After nearly dying in a fire her ex started, Bea did the sensible thing, she ran like hell…
Now she’s laying low in Willow Lake, running a business with her best friends and keeping her distance from alphas and betas alike.
At least, that was the plan until one drunken night and an unexpected heat change everything.
Just when Bea thinks her life can’t get more complicated, she suddenly becomes guardian to a niece who’s equal parts eyeliner, attitude, and chaos. Between dodging her ex, surviving teenage drama, and pretending she’s not scent-matched to the pack she can’t stop thinking about, Bea is a hot mess.
When her ex shows his face, her pack closes in around them, keeping both her and her niece safe. They offer to move in and make sure her dangerous ex can’t reach them. An offer Bea doesn’t want to refuse.
Can an anxious Omega, a surly teen, and one determined pack turn this hot mess into a happily ever after?
Jarica is an American author. She prefers writing paranormal and fantasy books. When she isn't writing she is playing her xbox with her husband and fellow nerd. She has two crazy boys who make writing a challenge, but one she gladly accepts.
My biggest problem with this book is that it doesn't mesh with the earlier books in the series. The timeline presented in the prologue and chapter one is slightly vague but the one hard number is 2 years. Taryn's story starts almost 2 years before Bea's and they are very close friends from page one of Taryn's story. Close enough for Bea to be her confidant and encourage Taryn to go no contact with her family. But somehow Taryn didn't have any idea of Bea's relatively recent past? It doesn't make sense. This isn't Dr Who; time can't be a wibbly wobbly ball in a linear story.
Second, I am not impressed with the synopsis presentation of Phoenix and the book reality. While I actually prefer the book version, the synopsis leads to an expectation of her being a more dramatic presence. We see none of that. This inconsistency leads to the relationship building gaps. Phoenix is used to justify a large jump in the timeline but we never see a substantial rationale for her presence barring Bea from interacting with the guys. We never see real relationship building at all because yet another grown adult making irresponsible choices is then utilized as a diving board into togetherness. (It bugs the ever loving life out of me that every single FMC in this series is too stupid to have decent birth control on deck).
We don't see much personality from the guys. They're likeable enough in the end, but very shallowly written. Apollo especially is like a caricature golden retriever gym bro in the early chapters, and does little more than repeat himself and others in the most "I've dropped too many weights on my own head" way. Ezra has the most potential to be truly good but he seems half mute, I don't know anything distinct about him. Corvin just strikes me as a controlling jerk who reigns himself in solely to get the prize (female of his choice). Together they are just opportunistic horn dogs. I don't hate them but they don't deserve to be on anyone's book boyfriend list.
While this is a fictional story, the gaps in basic logic are too hard to ignore. A business smack in the middle of a busy business district, in the middle of the work day, was able to be targeted from the front TWICE? They call relatives but not the emergency services first during an obvious emergency, despite having multiple phones available to do both calls? They paper the town with pictures of the suspect and still no one notices him? I don't know what kind of small town this is but the residents are all clueless and useless apparently.
The final resolution is like a fart in the wind. We're supposed to believe in the legal system that was so pervasively broken the first go round? No coconspirator? No enabler? Just " this time nothing can save him!"? Ha. Good luck with that blind faith. I give it 3 months before they find out he's been slapped on the wrist again.
Dee’s ex drugged her and tried to burn her alive. She survived and moved to the quiet peaceful town of Willow Lake. There she opened and operates a bookstore with her best friends (you read about them and their HEA in prior books). Dee’s having a night out when she meets a pack, they’re terrific but she tells them she just wants a no strings hookup. It doesn’t go as planned…she goes into heat and they all realize she’s their scent matched omega. Dee is obviously freaked out but she allows them to help her through her heat. After her heat her wayward manipulative twin sister drops by with her daughter, Dee’s 14 yr old niece, Phoenix. Her sister says she has a job interview and takes off, effective dumping her daughter on Dee. Dee takes it all in stride and her friends rally around her. They move her into a large house on the lake and Dee begins to acclimate to her life as a “mother.” Phoenix is settling in and things seem to be going well when Dee gets a shocking surprise…she’s pregnant!!! Dee tells her friends and Phoenix and then calls the pack over to tell them her news. She apologizes for ghosting them, explains what happened, and tells them that she’s pregnant from the heat they shared with her! They’re elated! They immediately immerse themselves into her life and Phoenixes life!!
Everything seems to be going well until Cameron, Dee’s psycho ex appears in town. He got a slap on the wrist for nearly killing her, since he’s a smooth talking alpha. Dee and her guys form a protective circle and try to stay safe but Cameron takes every chance to try and kill her again…he nearly burns her alive two more times. Each time he manages to escape. When Dee is heavily pregnant her guys get a call about a forest fire (they’re fireman) and have to leave. Cameron takes that chance to try and kill her again. She escapes, again, the guys chase Cameron down and he’s finally apprehended. Dee’s life is safe now. When she’s nine months pregnant her twin shows up unexpectedly, again, she says she won’t try and take Phoenix, she may stay in town to get to know her daughter, sister and niece again. But when Dee goes to the hospital to give birth her sister takes off. Dee gives birth to a little girl. Her pack and niece who now calls her mom have their HEA.
