No Brain the Same: Neurodivergent Young Activists Shaping Our Future

Rate this book
Through powerful poems, this book honors neurodivergent youth activists transforming their communities and invites kids to act—continuing the spirit of No Voice Too Small and No World Too Big.

Featuring Billie Eilish, Dara McAnulty, and Lydia X. Z. Brown, these fourteen poems spotlight neurodivergent activists inspiring kids ages 5 to 9 to make change.

These fourteen neurodivergent activists began their work when they were young and continue it now, changing systems, politics, policies, and more. The book features poems written by poets who have something in common with each activist.

Fourteen poems by CooXooEii Black, Vanessa Brantley-Newton, e.E. Charlton-Trujillo, Liv Mammone, Lyn Miller-Lachmann, K. A. Reynolds, and others honor activists from all over the world and the United States. Additional text goes into detail about each activist's life and how readers can get involved.

No brain the same - 3,75/5 - lu en anglais. Reviews in english & in french.
(review in french below.)

I greatly appreciate the diversity illustrated in the book. I wanted to annotate so many passages that I would have highlighted if I had a physical copy.

Each double-page spread features a poem, written by or inspired by a neurodivergent artist, illustrated visuals, a text that tells their story, and a message to take from it.

💬 "Representation matters. When others see you doing what you love, they know they belong, too."

💬 "Sharing your struggles helps you and shows others they are not alone."

This book is a rich resource on so many topics. It's a collection of poetry, art, and information. It celebrates diversity, individuals voices, differences, and the creativity that has led to progress, inclusion, and so much more.

The first poem, We are the future, by Jeanette Bradley, is quite an introduction to the content of the book. It shows how resourceful this new generation is and will be for our futur. Making things better, more open, less violent, more compréhensive, accessible for everyone, empowering people around them and the readers of this book.

✨ "We are the open dreamers, the deep feelers, the big thinkers, the magic makers.

We are the truth speakers, the heart singers, the peace fighters, the justice leaders.

We are the fierce self-lovers, the laughing healers, the bond builders, the hope bringers.

We are the path pavers, the leap takers, the quest seekers, the system changers." ✨

We learn about what is changing and what has enabled this change. The book addresses numerous topics, such as the specificities of a variety of neurodiversities, accessibility, sharing, harassment, self-confidence, nature, emotions, connection, police violence, domestic abuse and gun violence, activism, the protection and defense of individuals and communities, the development of self-esteem, and more.

We learn about the past, the stories of the people, and anecdotes related to the individuals represented in the poems.

💬 "Use your unique perspective to solve problems."

💬 "Celebrate all parts of you. By being open, you help yourself while giving others courage to do the same."

No brain the same is a book one could read and reread many times. Flip through it over the years so as not to forget the advice shared. Learn, remember, and apply the displayed and shared ideas. It contains a well explained glossary about the covered topics, and one about the poetry forms used.

💬 "Keep a journal to process your deep feelings."

💬 "Write a poem, make art, or use movement to communicate your message."

💬 "Work with friends for social change and heal yourself in the process."

Yet another proof that we must listen to those affected to find help, appropriate solutions, improvements, and paths forward. And to make this world more welcoming, compassionate, and livable for everyone.

No brain the same is an empowering book, with a really needed message and good reminders.

Believe, reach and lead.

"You have value.
You are not broken.
You are not invisible.
You are capable of incredible things.

It's OK if you're not OK.
You are not alone.
You can find joy.
You can solve big problems with others.

You can speak out.
Your words matter.
Your experiences matter.
You can shape your own path.
You can heal by taking action.
You have the power to make change."

Thank you to Charlesbridge and Netgalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

💬 "Representation matters. When others see you doing what you love, they know they belong, too."

💬 "Sharing your struggles helps you and shows others they are not alone."

💬 "Use your unique perspective to solve problems."

💬 "Celebrate all parts of you. By being open, you help yourself while giving others courage to do the same."

I really love the concept of this book and the illustrations. I definitely see this as something that an older child could really learn a lot from and find new passions and confidence.

I do wish it was formatted differently. Each page features a poem on the left, an illustration in the middle, and then a about the activist on the right. The poems are written by poets and at the very end of the book there is an about the poet section. For me personally I would have liked to see the about the activist first, then the illustration, and then the poem on the right with the about the poet at the bottom. I think it would have all tied in together better fuck and allowed people to read the poem with more understanding.

Overall though I think the content of this is really great and allowed me to learn about new young activists as well.

Young readers love a series...and NO BRAIN THE SAME is the third anthology in this series of young activists who are helping to shape our world. In this Book #3 we find out about 14 amazing neurodivergent young activists and each has a poem...and each poem is a different type of poem, including free-verse, tercet series, sonnet, and more...what a great resource for teachers!

Some of them are famous people - and others may be names that students have never heard of but need to know..
And the message to readers is that nothing is impossible if you can imagine it...and that no matter who or where you are, you can make a difference.
Highly recommend!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
No Brain the Same is the kind of book that doesn’t just inform — it affirms. It celebrates neurodivergent kids not as exceptions, but as leaders, creators, and changemakers whose voices matter right now.

