English (انگلیسی)
Returning to an Old Summer
I first read Black Beauty in my early teens, around thirteen or fourteen, borrowing it from my local library.
It was that summer when I had just begun reading more seriously, and English literature was one of the first worlds I stepped into.
Since then, spring and summer have become my personal seasons for reading English classics — a quiet ritual I try to honor every year. This summer, I decided to revisit the book, by doing a buddy-read with a friend from Goodreads.
And perhaps it was that old affectionthat made me search for the exact translation I loved, despite its rarity, just so I could keep a printed copy in my library.
Victorian England and Its Social Landscape 🌫️📜
The novel was written during the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era —
a time when printing, lighting, heating, and middle‑class living conditions were rapidly improving, giving people more opportunities to read.
Much like Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Black Beauty was shaped by the moral and social concerns of its time.Anna Sewell, like Harriet Beecher Stowe, was deeply aware of her society and knew how to convey her message with clarity and purpose.
The Significance of the Book and Its Author🐎📚
That a woman, living under the heavy restrictions of her era, created a work of this scale is remarkable in itself.
Black Beauty remains one of the most important works on animal behavior and humane treatment, and still stands as a powerful moral voice in classic literature.
And interestingly, Ingmar Bergman read the book in childhood and later wrote in The Magic Lantern about its emotional and imaginative impact on him —
a connection that elevates the book far beyond children’s literature.
How Anna Sewell’s Bond with Horses Began🌾👧🏻
Before Anna’s childhood accident, her family had already made a significant decision:
they left London — its noise, pollution, and financial pressures — and moved to the countryside in search of a calmer, healthier life.
Anna grew up among horses; she watched them, lived beside them, and formed her first emotional connection with animals there.Later, on her way home from school, she fell and severely twisted her ankle.
Medical care at the time was limited, and such injuries often lasted a lifetime.
The accident meant:
●she couldn’t walk long distances
●her physical activity was restricted
●and she began using horse‑drawn carriages for daily transportation
This daily closeness deepened her understanding.
She saw the pain, joy, labor, and vulnerability of horses firsthand — and could never remain indifferent to their mistreatment. This personal history became the moral core of Black Beauty.
A Non‑Human Narrator: Sewell’s Literary Boldness ✨️🐴
In an era when nearly all novels had human narrators — men, women, or children —
Anna Sewell chose the voice of a horse.This wasn’t just unusual;
it was a literary act of courage.“Sewell tells the story from his perspective with such honesty and delicacy that the reader isn’t merely following the life of a horse, but experiencing the inner world of a living being — its pain, hope, fear, and loyalty.”
This first‑person narration transforms the book from a simple story into an ethical and emotional experience.
Tone, Atmosphere, and the Rural World 🏡🌿
Sewell’s tone is calm, dignified, and moral —
never preachy, never exaggerated, always steady and humane.Much of the story unfolds in rural England, in villages and farms around London;
places that feel like quiet summer retreats.
Alongside the horse’s journey, we learn about the everyday life of the era — landowners, farmers, stable workers, and the rhythms of countryside living.
The Rhythm of Adventure 📖🛤
Sewell didn’t write only a moral tale;
she preserved the rhythm of a true adventure throughout the book.
Each chapter feels like a “station” in Black Beauty’s journey:
new homes, new owners, dangers, hopes, and moments when the horse must adapt to the world again. This structure makes the book not only instructive but genuinely engaging and compelling.
Behavior and Accuracy 🔍🐴
Sewell’s knowledge of horse behavior is astonishing.
The details of communication, care, and handling are so accurate that every time my buddy‑reader and I looked something up, we found the book perfectly aligned with reality.
On the Persian Translation
of the Work 📘🖊
Several Persian translations of this work have been published, but the versions by Omid Eghtedari and Manouchehr Karimzadeh — despite being scarce and not reprinted very often — stand among the finest Persian editions. Their translation conveys the spirit and tone of the original with notable care and subtlety, making the reading experience smooth, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable.
Adaptations 🎬📽
Black Beauty has eight film adaptations.
I plan to watch all of them by the end of the year.
I can’t choose a favorite yet — I need to see them all first.
Black Beauty: An Emotional Legacy 💛🌿
If you’re interested in animal behavior, Black Beauty is one of the finest choices.
If you enjoy social novels or classic literature, I strongly recommend it.
This book is not merely the story of a horse;
it is a story about kindness, responsibility, and the relationship between humans and nature.I grew up surrounded by animals and nature — always with birds around me — and I’m still drawn to people who share that sensitivity.
Maybe that’s why I first picked up Black Beauty, and I still think that if I ever become a mother, I’d want my children to love nature and read this book; not just as a story, but as a lesson in compassion toward living beings.Black Beauty is one of those books that stays with you if you read it in your youth —
like a summer memory that never fades.
