After the unexpected death of my mother, I’m trying to hold things together and run the diner she left me. It’s a stressful time, and when Lee Hartmann suggests meeting me back at my place after a party, I’m looking forward to it.
Lee is a rugged, reclusive, sometimes infuriating man. He’s also ridiculously attractive. We spent a satisfying night together a year ago, but we both have reasons for not pursuing anything more.
The night doesn’t go as planned. When Lee arrives, he finds my house engulfed in flames and rescues me moments before the roof collapses. I’m alive, but I’ve lost everything, and there are people waiting to take advantage of my misfortune.
You can’t say no to the Matheson family. In this small town, they’re the law. My mother and grandmother refused their attempts to buy our diner. Now I’m the third generation to resist them, and they’ve had enough. When their threats fail, they resort to other means. First, the health department shows up on my busiest night of the year. Then someone vandalizes the diner, smashing windows and flooding the place.
Lee insists I stay with him at his secluded lakeside house until things cool off. Only, things never cool off around Lee. He’s brooding, secretive, and oddly protective for someone who swears he doesn’t do relationships. When I catch him sneaking out to a boarded-up cabin in the middle of the night, I worry I’ve gone from one dangerous situation to another.
Because Lee is hiding something. And falling for the man who swears he’ll never love again might be the biggest risk I’ve ever taken.
The Caretaker is a standalone dark romantic suspense.
S.M. Shade writes spicy romantic comedies and steamy contemporary romances with relatable characters. Whether it's a good laugh or a good cry, she likes to grab you by your emotions and make you feel. An unashamed Croc enthusiast and poetry nerd, she can usually be found listening to Indie Rock on repeat and watching birds.
The reclusive Lee has a soft spot for Silver, a past one-night-stand. When a house fire, along with a series of unfortunate events plague her, he insists she stay with him.
Over the course of the next several months, Lee’s past begins to resurface and not only does it put Silver in danger, it forces him to confront his evolving feelings for her.
Despite the underlying suspense, the pacing felt slow to me. Unfortunately, I also didn’t feel the connection between Lee and Silver, with their relationship or between the sheets.

Where silence starts to rot
‘The Caretaker’ doesn’t rush you. It watches you first.
From the moment the story begins, the small town feels… off. Not loud, not chaotic, but eerily controlled. The kind of place where people smile just a little too easily, where conversations end too soon, and where the quiet carries more weight than noise ever could.
S.M. Shade builds this atmosphere with precision. Nothing is forced. Instead, the tension seeps in slowly, settling into the background until it becomes impossible to ignore. It’s not just what is happening, but what is being held back that creates the unease.
The characters are where this story truly breathes. Morally gray, layered, and deeply human in their flaws, they are not meant to be trusted. And that uncertainty lingers in every interaction. Motivations shift, truths feel fragile, and the line between right and wrong dissolves more with every chapter.
The pacing is deliberately slow, but never stagnant. It unfolds like a careful unraveling, revealing just enough to keep you leaning forward, never enough to feel safe. Each piece of the mystery adds pressure rather than relief, tightening the grip of the story instead of loosening it.
The romance is subtle, almost cautious, woven into the tension rather than standing apart from it. It doesn’t soften the darkness, it deepens it, adding emotional stakes without ever taking away from the underlying unease.
This is not a story that shocks loudly. It lingers quietly. And then, almost without noticing… it changes the way the silence feels.

After The Bee Keeper I was really hoping that Lee or Silver would have a book of their own. I was THRILLED that they got a book together ❤️ ☺️
This couple is both so tragically broken, Lee after the loss of his wife, thinking he can never love again, and Silver with the death of her mother. 💔
It was hinted in the Bee Keeper about how DARK Lee's past was, but we didn't get the full effect until his one time hook up Silver's house catches fire - with her in it and he starts going full protector mode.
As they try to walk the line of infatuation and friendship both of their demons come out to play and it just might tear both of them apart.
This book was heavy on the suspense, with moments of heat and romance. It kept me tied to the book to see what was going to happen next, so much I binged it in one setting, then read it again just to make sure I actually read what I thought I did. There were points I thought I knew who the big bad was, but I definitely wasn't expecting the ending. Very well written!
I was given an advanced reader copy for my review.
