A cold winter, a darker secret, and a love that burns bright.

Syd thinks he's leaving betrayal behind when he boards a plane alone for what should've been his honeymoon. Instead, he lands in the frozen dark of Iceland, carrying heartbreak and trying to prove he doesn't need anyone to stand on his own.

When Caleb steps in to help at the airport, Syd doesn’t expect more than directions. But the man’s calm presence and piercing blue eyes chip away at his defenses. Caleb is kind and grounded, with a protective streak, but he's carrying a truth buried beneath the ice.

Syd’s dreams reveal what others hide, and something about Caleb’s family doesn’t quite add up. What starts as a lonely holiday becomes a connection neither expected. Trapped together, the walls between them fall as trust and tension blur into something deeper.

As the snow closes in, both must decide how much of themselves they’ll share. Intimacy builds, secrets unravel, and what began as survival starts to feel like the start of something real.

Syd and Caleb grow from emotionally guarded strangers into something more. Syd learns to trust not just Caleb but himself, while Caleb risks everything to protect a bond he didn’t plan to want.

Their relationship deepens with care and fire, built on raw honesty, tentative touches, and a bond strong enough to challenge tradition. They're not just surviving the storm. They're choosing each other through it.

A dark, steamy, MM monster Yule romance rooted in Icelandic folklore, blending forced proximity, opposites attract, and fated mates with themes of heartbreak, betrayal, isolation, supernatural justice, identity, acceptance, and found family. It’s about surviving emotional ruin, rebuilding trust, and healing through unexpected connection. At its heart, it’s about being fully seen and chosen anyway, even when the truth is monstrous.

The Elevator Pitch: A man reeling from heartbreak seeks solitude in the dark winter of Iceland, only to find himself drawn into a remote hotel’s chilling holiday traditions. As secrets tied to myth and monstrous justice unfold, he forms a powerful, unexpected bond with the enigmatic man determined to protect him. This is a dark, emotional MM monster romance filled with tension, trust, vulnerability, and love.

So all the stories our parents told us to keep us in line are true? That is the reality for Syd when he visits Iceland over Christmas. He caught his fiancee cheating on him just before their wedding. Now he's taking advantage of the honeymoon they'd planned to forget and reset his life. Meeting Caleb on the way to the hotel is both calming and unnerving. Despite any and all misgivings they have they're drawn together secrets and all. Definitely a unique holiday story.

"I know you can’t choose who you are born to be, and I know that you do what you need to do to survive but you don’t revel in it."

When I read the blurb on this book on Booksprout I had to go out and do a little research on the Yule Lads. I decided I was up for the challenge of reading/listening to this story. After I finished the book I also looked up the Yule Cat since it was also mentioned in the book. Wow, those are some vicious beings.

There are some gruesome parts in this book that gave me the heebiejeebies. Guy Veryzer was the perfect pick to narrate this book, well played BL Maxwell. He's got the kind of voice that was perfect for this book.

I was going to say this book was short and sweet but I don't think you can call anything about this book sweet, lol. It is definitely short at 65 pages.

After discovering his fiancé’s betrayal, Syd Dufort escapes to Iceland on what should have been his honeymoon, hoping to avoid the pain of facing his family during the holidays. But the bleak winter landscape only deepens his doubts. At the airport, he meets Caleb Mies, whose family owns the remote hotel where Syd is staying. Caleb is kind, attentive, and unexpectedly drawn to Syd, though his family’s mysterious Yule tradition carries a darker edge. As the holiday approaches, both men wrestle with attraction, fear, and the secrets they keep. Under the long Icelandic winter nights, revelations will emerge—and Syd and Caleb must decide whether love can survive the shadows of Yule.

This was a dark short story that was a blend of heartbreak, mystery, and the haunting beauty of Yule traditions. I loved that the Icelandic winter setting was a metaphor for isolation and emotional numbness, showing how heartbreak can drive us to seek refuge in unfamiliar places. I liked how the story showed that secrecy can protect but also isolate, and how revelation—though painful—can be the only path to intimacy and transformation. In summary this story showed that connection in the coldest places, confronting secrets through tradition, and discovering that love can survive even in shadowed, haunted spaces. This was an MM story with mature content.

This is a review for the audiobook.
Iceland has a pretty dark and scary folklore tradition. The Yule Lads or Jólasveinar, were 13 troll brothers. In the modern retelling of the tales, the Lads are pranksters, scaring rather than eating children. BL Maxwell bases this story on the earlier myths, the ones where the Lads actually do eat people, giving it a modern twist. The Jólasveinar family own a resort outside Reykjavik, open to all year round except for the thirteen days/nights of Yule.
Syd Dufort was supposed to honeymoon in Iceland, a destination chosen by his fiancé. Syd called off the wedding after finding his boyfriend in their bed, with another man. The trip to Iceland was fully paid for, so he decided to go alone. Caleb Mies, one of the thirteen, spends his year in the human realm hunting Yule sacrifices and directing them to the hotel. He immediately realizes that Syd has a pure soul, and he'll do anything to keep him safe.
Guy Veryzer has an unique voice, best suited, in my opinion, to narrating paranormal. His gravelly voice had me at the edge of my seat, He caught Syd's angsty indecision so well. And Caleb was equal parts creepy and sweet.
The audio is only an hour and a half long. However, it packs one heck of a story.

Such a moody, emotionally charged MM romance with a supernatural twist, that i thoroughly enjoyed. This dark winter romance blends heartbreak, folklore, and slow-burn tension into something quietly captivating. Syd arrives in Iceland hoping distance will dull the sting of betrayal, only to find himself surrounded by unfamiliar darkness, both the literal kind and the kind that clings to old traditions. Caleb’s steady warmth is the first comfort Syd allows himself, though it’s clear from the start that the man is carrying more than he lets on.

