The Glass Coffin Society is a character-driven urban fantasy adventure with a Snow White–inspired bloodline mystery set against the atmospheric backdrop of a gritty old-world city! It’s the second book in The Tales of Märchen series, written by award-winning narrator (and now successful author) Shiromi Arserio, who also narrates both audiobooks in this series, making them even more immersive!

It’s not recommended to read this book as a standalone, as the story picks up right after the events of book one—and without knowing the established relationships and events surrounding the major “heist” (in book one), the story may be confusing. Both books are shorter than 400 pages and extremely bingeable—so if this book sounds intriguing, be sure to read them back-to-back to get fully acquainted with the world-building, wonderful ragtag crew, and their unforgettable adventures!

The story opens with Samara and her ragtag crew still reeling after their audacious heist. They’ve stolen the last living descendant of Snow White (Eloise), and their narrow escape has painted targets on their backs. Forced into a leadership role she never wanted, Samara must protect Eloise while navigating rising tensions, magical threats, and shifting loyalties within her own found family. As a brutal gang war ignites across the city-state of Märchen, enemies close in and the stakes climb higher, and the group is pushed into a race for survival without knowing who they can truly trust!

At the heart of this story (and book one) is Samara Dawa, a former assassin who’s become the reluctant heroine/leader to a ragtag crew of rebels. Her vengeance-fueled past continues to shape her decisions in this book, and her feisty, unpredictable nature makes her so interesting—especially in her dialogue with enemies! In this story she wrestles with loyalty, guilt, and power, mostly with her former thieves guild employer “The Lions,” and in her relationships with Calista, the matriarch of the House of Assassins, and the City Magistrate. She makes compromises and is forced into uneasy alliances to put her plans into action, which makes the story compelling and multi-layered! Her relationship with Gerda, which had intimate suggestions in book one, continues to evolve in this book—and it not only gives the story a fresh take on a sapphic romance but also another layer to Samara’s character that she doesn’t display anywhere else in the story!

The rest of her crew—Seb, the insider; Art (the explosives expert); and Anna and Eloise (both magic users)—feel like a found family from the start, and their bonds only deepen in this book. Art’s fractured relationship with his father, the powerful Lord Templeton, is further explored in this book—and, by the end, readers may be divided on who’s really being treated unfairly. The other standout relationship is between Anna and Eloise. Anna’s magic evolves with help from Eloise, and as the only two magic users, their skills are increasingly essential in combats and in fooling their enemies, adding a lot of magical intrigue to the story! A new villain emerges in the story—“The Restorationists,” a group who want the return of a magical monarchy with “Eloise” as queen—but their intentions are far from loyal, and soon Eloise is seen as a target with agency, mystery, and danger!

Arserio paces the novel beautifully. The opening chapters are slower paced and full of captivating dialogue, as Samara’s crew scrambles to recover and assess the consequences of the heist. Soon, Samara’s old foes plan vengeance for losses and betrayals in the heist, and a gang war explodes in Märchen. With magical combats, a major attack, shifting loyalties, and constant danger for the crew, the suspense and stakes ramp up tenfold, making every chapter feel urgent! From there the narrative is pretty relentless—the crew are thrust forward to a journey to confront their enemies, but there’s much more danger than they anticipate! By the end, the character arcs are pronounced, and the resolution is satisfying while leaving room for more intrigue and world-building expansion. Afterwards, readers will be eager for more books in the series and further adventures with the beloved characters!

Overall, The Glass Coffin Society is a gritty urban fantasy with a fairytale twist, memorable characters, and a highly original magic system and storyline! The pacing from slow-burn to heart-pounding intensity is masterfully executed, and the stakes (both emotional and physical) are always interesting! This book and series is a must-read for anyone who loves thrilling heist stories, morally grey characters, ragtag crew found-family dynamics, and dark fairy-tale reimaginings! If all this sounds intriguing, don’t hesitate to grab both books and plan a binge read—the characters will stay with you, and you’ll be eager for more tales in the city-state of Märchen!

Thanks to NetGalley for the free review copy of this audiobook!

The Order of Grimm was the first book I read this year and remains one of my favourites of the year so far. I was thrilled to see a sequel arrive so quickly and even happier to discover it is just as brilliant as the first book! The Glass Coffin Society picks up a little after the events of book one and it's not too long before the crew is back together again, repairing friendships, forging new ones and off on another escapade!

The characters are so well written, with sharp and witty dialogue, and it was brilliant to get to learn more about the magic in this world through Ana and Eloise. The plot pacing was tight and kept me hooked to every word. Each chapter brought new intrigue and excitement.

I can't wait to read more books in this series and I hope more people discover Shiromi Arserio's work. She deserves to be up in the charts with the likes of Leigh Bardugo!

The Glass Coffin Society (sequel to The Order of Grimm) is one of those rare sequels that doesn’t just continue the story…it sharpens it. Shiromi Arserio drops you right back into the gang-ruled city of Märchen with the kind of confidence only an author who knows her world inside-out can pull off. The result is immersive, gritty, and unexpectedly emotional.