Well, then... This was my first book by S.M. Shade, and it will definitely not be the last. *cough* 5 stars *cough*
I am ususally a dark romance girly but I like a little romantic suspense and this one totally hit for me. Side note, I also like the grumpy sunshine trope and this one kinda hits there as well!
Silver is the kind of female character I like. Strong, badass even. I love her independence and sass. She's not a big fan of men, but she does appreciate the occassional night of fun with no commitment.
Lee is a grumpy widower, drowning in guilt over the death of his wife. Usually content with the solitude of his cabin and the occasional company of his sister, his best friend, Lee also has appreciation for Silver's particular version of friends with benefits.
When strange things start happening to Silver and Lee starts receiving strange texts they are thrown together into an intriguing storyline with some wonderfully written twists and turns. No spoilage here, but I will tell you totally worth the read.
I will be checking out the Beekeeper which apparently is the other couple we see throughout this book. And most probably all the other books by SM Shade. The Caretaker was a great first read of this author for me. Consider me a fan.
Since Silver and Lee's one night last year, they've not repeated it. Then he comes to her rescue when her house is set on fire, and now the feelings that they haven't acted on since, are becoming even stronger. But the same reasons that kept them from repeating their night still exist, in fact, are more present than ever. If they can get past those obstacles, that one night could become a lot more.
Silver and Lee's story is intense, twisty, and grey, but with moments of light in the banter and the found family relationships. After having read The Beekeeper, I was eagerly wanting both these characters' stories, that they got theirs together is even better. They both have a lot of demons, though, a lot of pain inside, and I hurt for them, especially Lee. It makes their happy ever after that much sweeter.
ARC provided by Wordsmith Publicity for an honest review.
When I read The Beekeeper , I legit wanted to smack myself because I never read SM Shade before and it was so good, and I had hoped and prayed that Lee and Silver would get their stories told so when I found out that the next book was theirs and theirs together I squealed because I knew after their attention in The Beekeeper that the story was gonna be good.
Lee doesn’t have many people in his life apart from Arlo and his sister, but there’s something about Silver that has some intrigued but other than the occasional hook up Leah is done with relationships after he lost his wife. But then you start getting text messages from a blocked number referring his wife. The hairs on the back of his arm starts to stand up and he’ll do anything for answers as well as keep so safe ESP since he showed up to our house and it was on fire while she was sleeping.
Silver is a strong, sassy, funny woman, but she’s been going through a lot lately while she’s grieving the loss of her mother and the diner becoming hers and she’s putting on an expansion to it. If that wasn’t hard enough, there’s a very powerful family, wanting her diner and they’ve been coming after it ever since her grandmother owned it. Her grandmother and mother were able to keep them away, but they won’t leave silver alone and they’re just escalating.
When Silver wakes up to Lee taking her out of her burning house she knows that things just got really bad. Had to make matters worse. Lee is demanding that she stay at his house.
Silver has no desire for any relationship other than the occasional hook up, but it’s kinda hard when Leah is so good to her and sober definitely melts pieces of Lee’s heart. The longer they’re around each other the harder it is to keep their rules in place and not blurred the lines of their friendship.
Once I started this book, I legit cannot put it down! The way SM Shade wrote the story. It was a slow burn read. Sometimes I was wanting to hurry up, but she wrote the story the way she did for a reason and I really really loved it.
I’m looking forward to see what SM Shade releases next.
This book is was full of suspense and mystery and I really enjoyed the ride.
Two broken people who find solace in each other, Lee and Silver are friends of friends in a small Kentucky town. She just wants to keep her family’s diner open and successful in the wake of her mother’s passing and he just wants to be left alone, still grieving the death of his wife 7 years ago.
I liked these characters when they appeared in The Beekeeper and knew there had to be a story there. Lee may be big and gruff but deep down he has the softest heart. Silver is a firecracker with a smart mouth, and not afraid to stand up for herself and punch a dude when he deserves it. I also appreciate that the characters are all over the age of 30.
There’s a little bit of tension between them, even in a friends with benefits/forced proximity situation. Their chemistry was so good and I love their banter. Both are dealing with guilt and grief and sorrow (and secrets they keep from each other) and it broke my heart for both of them at times.
