This is the fifth book in the series! Ambrose is looking for a wife but he does it by making lists in his notebook. His wife must meet certain criteria. Susanna is his longtime friend and does not meet the criteria. In fact, she bothers him and teases him to no end. Susanna likes him and makes up her mind to behave and be like the woman he wants. But things don’t go as planned.
I really enjoyed this story! I loved Ambrose and Susanna’s relationship. Although I felt bad for Susanna at times. There were a lot of fun moments between them. And good tension. I loved the ending! Overall, a great story and I recommend!

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~The bet was simple. The plan was perfect. The result was bewildering…

“Sometimes the best things in life are not planned.”

-Oh my goodness, Friends, I am here to say, that the Gentlemen’s Gamble Series is a top read series this year for me! I simply adore each story within! A Bewildered Bachelor, by @hollijo.writes is dear book 5 in this series and it is such a delight! You see, to win a high-stakes wager, dear Ambrose Hartley must find a wife, preferably one who will help secure his ideal future. But hardened a bit by past disappointment, he chooses to avoid fickle emotions by focusing on a “seemingly” logical list of requirements. His plans include a serious courtship, a suitable partner, and a predictable life but, his plans begin to unravel with Susanna Fenton. She is a dynamite, unpredictable, unsuitable, and rarely serious. A contented spinster, who dearly believes love is the only proper reason to surrender her freedom. So, having known Ambrose “Rosie,” since
childhood, she doesn’t hesitate to mock his plan. What proceeds had me smiling, laughing, swooning, shaking my head, and wanting to read faster with these two souls fighting off more deeper realizations and feelings for perhaps a spark deeper for the other. But most of all, I loved the difference for the better these two are for another and together! I loved seeing Ambrose come to see what love is and what he is not willing to give up most of all! This is a delightful story filled with such heart! Worth the read, of course!🙌🏻📚❤️

“The course of true love never did run smooth.”

•Content: mild social drinking, past disappointment, death of loved ones-from side characters-mentioned on page, minor accident involving a broken carriage wheel, very mild potential peril type scenerio, no language, kisses only (some short; some more passionate).

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

"The course of true love never did run smooth."

A Bewildered Bachelor by Holli Jo Monroe

I love a good determined, feisty female main character, and Susanna is just that! If there ever were opposites attract, it would be Susanna and Ambrose.
They were made for each other, even if it took Ambrose FOREVER to realize it.

Ambrose has a list. A very good list. At least he thinks so. And a plan to find a lady to marry. But life never goes according to plan as he learns throughout this delightful clean Regency Romance.

I loved Susanna's plan to thwart Ambrose's plans and courtships of other ladies. They are a riot and I definitely smiled and giggled at many parts, especially knowing both of their perspectives.

Holli Jo has a beautifully unique voice in regency novels. I really enjoyed this second regency novel I've read of hers. If you haven't read her Snowbound Courtship, I definitely recommend it as well.
Be sure to pick up this next novel in the fun new series of The Gentlemen's Gamble.

This was a good read. I enjoyed reading this story and seeing the change in the protagonists' feelings.
I found it interesting that Susanna was the one who tried to make Ambrose fall in love with her. It was fun to see how she made an effort to fulfill all the qualities he wanted in a wife.
I liked Susanna. She is direct, honest, and a force of nature. She had to learn to value herself more, and she did.
I also liked Ambrose. He had a tender heart hidden beneath a strict mind, so it was great to see his carefully devised plans fall apart. It was just what he needed to see that love sometimes comes like a storm.
Another great story for this series.
I recommend it!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ ½

Ambrose Hartley is convinced that he can achieve anything he sets his mind to if he has a plan for it.
Now, desperate not to lose a bet with his friends, he creates a plan and a detailed list of requirements for his future wife, as he has to get married as soon as possible.
It should have been easy to achieve his goal, but he didn't count on the impetuous woman he has known since childhood entering his life and disrupting everything.
Susanna Fenton is considered a spinster, as at 28 she is an heiress with little interest in marriage.
When she reunites with an old friend, confusing feelings begin to arise in her, but even though her perception of Ambrose changed, he would never change his view of her.
With a list, courtship, and a house party, both of them might realize that love can hardly be planned.