**THOUGHTS/SPOILERS**
This series is usually pretty straight forward and “easy” reading. This book was no exception. It was an easy read, and despite Dee’s backstory, pretty drama free. I only gave this book 3 stars because it just felt too short, or perhaps there was too much “back story drama” to unpack in this fast paced book. Dee has SOOOO much going on. And her prior issues are A LOT. The book was set at lightning speed, so everything that happened…Cameron’s repeated attempts on her life, getting her niece and everything just occurred so quickly! I felt as if this book would’ve been better as a duology honestly.
Yeah, this one was just really bad and I couldn’t force myself to continue on First off, it has an extremely unlikable FMC. She’s one of those women that had something happened to her, and because now that she has been a victim herself, she can go on living life and going through life being a Cunt to everybody else because she feels entitled because she has been through some shit. And of course, everybody in her life treats her like most amazing person in the world and a goddess, literally one of her guys calls her goddess, even though she treats him worse than shit. It’s so beyond cringe. I just can’t stand women like that in real life and I definitely don’t wanna read them in books. Victim entitlement is just horrible. Anyways, she sluts it up at a bar one night and meets her pack/scent matches, but she obviously wants nothing to do with them because her ex was horrible. Even though these men are super sweet and just wanna be nice to her. So she fucks them, even though she knows they are her pack and she wants nothing to do with them, even if it’s breaking their hearts. Sidenote, something else that I didn’t like, was that her pack consisted of one alpha and two betas. Which just doesn’t make sense logically but also not in my opinion pack wise. That was just another thing that I didn’t like. Anyways, they continue to give her space because she’s a goddess, eye roll, and she just continues, living her life, being entitled, then all of a sudden the author drops a traumatize niece into the mix. It’s just so out of nowhere and again gives the FMC another reason to not interact with her pack. Other than the one night stand at the beginning of the book 50% into the book later she still has no other interaction with her pack at all. Then the book jumps a month ahead and she has completely ghosted them even though they try and text her she’s just a complete and utter selfish Cunt and treats them like shit Then something happens that I don’t wanna spoil I guess, but she changes her mind overnight and text messages them, even though she ghosted them for like six weeks, and of course, cause they have absolutely no backbone or self-respect they jump up and down with glee and shout, yes goddess we are coming to you even though you treated us like shit. That was when I had to stop because it was just unbearable to continue reading this shit. I do not recommend this book.
I will start this off by saying I am a huge fan of this series overall and was really looking forward to this next installment in the Willow Lake Omegaverse. I typically really enjoy Jarica James' writing so I was surprised when this fell flat for me.
Fan the Flames had a lot of potential, but it just didn’t fully land for me. I went in expecting the same intensity and character depth as the earlier books, and instead the MMCs felt like watered-down versions of themselves, they truly felt like background characters and I found the existing town characters to hold more impact in their scenes than our love interests. Their voices blended together at times, and I struggled to connect with them in the way I had before, which was disappointing when I am so clearly still in love with Holt and Ash from previous books in this series.
I also found myself getting increasingly distracted by inconsistencies with prior storylines - whilst I appreciate friends who don't push for your trauma, it felt unrealistic with what we know about Taryn that her best friend would never comment on her injuries. Certain character motivations, timelines, and even smaller details didn’t quite line up with what had already been established, and it pulled me out of the story more than once. It’s the kind of thing that might not bother everyone, but if you’re invested in the series, it may pull you up.
That said, it wasn’t a total miss for me. This was still enjoyable, the premise is still strong, and there are moments where the tension and dynamics shine through. Some scenes hint at the depth and chemistry I expect from this Omegaverse, and those glimpses are what kept me turning the pages.
Regarding specific plot points, this wrapped up a bit too neatly for me and I just refuse to accept that Cameron is suddenly magically held accountable. A few extra pages would have helped flesh this out.
Overall, this felt like a middle-of-the-road installment: readable, with flashes of what makes the series work, but ultimately lacking the character strength and continuity that made the earlier books so engaging.
As a burns survivor, I did find the discussions around PTSD in this manner well crafted and relatable but I wish it was fleshed out a bit more.
I will continue to read any book Jarica puts out, but unfortunately won't be reaching for this one again for a while.
Fan the Flames by Jenee Robinson and Jarica James is a captivating addition to the omegaverse small-town romance series, blending emotional depth with intense chemistry and found-family warmth. Bea is an absolutely standout heroine. Her strength is evident from the very beginning, even as she carries the weight of a painful past. Having survived both physical and emotional abuse from her ex, she’s built walls that make trusting others incredibly difficult. That vulnerability, paired with her resilience, makes her deeply compelling and easy to root for. Fans of the series will love seeing the continued presence of her best friends—her fierce, loyal ride-or-dies—who support and defend her with unwavering devotion. When Bea meets her mates, it’s at the last moment she expects or wants it. True to form, she tries to run, but fate has other plans—and I absolutely loved how destiny played its hand here. The pacing of their relationship feels earned as her mates slowly become exactly what she needs: patient, protective, and understanding. The introduction of her niece, brought into Bea’s life through an unexpected visit from her sister, adds a beautiful layer to the story. It not only softens Bea in new ways but also raises the emotional stakes. That sense of responsibility and love enhances her growth and the dynamic within the pack. Of course, the past doesn’t stay buried forever. When her ex reappears, the tension ramps up. This is where the story truly shines—her mates step up in all the right ways, offering her support without taking away her independence. Watching Bea reclaim her strength and find safety and love on her own terms is incredibly satisfying. Overall, Fan the Flames is an emotional, empowering romance with a strong heroine, devoted mates, and just the right balance of angst, healing, and heart
Fan The Flames is book three of the Willow Lake Omegaverse Series. It is a why choose, omegaverse, small town romance with found family and a protective granny mafia.
