The Kindness of Strangers; Coast to Coast to Coast in 60 Days follows one man's battle with Parkinson's, and the unbelievable journey he took on his bike to fight it. From the rocky outcrops of the Maritimes to the frozen tundra of the Arctic, author Lloyd Taylor recounts his adventure as part of the Spinning Wheels Relay to End Parkinson's on their cross-Canada journey to inspire hope and raise awareness nationwide. Amid the wild cast of characters he finds tucked away in some of the most remote spots in the country, from Inuit grandmothers living on the edge of the North Pole to musician fishermen offering helping hands across Newfoundland, Lloyd and his shaky hand track a trail of friendship and discovery in one often-funny, always unpredictable summer. Through it all, Lloyd and his fellow riders battle with the very disease they're hoping to cure, a debilitating illness that attacks their bodies as they ride through storms and through untamed wilderness. Reverent, heartfelt, and poignant, Lloyd's ride is an unforgettable story of community and connection in a time when we need it most.
I I had been putting off reading this for a while, waiting for the “right time.”
When I found out Lloyd would be narrating the audiobook, I waited even longer, knowing that hearing him tell the story in his own voice would make it even more meaningful.
I’ve known Lloyd since I was about eight years old, when my sister and I became friends with his kids. Listening to him recount his journey, and especially the journey through the North alongside my dad made me incredibly proud to know him and to have witnessed a small part of that story firsthand.
Keep telling the stories, Lloyd. I’ll always be listening.
Listening to Lloyd narrate his story was incredible. I recommend to anyone who knows him and anyone who doesn’t. What a moving recollection about a journey and disease that has affected people I love. My favourite read of the year hands down
I rated this book a 5 because it’s an incredible story of determination, courage, and community. Lloyd Taylor and the Spinning Wheels Tour crossed Canada and north to the Arctic Ocean. As they persevered through difficult conditions and terrain they brought awareness to Canadians about the difficulty of living with Parkinsons and the options available to living a better life. Inspiring and great storytelling
This is an absolutely delightful book. Heartwarming and positive. Cyclists with Parkinson's took their bicycles 1000 km coast to coast across Canada. So enjoyable to read about the people they met and how they organized everything. Highly recommend it.
It's hard to properly express the value this book delivers. It leaves me thankful to be healthy, thankful to be Canadian, generally optimistic, and yearning to ride my bike, forever more with Lloyd and the Rigid Riders in my thoughts.
Feel good true story of personal struggle and perseverance showing the power of focusing on a goal. All captured in a light hearted and witty manner. Quite incredible.