You will find:
📝 Dual POV
📝 Childhood friends
📝 Sister's best friend
📝 Opposites attract
📝 Grumpy/Sunshine
📝 She falls first
📝 Forced proximity

~ When Ambrose Hartley made a plan, nothing could keep him from executing it. ~

This is the fifth book in The Gentlemen's Gamble series.

A Bewildered Bachelor, the penultimate story in The Gentlemen’s Gamble, is finally here! And it was a wonderful addition to this entertaining collection of books.

Ambrose is starting to feel the pressure of the bet, when one by one his friends are struck by Cupid’s arrow. Time is running out, but he has his list of requirements for a wife. So the task shouldn’t be too hard, right?

Susanna has always enjoyed making her best friend’s brother’s life a little more vexing. And when she discovers his list, she informs him he has it all wrong. That list will never suit or satisfy him. And she watches joyfully as one by one the potential ladies are struck from the list. Yet as each one is eliminated, Susanna’s feelings of friendship begin to change.

Ambrose would never consider Susanna for a wife. She is the most frustrating and meddling woman. But when his brother begins showing her favor, the green eyed monster of jealousy appears. Although he can’t for the sake of himself understand why. She is the antithesis of what he thinks he wants.

Friends this romance was so much fun! These two characters and their interactions will have you grinning from ear to ear. I can’t recommend this series enough!

I loved Ambrose and Susanna. Susanna had such happy and carefree personality… unless she was trying to prove to Ambrose why she was the perfect option for a wife. Ambrose and his silly lists! He drove me crazy with his stubbornness until he figured out all he needed was Susanna Fenton.

Favorite Parts:
-Susanna stealing Ambrose’s notebook
-Susanna realizing her own feelings
-Ambrose’s sister
-Susanna’s driving
-Ambrose’s various lists- from the ridiculous to the swoony
-Ambrose always noticing Susanna’s dimples
-their first kiss

Favorite Quotes
She smiled as if there was no one she preferred over him. Warmth poured through him like sinking into a hot bath.

Her entire body was suddenly bathed in sunshine, her heart near bursting. As he turned away, she wanted to call him back, to beg him to stay by her side forever. In that moment her doubts dissolved like a sugar cube in tea. She loved Ambrose Hartley. Every beat of her heart seemed to shout that she could not live without him.

What a great story! Much praise for author Monroe’s book. This is book 5 in the series ‘The Gentlemen’s Gamble’. I really enjoyed ‘The Bewildered Bachelor’ from the very beginning, and all the way to the end. It gave me P&P and Emma vibes at times and I loved it more so because of it 😊

The witty banter between “Rosie” (“Don’t call me that!” 😁) and Susie was delightful to read. Susie’s antics and her “wild” side were entertaining, to say the least.
I loved Susie for her independent spirit and how she tried to adhere to “the list”. It brought so much humor to the entire story. But about Rosie and his lists?! Maddening! 😆 (That dimple!) LOL

I truly loved the plot of seven gentlemen “racing” to the altar trying to avoid paying a wager.

I also, love the descriptions of the countryside. And the gardens and buildings at Brentmere Park were a delight to read about, I could pictured it all in my mind 🙂

And the title of this novel is the perfect one for it!

I loved and agree wholeheartedly with this quote…
“…a union built on love and mutual respect will always be something to admire and aspire to.”

With a HEA romance, you know the couple will eventually end up together, but it is the journey that can either take you by surprise or be predictable. Let me tell you, these two kept me guessing as to what they would do next. After Susanna finally realizes she has feelings for Ambrose, her behavior reminded me of Katharine Hepburn, annoying Cary Grant in Bringing Up Baby (one of my favorite shows), because she likes him.
I think this is the first Regency Romance I’ve read where there weren’t any characters in the aristocracy, but instead they were from the landed gentry. They are basically the same…just without titles!

This is part of a series of interconnected standalone novels written by different authors, where seven men have made a bet as to who will be the last to the altar.

