A tale of a divided Germany before the destruction of the Berlin Wall. Hannah's mother is killed as she attempts to cross the Wall from East Germany, and Hannah must learn to cope without her.
The Wall by Elizabeth Lutzeier is an interesting young adult novel based on the Berlin Wall. The story describes a young girl, Hanna, of age fourteen whose mother had been killed recently in an attempt to cross the wall. The girl is very much distressed after her mother's death and is sick of telling lies. Then another girl, Steffi, comes into her life who is more confident and feels free to speak the truth, whatever the cost. Being in the company of Steffi, Hannah learns to feel free to speak the truth & both of the girls participate in demonstrations, do speak for the victims of the cruelty by the government. In the end, by the power of people the dispute resolves and people are free to visit from East to West Germany.
Lovely story steadily developed around the lives of two teenage girls and their experiences with changing history. Picked this book up accidentally in one of the book shops in McLeodganj in India, which sells really old books at second hand. Read it over in just three days, and can recommend it to anyone who likes historical fiction like me. Thumbs up for very sensitive portrayal of teenage emotions and a political drama that has not been overplayed even once so to have made it boring.
1989, East Germany. Since her mother was killed trying to cross the Berlin Wall 6 months ago, Hannah doesn't know who to trust. Hannah and her father can't even grieve for her mother out of fear the government will declare Hannah's father unfit and take her away.
