i found this book a nice read for a vacation when you want something easy but also spicy and with some plot.

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ STORY
story follows summer, a romance store owner, whose store is located right next to wes’. basically they both in a rivalry or something and throughout the book they get to solve their conflicts and spend some time together on a family vacation. (since summer’s sister is getting married to wes’ brother)

«Summer had spent most of her life between the pages of a book—her heart was safer there. But she hadn’t given up on love. In fact, finding the kind of head-over-heels romance her parents.»

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ CHARACTERS
i enjoyed summer as a character. she was nice, soft and romantic while also had a strong opinions and personality. she was very defensive of herself which i actually appreciated.

«”When you’re tired of boys and ready for a man, just let me know.”»

wes sounded british to me and i don’t remember if he is. he called summer - love - almost every time and sometimes it was too much. i read love 3 times on one page and i wish he used that less for a bigger effect. overall, he is a basic romance book boyfriend who would do anything for his girl. the end was very sweet because of his actions and i loved his softness toward summer.

«Really hear what he was saying. “I am human, love. I might come across indestructible, but beneath the walls is a guy who is scared to death to see what the right person can uncover.”»

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ENEMIES TO LOVERS
i’m starting this argument again. this book is heavily marketed as enemies to lovers… but they were never enemies. from the very beginning wes liked summer and would call her love. he was kind of cold toward her in first chapters but he was never mean, rude or aggressive towards her.

«“You’ve had a lot of disappointment when it comes to men. I refuse to be another.”»

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ RATING + ENDING
why not 4 stars? it lacked chemistry and normal dialogues even though the tension was crazy good!!
of course the book had third act break up which was flat and badly developed. yes, it made sense but it was too short and quickly written. they broke up for 5 pages until they got together.

pre-read
i have a 10 hour flight, so i’m pretty sure i’ll finish this one before landing 👀

Oh, how I wish I trusted my gut and just DNF'd this book. How many times should we readers tell you that hate/rivalry to love does not equal hate to lust?? Please, I need tension, I need pining. I don't need "I love you, let's shaka laka boom boom." I just hated this book with every fiber of my being.

'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*' This was a super cute romance that I read quickly in a span of three days! I gravitate so much towards stories where the two MCs are complete opposites but over the course of the book, they’re alike in so many ways that they never would have guessed had they not learned to put their differences aside and give the other a chance. This was one of them, filled with humourous and sometimes flirtatious bantering between the MCs that had me laughing out loud and heart-to-hearts that enabled them to look past judging the other by its cover so fast 💬

'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*' There’s so many books now where the FMC’s main focus is to be independent and never rely on others, which is a great message to send as times modernize. But I think we also tend to forget that there’s nothing wrong with FMCs wanting a swoon-worthy happily ever after and it doesn’t make them “weaker” than the ones who are more headstrong and self-reliant. Summer Russo is the epitome of a hopeless romantic and she had a very lovable personality that it was impossible not to like her. She spent her life savings to take over the family’s romance bookshop and dreams of finding her soulmate by using her knowledge of meet-cutes, tropes, and her Cupid’s guide to love. I love that she’s unapologetically romantic and a big dreamer who wears her heart on her sleeve, and that it’s not necessarily a weakness to dream to love and be loved by the right person 💓

'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*' However, Summer is a chronic people pleaser and will constantly prioritize others’ wants and needs even if it means putting her own dreams to the side. Over the course of the book, she has so many internal struggles with wanting to keep her twin sister, Autumn, happy and not having anyone in her family stand up for her except for her dad. It would have been really nice to see Summer stand up for herself and to have some scenes where her family does actually support her and give their long-overdue apologies to her, especially Autumn who was so inconsiderate towards her sister’s feelings numerous times throughout the book. Summer’s inability to say no to others and to speak up for herself is a big factor in her character development that I would have liked to seen be resolved with more heartfelt conversations between her and her family to tie all her loose ends up.