This is the 5th book in multi author The Gentlemen’s Gamble series. It is a kisses only Regency Era romance. These books can be read in any order if you don’t care about being spoiled as to who actually loses the bet and is the last to marry.

After each book, I think that one may be my favorite. But I really mean it with this one. There was something about the obliviousness of Ambrose that was endearing. I just loved him.

I feel that Holli Jo always adds something extra to her books. She sneaks in little extra bits of history or commonplace actions for that time that others don’t. I love that about her books.

I was so excited to get an advanced digital copy of this book. I am happily and eagerly leaving a review.

I absolutely loved A Bewildered Bachelor, the fifth book in the Gentleman’s Gamble series! The author masterfully weaves this slow-burn, friends-to-enemies-to-lovers dynamic that stretches beautifully over the entire book. The tension is almost unbearable at times, especially because the male protagonist is so lost in his own logic—he doesn’t even see himself falling for her. It was truly heartbreaking to watch the female protagonist’s heart break. But oh, that ending! Holli Jo Monroe gave us such a satisfying conclusion, and now I can’t wait for the final book in just a couple of weeks. Five stars all the way!

Thanks to the author for the gifted ebook. It’s one of seven in a series, each by a different author, about a group of seven gentlemen who placed a wager on who would be the last to marry. Last one pays each friend £100.

Ambrose Hartley tries to choose a wife through logic but finds his plans upended by the unpredictable Susanna Fenton, a childhood friend who challenges his carefully constructed life and makes him realize he might be falling in love—something he never planned for.

It’s a sweet story, almost a mix of friends to lovers and enemies to lovers, with a satisfying romantic finale. The pacing sometimes took me out of the flow, but overall I liked it! I’ve read one other in this series (Anneka Walker’s A Novel Engagement) and it’s a very fun concept for a Regency romance series.

I just adored this story.

Ambrose and Susanna made me smile so much.

Susanna is so sweet and fun. She tried to mold herself into what Society wanted, but no longer. She’s tired of being something she’s not.

Meticulous Ambrose thinks he’ll find a bride by planning and making a list of requirements. He definitely needs to loosen up and Susanna is just the person. She frustrates him. Refusing to abide by Society’s rules, she treats him like she always has. Using his nickname in public. Carefree in her actions with him. I just loved how it flustered him. He begins to realize that love isn’t something that can be planned with logic and lists.

An absolute sweet read watching these two discover their love.

Thank you to Holli Jo Monroe for the copy. All opinions are my own.

Bewildered Batchelor & Determined Damsel

This was the first book I've read by Holli Jo (to my knowledge) and it was utterly charming.

It made me think of how very hard my wife had to lead me when we met, in fact- very realistic in that light.

A list which could never stand against true love- however unanticipated it's arrival.

I've enjoyed the whole series, but definitely recommend this installment.

Very fun read. Susanna was sweet and done with hiding her true nature. Ambrose was trying to find a perfect match using a list - we all know how well that works out! It was fun to read their interactions as they start to aknowledge their feelings. I also enjoyed the list of list of bachelors and their relationship statuses throughout the book. It definitely helped align this book's timeline with what I'd already read in previous books.

Absolutely delightful! I love that Susanna wants love and to be loved for who she is. Ambrose is stuffy and wants to stick to his rules and requirements, but I loved the softer Ambrose at the end! Such a great love story!

A good story with wonderful characters! After a wager is made between friends about who will be the last to be married, Ambrose Hartley is highly motivated to not be last. Ambrose is an over-planner and that can blind him to what he really needs. As he searches for a wife, desperation has him seeking the assistance of his brother and sister, resulting in a house party. Family friend, Susanna Fenton, attends the party with hopes that she will have a chance to win his heart.

This story seems like an enemies to lovers. In the first half, Ambrose is annoyed by boisterous Susanna. He makes insulting remarks about her. He is Very Slow to understand his own mind. However, Susanna’s determination to earn his favor results in some great scenes. The characters finally find their chemistry and the ending is cute. It is a clean, entertaining story. 4.25 stars.

I received a copy of this story. A positive review was not required. This is my honest opinion.
