Gyo Fujikawa was an American illustrator and children's book author. A prolific creator of more than 50 books for children, her work is regularly in reprint and has been translated into 17 languages and published in 22 countries. Her most popular books, Babies and Baby Animals, have sold over 1.7 million copies in the U.S. Fujikawa is recognized for being the earliest mainstream illustrator of picture books to include children of many races in her work, before it was politically correct to do so.
I read this book over and over again as a child. It is the single most treasured item from my youth. The illustrations are mesmerizing and the tales take you far away in your imagination!
It is very sad that not very many people know about this wonderful book! (so I'm happy to talk it up!) And it is a real shame that is no longer in print!!!
Twee, saccharine. The black & white illustrations aren't as effective. The oversize format is just awkward for a book that's meant to be shared with a tot. Too bad.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! Great for students who are just tapping into poems or trying to find their muse for poems with fantasy texts. I would definitely recommend this book to grades 2-5 because of the text content and form of writing. I would also use it for all grades when the teacher is looking for some form of text that students can pick out rhyming words.
I have been racking my brain for a YEAR trying to come up with the title of this book. Finally found it after some creative google image searching. I loved this book so much when I was little, and I'm excited to discover that the author has more!
This book is good for k-3rd grades. It's an example of several different types of writing focusing on fairy tales and poetry. This is a keep for the class library.
Awesome book of stories and poems for children and adults too! Found in a book stacked bookstore in the French Quarter. The book and the store are gems.
This book introduced me to magic and imagination more than any other. It lived in our coffee table until I was probably a teenager and I still think of it regularly.
Overall, this was a cute enough book for a very young child. But the art was very hit or miss; not all of it matched the cover. At times it uses an inked uncolored art style that looks kind of wonky and caricature-esque that has a disfigured look to it. The pages that match the cover look nice, though. There were one or two cute, short poems, but most of the stories or poems were bland and a bit corny. Though I will give it props because I read that this author was among the first to illustrate children of different races playing together in children's books, and that's really awesome.
I love the idea of the secret world of elves, fairies, gnomes and trolls, but this book did not capture it at all. I far prefer Fairy Poems For The Very Young and Creatures. The stories in here are poorly chosen, I think, from too childish to unmagical.
I read this book as a child. It's probably been about 15 years since I've even seen it and all of a sudden, as I feel I want a reference for ethereal artwork, this is my chosen starting point. The stories have the magic of old folklore and the illustrations are all done with true artfulness. This is something for every children's library.
I liked this one as a child. The beautiful illustrations of faries and trolls. It was still beautiful and i still like the small stories and verses about the elves, gnomes, fairies and trolls.