'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*' The MMC, Weston Kingston, comes off as a stereotypical male lead in a romance: a successful millionaire who doesn’t do relationships but loves to shamelessly flirt. I liked learning that in reality, he closes off his heart to avoid becoming close to people who will only reject and leave him which led him to only rely on himself and build his business up from the ground up. I think it was interesting that it wasn’t painted that he had commitment issues in the sense. Instead, it was portrayed that Wes simply couldn’t do relationships because he had never had been in a romantic relationship that was worth opening himself up to be vulnerable after being heartbroken or loved unconditionally which he didn’t receive from his estranged father 🗃️

'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*' I think Wes’ background could have been expanded on just a little bit more as I felt like I got to know Summer very thoroughly in comparison to him. What was his childhood like with his grandmother and his mother? What parts of his adolescence shaped him for the better and which ones could he never forget no matter how much he tried to block it out? I think there’s a lot of potential for readers to connect with Wes on the same level as Summer. I was also super curious in seeing how Wes’ relationship with his younger brother, Randy, turned out and how they started to rebuild their bond that their father took away from them 💭

'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*' I loved reading about how Summer and Wes kept pushing each other’s buttons and drove the other crazy while secretly admiring them. I did feel like the attraction and turning point into their relationship was based on looks initially, but I did like that they got to know each other on a different level that neither of them would even think of opening up to others about. Summer sees the good and vulnerability of Wes running away from his problems and ignoring his heart’s desires, while Wes sees the side of her that even she has to struggle hiding from her sister and her family just to avoid disrupting the peace. Summer makes him feel safe and not afraid to open his heart, while Wes shows up for her and stands up for her when no one else does. I loved reading their relationship progress and almost wish the ending weren’t so abrupt so we could see them in love for a bit longer and how they interact with each other after what they’d overcome separately and together 💘

'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*' Overall, this was a great, fast-paced romance that I would read again. When you put a sunny MC and stormy MC together like Summer and Wes, you can never go wrong in learning that sometimes you have to take the risks that scare you to go after the love you want 💗

Trope: enemies to lovers, close proximity, romcom

Summer has taken over her family’s romance bookstore. The small shop is the pride of her family- but is in jeopardy due to a large chain bookshop soon to opening next door. Not only annoyed at the store next door, but Summer is also frustrated with the handsome brit in charge. Wes is under pressures of his own - he needs to make this bookstore a success or he and his half brother will lose their family company. Enjoying a prank war between the two but neither understanding the other’s circumstances - it’s truly a hate at first sight. Until Summer gets away to her families cabin for a week getaway - excited to finally see her twin sister and family. But who does her twin bring but Wes’ brother and the man himself as a plus one? Now stuck together and continually roped into things - enemies, turns to tentative allies, friends and then chemistry ignites something more.

Cute, spicy, romcom.

I have really enjoyed the authors books in the past, I love her style of humor and the way she writes and I thought the premise here was adorable. Summer and Wes owning dueling bookstores was so fun and their banter was top tier amazing for me. The forced proximity aspect was so good, it added a ton of tension and drama to their back and forth convos and I was loving it. Summer owns a romance bookstore so the author added some fun plays on different tropes that worked really well. If you like witty romances this was excellent!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC.

Summer Russo believes in destiny, true love and chocolate cake. She has her own bookstore and podcast, specializing in the romance genre. Wes Kingston is her business rival, the tall, dark and handsome CEO of his company.

The story is not slow-burn, but it is enemies to lovers and forced proximity, full of sparks between the two.

I loved that Wes supports Summer, that he listens to her, that he sees and understands what she feels, and that they communicate beautifully about everything. The story is well written, full of emotion. I didn't like her sister and family, who all expect Summer to give them everything and give her nothing in return, especially her spoiled sister.

I give this book 5 stars.

Spicy read

I love a British MMC (Wes) 😭 this was a super cutesy read. I'm not big on the enemies to lovers trope, but this was done nicely. I love how the FMC (Summer) wore her heart on her sleeve. The MMC had a likable personality from the start. He was confident and just knew from the moment he saw Summer she would uncover all of his layers.

The story focuses on a independent bookshop owner summer who is at war with a new upcoming big brand bookstore owner Wes who can potentially put her out of business. The story focuses on the FMC navigating how to keep her shop open even if it involves a little sabotage. It doesn't help that her store is a romance only shop so right off the bat you see the FMC is a hopeless romantic who can't seem to catch a break in that department of her life. That is until forced proximity with MMC uncovers those layers he tried to hide beneath the suit and ties.

Overall I enjoyed their love story and I enjoyed seeing them go from hating each other to loving each other 💕

Some quotables:

"If she weren't such a pain in his ass, he'd take the time to appreciate that ass."

"When you're tired of boys and ready for a man, just let me know."

Side note thank you #Netgalley for this arc.