The ball busting with the ISH guys was so amusing (and I was hoping to see them in future books, but realized these guys already have their own series “In Safe Hands”!). I was so happy to see Arlow and Calli from The Beekeeper too. And if you haven’t read that book, I highly recommend it. It’s one of my top reads of 2024 and definitely not talked about enough.
The book touches on serious topics like mental health struggles, depression and suicide. But has a lot of lighter moments that made me smile.
It got really exciting and twisty as the plot unfolds! Pick this one up if you like a darker romance with a murder mystery to solve.
Thank you to @authorsmshade and @wordsmithpublicity for the opportunity to read this ARC!
From the very first pages there was instant chemistry, instant intrigue, and instant spark. I was instantly hooked!!!!
Silver and Lee are both antagonist and caring. It was a great dynamic for their forced proximity and developing...um, relationship. Neither of them wanted one, that is. Silver was jaded and Lee was traumatized so together they avoided committing like the plague, but it also made them perfect for when they wanted to scratch an itch and boy did they know how to scratch each other's itches. 😏 They just understood one another and understood that that itch didn't mean more beyond the pleasure they found in each other for a few hours, until one night when Silver's life was on the line and suddenly Lee didn't know how to handle seeing her hurt, but he also didn't know how to handle seeing her in his space. It's a fantastic forced proximity especially because Silver doesn't hold back on her independence and just being herself.
With the intense stuff going on between Silver and Lee, there is another huge blanket of mystery surrounding Silver the night her life literally went up in smoke, along with a mystery that surrounds the darkest days of Lee's life. The entire book seems dark, but it's fast paced and Silver and Lee have wicked banter between the two of them. It kept the book flowing in-between the mystery and suspense that surrounded the entire plot which had fantastic twists. I never saw the turns coming, nor did I see the dynamic plot bombs until they were dropped. 🤯 This was literally my face every time one jumped out at me. Seriously, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor as I dove farther into the web of mystery. The characters pulled me into their fascinating world where I devoured the entire book in one nail biting day. I loved it!!
Silver just inherited her family diner after her mother died. She's trying to keep everything balanced but Austin Mathison keeps pestering her to buy the diner and he's not giving up easily. His family are all prominent people in town; the sheriff, the judge and the mayor. When her house catches on fire, the health inspector shows up on her busiest night of the year and then her business is ransacked, she gets help in the form of Lee Hartman. A quiet, rugged recluse, who she spent a steamy night with a year ago.
Lee insists Silver stay with him at his secluded lakeside house to protect her. As things heat up, they both know the score- this is just for fun and no catching feelings as they both don't want a relationship.
Lee has secrets of his own though and when those secrets threaten Silver Lee feels this urge to protect her. As they grow closer to each other, the threats to them both increase and Lee must find out who is behind this once and for all and decide if love is worth fighting for.
A very well done romantic suspense! I like Silver for how tough she was and how she didn't need Lee to fight her battles. She was fierce and strong and came up with a plan on her own and crushed it. Lee was very overprotective but you understand why when you learn of his past.
The mystery element had a good twist that I didn't see coming and I loved how things ended with the Mathison family. A little misdirection really threw me off on this one!
This was definitely in the morally grey realm so if you are unsure about darker themes, tread carefully but I thought it was done well and as always SM Shade delivered! Huge thanks to S.M. Shade for sharing this book’s digital advanced review copy with me in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve read one other book from this author and I remember enjoying that book, so I was excited to read more from her! I read the synopsis of this book and it sounded like my kind of read, so I requested an ARC and made it my next read! After reading, I can say that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I was expecting to, but I enjoyed the overall direction it went in! I thought that the plot stayed on one level for too long and I did find myself starting to skim! There was a lot of romance in the plot and it was a romance where the characters already knew each other before the events of this book and then it turned into a romantic relationship! The romance allowed for some steamy scenes and sexual tension! There was also some action and suspense, which did add to the plot and made me enjoy it more! I do wish there had maybe been some more action and suspense! The characters were also great and added a lot to the plot! Silver was the main female character, and in the book she was dealing with a lot! Her house had burned down, her cafe had been targeted and her mother had recently passed away! I did feel for Silver, but she kept going and she powered through a really tough time! She also found herself in danger through no fault of her own, but again she was strong! Lee was the main male character and love interest of Silver! Lee was a guy who kept himself to himself and didn’t like to be around those he didn’t care about! He had also experienced a big loss that has a big impact on him! I liked Lee and he worked hard! It was also easy to see how he felt about Silver and he didn't want her to be in any danger! This book was written from both Silver and Lee’s point of views! I was hoping that it was going to be before I started reading and the synopsis gives the impression that it’s going to be! I loved that it was because it helped me connect more with both characters and see how they really felt about each other! It allowed for more things to happen in the plot as well, which helped as Silver and Lee didn’t spend every second of the plot together and they were both going through their own situations! I can also completely understand why this book is a standalone! Everything in the plot was wrapped up and all the questions raised were answered! I now can’t wait to check out more books from this author! This is my second book from her, so I can’t wait to find another book that sounds like my kind of read! I also love the cover for this book! It has a similar vibe to the cover for The Beekeeper which I love because this is a prequel book to that one! It would draw me to the book as well! Big thank you to S.M. Shade and Wordsmith Publicity for an ARC of The Caretaker!
