectations of Regency society in a way that kept me invested from beginning to end.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for my honest review
Thank you NetGalley. This story was so sad. Sebastian's father, the Duke of Ashford is arrested for killing his neighbor's wife at a masquerade ball at their home. He was there but left before she was killed. He swears he is innocent but is hung anyway. His three children were there to see it and then is sent to a cousin who treats them like servants, worse than most servants are treated and they are only children. Everything ha been taken away. They make it through for the next twelve years and then Sebastian ha a chance to work on the husbands estate, The husband of the lady murdered. He is hired as a gardener which is what he did at his cousin's. Now to prove her husband did it. He meets the daughter and falls in love. He has a responsibility to his brother and sister but wants to keep Rose from being married off by her father to a man of his age. This is a fascinating story to read.
Revenge is best served cold in this exciting romance. Certain of his father's innocence, Sebastian will do what it takes to prove that he was unjustly charged with treason. His quest takes him to the home of the man responsible, where he comes across the sweet Lady Rose who is as much a victim as the Ashford family. It turns out that they can help one another in discovering the truth, and it does not present a pretty picture. With the help of the heartbroken Mr Hale, and the fortuitous appointment of a new constable in the village, matters come to a head and the truth is exposed. It also joins Sebastian and Rose together in a perfect and beautiful occasion that brings hope and healing to the whole community. I received a copy of this novel as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest, and voluntary review.
I fell in love with the characters in this Regency romance novel, “When He Was a Duke.” Sebastion, at 12 years old, had to grow up quickly and take care of his younger siblings. As a man, he was driven by revenge against the evil man who had taken everything from his family and his need to clear his father’s name. He did not count on meeting lovely and sweet Lady Rose, who would cause him to reconsider his priorities. What unfolds is a beautiful love story that I couldn’t put down until I reached the end. I hope there will be follow up books because I am anxious to hear the stories of Sebastian’s siblings, James and Sophia.
Thank you, Dragonblade Publishing, for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
When He Was a Duke offers a compelling mix of historical romance, mystery, and slow-burn emotion. Sebastian’s quest to clear his father’s name is gripping, and the way he navigates his feelings for Rose while undercover keeps the tension alive. I appreciated that the romance felt natural and mutual, with both characters actively working toward connection rather than overthinking every interaction. The stakes were real, and the supporting cast added depth without overshadowing the leads. My only minor quibble was that certain plot conveniences felt a bit too neat, but the pacing and character development carried the story well. Overall, it was a satisfying read that balanced suspense and heart effectively. I received an advance reader copy from NetGalley and am sharing my honest review.
Wonderful story, I was intrigued from beginning to end. The author spun a compelling and powerful story. Sebastian and his family lost everything when his father was accused of murder. But he will do all in his power to clear his father‘s name. Rose has lost her mother, and now her father was forcing her to marry a man of his choosing. I loved how the story came together, the wonderful attention to detail, the complexity of the plot and the charming, sweet romance. If you’re looking for a light historical mystery with sweet romance this book is the perfect fit. I am looking forward to more books in the series, hopefully James and Sophia have their stories told. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
When He Was A Duke is Sebastian Ashford and Lady Rose Wentworth’s historical romance that mixed with intrigue, mystery and suspense. It’s book one in The Duke’s Legacy Series and it’s a great start. Sebastian and his family lost everything including their titles when his father was accused of murder. Determined to clear his father’s name he has returned to England after the war disguised as a gardener and nothing else can get in his way until he meets Lady Rose……… What follows is a powerful and compelling story that’s also sweet, romantic and entertaining. The characters are strong and the story has depth but it was the mix of love and suspense that kept me turning the pages. I was given a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.
I really enjoyed Sebastian and Rose as a couple. He was set out for revenge on the man who destroyed his father’s name and his family. Years prior, Sebastian watched as his dad got framed (at least in his belief) for a crime he didn’t commit which led to his family losing everything, including their societal status. Rise is the daughter of the man who destroyed his family, but she isn’t what he expected.
As they spend time together, they both realize some truths about their parents and their feelings for each other grow. Whether they can survive the entire truth coming out, including who he really is, remains to be seen. I can’t wait to see his siblings find their happiness. I received an ARC and this is my honest, voluntary review.
A new venture for this author. Sebastian has sworn to seek revenge for the false accusations against his father. When Lord Ashford was falsely arrested for murder, his children were left orphaned and penniless. The children face a harsh life after witnessing the hanging of their father
Years later, Sebastian hatches a plan to return to the scene of the crime, disguised as a gardener. He meets the daughter of Lord Wentworth who is involved in all kinds of illegal activities. Rose is promised in marriage to a despicable business partner
Lots of vivid descriptions and a twisting plot line make this book easy to read.
Can love overcome the past? What will the future bring?
Thank you to the author for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.