This is my first book by this author and I was drawn by the enemies-to-lovers premise.
Now, I have to admit it was a pretty rough start, I almost gave up at 10%. It had everything I hate in romance - cliches upon cliches, caricature of characters rather than lifelike ones, terrible writing full catch-up, pop phrases. I was certain that this would not work for me. I was curious still to see if it's salvageable, so I persisted and I finished the book. I am not sure if it actually got better or I just got used to it, but I found the whole middle section rather more enjoyable.
I was still not sold of the family vacation of grown ups being all silly games and traditions but I did like the slow burn, and the main characters gradually opening up to each other. They had their own demons and traumas to deal with but found the support and understanding they needed in each other and I loved that.
The very late third-act break up was so unnecessary and contrived that it made me angry all over. I was just thinking it was not so bad and boom, we were back to silliness and total lack of logic.
The ending was not bad, it was rather fitting the characters, so overall the story ended on a positive note for me.

That all said, this was not too bad but not great either. With the right expectations - some silliness, some melodarama and lots of cliches, it might be good reading experience for other readers.

Thoughts/Would I Recommend This?
This book was a really cute, easy book to read that I enjoyed reading. It’s definitely one of those books that are just super easy to read and a good fluff piece for in between other heavier books if you need a break. I loved how we saw Summer go through the growth she did, realizing she can’t always be the peacemaker and give up what she may want for others want just to keep the peace. The only thing I didn’t really love was the 3rd act breakup because it was like 5 pgs long, and then they were back to normal. So, I wish the author had made it longer to actually make it seem more needed or just not included it because I don’t know if it really needs it. All in all though, a great book, I’d definitely recommend as a good light read!

DNF’d at 30 percent.

The idea of battling bookstores feels odd in the time we’re living in when we’re rooting for every bookstore to succeed. Big box bookstores are also the heroes, along with indies.

Besides, the banter just wasn’t there. I didn’t like or care for either character.

This book took me awhile to finish because the characters kept making me so mad that I had to put it down and walk away.

The story is about Summer, a small romance book store owner who dreams of her own perfect meet-cute. She is trying to turn her struggling family shop into a success when a new mega bookstore chain location pops up next door. She butts heads with the new CEO Wes until getting to know him more and they find ways to support one another.

This story spent a lot of time on Summer’s twin sister Autumn and her love interest Randy who also happens to be Wes’ brother & all to the family relations seemed odd to me. I also couldn’t really get over the twins named Summer & Autumn just feeling too cheesy.

I found Summer’s character hard to like in this book as she seemed to be constantly upset about something that should not have been a whole big thing, but then not upset when her sister was seriously the most selfish and annoying character out there. As someone who is super close to their sister, their relationship made me cringe. I liked the premise, but did not fall in love with the characters the way I wanted to.

Books have always been my “happy place.” The genre that I can never get enough of is romance. Although my preferred genre is romantic suspense books, at my core I am still a fan of traditional romance. Although there are certain “tropes” that I enjoy more than others, one of my absolute favorites is “enemies to lovers.” Because of this, I was extremely excited to get a chance read this book.

I tend to be hesitant to read books from a new author, because it can sometimes take me a while to get used to their writing style. That was not the case with this book. This book hooked me from the very beginning. I also liked that I could see both of the main characters’ perspectives, and I wanted both of them to “win.”

Here lately, I really enjoy when the secondary characters made you care about them also. Not to be a spoiler, but the “main” secondary characters were not likable (at least not to me!)

Overall, I really did love this book, and I am glad that the characters got their HEA. I recommend this book, and I will definitely read more.

This was such an entertaining read! I tend to inhale any book that has enemies-to-lovers, and this was no exception.

Every single scene between Summer and Wes had me kicking my feet. They were so cute. Between the banter, their chemistry, and their feud/silly pranks, there really wasn’t a dull moment!

This is a modern take on You've Got Mail, and in an era of copy-paste retellings, this was quite refreshing. It's unique in its own right and is entirely unputdownable. :)

There were a few formatting issues (Extra spaces in the text. A few jumps in dialogue.) All very minor mistakes that will most likely be fixed before it is released.

I'm willing to bet that this will be a hit for all you Swifties out there! I know how fun it is when your fav artists are mentioned. I'm not a huge fan myself, but I liked how it played a part in this story.

Love to Hate You had an interesting premise of an indie romance bookstore owner going up against corporate millionaire and somehow finding ground to fall in love. I was so here for all of that.

I think if you’re looking for that quintessential hallmark movie feeling that has a certain level of absurdity, that takes on the 90’s + 00’s romance cliches, with a fair bit of spice and tension, you’ll really love this. It’s a silly, fun time and would make a great audiobook for in the car or even a fun movie.