What a wild ride The Caretaker is. It’s been a while since S M Shade released a book, but let me tell you The Caretaker was worth the wait. If you’ve read the Beekeeper that was released is 2024 then you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find some of the characters will show up in this story. I devoured this wonderful story and I just couldn’t put it down.
Silver has not had it easy by any means, after suffering the loss of her mum she inherits her mums diner. In between having to deal with family that is determined to make her life and her livelihood difficult she is struck by bad luck when she loses her home to a fire.
Lee has not had it easy either he is a broken man who is still grieving the loss of his wife and blames himself for her death. Lee has sworn off relationships, even though he has insane chemistry with silver. Lee is fiercely protective of silver but he’s also very secretive. Unfortunately both silver and Lee realise there is another threat is lurking around the corner watching them from the shadows. Silver and Lee need to figure out who is behind the recent events in their lives and why before time runs out.
Lee and Silvers story was absolutely incredible. I was on the edge of my seat the entire journey. If you like suspenseful dark romances then this is a definite must read. I can’t recommend this story enough!
The head line is one of my favorites in the book, iykyk
Puzzle pieces and bread crumbs are my favorite and this story has loadssss!
First of all, I’m absolutely devoured this book! It has this intensity that makes you want to curl up in a safe spot before you read it but peppered with humor and spice that keeps it from getting too thrilling for me to read (I can’t do scary movies so I don’t do a lot of horror reads either)
The author did an amazing job laying out all the breadcrumbs about Lee’s past and I loved the connection between the characters and the little moments that feel like breadcrumbs where they are falling for each other - it’s like that “thou does protest too much” kinda vibe where they both are like oh no I’m not doing this but they do it 😂 the way she lets him know she’s there if he wants to talk to her when he’s being moody but gives him space, they are like an old married couple in some aspects and I love those moments! But then the moments where they dig their heels in, I love that push and pull.
I also enjoyed how I kept making guesses and collecting breadcrumbs and puzzle pieces and even when I thought I had all of the pieces and had them put together it turns out I was only part right 😂 if you’re a super fan of this author you’re going to love some crossover bits as well!
If you love angst, mystery, puzzles that are masterfully written, push and pull relationships, a FMC who can save herself and knows it, hilarious banter and lines, but darker themes - this is definitely the book for you!