This collection of poems feels powerful in a quiet, steady way. Each piece highlights a young activist who saw something in the world that needed shifting and stepped forward with courage, creativity, and conviction. The poets — many of whom share lived experiences with the activists they honor — bring a depth and authenticity that makes every page feel personal.

As a mom to an autistic child, this book hit me in a place I don’t always have words for. Seeing neurodivergent kids celebrated not for “overcoming,” but for being exactly who they are — brilliant, passionate, deeply feeling, world‑shaping — is something I wish every child could grow up seeing. My son deserves stories that reflect his strengths, his intensity, his way of thinking, and this book offers that with tenderness and pride. It reminded me again that neurodivergent kids don’t need fixing; they need space, support, and the freedom to lead in the ways only they can.

The range of activists — from Billie Eilish to Dara McAnulty to Ly Xīnzhèn M. Zhangsūn Brown — shows kids that there’s no single way to be neurodivergent and no single way to make a difference. The backmatter adds depth, giving families real ways to get involved and continue the work these young leaders have started.

This is a powerful, necessary book — one that honors neurodivergent brilliance and invites every child to imagine themselves as someone who can spark change. I’m grateful it exists, and I’m even more grateful for what it will mean to kids like my son.

This series continues to be a favorite of mine. Book three, NO BRAIN THE SAME, featuring 14 amazing neurodivergent young activists does not disappoint. Each person highlighted has an accompaying poem; types of poems, such as free-verse, tercet series, sonnet, etc. are identified (a bonus for educators)

Kids will recognize some of the famous people (Billie Eilish) who are included but will also get to know some people they may not have encountered before. It is uplifting to see each person's impact on the world so far. The takeaway after reading the poems and bios is that, no matter who you are, you are amazing and you can do amazing things.

The art is gorgeous. Each featured person stands out against a pleasing, neutral background. Clues as to that person's accomplishments are hinted at in the art. A favorite of mine is the concrete poem that connects to the Minecraft in Andy Smith's bio.

I look forward to sharing the print copy I preordered with my family.

No Brain the Same introduces fourteen neurodivergent activists through poetry. Each one is written by a different author, and several types of poetry are used. Each activist has a vibrant and colorful portrait of themself, allowing readers to connect stories to faces.

I thought this was a lovely introduction to some amazing people. All children can be inspired by these activists, especially those who are neurodivergent. Like many of the activists, neurodivergent children often face bullying from their peers. Some think that because of their differences, they can't achieve. These poems show they absolutely can.

Some of the poems didn't flow quite right for me, so I knocked down a star. Still, I would be happy to share this book with children in a library setting. I also greatly appreciate Billie Eilish being included, as a lot of people are already familiar with her work.

No Brain the Same pairs fourteen neurodivergent poets with the stories of real activists from around the world. With thoughtful notes about each activist’s work, this collection empowers kids to see advocacy, creativity, and difference as sources of strength.

What I loved most about this book was its wide variety of voices. Each poem feels distinct, reflecting both the poet’s style and the activist’s spirit. I especially appreciated the addition of the glossary and the explanations of different poetic forms, which were such an unexpected delight. They invite readers to see that there’s no single “right” way to create or communicate. I also loved the flexible format; it’s perfect for dipping in and out, making it easy to explore at your own pace or share piece by piece.

Thank you to Charlesbridge and NetGalley for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

No Brain the Same is an anthology of collected poems written by famous authors who were inspired by the lives of fourteen young, neurodivergent activists. Each author's individual style shines through in their odes, ranging from free verse to sonnets. The different poetry styles keeps the volume fresh and intriguing for young readers while introducing them to different types of poetry. The illustrations are colorful and realistic, faithfully depicting their subjects. The volume also includes a glossary of terms related to neurodivergence and the different kinds of poems that appear in the book. The book ends with a short bio for each poet. This book represents a significant part of the population and can help younger readers grapple with their own neurodivergence and understand others better. This copy was provided by NetGalley.

In this picture book collection of poems about 14 real neurodivergent children around the world, readers learn about overcoming disabilities and focusing on what they can do—overcome and lead. Each child leader is an advocate and champions others who might be in the same disposition. These wonderful examples show the world what anyone is capable of if they only believe, reach, and lead. Back matter includes a glossary, information about each poet, and the types of poetry included. Teachers and librarians can use this book and its companion books in the series to inspire students. Lovely illustrations by J. Bradley make this a cozy, yet informative and important read for all.

Review to be added to Amazon UK and US on 2 June 2026 - publication day!

I thought that this was an excellent book to read!

There is a great mix of different poems and people who have different neurodivergent backgrounds.
I thought that this was an additive read. The poems were really well written and I liked the information section too on the different activities chosen - there are more out there and I would certainly pick up a follow on book too if one was written.

The key message from the book is "Believe in yourself, Reach out to others and Lead"

The illustrations in the book were wonderful and they really made the book come to life - it is all very well done.