The book picks up in the aftermath of a heist gone very, very sideways. Samara (former assassin, reluctant leader, chaos magnet) is trying to keep her crew alive while every rival gang, mercenary, and shadowy Order seems to have them on a kill/silence list. What I loved most is how the plot never loses sight of the people at the center of the storm. Samara’s crew isn’t just a band of thieves; they’re a messy, loyal, found family with complicated pasts and even more complicated morals. Their banter, their fractures, and their devotion to each other make the stakes feel personal on every page.

Arserio’s worldbuilding deserves its own applause. Märchen feels alive: the political tension, the underground networks, the fairytale-tinged magic, and the “something ancient is stirring under the floorboards” vibe all intertwine beautifully. The Snow White-bloodline spin adds a layer of mythic intrigue without ever derailing the street-level grit of the story. It’s an urban fantasy that knows exactly what it wants to be… atmospheric, dangerous, and character-driven.

And if you’re an audiobook listener? The narration is phenomenal. Arserio gives every character a distinct emotional texture, turning tense stand-offs and quiet confessions into moments that linger. It feels almost cinematic.

Regarding the pacing, the book starts as a slow burn while the crew navigates the fallout of book one. Then the fuse hits the powder, and the back half is a nonstop escalation of danger, magic, and heartbreak. By the end, everything lands with that perfect blend of payoff and setup for what’s coming next.

In short: If you enjoy found family, orally grey thieves, fairytale shadows, political intrigue, and a world that’s equal parts magic and back-alley trouble, then this series is absolutely worth your time. This book is enthralling, heartfelt, and wonderfully crafted – a standout sequel that raises the stakes in every way.

What an excellent follow-up! This sequel takes everything I loved about the first book and makes it more complex emotionally, politically, and magically.

While there’s sapphic romance woven in, this is very much a story where found family is front and center: messy, loyal, morally conflicted people choosing each other anyway. Watching these characters show up for one another, even when it costs them, even when they hurt one another... that's what makes found family so incredible.

Samara really shines as a leader who’s trying to do the right thing rather than the easiest or most profitable one, and I loved seeing her wrestle with those choices given what we know of her background and with the fallout from those she cares for. Art’s relationship with his father becomes even more layered and interesting. Anna and Eloise are a perfect friendly twosome with the way their magic evolves together, and how essential they become to the story.

The world-building expands beautifully. We learn more about the Order, the magic system, and the political underbelly of the city, all without slowing the pace. The looming gang war and attempted coup keep the plot moving, and the stakes are high. There’s also a fascinating thematic thread about power and truth and I loved that the story doesn’t offer easy answers.

The whole thing has that irresistible caper (not heist this time) energy layered with fairytale vibes and nods to Snow White lore that feel clever instead of overdone. I read the physical book, but I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook narration because this author is an INCREDIBLE narrator first and foremost and I love when authors read their own books.

Honestly? I could read at LEAST a dozen more books in this world. This series just keeps getting stronger, and I’m thrilled to see where it goes next.

Thanks so much to the author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

I would like to thank the publisher for sending me an audio-arc in exchange for an honest review through NetGalley.

Samara and her crew had been hired for a heist – to steal away a lost princess from an auction held by the Order of the Grimm and bring her back to the people who had hired them. Instead of taking her back, they decide to let her go, thus painting a target on their backs and forfeiting the money they had been promised. Now, with different gangs going to war within Marchen, it’s up to Samara to get her crew back together if they have any hope of surviving not just the war, but a coup that threatens the future of Marchen.

A round of applause for yet another great installment in this series. I love the way that we get Ocean’s Eleven/Six of Crows with a bit of the fairytale vibes that I love. I like the fact that here we see Samara as she struggles to do the right thing and not just the easiest or most profitable. The underlying theme of what is morally right in a city/situation where nothing is/leans more towards morally gray is something we got a glimpse of towards the end of book one, but here it’s a main theme that the group wrestles with. I loved seeing more of the group and getting more background information on the Order. I loved the plot of the coup and the gang war that breaks out in the city because of their decisions. Overall, I really enjoyed this, and I also really enjoyed the audiobook narration and would definitely recommend it.

Thank you so much to the author or the gifted review copy! ✨

I enjoyed this book a lot, it was brilliantly written and kept me engaged until the end.
It was great to see the characters again. I was thinking about the best way to describe them, because “interesting” is not enough, they are more like people you’d really want to meet in real life, and in that way they also felt very real.
I truly loved Samara. I’ve read many books featuring intelligent, strong female leads where that strength often feels forced or superficial. Samara is different. She’s genuinely intelligent, flawed in believable ways, and, like the other characters, feels completely real.

The world is also just as alive as the characters, it’s gritty, and with a lot of political intrigue.
As for the plot I didn’t know where it would go, followed with interest until the end, and had a great time doing so.

I cannot say more as this is the second book in a series and don’t want to give spoilers. I also posted about the first book “The Order of Grimm” if you want to check it out.

Check out this series if you like:

I was given an advanced reader copy of this work in audio book format from Netgalley Free of charge in return from an honest review.
The Narration is excellent because its Narration is provided by the Author so she knows exactly how to pronounce everything and how everything should be said.