Bea is in hiding from an abusive ex that left her with physical and mental scars. While trying to find someone to "scratch an itch" she ends up finding her scent matched pack, Corvin, Apollo, and Ezra, and then going into heat. After her heat, Bea needs some time to process it all, but her estranged twin sister has other plans when she turns up and abandons her daughter with Bea.
This was such a terrific book. I loved Bea. She is feisty and knows what she wants. I love how she was willing to seek help coping with her past and was open to moving on. I really loved how patient the guys are with Bea, even without knowing about her past. I loved how Bea and the guys are with her niece, Phoenix, as well. They all treat her as their own and give her the family that she never had, and that really touched my heart. I adored all the emotion provoking moments in the story, as well as the found family aspect.
This an amazingly written book with awesome pace, plot, flow, characters, storyline, storytelling, character development, relationship development, and world building.
If you love a great omegaverse with a FMC in danger and protective and loving MMC's, then I'd definitely recommend this book.
Thank you so very much to Jarica James & Janee Robinson for the ARC; all thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
Being back in Willow Lake is like getting a warm hug. Bea is surrounded by friends and besties who support her and look out for her, which is important after the trauma she’s endured from her abusive ex. At the urging of the granny mafia, she ends up looking for a little fun and finds so much more when she goes into heat surrounded by a pack, who turn out to be her scent matches. Bea, for all her strength and the work she’s doing to move on from the past, needs time and space to process, but walks into a whole new heap of family drama. Thank goodness her scent matches are a trio of firefighters who are steady when things heat up. Corvin, Apollo, and Ezra always seem to know when to back off and when to step up, and they reinforce that family are the people by your side, not those related by blood. The found family vibes are strong in this one, and the OM drama only comes in the form of a stalking ex that eventually gets what he deserves.
It is so good to be back in Willow Lake again. I have enjoyed this town and all of its residents. I also know that I truly want to meet the Granny Mafia. I hope I never tick them off or I could get hit by a purse. IYKYK.
This story is Bea's story and oh boy does she have some ex boyfriend trauma. She is also dealing with a lot. I mean a lot. Everything just comes barreling at her at once. But this girl is nothing but resilient.
Her one night stand group are her scent matches. And that just throws everything out of whack. Her life is now different.
I am not gonna spoil this because this book deserves a read. I hope there's more from this town because I love it!!
The cursed of the purple books this month strikes again.
The book was on the lower end of fine. It would probably just make a 3 stars but I disliked the fmc and I hate time jumping in the first place and loathed it because it made the fmc more annoying and in the wrong in this book.
Dear MMCs, if the FMC I hereby give you permission to find someone who will love you for you and not because you pined like good little boys in limbo. All she had to do was say the over used line "it's not you it's me. I need time to figure myself out first." And then I would not have been annoyed with her.
*le sigh* I adore these small town omegaverse stories! Bea is such a strong wonderful character. Her growth through this book is just phenomenal. From a scared, scarred female omega that dodges relationships because of her past straight into a fearless fighter that stands up for herself and her adopted daughter and willingly opens up to relationships of all kinds. 💜
If you love small town omegaverse romance you will love Beas story. She ran away from an abusive ex and when she wants a good time she discovers her scent matches. I love how strong she is and the growth she shows. I love how supportive her men are even when her niece is pretty much dropped on her door step. This found family just sucked me in from start to finish. Loved it.
Love this series by Jarica & Jenée. Great story lines, characters, and beautiful endings. If you’re looking for a good one-day read this book series is the one for you.
FMC & the three main MMCs were great &, although there wasn’t a big character development like in longer books, there’s was perfect for this story. 10/10 recommend.
I have loved all of Jarica James' books that I have read but this one was exactly what I needed. I really loved the plot and the pack was so sweet and patient! I adored Bea and Pheonixs relationship and how accepting they were about everything that happened. I highly recommend this book especially if you are looking for a different example of found family!
Absolutely love this story. The characters are so well written that they pull you into their world from the first few pages and then the spicy love story keeps you hooked until the end.
Once again I got swept away into this incredible small town that just gives me all the found family moments i love. I loved that Bea was getting her HEA she deserves. Her pack are just so sweet and yummy , they're just perfect for her. I loved seeing all the other characters and im keeping everything crossed there's more to come in this series. Amazing five star read that I would highly recommend if you love Omgeaverse with plenty of found family moments.