Silver inherits the family diner when her mother passes away. She carries it on, making it a great success, which raises the ire of the Matheson Family. They start harassing her and making life difficult for her, trying to get Silver to sell it to them. Lee, who runs a cabin business, had a one-night stand with Silver a year ago, and although they weren't together, they kept up their friendship with witty banter amongst themselves. After a party, Silver invites Lee back to her place. She gets a ride home with another friend and texts Lee to come to her place when he's ready, and tells him where her spare key is so he can let himself in. Lee arrives and, to his horror, finds Silver's house on fire. He goes in and saves her. She needs to seek medical help with smoke inhalation. She finds herself back at Lee's place after she is discharged, since she needs someone to care for her for 48 hours afterward. Lee feels for Silver, but he still has his wife on his mind, who went missing and was murdered. Their relationship is strained when Lee's past comes back to haunt him, and she has to deal with the Matheson family trying to ruin her and her business. I received an arc for my voluntary honest review for NN Book Blog. If you love a second-chance romance with angst and drama, mystery, intrigue, and all the feels, then you will love this book. S.M keeps you turning the pages with all the twists and turns that you don't see coming.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
This is the story of Silver and Lee. This is a small town story that is a bout a small town that is creepy as all get out for reasons you will discover while your reading. Since the town is being controlled by one family I feel like the description of the town was spot one and you feel the way you need to about it. Silver runs her family diner and is trying her best to make it a success while the family that runs the town has been trying to take if from her grandmother and then her mother. She is following in their footsteps and refusing too. However, that family is not one to be messed with and they are not having not having that family diner. I loved how Silver has a mouth on her that will get her in trouble but she is not willing to let anyone run all over her. This is a small town Kentucky too and everyone knows everyone. She knows Lee because of their friends and they have shared one night together and never repeated it. When her house is going up in flames, he saves her and insists that she comes and live with him in a secluded cabin since she is not safe anywhere in the town. And that is all I can say. This book is full of tensions and twists and turns. It will keep you one your toes and on the edge of your seat.
I’ve been waiting for the book that follows The Beekeeper … and I was not disappointed! This book had me furiously turning the pages from the very beginning … I could not put it down! I love a book that has me guessing till the end. At times it had my jaw hitting the floor. I loved how Silver didn’t take anything from anyone. Even though her life was falling apart, she tried to look for the positive. Then there’s Lee … who wouldn’t love a hunk with a heart of gold. Both Silver and Lee were keeping big secrets … even from each other. And don’t get me started on the steamy scenes. This has been a wonderful series and I can’t wait for the next book.
Silver inherits the diner that’s been in her family for three generations. The Matheson family owns almost everything in the county … they want her diner and will do anything to get it. Lee saves her when her house starts on fire and insists she stays with him until her insurance is sorted out. Lee’s wife died seven years ago and now he just wants to lead a quiet life … with no serious relationship. But when Silver moves in with him, all kinds of things start to happen that will make each of them rethink their life plans.
I received an ARC courtesy of the author and Wordsmith Publicity.
The Caretaker by S.M. Shade is a dark romance that blends emotional intensity with a slower, more suspense-driven pace.
The story begins with a one-night stand between Lee and Silver, but quickly develops into something more layered. One of the most compelling aspects of the book is Lee’s character, particularly the contrast between his overall demeanor and the softer side he shows when it comes to Silver.
The pacing stands out as a defining element of the story. It unfolds in a way that builds tension gradually, creating a suspenseful atmosphere that feels almost cinematic. While this slower pacing may not appeal to every reader, it adds depth to the plot and allows the environment and character dynamics to fully develop.
For readers familiar with the author’s previous work, this book offers a different tone and style, highlighting her versatility across stories.
Overall, The Caretaker is an immersive and emotionally driven dark romance that delivers both tension and character depth.
Thank you to Wordsmith Publicity and S.M. Shade for allowing me to read this book.
Well that’s a story I won’t be forgetting anytime soon!
It’s great when an author has the ability to write just about anything, SM Shade is one of those authors. Whether it’s a laugh out loud romcom or an emotionally dark and challenging suspense Shannon has a way of capturing her audience from beginning to end.
The Caretaker is definitely not a romcom, no this one is emotional, dark and will keep you guessing until the very end. Lee and Silver’s connection is quick but not easy, and makes you question just where your limits would be if you were in Silver’s place.
This is the second book in this series and I could not put it down. You do not necessarily need to read The Beekeeper before this one, but I’m all about connections, and it’s going to make this book experience so much better if you do. I’ve read all of Shannon’s books, and I will continue to do so, because they are just that good.
Book Review: The Caretaker by S.M. Shade ✨ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 stars)
Silver is that girl — strong, independent, and not here for anyone’s nonsense after leaving a cheating ex. She’s not looking for love… and honestly? I loved that for her.
Then we have Lee… grieving the loss of his wife but giving major Zade Meadows vibes (minus the stalking 👀). Dark, intense, and protective in a way that just pulls you in.
This book had me in a chokehold from start to finish. The suspense?? The tension?? The thrill?? I could NOT put it down. And that twist?! So well executed — I didn’t see it coming but it made perfect sense.