The story takes place just weeks after the events of The Order of Grimm. The team has celebrated but parted ways on bad terms after Sam returns their coin and made the lost princess disappear. She knew the crew would be less than thrilled but she didn't expect them to walk away.

Now they find themselves watching their backs as a brutal gang war threatens the peace of Marchen. Caught in the middle Sarmara must not only reunite her people and try to figure out how to put things right.

oh and stop a potential coup on the neighbouring government.

This has wonderful character development, the story moves forward at a really fast pace that keeps you guessing and you have to know how its going to end. This was the perfect story and follow up to the 1st and i have a feeling that its just going to get better. I cant wait for the next instalment of this series!

*** Possible Spoilers ***

If I like a book, I normally give it 5 stars. Likewise, if I dislike it, I give it 1 star. The only time I use 3 stars is if a book is really bland, or, in this case, if there are some things I loved and some I hated.
The good news is the author is a competent wordsmith. In addition, she keeps the plot moving nicely. The bad news is this author, like many others, seems to feel it necessary to have her protagonist constantly second-guess herself. Toss in a bit of angst, and a lot of guilt and you pretty much have the central character. Frankly I sick of it. Ms. Arserio is far from alone in this trait. There seems to be a trend among modern authors, and particularly female one - although some males are just as bad - to try to make parts of their books as maudlin as possible. I'm not sure why this is but I'm having increasing difficulty finding authors who tell a good story without writing goo all over the page. If you like that sort of stuff, this author writes well, but as for me, I think I'll look elsewhere for my reading material.

Samara is still confident in her decision to let Eloise go free, but it has fractured the confidence and the closeness of her crew. As the last descendant of Snow White, Eloise is being hunted by a group determined to overthrow the elected government of their country and put her on a throne she never wanted. Unfortunately, there are various factions in Marchon hunting Samara and her friends, violent gang war is erupting in the streets, and once again the crew must get together and attempt to prevent a political coup. I absolutely loved this book and these wonderfully written characters. Fast-paced and clever dialog kept me glued to the pages of this book. Unexpected plot twists, intense violence, magic, and political intrigue that kept me entertained and made it impossible to put this book down. I loved this book, and I recommend it to other readers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provided by the author.

I like when bad things happen to specific kinds of folks, and Shiromi Arserio delivered that in "The Glass Coffin Society." continuing her written and narrated Tales of Märchen series, it will be available 11 November.

Like all good heists, that went sideways on the money front. Ethically though, the crew did right. But by not handing over the only living descendant of Queen White over they have painted a target on their backs. Now their people are getting pulled into the conflict and some vows of non-violence are getting a bit tested.

Reasons to read:
-Just choosing not to engage with some weirdo's plot
-Still being aggravating while having a moment of catharsis
-Bad things happen to rather awful people
-The crew is just fun, the moments of quiet growth for everyone are so nice

Cons:
-RIP a lot of good booze

I jumped into this series with the second book and I can't wait to read the first book now that I've finished this one!

This is a different take on a Snow White story and it's super creative! It's like nothing I've read before and I wasn't disappointed. I love when fairy tales are given another chance at a life they never knew they could have. The narrator made the story come to life in a way that's different than most narrators which I appreciate. I think it's because it's narrated by the person who wrote the story and puts the passion into reading each character like they had written them. Trust me, it makes a world of a difference. I couldn't get enough of this!

I would love to thank the author, narrator, publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved The Glass Coffin Society!

This book picks up not long after the end of book one, and while it's less of a heist and more of a long, intricate caper, it adds so much depth to the characters I already adored. Samara and her crew continue to be incredible. We get to see their relationships change and grow as their loyalty and trust are tested again and again by different enemies

I also LOVED how the world expanded beyond Marchen! The larger political landscape and deeper mysteries make this world feel even more alive and immersive.

I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series; I’m absolutely hooked and dying for more!

Thank you for this ARC, all opinions are my own!

This is book two in the series. Samara and her crew managed to steal the last living descendant of Snow White, but then they let her go. Now they are being hunted as well as the girl. Gang war is threatening to erupt in Marchen. Samara’s crew will be together again to try and stop a potential coup.

Really enjoyed this well written and well narrated by the author (I listened to the audiobook). Very good characters with different skills and strengths will put their safety on the line in a well paced novel. They will do what they believe to be right. There will be adventures, fighting, magic, family, identity and betrayal. A good read.

Thank you NetGalley for sending me the audiobook of this to review.
I read the first book as part of a tour earlier this year and fell in love with the characters and the story so was excited to listen to this.
Once again Shiromi writes a fantastic story. This books picks up straight after book 1 and the crew are back together for another heist.
I love how this series isn’t a typical fantasy book. The characters are well written and the story based more on the heist and crew element than on fantasy with bits of magic added in.
I can’t wait to read book 3

Sequels sometimes fall short BUT The Glass Coffin Society is a BRILLIANT follow up for the first book in this series. The Order of Grimm was filled with high stakes action, brutal betrayals, and found family. Glass Coffin did not fall short of the expectations I had going into it.