The isolated hotel setting adds an eerie edge, and BL uses the long nights and creeping unease to build both atmosphere and intimacy. As the Yule season approaches, the secrets woven through Caleb’s family become harder to ignore, and the chemistry between the two men deepens, perfectly in tandem with the tension.

What I loved though is how their connection grew not from convenience, but from choice, these two guarded men deciding, reluctantly at first, to trust each other. Syd’s gradual healing and Caleb’s quiet devotion felt believable and tender, even as the narrative leans into its darker, folkloric roots. Amazing read!.

So I've read quite a few books by this author but have yet to read one quite like this. I wasn't sure what I was expecting but I wasn't disappointed. The story starts with Syd being heartbroken over a cheating fiancé and deciding to go to Iceland for what was supposed to be their honeymoon as a sort of F you to his scumbag ex. There he meets Caleb and they quickly hit it off. There's attraction and feelings there but both men haven't known each other long and they have their own secrets. When they find out Syd is staying at the hotel Caleb's family owns it's the perfect opportunity to get to know each other better and that's when things get interesting. I love how authors are able to make a short story or novella come alive and are able to put a whole story and concept and make us fall in love. I definitely would have read this book even if it was longer. There's a bit of everything. Heartbreak, mystery, falling in love and acceptance. I loved Syd and Caleb together and really enjoyed this book.

I really like BL Maxwell, and when I saw the ARC opportunity , I jumped at it, and I leave my voluntary review. This is a really short novella, but it’s surprisingly good. I could see this as a full book, not their romance only, but Caleb’s life before meeting Syd, and also his brother’s lives. Maybe a series of novellas, because I found the premise fascinating, and I would love to see it more developed. It isn’t so much of an insta-love, but an instant connection made stronger through time, kindness, and sharing their true selves. The only issue I had was the fact that it was so short! I was enjoying myself immensely and bam, the end. But there’s a lot of lore in those few pages, and a fascinating one, and I enjoyed the morally grey area that is being hinted at. Very good read indeed.

I had not heard of the Icelandic Christmas myth about the sons and their inhuman mother who eat humans but this was a most interesting introduction to the story.

After discovering his ex-fiance was cheating on him, Syd Dufort comes to Iceland on their honeymoon trip. He meets Caleb, one of the owners of the hotel at the airport and is helped by him.

They have some things to get past, but find something that was missing for them in each other. A lovely little holiday story with an intriguing last line.

I truly loved this story. Syd has no fear of Caleb and truly craves being with him. Yes Caleb is a “monster” but he basically gets rid of evil people for the most part. I love how Syd can see the truth of a person in his sleep and knows who is and isn’t bad. He truly loves Caleb and wants him to be happy even though he knows he kills (evil) people he truly loves him. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves a good scaryish mm holiday romance of a sort.

This was a short and unique read that I enjoyed very much! Syd was headed to what was supposed to be his honeymoon in Iceland. On the way, he met Caleb, whose family owned the hotel Syd was staying. These two had a connection right from the start. They’re both very interesting characters and both have secrets! I enjoyed these two and loved how they accepted each other unconditionally! Caleb’s family were actually sweet! Very enjoyable!.

Dark Christmas PNR romance

This was intriguing and quickly had me hooked.
Syd is trying to recover from the shambles of his life after his now ex fiancé is caught cheating.
He heads off to Iceland to heal with the now defunct honeymoon trip.
He's picked up by Caleb, someone who maneuvered things to bring Syd to Iceland.
Syd also has a secret and both men need to divulge the truth to one another if they want any hope of a relationship.
I really enjoyed the immersion into Iceland and Scandinavian lore.

Loved it.

Our hero is heartbroken and makes the trip supposed to be made with his new husband by his own.

Enter an employee from the hotel he will be staying at, who happens to be something more than mere human.

Great read about Christmas traditions (different than what I am used to😉), love and seeing who someone really is.

Just read it👍.

Every year Caleb goes back to Iceland to enjoy Yule with his mother and thirteen brothers. Syd who had been cheated on by his fiancé Michael decided to enjoy the honeymoon trip to Iceland after the break up. Since Caleb’s family runs the hotel Syd is staying at they get acquainted on the shuttle. This is a slightly dark, short paranormal Christmas story, with a happy ending. Also very interesting to read because of the Icelandic and Scandinavian lore.

I really was a bit sad the story ended so quickly!! I loved it!!!!
The unexpected turn in the first chapters was something that made this story unique. The folklore where the story is written around, is fun, and the change to people that are evil is genius!
I would surely recommend this book to all my friends and family, and everyone who's looking for a short fun romantic monster story!!.

Not exactly what I expected.

This is a short, somewhat sweet (despite subject matter), slow-burn romance.

The tale deals with Icelandic folklore and some supernatural aspects.

It was an enjoyable read with a few dark elements and a hint of spice at the end but overall two characters who find their person/being.

Audiobook - good job by the narrator, I liked the accents.
Story - 3 stars. A reasonable short listen, with a light version of a darker monster romance. The Yule brothers and their mother felt more like a nice family than a bunch of awful beings eating humans every year. What made no sense to me was Syd being able to see everyone in dreams - but not his apparently evil ex. I would have enjoyed it more if the ex had been there as originally planned 😉.

From reading the blurb I thought this was going to be a lot darker than it was.
Syd dumps his fiance but decides to take the honeymoon to Iceland. At the airport he meets Caleb, who is the son of the hotel owner where Syd is staying.
As Syd is good he escapes the fate of the others in the hotel. Would have liked it to be longer.