S.M. Shade really did her thing with this one. At this point, I’m convinced I’ll read anything she writes 🤭
If you love: 💔 Strong FMCs 🖤 Dark, protective MMCs 🔪 Suspenseful, can’t-look-away plots
So good! What a wild ride! I have read other novels by this author and really enjoyed them. I was excited to jump into this novel and it did not disappoint. I have been waiting for this new novel and it didn't let me down. From the first chapter this novel reached across the pages and grabbed ahold of my attention and did not let me go. I was on the edge of my seat at times reading. I couldn't put this novel down. My heart hurt for both Silver and Lee and all they had been thru in their lives and the losses they had faced. Their chemistry was so good! I loved getting to check in with characters from previous novels. Once I started reading this novel wouldn't allow me to put it down. I loved watching both characters lower their defenses and walls and accept each other into their lives and fall in love. This novel took me on such a wild ride! It was so good! I can hardly wait to see what this author has coming next. Loved it!
This is Lee and Silvers story, one of past trauma, guilt, hope, love and friendships and I really enjoyed it!!
Lee is all tall, hot and broody and lives out in the middle of nowhere in a collection of cabins. Most of them he rents out. His past is a dangerous one that affected others and he's never forgive himself for it. But man, he's such a good soul - he can be vicious but he's still good!!
Silver is flying solo after a cheating ex and loosing her mum and fighting to keep her diner alive when things go from bad to worse...
Lee steps in to save the day and yet things keep going downhill - for them both when S.M. Shade decides to throw in several twists and turns!!!!
And I was sooooooooo chuffed that we get to catch up with Arlow and Callie from The Beekeeper as well as some of the guys from the In Safe Hands series (an absolute must read series!!)
I loved The Care Taker. It was dark, suspenseful, and I couldn’t put it down! This author never misses for me! She is truly one of the most versatile authors, and I’m not sure if I prefer her light and hilarious or dark and depraved books better! This story was so addictive!
Lee and Silver have had great chemistry but neither was interested in pursuing a relationship. TBH, they both have a really dark past and secrets. However, some unfortunate events have Silver staying at Lee’s place. It’s hard for them to fight their connection in such close proximity. Additionally, they are both in danger.
The suspense and plot twists were so good in this book! It had me on the edge of my seat! Also, Lee was such a broody recluse. I loved watching Silver completely crumble all of the walls that he built up around himself. He was so gone for her and was so protective.
I am so excited to see what this author decides to write next!
I am completely hooked! This was my first book by S.M. Shade, and I will definitely be exploring the rest of their works.
When I applied for the ARC, I was drawn in by the tropes, which piqued my curiosity. Upon receiving the book, I chose not to read the blurb and dove in blind. What a surprise it was! I was captivated and needed to uncover whether the incidents were accidents or attempts at murder.
Silver is a strong character who doesn’t rely on anyone else; she can stand on her own and make things happen independently. Men, in her view, are only necessary for one particular purpose… if you catch my drift.
Lee, on the other hand, lost his wife eight years ago and has placed the blame solely on himself. He promised he would never fall in love again and has found contentment in his solitude within his cabin.
Having absolutely loved The Beekeeper, a book which has stayed with me, I was delighted to read this new book filled with familiar characters, especially Calli and Arlow, with the central pairing of Lee and Silver. And what an engrossing book it us! Silver is such a strong, independent woman, who is facing an uphill struggle to build both her life and her business, as she battles local corruption and deals with her grief at the loss of her mother. Lee, too, has his troubles, bearing a deep sense of guilt following the loss of his wife, a dreadful mix of heartache and responsibility. He loves his solitaire and has no intenof risking love again. There follows an intense, well plotted story with mystery, heat, friendship, laughter, danger, and love as these two fightbagainst odds created by others to gain their much deserved HEA and peace. Fabulous 💖💖💖💖💖
The Caretaker is a dark romance. It is filled with suspense and is very hard to put down.
Lee and Silver met through friends in a small town. She is getting over her mother passing away and wants to keep her family diner in business. Lee is grieving his wife who passed away several years ago. Silver is further traumatized after she loses her home in a fire.
Lee doesn't want to be in another relationship even though he has chemistry with Silver. He i s both protective and had secrets. There are people who are watching them and they need to uncover the mystery. Who would want to hurt them?