It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended

Like the previous two books in the series, NO BRAIN THE SAME highlights young people who have made the world a better place. This particular book focuses on those with diagnosed disabilities who have become activists to enlighten others and make life more equitable for others in the same circumstance or situation. Some are world famous (e.g. Billie Eilish) while others are less well-known, but they all have accomplished remarkable deeds that are noteworthy and laudable. Kids and adults alike will be inspired by people highlighted here via the various poems penned by different kid lit creators. This is a must-have for home, class, and library.

This beautifully illustrated book celebrates fourteen young, neurodiverse activists through poetry, short bios, lovely illustrations, and pithy advice on how readers can stand up for themselves and what they believe in. Some of the subjects are famous (Billie Eilish) and others are not, but all have done inspiring work on issues ranging from the environment to gun violence to mental health and self-care. This book will mean the world to young readers who are neurodivergent but also to anyone who cares about how we treat each other, the planet, and ourselves. An extra bonus: readers will learn the names for different types of poems. Highly recommend.

Extraordinary. When I first began to read, I doubted the power of a list structure to convey the obstacles, heartbreak, successes, and joys of neurodivergent youth for themselves and the communities they create. The poems give you access to their hearts and the descriptions provide larger context and perspective. I was drawn into individual stories, recognizing some of the youth experiences from my own teaching, travels, and activism. The cumulative experience is powerful. I plan to give this book as a gift to neurodivergent youth and parents in my life, and to a friend beginning her journey as a mental health practitioner.

No Brain the Same is a joyful group of poems celebrating some extraordinary people. I appreciate the diversity in the chosen subjects and the array of their achievements and projects. Poetry is always an interesting way to share life experiences. While some readers might balk and look for more straightforward biographies, I think poetry is a great way to convey the emotion of a story. The illustrations are very nice. The bold color stands out well from the brown paper pages, and the pages themselves make the book feel warmer somehow. Poetry is not highly circulated in my library, but this is a lovely intentioned and well executed project.

Sharing how others see the world opens up our thinking to build empathy, understanding, and acceptance. Such an important book! Each spread contains 3 types of text with different purposes: poetry provides a window, a sidebar provides more information and background on the activist featured, and a small bit of practical advice is shared as the reader turns the page. These are powerful, courageous voices making the world a better place for all and bringing the message that we all have something valuable to offer those around us.

The use of poetry in multiple formats (free verse, couplets, etc) allows this to be accessible to many listeners and readers. From "everyday" people who do big things to Billie Ellish, we learn how the brain is strange, beautiful and capable of almost anything we put our minds to. Everything is positive when it comes to learning about each person, however, mentions of bullying and other issues these people have dealt with. In the end it is a celebration of being you.

Metcalf, Dawson, and Bradley have compiled another excellent book for this series. In a series of poems by various kidlit poets, readers learn of amazing accomplishments by neurodivergent people when they were young and who became activists. Not only was I inspired, but I also loved the various poem forms used. This book will be perfect in classrooms to encourage conversations about neurodivergent brains, activism, and poetry. Love it.

This anthology highlights biographical poems about neurodivergent activists written by neurodivergent poets. The activists represent many types of neurodiversity and could be excellent role models for students who need to see others like them making a difference. The poems are mostly free verse but also include a few other poetic forms and each includes a short bio of the activist. This book is a must purchase for school libraries and would make a good gift book for any neurodivergent reader.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

No Brain the Same is a book of poetry written by young poets about young neurodivergent activists who share a similar trait or aspect of their identity. Each poem is beautifully written and expressed and the illustrations to accompany each one and each activist are beautiful. Each poem takes a two page spread which includes a small section about the person the poem was written about/inspired by. I had only heard of a few of these young activists and I will certainly be reading up more about each of the fourteen featured.
The end of the book gives some short tips for how to believe, reach and lead your own strengths and abilities to activate for yourself, others and changes and includes a glossary of words used and depictions of the different poetry formats/styles used as well as a section with a little more information about each of the young and very talented poets featured in the book.
This was such an uplifting collection that will definitely inspire, uplift, encourage and relate to many children and adults with its diversity.

As someone who is neurodivergent and also has a son who is neurodivergent, I connected with these poems.

The poems included in this book are witty, emotional, uplighting and encouraging. The youth who provided insight and their poems to this collection are very talented and making noise regarding the uniqueness that is neurodivergent.

Great title, but I was a bit disappointed. I didn't care for the artwork. Also, I had trouble with the small print. For a book that embraces uniqueness, why didn't the publisher think about people with dyslexia? I don't think the content was bad, just the format of the book.

This collection is so powerful! I love the way the book is laid out: each 2-page spread includes a poem written by a well-known author about a neurodivergent activist. A paragraph about each activist is also included. I loved the different styles of poetry, the various authors' writing styles, and, of course, the content. This book introduces readers to 14 different neurodivergent activists, allowing many readers to see themselves reflected on these pages. Supplemental information includes information on how to take action, a glossary, information about the poetic forms, and information about each contributing author. Highly recommended for all homes, schools, and libraries!