Unfortunately for me, I found it a tad juvenile and really lacked the heart and depth I enjoy from characters. I would’ve loved to see more about corporate v small town business and just a little less absurdity to keep in more grounded.

I really liked the beginning of this book! The story pulled me in quickly, and I loved all the book references and the cozy bookshop setting. Summer was fun and easy to root for. I even liked her - until I didn’t. She slowly turned into one of those “not-like-other-girls” characters and started whining a lot. That’s when she lost me.

Also, this is not really an enemies-to-lovers story. It felt more like insta-love and lust, which isn't my favorite. The ending got really cheesy too.

I was still going to be kind in my rating, because I didn't DNF it, after all. But then I remembered—Summer has a dog. A dog we don’t hear anything about in the last 10 chapters! As a dog owner, that really annoyed me. Poor pup!

The writing itself was fine, but the story just wasn’t for me in the end.

Quotes:

"... between the pages of a book - her heart was safer there."

"- Sometimes winning can be really lonely."

"- Then there's the one bed.
- There's two beds, you're just stubborn."

I totally love the movie ‘You’ve Got Mail’ and have seen it numerous times so I was really looking forward to a book inspired by this movie.
‘Love to hate you’ is about Summer, who owns her granny’s bookshop and is suddenly confronted with an big-box bookshop across the street and it’s obnoxious CEO Wes. They bicker, they fight, and Summer is worried her bookstore is going under. So she’s happy to get away from it all and spend some time with her family. You can imagine her surprise when her twin sister Autumn shows up with a boyfriend and his brother: Wes! So what happens next?

I liked the plot, but I had some issues with a few things.
Being a twin myself, I feel Summer and Autumn being fraternal twins would have made more sense, instead of mirror twins. Wes and Summer hated each other so it’s unrealistic to expect that Wes accepted his brother’s invitation to join him and Autumn on a family holiday after meeting Autumn, who is so much alike his competition, Summer.

Summer’s character was variable. She often let people walk all over her, like the dog owner in chapter one (I would have demanded him to pay for my ruined dress!) and most of the times her sister, but she was verbally very aggressive towards Wes. I felt uncomfortable with her harsh words.
Wes, in turn, wasn’t nice towards her either. For example he rescues her when she falls into the river but ends up tossing her back in. And I felt he was a bit overly sensitive. He had mommy issues, okay, but he was hurt that Summer wanted him gone from their family holiday - of course she did, he’s the competition and they’re not friends! I understand his feelings but I’d expect a grown man to feel that way with friends or relatives, not complete strangers.
The speed in which Wes and Summer get physical was off putting to me. One moment there’s hate, the next there’s flirting and moaning. I would have liked more relationship building and less cheesy attempts at flirting, which often felt totally off the mark. And her relatives basically pushing her towards Wes and making all kinds of suggestions like using a condom or her father urging Wes to sleep in Summer’s room was very weird, to say the least. Autumn, I just wanted to strangle her, she’s so incredibly selfish and both she and Randy were immature.

I did love the Italian roots this family has, the bickering about who makes the best pasta sauce. I loved the old movie references, like Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief. I love love love these old movies.
I also liked that Wes needed to rescue his big bookstore, too, albeit from the stockholders and the mismanagement of his stupid brother.

To summarize, this book has good parts and parts that didn’t really work for me, but it is a nice and light read with a happily ever after. I am sure many people will enjoy it, for me it was sometimes difficult to remain engaged in the story.
Content 411: In addition to a moderate amount of secular and religious swearing, there are also a few descriptive sexually intimate scenes.
Thank you Netgalley, Dragonblade Publishing and the author for providing an advanced copy of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed it; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Love To Hate You by Marina Adair is a 2025 take on the classic romance movie, You've Got Mail. Summer Russo is the owner of a local romance bookshop and Wes Kingston is one of the heirs to a large book conglomerate opening a rival store next to Summer’s. Summer and Wes naturally clash over their businesses but are unexpectedly thrust together on an annual summer vacation when they realize their siblings are dating.

Love To Hate You covers a lot of romance tropes, including: enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, secret will stipulations, and meddling family members. I’m a lover of tropes, but at times, the excessive use of cliches makes the characters seem one-dimensional. There is clearly sexual chemistry between Summer and Wes, but I feel like there was a lot of telling rather than showing their developing relationship. One of my biggest gripes with You’ve Got Mail is the lack of true grovel by Tom Hanks’ character, Joe Fox, after he forces the closure of Kathleen Kelly’s indie children’s bookstore. Thankfully, Love To Hate You changes the plot and the outcome of the Summer’s romance bookstore is much more satisfying. Love To Hate You is not a deep, romantic novel but is a great contender for a light summer poolside read if you’re a fan of classic romcom plots.

