"Shark Eggs" is a nice Welsh horror debut, full of smart ideas and tension. Essentially a creature feature, the story is told with great skill and an eye for detail. I hadn't realized how much I was enjoying it till it ended! Urghh... Wanted more!
Daze's novelette busies itself with the question of what might one do when in financial debt, one step before total disaster - and answers it by crafting a terrific tale about loan sharks, odd genetic experiments, mutant eggs, and the pet-sitting from hell!
For me, the writing had plenty of strong points: the story's fast-paced, with superb characterization, good dialogue, and a decent monster, as well as a good sense of setting. The weak points: it was too short to care for the main character, the guy's actions do not make all that much sense in hindsight, whereas the creature often turns the story into horror comedy instead of filling it with dread; and the ending, though good enough for a novelette or a short story, hinted at a far larger payback, which never came.
Still, I recommend it - it's a genuinely fun read!