I loved the chemistry between Lee and Silver. They are both broken people who needed each other. I loved the mystery element to their story. I look forward to the next story from this talented author.
Silver is grieving the loss of her mom, who has trying to hold everything together, and the diner her mom left her. Lee is a broody, secretive, and a recluse, and when they arrange to meet up at Silvers, he finds the house on fire and manages to save Silver just before the roof collapses. Silver is left with nothing, and Lee offers her a place to stay. But there are people in town who want to take advantage of Silver’s situation. This is a well written action-packed story, with family, friendships, emotions, tension, suspense, danger, intrigue, secrets, loss, grief, humour, witty banter, opposites attract, morally gray, healing, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, and unpredictable, small-town romance. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
The Caretaker was heavy, as the title suggested. And though it was heavy, there were many moments where I smiled and laughed and there was also a lot of love. There were also some characters from the past that we hadn’t seen for some time, so that was a walk down memory lane!
Lee broke my heart. His entire story, from beginning to end broke me. I am so glad he got the chance to tell his story and I’m so glad he met Silver. I love that he had Arlow and $100.
Silver is just courage. She is strong and everything that Lee needs but doesn’t realize he needs.
This story is incredible. As I said, it is dark, but it’s so well written. It’s got all the mystery and such a twist at the end that you will leave you shook!
Not gonna lie, this story had me riveted from the first page. S.M. Shade has some good stories out there, and I have read quite a few, but this one gave me a book hangover like no other. Silver and Lee have met and shared one night of passion that leaves you breathless, but a year later, her life is about to change. When her house is on fire, it's Lee who is there to protect her and make sure she is safe. But she is far from safe. A threat that has been coming after her family for years just won't stop, but Silver isn't gonna take it lying down. Lee has his own secrets, and when they start to unravel, he will do whatever he can to protect Silver. This story is a bit dark, naughty, lustful, and so damn good.
Okay - so if you're a fan of this author like I am, you have been patiently (NOT, hahaha) waiting for the follow up to The Beekeeper, when we first met Calli and Arlow. I absolutely LOVED this one!! Soo Good! I read it in one sitting, so plan your time. :)
I happily lost myself in the pages and followed Silver as she navigated her life, after the passing of her mom. She definitely has a lot on her plate, and doesn't need the drama and small town politics threatening her livelihood. Unfortunately, she has a run of horrible luck, which sends her into Lee's home temporarily.
Lee has also had his share of difficult times in the past few years, and continues to emotionally punish himself for the loss of his wife, Isla. His need to remain aloof and alone just adds to his grumpy demeanor. Fortunately for him, Silver finds that very appealing, and their sizzling chemistry is hard to fight. Unfortunately, a perfect storm is brewing - and threats from their pasts are closing in, ready to end them unless they figure out who's calling the shots. There's lots to keep you flipping pages - drama, betrayals, lies, bloodshed, coercion, corruption, blackmail, arson, kidnapping, retribution, deceit, emotional turmoil, second chances, steamy chemistry, friendship and supportive connections, AND MORE!
I literally kicked my feet with delight when characters from past series crossed over into this storyline!! I will say, if you haven't already read the In Safe Hands series ... you are missing out!! Those guys are fantastic, and I absolutely LOVED how they worked together to uncover whos and whys of this mystery.
This is a very entertaining and addictive storyline, and a roller coaster ride of highs and lows. Lots of emotions and pulse pounding moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. Please read The Beekeeper before this (and the ISH series, beginning with Landon) for the very best experience with these characters and the storyline. Absolutely worth your time, IMO.
I was fortunate to receive an ARC (thank you Wordsmith PR) and am happy to leave my thoughts.
I enjoyed this book but maybe not as much as The Beekeeper. I feel like I needed more twists because I figured out the twist right away and that made me sad. I love SM Shades writing and I always love reading a new book of hers and I totally got where they were both coming from but at the same time there was just bad after bad after bad happening to both of them. Again I love her books don’t get me wrong I think I was just missing something and I couldn’t begin to tell you what. I love how the In Safe Hands guys were brought into this book though that was an awesome crossover. Does this mean more ISH in the future? I’d recommend this book but make sure to read the Beekeeper first.