This Historical fiction does not disappoint! This is the story of Sebastian and Lady Rose. Sebastian lost his father at a young age for a crime he did not commit. This changed his and his siblings lives forever. He can think about nothing other than finding justice for his father. Lady Rose's Mother was murdered and her father is forcing her to marry a man she does not love. There is so much thought in the details and how the times were when this setting for the book happened. It definitely makes a person think and how grateful we can be for the times we have now. This is a wonderful clean read and focuses on doing what is right and protecting those you consider family.
Thank you for the publisher for a chance to read this book. My opinions are my own.
There is nothing worse than watching your father be hung for a murder he didn't commit. I received a copy of this book for an honest review, and I absolutely loved it. Sebastian, his siblings, and Rose have suffered for years at the hand of Rose's dad. Sebastian and his siblings were forced out of their home, shunned, lost everything, were forced into labor, and abused. Rose was made to believe there was something wrong with her, not knowing about the smuggling and backward dealings of her father. Sebastian went to the manor to clear his fathers name, not knowing he would find so much more. Follow Sebastian and Rose learn what really happened to Rose's mother, find out how dirty her father was, and everything that brought them to their happily ever after.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book takes you from seeing how cruel and broken the world can make people to how amazingly kind and loving they can end up. Rose was broken when her mother was murdered when she was only 8 years old. Her courage and love gave her the life she deserved. Sebastian had his entire life crash down on him when he was a boy and led him and his siblings to living horribly tragic life’s. True love brings the two together who choose love over circumstance and danger to not only find truth and justice but the perfect happy ending they deserve. I truly hope there is a book 2 so we can see what happens in the future for not only Rose and Sebastian but all of the other characters in the book that the author, Tess Thompson brings to life as well.
An intriguing story that captured me from the beginning to the end. There were some horrible acts then suspense that made it hard to put the book down wondering what would happen next. But a sweet, unlikely friendship, turned into a love story between Sebastian and Rose, which was absolutely beautiful. A time when women had no say, Sebastian loved listening to Rose and her thoughts. I loved the strong ties between Sebastian and his siblings, and also the love that the maids and all house employees showed to Rose. Once again Tess Thompson has written a fantastic novel you don’t want to miss, I loved this regency period novel, such a wonderful book to read.
I was impressed with the writing of this new-to-me author. The back story is very tragic - Sebastian's father is accused of murdering a woman and is hanged. Of course, this turns the family upside down and now Sebastian and his siblings are just trying to survive. He eventually poses as a Gardner to gain foothold in the house, where he believes the murderer resides. Rose is the daughter. I loved all the characters and I'm glad this had a happy ending. I do love a man who can say he loves her too. Excellent writing. I hope Sebastian's siblings get their own books too. Thank you to Dragonblade for the copy of this book. Opinions are my own.
This is such a beautiful story. I highly recommend you read the book! Sebastian is the son of a Duke accused of murder and stripped of everything; his name, his home, his wealth and even worse, his life. Sebastian and his siblings were left as orphans to become servants. He has vowed to seek justice for the wrongs done to his family. After twelve years he goes undercover as a gardener at the estate of the man he suspects framed his father. Lady Rose is his enemy, or is she? When it becomes apparent her life is in danger, will Sebastian continue with his revenge or will he try to save her?
I loved this book because it's characters I fell in love with.
Lord Ashford I saw the determination to find piece for what was taken from him when he was a child.
Lady Rose I saw the hurt in her eyes when she found out what her father had done.
Sebastian Ashford wanted justice in his father's name for something he didn't do. So he went to Wentworth Manor as someone else to get the justice he wanted. In the meantime Sebastian was very careful around Lady Rose. Tess wrote an extremely well story. Tess match the characters together.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that Tess Thompson had written a Regency Romance novel. I have been following Ms Thompson for a number of years now and haven't been disappointed yet with any of her novels. There was more depth in this novel than most Regency Novels that I have read over the years. This book was too difficult to put down and had my rapt attention from the beginning. If you are a Tess Thompson, fan you'll enjoy this one. Definitely give this one a big thumbs up.
After Sebastian's father is hung for the murder of the wife of his enemy, he vows to get justice. Many years later he gets a gardener job on the estate of the murdered woman. While looking for proof of his father's innocence, he falls in love with Rose, the daughter of the house. Together they must bring Rose's cruel father to justice for the murder. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
Tess Thompson is an incredible author. Her stories are filled with real characters and real life situations. When He Was A Duke falls in line with her writing style. I was drawn in at the first chapter. Love, betrayal, suspense, revenge and more in this powerhouse of a novel. I recommend this book. I'm excited to see where this series takes us.
**I received an ARC from the publisher and all thoughts and opinions in this review are my own**
The emotional prologue had me hooked from the start (and in tears). The main characters were interesting and believable and I liked the slow burn romance between them. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it despite the author’s artistic liberties with titles and inheritance. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Sebastian had lost everything as a 12 yr old boy. He grew up just wanting to clear his Duke Ashton’s name. Rose had grown up without a mother. Lord Wentworth was a very mean and horrible person. Years later they meet under circumstances that were questionable. They worked together for discover the truth.