Tension you could cut with a knife, laugh out loud humor, and especially lovable characters.

I LOVE Summer Russo, our fun-loving FMC who has a heart of gold and an easygoing manner—well, that is, as long as Wes Kingston isn’t around. Wes presses her buttons like no other person has come close to doing. Summer's known for being a gentle person, but when Wes is around, her claws surely come out. These two were the perfect enemies to lovers! The banter was BANTERING. Oh, and he calls her “love” even though they’re enemies; HOW CUTE IS THAT!? He’s also British!!! Enough said. The author really delivered with this book!

I eat up books when the FMC is book-obsessed AND owns a bookstore like you’re living my dream. I seriously lived vicariously through Summer. Not only did she own a bookstore, but she had a hot British guy to banter with… SWOON!!!

Sure, sometimes things could be a bit corny, but it’s a romcom, and that’s just how they are! Aside from a few little blips, I found a lot of comfort and fun while reading this. Checked all of my boxes!

I received an eARC of this book via NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of this review.

This was a cute cupcake read. Easy, quick, and left a smile on my face. Love to Hate You by Marina Adair is about an independent bookstore owner falling for the owner of the box chain bookstore moving in across the street. Summer Russo bought her aunt’s bookstore a few years prior and has kept it going with grit, determination, and a lot of love. The store is niche, featuring romance books and hosting monthly bookclubs. She’s even added a coffee bar. But none of that matters with Wes Kingston and his retail giant of a bookstore moving in across the street. With weeks til opening, Summer has to come up with someway to save her store and the legacy that was passed on to her.

Summer is a fun character and reminds me a bit of myself. She’s hardworking, independent, and sometimes anxiety gets in the way of her plans. She understands what it means to fail, having watched her family go through it when her dad’s small business went bankrupt due to a large chain store moving in. Now, she’s facing the same thing and fighting to stay afloat. The one thing she looks forward to every year is summer on the beach with her family, which includes her twin sister. But this year, Autumn brings her boyfriend who brings his brother who happens to be Summer’s nemesis.

I loved Wes. He is a lot like Summer in that he is hardworking and determined to make his business succeed. For him, it is all about his brother. Their father left the business to them, putting Wes in charge as CEO on an interim basis. The catch is he has to grow the business within a year or control of the company goes to the board, leaving Wes and his brother out. Determined to see the business succeed, he isn’t really all that worried about the consequences to Summer. Now though, spending vacation on the beach with Summer and her family, he begins to question what he thought was the right thing to do.

This book moves at a fast pace. I loved the dual POV, flipping back and forth between Wes and Summer. I’m not sure I’d have fallen for Wes otherwise. Most of the book is set at the beach house on vacation. Summer and Wes are forced together over and over again as they watch their siblings fall in love. It’s laugh-out-loud funny at moments with some sweet and spicy mixed in.

Overall, I really enjoyed Love to Hate You. It would make a perfect weekend or vacation read. If you are a fan of the author, romantic comedy, or are just looking for a quick read, I highly recommend it.

I love this book! It feels like watching a Hallmark movie, and as a hopeless romantic, it felt like it was made just for me.

The story of Wes and Summer is so sweet. Their opposite personalities lead to playful banter, which, without them realizing it, turns into undeniable attraction.

Their chemistry is perfect—Weston Kingston is clearly the king of flirting. Omg, I would blush every single time he spoke. (AND LET’S NOT FORGET HIS BRITISH ACCENT 🫠🫠🫠)

I have a soft spot for Summer Russo. As a fellow hopeless romantic, I truly felt every struggle she faced. And that’s why I was so happy to see Wes finally treat her the way she deserved.

And i love Russo’s family! Especially Frank Russo! ❤️

I read this book in one sitting because it’s such an easy, sweet read. The plot twist was shocking but necessary. I’d definitely recommend this book when you need something light and heartwarming in between your “heavier” romance reads.

This book was cute, the enemies to lovers tension snapped really early and turned to cute moments pretty quickly, but I was here for that as well. I felt for both of them because they both had a lot of baggage with family issues, but I thought it was cute how they kept showing up for one another and they had an ally in the other. Wes was a businessman and only thought of himself, and by the end he was a new man. Summer brought out something in him that he had hidden deep down and it was adorable the way he fell so hard.
